So, we have driven by this place so many times, and always wanted to try it...so we did....and now I wish we would have kept driving! The service was subpar, waitress Ivy didn't appear to know what she was doing, I can forgive that tho because she was nice, maybe she's just new? The chili cheese fries were good, but we actually ordered tots, and after putting in our order, Ivy waited for over 10 minutes to let us know they were out of tots...but again, we can forgive that because the fries were good. So, my daughter ordered chicken tenders and I ordered Nashville hot tenders....these were far from tender, they were like a texture between beef jerky and rubber....we did like our sides; mashed potatoes, so we ate those, but were unable to eat the chicken. Ivy asked if we wanted boxes to take the chicken home, I let her know that we were unable to eat the chicken because it was so tough (I wasn't able to tell her until the very end because she was MIA). I told her that we wanted this taken off the bill minus what we ate. She said all she could offer us was 50% off the two plates, at first I thought that was ok, but it was not! If I could give a negative star I would. Went here for an early dinner, about 5:15. We were seated immediately as there were only 2 other tables in the entire place. Got our drinks quickly too. Then, they completely forgot about us. After about 15 minutes, while we watched several more tables get seated, we asked another waitress to let our's know we were ready to order. After another 10 more minutes, nothing. More tables were seated and we watched them place their food orders. Finally a waitress showed up and tried to act like nothing happened and she was rushing. When my husband said how about an apology?, she was very rude and NOT sincere in her half ass "sorry 'bout that". We just said forget and got up to leave. She very loudly shouts very sarcastically FINE! HAVE A NICE DAY!! Literally the entire restaurant looked up! When we got to the hostess, we asked for the manager and was told there wasn't one. And again she yelled at us to have a nice day. Completely sarcastic! So the service sucked to say the least! And while we were waiting all that time, I had a good look around the restaurant and honestly wasn't sure I wanted to eat there anyways. It's filthy!! The dust bunnies on the walls and what looks like garage sale decorations were all covered in dust and dirt. My daughter & I were in Sequin, TX and it was dinner time. I looked through Yelp to find some place other than fast food to eat. She wanted steak. I told her we could go here, but it would be a little drive, so off we went. Generally, I wouldn't drive far for just a "cafe", really! There is a lot of history in this building, it originally was a Post Office in 1897, which eventually closed. Then more was added on and it became a General Store, then an IGA. It has been home to a few other businesses before becoming Blake's Cafe in 1998. The parking lot in the back is gravel. The front of the restaurant has a long covered porch. The interior is full of old metal signs, lost of just rustic/vintage/eclectic mix of things. The tables have vinyl green plaid picnic table type of coverings on them. It is a very laid back atmosphere in here. The place did not have very many diners, but that just meant we didn't have to wait for a table! I hope they are busy on the weekends! There is a fairly big bar in there. They serve you a complimentary and delicious warm loaf of bread with butter. We started off with a house salad that we killed in no time flat. We were hungry! Then we ordered the Ribeye Steak, large cut, with mashed potatoes and gravy. Everything was really good! We were both glad we came here to have dinner. We had a nice & friendly waiter, but we couldn't quite understand him completely. He understood us, so that's what mattered. If you're willing to drive a bit to a town called McQueeney for some grub, then come on out! read more

Sad, sad, sad, one of our favorite places to eat on Friday nights has gone down hill, first off our salads had wilted lettuce, my husband's prime rib was tasteless, the ouija was made from a packet, he believed the flavor was artificial tasting. Green beans were from a can and bland and over cooked. The most disappointing was they no longer serve that yummy bread to your table. All and all, it was a bland meal and the place we use to love has seriously went down to our least favorite. We will not be returning. read more

When visiting family down here, our spot was always Blake's as the service was always great and the food even better. Unfortunately though when coming around earlier this week it was different - our families original orders like the Swiss Mushroom burger had no flavor, it was just like a normal burger with a slight crunch from the mushroom, but when trying their new sweet potatoes fries they came out cold. What a hidden gem. We were in the area and just out for a drive and we got really hungry and decided to try this place. It is what I would call an out of the way place. You already have to know it's here or be looking for it. But don't let that keep you from coming. It's worth the short detour. (It's not on any major road) The food is what I would call American. Steaks, Seafood, Pork Chops, Burgers. The wife had been wanting Chicken fried steak and got a lunch size. She thought it was fantastic, this from a woman that makes the best CFS I have ever eaten. I tried the Patty Melt. Angus beef on marble Rye with swiss and grilled onions. It was very good along with the crispy hand breaded onion rings. (you get three options for sides). The ambiance it cool, retro American and the service was excellent and friendly. We will be back for sure. read more

