The next blazer or blazette does one topping. The next blazer or blazette does the next topping. The next blazer or blazette does the cheese. Finally, the last blazer (it's always a blazer--never a blazette) puts your 'za into the fast-fire oven. Sprinkled throughout this process is rah-rah between the 'zers and 'zettes and small talk they try to make with you and your fellow zeks about your day: "Things are great down at the gulag. I'm on lunch after the weekly inquisition and attempts by the painfully unfunny to be funny. After this 'za, I'm heading back for more micromanagement of my breaking of big rocks into little rocks. For less than 10 bucks, you can put anything you want on a personal sized pizza. What's not to like? The toppings taste fresh, they've never burnt the dough, and I love all the options. I know it must be part of the job but I love how they ask "What else?" Instead of asking "anything more?" You don't feel guilty for taking advantage of the service they provide. This style of restaurant is obviously becoming increasingly popular, and I, for one, am not complaining. Just like the name says, the pizzas are "Fast-Fire'd", so you don't end up waiting too long. On top of all that, the customer service here is phenomenal. When I brought it back to my desk I kept thinking this is my last slice and I'll save the rest for later.. Well I thought that all the way up until the pizza was gone. The crust is super crispy which is something I love in a thin crust. Last but def not least they have my favorite summer time snack as a dessert- s'mores! I've had Blaze bookmarked for a bit, and when I had to go to Union Station today, a neuron "fast-fire'd" in my mind to get a quick fix of pizza. I didn't get there until about 6 pm. I can't ding them for long lines; on the contrary, I was first in line. They were very friendly in greeting me, and when they asked me & I told them that it was my first time here, they did a quick run-through of the menu and pointed to the wide array of toppings in front of me. Yes, like Chipotle, as people have mentioned, but on steroids, with multiple sauces, a half-dozen cheeses, and a stable and garden of meats and vegees. Too many choices for me; so I went for one of their "signatures," the BBQ Chicken, which had, mozzarella, red onion, banana peppers, gorgonzola, bbq sauce drizzle. It's nice that it's one price for all the toppings you want--avoids feeling like I'm being nickeled & dimed. (Other pizzerias, I'm looking at you--$1 for half a clove of garlic?!?) I added some ham and artichokes, and swapped the banana peppers for jalapeños. Bananas? We don't need no stinkin' bananas! I've got to say, that I love the concept. The thought that they can cook a pizza in 3 minutes is pretty amazing. THAT, my friends, is American ingenuity. (At least it I hope it is--I could see the Japanese perfecting this too, though having had pizza in Japan, I don't trust their "taste" in toppings...) I'm thinking of turning the concept into a vending machine, because I'm sure that a lot of people would love this at work, and it's a pretty simple process. Nothing appears to be cooked except after the pizza is assembled. Just drop the ingredients on the so-so dough & Blaze it. Fun for the whole family to watch at the rest stop on the highway & take the kids' attention off their backseat bickering! So--how did I like the pizza? It depends on what the meaning of "like" is, as Clinton might have said. I wouldn't have otherwise had pizza today. So I couldn't trust that the crust would taste & chew like top-notch bread, but it wasn't at all bad either. The variety of toppings is good, and I liked the ones I had. Just on taste, I'd give it 2.5 stars, round to three. I liked it between "meh" and "A-OK." But for the ability to have pizza at a time of day when not many places sell slices? And get it fresh in 3 minutes? I like that! That's at least 5 stars, my friend. So, a definitely solid 4 stars of likability in the end. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here--I only do that when the food is the star. But if you're no more than several blocks away and you want a cool experience and decent-enough 'za, I recommend it. I'm sure I'll be back. (In comparison with Chipotle, Chipotle's ingredients and flavor are relatively superior. If you care about volume, they're similar: if I'm starving, I can finish a whole burrito at Chipotle; I was starving tonight & was plenty full after finishing the whole pizza. And for $8 for a 12" diameter pizza--let's see, "pie" * r squared... That's 113 square inches of pizza... Seven cents per square inch doesn't seem half bad. Build Your Own... Pizza! From sandwiches to burritos and coffee, BYO (Build Your Own) is always a quick and easy way to get exactly what you want with your food in a reasonably