For a recent work event, my company catered in food/ desserts from a bunch of different San Antonio restaurants. As part of the order, the team ordered brisket, pulled pork, turkey, sausage, potato salad, beans and the fixings (bbq sauce, bread, pickles, onions, etc). I tried a little bit of everything - it all looked great! All of the meats were cooked nicely and didn't have a kick (spiciness) to them which can be a problem with sausage at many bbq places for me. I did think the brisket, pulled pork and sausage could've had a bit more "oomf" to them to make them stand out but I also can't put my finger on what they needed. The turkey however was perfect. The potato salad was a huge hit and I couldn't get enough of it- yum! On the other hand, the beans and bbq sauce were a miss for me and I was so glad they were on the side. One bite of beans and a taste of the bbq sauce were enough for me - no thank you. Overall, the food was good and I enjoyed it but this wasn't the best BBQ I've had in SA. The location of the restaurant is convenient to my house and office and easy to meet at with friends but I'd rather drive a bit further for something a bit more noteworthy. read more

Food in San Antonio I find, it matters what side of town you shop for a great bbq dining experience regardless of take out or dine in. This is not my usual and definitely not good at all. Service I ordered thru the drive thru and asked for a little time as I was unfamiliar with and new to this business (the establishment NOT bbq). I told the lady it was my first time. You'd think this would be a clue to any service representative to introduce and perhaps make recommendations to the customer; that's good business and representation of your brand. She didn't have a clue nor caught it. Food again: I ordered a 2 meat plate & 2 sides. Brisket & sausage with mashed potatoes and green beans. The brisket was all lean pieces and with a few more minutes of air exposure would have completely dry. The sausage, where do they get theirs. Low-grade greasy (as sausage usually is) and nothing to come back for. The green beans were loaded with the thick slices of the onion and some kind of meat. They did nothing to add flavor. The mashed potatoes contained pieces of skin if you like your potatoes done that way. Had she given me a few suggestions perhaps it would have been a better experience. But if you are driving from one appointment to another and see this place or any other that is not you usual, drive by and save your "taste" for your go to bbq. Overall pretty good. I got the 1/2 chicken which was very tender and had good smoke, the borracho beans which were very different from what I'm used to. It was definitely thicker and more like a chili. First thing you notice is all the signs on the door! Walk in to a bunch of picnic tables and even more signs. It's confusing and overwhelming. Someone shouted "welcome" but no one offered assistance or any directions. I saw the self service kiosk and ordered food. It said take receipt for your drink cup. Again no help and had no idea where to get my drink cup. My food came out right away. Then I had to hunt down utensils and napkins. Chicken tenders were not fresh. The breading fell right off. Not flavorful and really hard. The French fries should be called wedges. They were good but almost cold. Mac n cheese was ok. Less skunk signs and more clear directions would be nice. I picked up a Turkey Plate for Thanksgiving. I wasn't sure if it would be any good, but I was pleasantly surprised. The smoked turkey was good, the dressing was good, and so was the potato salad. They did include a good cream gravy and cranberry sauce. I also ordered a slice of pumpkin pie. It was a little small but was pretty good. They packaged everything very well. Blanco BBQ has sadly started to go downhill lately and tonight was bad enough to have me post this review after giving it multiple chances the past few months. It's a convenient neighborhood spot that I have enjoyed going to over the years, but sadly recently the quality of the food and especially the service has absolutely tanked. The prices are high, but the level of the food/service was more than enough to offset and still made it a good value...until lately. I got into the drive-thru line at 8:40 when closing is at 9. I ordered the 4 piece chicken strips, substitute the gravy for BBQ sauce, with mashed potatoes and onion rings for the sides. It super complicated and no comments from the lady taking my order. About 20 minutes of waiting later I get to the window. The gentleman there then tells me that they just threw out all the mashed potatoes and all they have left are green beans, borracho beans, and cream corn. A bit annoying that they'd throw food out while people are still in line (two cars still behind me), but things happen. Get the food and head home, where the 4 piece with BBQ sauce is actually a 3 piece with gravy. Which is odd because there isn't a 3 piece on the menu, so all I can imagine is that is what was left over and it was thrown into the box hoping I wouldn't notice. So over 18 dollars where the only thing accurate were the onion rings. Very disappointing and sadly I can no longer recommend people visit Blanco BBQ. read more

