Definitely a hidden gem. Driving back to Houston from San Antonio and searched for a place with a lot of choices for our family. It's about 2 miles off I10, small place with a bar and open dining. We felt the prices were reasonable. Got fried pickles for appetizer and they give you a really good amount. Great fried pickles! Three of us ordered the chicken fried steak and all three ate the entire thing. The batter was flavorful and crispy, gravy was good, our sides were all great. Tater tots were crispy and onion rings were big, batter was great on them as well. Even our little side salads were great, bacon bits and a good ranch dressing. One of our party ordered the sirloin steak and while it needed more seasoning, the medium cook was perfect. We have now bookmarked this as a great choice for road trip dining off the beaten path. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by our experience here at Blake's. Many times we have drove past this place never coming in. This just goes to show you should not judge a book by it's cover. First of all there is enough parking behind the restaurant for our boat. Secondly our American style food was excellent. I opted for a medium cooked cheeseburger with all the fixings. It came with one side. I chose fried zuchini which was yummy but my husband's onion rings we're better. They also served a brown bread with butter. It tasted homeade and was tasty fresh. If I was not stuffed by lunch I would of finished it off with the German chocolate cake. The food was great and the service was also. The waiter had a cute Southern accent and he said Blake's building was 125 years old. It was also decently clean. I saw a handicap ramp and the bathroom was large enough for a wheelchair. This is the best diner around!! We always have excellent service. The draft beer is cheep. The patty melt, chicken fried steak, swiss mushroom burger, steaks, and fresh bread is always delicious. Like Mom's cooking if she was a chef. I had fried shrimp, fried zucchini and green beans. So. Good. We passed plates around and I tried the chicken fried steak and the grilled chicken breast. Located in downtown McQueeney Texas, the specialty here is prime rib at a moderate price. For this reason it draws consistently good crowds. I recommend ordering the onion brick - onion rings raised to a higher level. They serve small loaves of dark warm bread with butter while you wait. In the comfort food department, their chicken-fried steak and hamburger steak smothered in onions and gravy are also winners. Oh yes, and beer on tap. All served up in an historic setting. read more

Disappointing meal. Have been going to Blakes for a long time usually to have fried catfish. Went last night and something not good has happened with the fried catfish. Totally different catfish. Very different pieces, breading and the way it was fried. It almost seemed to me that this might have been frozen and not fresh catfish. Food was over fried and had no flavor. So sad to see this happen. Will not be going back to Blakes. Will instead be going to Clear Springs cafe in New Braunfels for catfish in the future. Our waitress told us other diners had also commented on the change in the catfish. Hope Blakes will take notice and take steps to remedy this situation. Very disappointed customer read more

I used to come to this place years ago but it's not the same. I got the patty melt, the bread wasn't toasted and the cheese had a freezer burn taste. The patty itself was decent. Over all, the food just wasn't good. Im not saying I'm a food expert, but the food all around the table wasn't really appealing. The staff were nice, but like I said, nothing great about the food. It was all frozen and canned stuff. It actually gave me a stomach ache. I knew that they used to have a roach problems, but not sure if they still do. read more

Nice little café in a small town. Had the Sheri's Favorite salad last night. Was looking forward to the red onions and boiled egg but the onions were cut too large so didn't enjoy them much (had to cut them up more myself) and the egg had no flavor. The bacon in the salad was the best part and I usually don't go for bacon in a salad. Hubby had the the meatloaf special. He liked it but he said he wished they would find a way to keep the sides warmer. The fried mushrooms are good but you have to cut them in fourths to eat them cause they're so big. I would prefer smaller mushrooms that I could just pop in my mouth whole. I have ordered the mushroom Swiss burger before and it was good. Also have had the chicken Parmesan when they've had that as the special and it was amazing. Large chicken breast served over spaghetti. The staff there are always as nice as can be. If you're into quilting, there's a great quilt shop right next door. read more