short period of time. Enters Blaze Pizza, who decided to take a swing at the Build Your Own approach with pizza and wow did they hit a home run! As more and more locations start to popup (this location is close to home and now there's one by the office I work out of - LOL) the food and prep will really become fairly standard and I'll update the review based on pure service at this location. You're greeted by nearly all the staff as you walk-in and approach the food counter that shows all of the ingredients you can pick for your awesome creation. The staff helping you will ask for your name to get things going and then you're off on a pizza-creating experience. Customers can choose from a simple pie (traditional cheese pizza - goes well with the spicy red sauce), a one topping pizza (traditional cheese pizza, with you guessed it, any of the one toppings available - there's a lot to pick from BTW), one of the prescribed pies that are also very tasty (and you can use this as a base and add any ingredients to it) and last but not least the Build Your Own. Once you've created your pie its in the oven for approx. 2 mins while you're picking out sides, drinks and squaring away things with the cashier. When your pie is out of the oven and your name is called - consider adding olive oil, pesto or BBQ sauce at this point if tastefully appropriate. The S'more pies are good but be sure you ask the staff to warm it up if you're dining in or warm it up yourself if you're taking it to go. The Red-Orange Lemonade (the name could be off) is great as well but can be super sugary so be forewarned. A special note regarding the staff at this location: If you frequent here enough they're very open to developing a good customer relationship with you and if you're constantly on the go and happen to order a pizza or two (cough cough 3) throughout the week they'll start remember your order and have you taken care of that much quicker, which is always appreciated! As of 12/31/2014, price was $7.95 for a create your own pizza with unlimited toppings! Such a great deal! I can't speak for everyone on the size of the pizza, but I'm a 27 year old male and I had no problem eating the entire pizza myself for lunch, and with the crust so thin I didn't even feel bad about it! Super fast make your own pizza. After you choose the crust, sauce, cheese, meat and vegetables, they finish baking it in the stone oven in about 5 minutes. They offered unlimited topping for one price, so naturally I overloaded my pizza with...basically everything. There's really no combo that can go bad in my opinion. But if you're afraid of creating a monster, they have pre-selected options as well. The pizza was good in that it exactly what I expected, but the sauce was delicious as well. Not the best-pizza-I-have-ever-tasted good, but decent and fun to personalize. For dessert, I tried their s'more...not as great as the pizza I think. But maybe that's because I can throw together three ingredients for yummy homemade s'mores more easily than assembling a whole pizza. The worst cross contamination I've seen in a while. If you're a vegetarian or don't eat pork, this is for you. Went in today for a couple pies. Apparently there was a deal so I couldn't pre-order. That's fine because they're supposed to be quick. My friends waited in the car while I went in, but because of the same deal, I can only order one pizza?! Seriously?! The line moves quick, so I go through with the create your own. I add spicy red sauce, check. I ask for mozzarella and goat cheese, PAUSE! The cheese and meat are right next to each other. The lady in front of me ordered bacon, sausage, etc. Service person reaches her gloved hand into the bacon and sausage containers, and sprinkles away. Back to my pizza, I ask for two cheeses. The same service person puts her bacon greased gloved hand straight into the cheese. The service guy next to her even tells her not to. She proceeds with putting her hand into the goat cheese. I cringe and state that they are cross contaminating, and they just stare at me! I look around at all the containers of toppings, and barely any of them have spoons or scoops. Pros: vegetables red sauce they call your name out real loud Cons: cooking time/temperature for dough not so good after it's cooled down Only one size pizza: 11 inch. Tips: Repeat what you want because person taking your order doesn't necessarily communicate that to those who put your toppings on. Make up a fake name that's easy to hear/for them to pronounce. Something like Sally, Jimmy, or Mario. Blaze has a Subway style setup running. They swear they can cook your pizza in three minutes. You order your pizza (with no expectation that anyone else knows what additional toppings you want) and then proceed down the line letting the staff know what to put on