Last month, I attended the Air Force retirement ceremony of my cousin, which was hosted at Blanco BBQ. It was a rather rainy and cold day, but the greeters warmed us with their Texas smiles and hospitality. As I scanned the room, I noticed even the rain couldn't stop brisket loving Texans from coming out, as the front area was nearly full. We were escorted to the back area and informed that our party's reservation was only for 2 hours. While the guest arrived, the team placed bowls of fried okra, mac and cheese, onions, bread, smoked chicken, brisket and pulled pork around the table. The set up was nice as we moved about from table to table adding smoked meats to our plates. Lord knows 7 days into my New Years Resolution I wanted to be stronger... but alas, the smoked meats and cheesy mac were calling my name (foodie issues)... New Years's Resolution aside, I strolled the table, laddering food for perfect placement and settled into my seat to discuss the military career of our honored guest. The food was delicious, and I'll add that extra attention was paid to the perfectly crispy bites of okra. I will say that the smoked chicken was my favorite and had a nice hint of smoke to it. We dined and laughed, but our party seemed as if we had to rush to eat, as we were reminded a few times that our time was shortly coming to an end. While there were many tables in the back area, they quickly filled up with other patrons to watch the NFL games. I knew it was a wrap when I saw the staff packing up the leftovers and hovering nearby. I can't complain as my tummy had reached capacity 30 minutes ago and the lids on my eyes were getting heavy (lol). But as a lover of sweets, I dived into my cake and sipped on some sweet tea (needed more sugar) while others said their goodbyes. At the 2-hour mark, our party was politely reminded that our reservation had expired and we hugged and parted ways. What I like about Blanco BBQ is the amount of room and ambience in which you get to enjoy your generous portion of barbecue. We were there to farewell some friends and so it was nearly 8 families with 1.5 each taking up the entire back patio for meat and cake. The main dining area is lit up by incandescent and vintage neon signs. There is a party room in the back, another patio out front and a drive thru. All in all this place is size-able I found the brisket to be a bit dry, but it wasn't tough or overdone...I just like moist brisket. I'm certain it would have been fine in a brisket sandwich. The sausage and smoked turkey were great. The charro beans, onion rings, potato salad were all very good. They have a one meat/grill cheese and one side option for the kids. The sides vary, but again the portions are aplenty...so, if you get the side that you love you may fill up in those. There's a trough of beer and soft drink bottles up front and fountain drinks in the back, to include southern sweetened (extra sweet) iced tea. The staff is friendly and they bus your table. Super nice offering to take your multiple trays to the table. Just north of Hardberger Park, and you can miss the big since 2013 neon sign in the front at night. My biggest complaint is the BBQ isn't that great.....sides included. Baked potato was served hot and was good... Service ..::no waitstaff, you order and pay at the front. Line usually quick, sometimes feels rushed. Special instructions usually ignored. I really want to like this Place....I really do. Place is rustic and cozy.....lots of seating(no padding so you sit on wood that tortures that rear end) The Live Music was very entertaining by Bobby. Lots of oldies and mostly goodies. Just the right volume and mood I think if they make the BBQ beef and turkey more fresh and keep it at least warm. Watch serving those crappy dry end cuts.....pretty gross.... My husband and I had lunch at Blanco BBQ on a Saturday afternoon and we really enjoyed it! The place is large so even though there were lots of cars in the lot, there was plenty of open seating. We both got the 2 meat plate with 2 sides. Portions were generous, the meats were tender and flavorful, and the sides were very good. The background music wasn't playing super loud so we were able to converse without yelling, which is always nice. We'll definitely be back when we're on that side of town. read more

The brisket was extremely dry and you could visually tell that it had no moisture at all. Had to drown it in BBQ sauce to eat it all. The sausage was great and juicy where that would be what to get again. The side of potato salad was pretty bland and I only took a few bites. The fried okra was on point. One of my favorite BBQ places due to location, taste, comfort, size of restaurant, and good food. We called ahead to secure a place for my daughter's birthday with 35-40 people expected. They have a party room that seats big parties, and if you want it private use, they charge $200 for the room for 2 hour use. The back patio, which is uncovered, is free, but they will reserve it for you with a contract and a credit card for incidentals. Same for the front patio, which is covered and has a tv, heaters, and seats about 80+ people and was perfect for our group with enough privacy and comfortable for toddlers to run around, safely. It was a little chilly, but the overhead heaters made it comfortable for us. We did a tab for food and closed it out after everyone ordered. You have the option to order meats in bulk for your group, as well as using the menu that worked well. We had chicken tenders, hamburgers, brisket and chicken, sausage, carrots beans, fried okra( my favorite side), cream corn, mac n cheese, onion rings(super delicious), potato salad, sweet tea, beers, and lots of fun! I want to give a shout out to Ms Patty, the catering manager, for taking care of us and helping ensure that my teenage daughter's party went well. I had reserved the front patio, but apparently, I somehow did not realize the contract never went in, and they had sent me a cancelation notice, but I missed it. I will mention, though, that there was another manager for the restaurant, a Hispanic woman, who was very salty with us when we arrived and went to check in. I've tried a few things from here and I have to say ordering catfish at a bbq place was skeptical but very worth it! The catfish was fresh and had the right ratio of batter to fish. You can order either the 2 piece or 3 piece plate which the 2 plate is two piece of catfish, fries, 2 sides and a drink for $14 and the 3 piece plate is 3 plate is two piece of catfish, fries, 3 sides and a drink for I think $17. I do enjoy their self served pickle station because you can get as much onion, pickles, lemons you want. I highly recommend the spicy pickles!! Soo good. Their tea is very good as well. I had never tried the macaroni at Blanco BBQ and absolutely fell in love with it. It was creamy, flavorful, and the noodles were nice and big. Such a fun local spot!! First off-they have a playground so any parents-this is such a bonus!! So much seating and the layout is huge throughout the indoor restaurant and outdoor in their backyard/patio! The weather was perfect and so was the food! My husband had sausage platter with Mac and cheese and fries and it came with white bread(you can ask for butter) so if you are a British lover if Butties(bread with butter and whatever you want inside) then you will be a big fan like my British hubs!