I was driving around taking photos, when I saw a Guadalupe County Sheriffs Deputy stopped doing paperwork. I drove up & asked him to suggest a really good place to eat. He suggested Blake's Cafe like this: "Oh! Go to Blake's. If you want a good place, that's the place around here." He was spot on. I went in, was seated right away by Leann. She was also my waitress. I had the chalkboard special, which was catfish nuggets & shrimp. I chose my sides to be green beans & mac & cheese. That was a delicious meal. The shrimp were fried perfectly, as was the catfish. Yummy! The green beans were perfectly flavored & fresh. But, that mac & cheese. Oh my! It was some of the best I've had in years. It was creamy, not too cheesy, the macaroni was perfectly cooked. My mouth is watering as I type this review. Just YUM! I'm not one to eat left overs, they never taste good later. Well, Blake's food was almost as good after reheating. Honestly, nothing's is as good reheated. But, this was. I cannot wait to go back & take my Dad. Not too far from home. I'll be back by myself again, too. Thank you for the excellent service, food & break while I enjoyed my food. Truly a great place. We used to eat here often their prime rib was wonderful, but after Covid they really went downhill. They no longer serve bread, never have prime rib, shrunk their dinner salads and raised their prices. I don't mind a business raising prices in this economy it's necessary and understandable but sacrificing the quality and portion and options is a no for me. Had Friday lunch here with my mom. She recommended it as we were passing thru to New Braunfels. There wasn't any parking when we first arrived but soon became available as people left. Plenty of seating inside, we ordered lunch specials with tea, I had the chicken fried steak and moms had the catfish with onion rings. Both dishes were excellent, onion rings stood out to me, as the rest of the meals were pretty good too. Service was friendly and nice. After making it through COVID we decided to return to one of our favorite restaurants. What a mistake. First of all they now only have Prime Rib on Fridays. We came down from San Marcos specifically on Saturday night for Prime Rib, they no longer have it on Saturdays. Sad,, Ordered the grilled Pork Chops with mash potatoes and a salad with thousand island dressing. The dressing had way too much pickle in it and that is all I could taste, The Pork Chops had no flavor except for the char of the grill. I believed, like at most restaurants, they would be have bone in, but they were 2 little pork loin size, The mash potatoes were a little dollop size and unimpressive taste wise, My spouse had grilled chicken, green beans and rice pilaf. The Chicken had no flavor and was over-cooked and dry. The green beans were bland and mushy, the rice pilaf was just rice. I know times are hard for getting help at restaurants, but the servers looked like high schoolers with no clue how to wait on tables. Our server took our drink order, a tea and a diet coke, and returned a minute later asking who gets what? Once our dinners were served, the server didn't return to check on us and we had to ask others for refills. The restaurant closes at 8pm (on a Saturday?) and a large family (8) arrived and was seated about 7:45. At 8pm the servers began to pick-up the dining room chairs and place them upside down on the vacant tables, even right next to us. This is a practice usually completed at most restaurants when the customers are gone. To customers still seated and eating this is extremely rude and appears as if they are trying to rush folks out. They even stacked the chairs next to the table they had just sat and who hadn't even ordered yet. All in all it was a disappointing evening and so sad that a once vibrant restaurant has declined. read more

Before I start, I will say the service and atmosphere of this establishment was top notch. The waitress was very friendly, and prompt. Now for the food.. The food was terrible. I had the fried pork chops, with tater tots and mac & cheese. The pork chops looked like they were out of a bag from the frozen food section from HEB. The batter was soggy, greasy, and it had no flavor. I didn't have high expectations for the mac & cheese, but it also tasted like your generic over the counter crap. Other orders around the table included liver and onions, a veggie burger, and a cheeseburger. Not one person raved about their food, and also echoed my complaints of the food not being fresh. They said all of their food tasted like frozen TV dinners, or something out of a can. This was our second attempt at this place. We won't be back, but applaud the great service. read more

Firstly, this place is uncomfortably hot with no circulation. Only 2 ceiling fans in the entire place actually work. It took 45 minutes to get our food. The fish and shrimp were good. The daily special looked and smelled great. It tasted good too but the chicken was tough. Our server had a pleasant smile but was entirely dismissive. She didn't ask if we wanted to go drinks even though we asked for to go cups. I expect more from Blake's. It's been around a long time. read more

I think the previous reviews pretty much have it right. The food was just average diner food; for comparison, it's about equal to G G's corner cafe in Marion. As you walk into this hundred year old building, there's an eclectic mix of decorations, none of which shows an organized theme. There are old gas signs, skulls, and you name it, they got it. My waitress, sierra, was excellent, as well as the cook who brought my chicken fried steak in about 3 minutes after ordering it. The homemade bread was pretty good, and I like that every table gets some. I chose the chicken fried steak with okra and mashed potatoes. Also, instead of the white gravy, I chose brown gravy and sauteed onions. The brown gravy tasted almost canned; the chicken fried steak while good, had a little gristle in it and should have been tenderized more. The mashed potatoes were lumpy. The okra and that bread were the best part of my meal. So, the food gets a 3, and because of the friendly, excellent service, I'll bump them up up to 4. read more

I so was looking forward to this visit! We stop here every time we're on I10 and it's always been very good. But I couldn't eat my shrimp bc of the salty breading, and they had flattened them in an effort to butterfly them, but they were over fried, and hard. My friend's pollack was good, but in perfect triangles, as in frozen fish sticks. The service was also lacking. The staff only came by when we flagged them down. And there were only 3 other tables of diners, so not busy at all. I guess everyone is entitled to an off day, so we'll try again later. But today's late lunch was very disappointing. read more

Nice place, but don't get the apple pie. The crust wasn't fully cooked and tasted bad, apples were so so. We didn't eat most of it.

We drove out from San Antonio because it's good! Blackened salmon was a perfect medium rare. Salad is always fresh and everyone is friendly!