it. Veggies seem fresh! Workers seem a bit slow with pizza assembly but that will improve over time. Upon consumption, the pizza has a great overall look and smell. They fire up your pizza super fast which crisps and toasts the dough but leaves it somewhat chewy on the inside. In spite of being a very thin crust this is still obvious. Sauces and veggies are great but the pizza seems to lose a lot of appeal as it cools down so it eat it fast! After that it's meh. Soft drinks are standard: Coke Zero, Mello Yello, Barq's, etc. Homemade lemonade is slightly tart, low sugar, has a hint of that taste you get from a canned drink. Disclaimer: I went on the day they were giving away free pizzas. Yet I did not expect the delay I experienced. Any time anyone gives away free anything it's normal to expect a long delay. So I was ready for that. waiting in line: 35 min. time to receive order: 40 min. After spelling my name wrong three times I watched as my order was passed up time after time. I did realize they were extremely busy due to the free pizza offer so I waited patiently. And waited. And waited. Finally someone noticed that a specific ticket was still there after some time and then it took three workers to figure out how to correct the issue without making it too obvious a mistake had been made. They did finally ask me what my order was and proceeded to give me an empty cup as free drink condolences. I am thankful to Jorgie who took the initiative to ask questions, apologized for the mishap, and kept me up to date once the error had been caught. I ordered a Build Your Own style pizza, and I got the spicy Marinara Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, Parmesan Cheese, and a variety of their vegetarian toppings. The pizza was really good, and the way the place works is pretty self explanatory. The one downside was that it was really crowded the day I went, and as a result the staff there was a little less friendly. However, on a normal day it should be ok. read more

Today, I messed up my colleague's order (got regular cheese instead of vegan cheese) and didn't realize it until after a few minutes of waiting. When I notified them that I placed the wrong order, they quickly made me a new one and even remembered all the ingredients that I had originally asked for (yep, they made it with vegan cheese). No one was rude or gave me attitude about making a new one even though it was my fault for being so absent minded. The staff was still friendly and accommodating as they usually are. Exceeded my expectations, for sure. First of all, I love that there is a set price and you can load on as many toppings as you want. The only upcharge I noticed was for vegan cheese. It's one of my least favorite things, ie the guacamole larceny at Chipotle. I built my own with classic red sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, feta, pepperoni, crumbled meatballs, jalapenos, red onion, green pepper and finished with pesto drizzle. Everything was super fresh and delicious. It is definitely a smaller pizza, but was larger than I thought it'd be and is a good amount of food. Perfect lunch portion, although at dinner time a side would be nice - breadsticks? I think they do sell salad. The only slightly negative I can say is I had a couple of spots that were kind of chewy. The nature of quick cooking. If you prefer crispier pizza, just ask and they'll leave it in for a few extra seconds. I've been to a similar pizza joint called Ubuild It Pizza and it was pretty much the same... including the logo colors and all. I asked the employee to make me a White Pizza (the one on the menu) minus the bacon and with additional ingredients. She said she was just going to have me do a build your own pizza. I said yes but can you first put on all of the ingredients that are listed under White Pizza minus the bacon, and then I would tell her more ingredients to add. After she put the white sauce on, she did not budge... so I started listing off the ingredients....I realized once I started eating my pizza that she never put any mozzarella cheese on the pizza... I've been there a few times. All of their staff are incredibly friendly, the pizzas are delicious- but my last experience...I'm not really quite sure how to reach out other than yelp. I was at lunch with co-workers on Monday, and unfortunately someone in the dining room stole my wallet from my purse. Once I realized it was missing, I alerted a staff member, who got a manager for me. Next steps included the manager taking down my information. Similar to other 5 minute pizza places I have tried in the burbs, Blaze gives the loop a quick lunch pick up spot for the 9-5ers with a craving for pizza. I like that they have a quick order menu, a 1 topping and a build your own. I really liked that they offer "Simple Pie" a