We were seated quickly, despite a full parking lot and restaurant! Stopped in on our way home from San Antonio based on the Yelp reviews and it was definitely worth the stop! Our waitress was busy, but attentive. The food was excellent! We started the meal with perfectly breaded fried mushrooms. Hubs had fried frog legs which were, again, perfectly breaded and cooked. I had chicken fried chicken and the kiddos had a burger, blackened catfish and chicken fried chicken. The portions were more generous than expected and we were not able to finish all of the food, but we certainly left satisfied. Definitely recommend a stop if your in the area! read more

Been here a few times before and the food was exceptional but today was like it was a different restaurant. Ordered fried cheese as an appetizer, you gotta love gouda, turns out that I now know that I don't. No problemo. I ordered the soup and salad. Salad was great but the soup lacked. So bland and room temperature to boot. Hubster ordered the large ribeye steak medium rare with potatoes au gratin with green beans. Bland, room temp and cold described it all best. Service was even bland, but she was courteous. Didn't inform us, until we asked for the check, that she took off the fried cheese (there's the plus). Fantastic food, friendly service, and vegetarian options! While vacationing in Texas, I had the pleasure of stopping at this lovely roadside cafe. Great little place open for lunch & dinner off the beaten path. With 16 people I called an hour before they opened & they had us a table to go when we arrived. The owner didnt like how two of our kids chicken sandwiches looked so they gave them another piece of chicken, complimentary, without having had any complaints on our part. One of the best chicken fried steaks I've ever had..real steak, not cube steak..and tender! The 4 stars because the place/building could use a little maintenance. But you can tell it's a well liked & cared fur restaurant. Go for the 8 ounce, 10 ounce takes up the e tire plate! Good eating here! read more

You really don't have a lot of options for restaurants in McQueeney, so have dined at Blake's multiple times. The food is usually good though have noticed more over cooked or mediocre dishes served. Sunday lunch service is on the slow side. I'll probably eat there again just because I'm in McQueeney and there is nothing else read more

Blake's is a very good joint. It definiately has that small town Cafe feel to it.....and is professionally run and consistantly good. Schoebels is about to open on 725 at IH35 and I sure hope people don't get lazy about driving the five miles or so east to McQueeney to patronize Blake's. I have to admit......I've been to Blakes' a dozen times and have ALWAYS ordered the Prime Rib. My guests have ordered many of the other things on the menu but I go for the best Prime Rib for miles and miles. All the sides and desserts are perfect.....and the service is alway thoughtful and good natured. Its just a great experience....goin to Blake's. Same kinda feelin I get going to Tip Top in San Antonio........Satisfaction...that's the ticket. Can't remember whether they do liquor or not.....I always drink longnecks. If you're anywhere near New Braunfels....drive east out 725 to Blake's in McQueeney ..........great place to take your company to for a little rural Texas flair......with great satisfying Texas food. They have another one in Luling next door to the Barbeque joint.....I'm sure it kicks ass too. read more

I'm such a fan of this place! Not only because it's so close to my house but because you feel so welcomed when you walk in! It's an old style bar/restaurant setting. It's an old wooden building with a full bar, the deco is old metal signs posted all around this place :) When you walk in you wait to be seated, not for long, before you are escorted to a table or booth with a friendly Texas greeting. Keep your eyes open for the daily special, or ask your waitress, it's worth the price and very yummy. Last time I visited it was a Sirloin Steak + Shrimp and Bake Potato ($7.95) can't beat that! Their menu is very broad, you can order Steak, Seafood, Sandwiches, or Salads. Everything is made fresh and made to order. Order a beer with your meal to wash it all down! read more

The place is out of the way of most traveled roads, so you must be going there in the first place. I decided to try it since each time I passed it the parking areas were full. The place is not much to look at inside or out but the food is good even when it is served cold. My wife enjoyed the Sirloin Steak & it was fairly reasonabled priced. The Strawberry Shortcake was great also. My Chicken Fried (small portion) steak was good as was the Fried Zucchini but the corn was cold and flavorless. The appetizer (fried mushrooms) were also great, got the half order and it was plentiful. They charge $1.50 extra if you want a salad as a side. The three stars are for the cold food and slow staff. We had to ask the wait person for steak sauce and other condiments that are usually offered when the meal is served. read more