basic sauce and cheese for those who just need something for the train which leaves in 15 mins! Lucky for me it was 4:30, no line no wait. Simple pie took 5 mins and it was actually delicious. I got mine with spicy sauce and mozz, a little parm and some oregano. i like the fact that take out boxes are thick enough to keep it warm. They ruined what used to be IMO the best gluten-free pizza in the city. Backstory: I ordered this pizza with the gluten-free crust for months. It was delicious. The crust was thin, well done, and it tasted as good - if not better - than the regular (gluten) crust. Recently, however, they started using some sort of a rubberized bottom tray - on the gluten-free crust pizzas - as they are baked in the oven. This completely ruins the pizza and, frankly, makes it nearly inedible. The crust comes out almost raw, extremely soggy, and impossible to handle. The entire pizza is less "done" than ever before. This concerns me because some of the ingredients at the bottom still look and taste raw. I'm not sure what possessed them to use that rubber bottom when baking gluten-free pizzas, but it needs to stop. It ruined an otherwise perfect pizza. It tastes terrible now and it's a complete deal breaker. I'm also concerned about the hazards that such a rubber piece poses to my health when it goes in a super hot oven with my pizza on top of it. They went from making the best gluten free pizza in the city to the worst, overnight. I just don't get it. I realize that gluten-free dough may or may not bake as well as regular dough, but they used to make it right. What happened? read more

To start, this IS NOT CHICAGO PIZZA, but it is DAMN GOOD PIZZA. If your pizza isn't good, you are to blame, plain and simple. The only downside to the pizza's here is a result of the way they do it, the dough in the center of your pizza is going to be a little bit chewy. But from order to out in under 10 mins for a delicious, 11-inch, made-to-order, customized pizza... for less than $9, you'd be crazy to complain. The ingredients are fresh (or at least very much appear to be so). The staff takes really good care of the dining area and you constantly see cleanup work being done in the open kitchen, a very big plus for a city that has a lot of 'hidden' kitchens. This place is hopping during lunch, always a line. I prefer to hit it up between leaving the office and getting home, also a safe bet for you rail commuters, just a block from Ogilvie and less than a 5 minute walk from union. I've never been in line after 5pm for more than 3 or so minutes. Every single employee there seems happy. They are kind to the customers as a result. Each and every person I've talked to seems to take the "We treat you how you treat you" approach which is always awesome. They don't just throw your food together and ignore you like most fast-casual dining restaurants. Side issue here.... how do more people not know this dining style is called fast-casual? Stop calling it "like Subway" .... End Rant I've been back... too many times at this point, constantly shoving ingredients together like sardines in a can, and each time it's turned out well. Take any classic recipe and butcher it to your liking. Add extra veggies, cheeses, sauces, spices, sauce-drizzles to your heart's content and eat 'til you get your fill. Hard to find a meal in the city that is this good for under 10 bucks, I'll keep coming back when I'm in the mood for some good eats. My only pro-tip, ask for your pizza to be well done. The service is very fast here. The line can get pretty long during lunch hours but they are so efficient so it's not a long wait. I always build my own pizza with white sauce, mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, sausage, black olives, mushroom, artichokes, arugula, chopped garlic, black olives, and pesto drizzle. DoorDash claims they got a bad address from Blaze (I ordered on Blaze website). So I was stuck in the middle without pizza. I just wanted my money back, but manager hung up on me the first time (he later stated he got busy). Called back and nobody answered. Called from a different phone and he told me to call corporate because only they have the addresses to tell what happened. He stated phone number was on website. 3rd time I called back because there is no phone number on the website. Then he insisted that I ordered incorrectly and it was my fault that the order was lost. Last night, the Blaze team hosted my work group for a private event. From the moment we walked in the door, Shantrese and her team provided top-notch service. They were warm and friendly, and Shantrese went out of her way to take care of each and every one of us, as well as the patrons who weren't able to come in the restaurant because we had rented it out. Even being in the customer service industry for many years, I've rarely encountered anyone as customer-focused as Shantrese. Had lunch there today and was awesome! Loved the build your own option: great selection of toppings and really appreciated and enjoyed being able to have a gluten free crust option and spicy marinara topping. Tasted great and the service was unbelievable, every single team member there was extremely friendly and hospitable - my friends and I all felt the service was like eating at a high end restaurant. I'm giving this location 5 stars for service and 5 stars for value for sure. This is a fast food style restaurant- it was about 10 minutes from walking in the door to receiving a perfectly cooked pizza. This particular location had the friendliest employees I've ever encountered in a "fast food" style restaurant- they were very helpful as well as I had never been to this restaurant chain. I ordered one of the pre-styled pizzas from the list, and it was delicious. This place is a great idea when you want pizza and have a lot of people with varied tastes in your group. I looked around when our group of 5 all had their pizzas- and we did not have any toppings that repeated- so this is an ideal place for us. The restaurant was also very clean and comfortable (temps were chilly outside but perfect in the restaurant). Also love their Sunday hours- not a lot of places open Sundays in the downtown area. If I lived in the city I would definitely come back, and I'll probably check out other Blaze locations in the burbs in the future. read more

Blaze Pizza left me wanting more--- MUCH more This is a review of the 511 S State St location. Seriously, guys, almost TEN dollars for a super-lightweight shell with NO visible cheese after "blazing" (I did see them sprinkle on some cheese, albeit very sparingly but there wasn't any that we could see or smell or taste on the finished product), a scant smattering of what tasted like very cheap pork cheap pork sausage (and they called this, I believe, the "meat lovers" pizza-- what a crock)-- actually, all we could taste was sauce, and some onion-- I think that was about all unless I am missing something-- oh yeah, the oregano which didn't add any weight or bulk to it??!!-- Come on. If it were $5 or $6 each, I MIGHT be back if I were super-hungry and I had no other options.... but this is a HORRIBLE attempt at "pizza". This is NOT a pizza. Not even close. Not when you can walk a relatively short distance to one of the REAL Italian pizza places around and get SO much more "bang for your buck". Like Pat's on Clark, for example, or Exchequer on Wabash where, for around $24 you will get a SUBSTANTIAL, lip-smacking delicious REAL pizza SERIOUSLY loaded with meat, cheese or whatever you want and STILL have leftovers and smiles the next day to feed your inner hungry. But, as I walked out of Blaze yesterday with my takeout order of two "meat lovers" pizzas, I immediately noted the LIGHTNESS of the two boxes which caused me concern because we were hungry. I mean, these boxes weighed essentially nothing. And, when I got them home (we live right nearby so I had high, high hopes that we had found a new "go-to" pizza place, as I had heard good things and read some good reviews but I can only conclude that those people know NOTHING about what "real" pizza is), it took us all but a scant few minutes to suck down these wimpy things and I was worried that my beautiful wife was still hungry-- she dieted all week in anticipation of our inaugural (and, as it turns out, our last) trip to Blaze-- while we are used to GOOD pizza that would fill us up. Here's another telltale item: in our building, we are supposed to take used pizza boxes downstairs rather than put them down the trash chute lest then clog it. Well, there two wimpy boxes were so small that I simply threw them out with the rest of the trash. The both fit neatly into one small plastic garbage bag. Shame on you, Blaze. You left us wanting. And resentful. And feeling shafted. My prediction is that no way this joint will have lasting power and will likely be out of business before too long because, quite simply, they fail to deliver. My husband and I brought in the free pizza coupon (AWESOME MARKETING TOOL!), and we were greeted enthusiastically upon entering. PROS: Friendly, happy, excited staff that calls you by name like at Starbucks Lots of topping options (like Subway but with pizza) Thin, healthy crust (gluten-free option if you have an allergy) and DELICIOUS sauce (I had classic) Super fast service (cooks in 180 seconds) Very cool and modern atmosphere (feels like a bar almost and hey, they do serve wine and beer!) Variety of salads if you want a side Great location (we stopped in after a trip to Walmart---convenient!) CONS: Wish they had bread sticks! I would've bought some to go w/my free pizza.
