I am lucky to work close enough to here. Their happy hour oysters are the best deal in town. $1 for boutique oysters. Calamari is good. Crab cakes are good and full of crab. These arent terrible. I went here for lunch for restaurant week. i definitely recommend it. i wish i had written this right after i went since i have a memory of a goldfish, but of what i remember, it was definitely worth the trip. the appetizer was good (i believe i had the Addie's mussels, a bit too salty for my taste but full of flavor and mussels were well cooked, not overdone at all). for the entree i had the chef's pasta, which was great, the pasta was done al dente =) and the flavor of the fish was not overpowering. and to top it all off, the truffle cake was good .. glad we had only a small serving since it was very sweet and filling, but a great way to end the meal. the service was spectacular (very helpful in recommendations and knows his fish;) ). definitely would go back, the menu doesn't seem too harsh on the wallet for lunch ;). oh and the calamari was one of the best i've had =). read more

Love love love. Great cocktail options. Inventive seafood for DC and very good quality seafood. We got a bunch of the appetizers to split, salads, and desert. Everything was wonderful. Cannot wait to go back to try the entrees. Top notch: Butterfish with Maine Lobster and Mango - honestly it felt so decadent, it was delicious and just the right size portion Tuna Tartar with avocado - holy moley, just get it and get into it Octopus - very good - I don't love baby little octopus (prefer bigger ones), but this was excellent and the pork sausage sauce was divine Peanut Crunch Cake - MAN! I'm not a big desert person, but I was craving it - this was excellent - it's rich, but not TOO rich. Sweet, but not TOO sweet. Not super heavy, and just the right amount of dark chocolate. I never order cakes or heavy deserts, but this one was worth every bite. And the peanut brittle that comes with it is so good. We also got the Hamachi Sashimi (very fresh), Sardines (not my fav regardless of place, but other really liked them), and cheese plate for desert. I have a serious passion for food and dining out. I make an effort to try new restaurants, whether it's casual or extreme, as much as possible. With that said, I have gone to A LOT of quality restaurants in the DC area. BlackSalt is DEFINITELY one of THE BEST restaurants in DC. In fact, my dining experience there definitely makes my top 10 of all time! BlackSalt is a seafood restaurant. If you don't love seafood, do not come here. I went a few months ago, so my memory might be a bit blurry. We had called maybe an hour before heading out to eat. Unfortunately, the restaurant had no available seating, but we were able to sit at the market that is literally connected to the restaurant. The menus are exactly the same. The only thing that is different is the atmosphere, but I think the restaurant was just as good as the market. I went to dinner with the BF, and we like to go all out (we were very dressed up). We arrive and are brought to our table, which was right by the entryway of the actual restaurant. We could see the large glass display of fresh seafood, which they claim to have been brought in every single day. Our waitress was AMAZING. She was extremely friendly and helpful. She made our dining experience a 5+. Throughout the night, we must have gone through a bottle or two of red. I don't recall which reds they were, but the waitress allowed us to try them before purchasing the bottle. It was such a nice experience to interact with the waitress and do a little wine tasting. Appetizers: We started off with Caviar. I believe we chose the farmed Italian Osetra. It was served with warm blini, onion, creme fraiche, and chopped egg. The caviar was absolutely divine and worth every penny. We could not have enjoyed it more. We ordered a few of the boutique oysters and a few of the premium oysters. The oysters were absolutely delicious! I could literally taste the ocean after slurping up each one. The third and final appetizer we shared was the wood grilled baby ocopus. The octopus was so fresh and tender. All three of these appetizers were amazing and I highly recommend all of them. Entrees: I chose the wood roasted North Atlantic swordfish. It came with grilled eggplant, english peas, olives, and a pine nut-anchovy butter. The dish was so flavorful and hearty. The olives and eggplant was a really nice touch! Unfortunately, I was already full from the appetizers, so I was not able to get more than halfway through my entree. But, it was so delicious and I highly recommend it! Dessert: We were STUFFED and DRUNK! But, we were having such a great time.. how could we not end it with something sweet? (I told you, we really go all out.) We ordered the trio of creme brulee: butterscotch, white chocolate-raspberry, and milk chocolate hazelnut. This dessert was TO DIE FOR. All of them were so delicious! I adore the food here. I went out on a Monday night around 8 and it had a steady crowd until I left at 10:30. I had the oysters...SO fresh and delicious. I'm not sure which but they brought out the 3 best. Then the flounder as an entree with gratin style potatoes and asparagus.. YUM. So much flavor from the lemon and the Parmesan. I would definitely get this again. The waiter was knowledgeable and friendly and so was the rest of the staff. BlackSalt is fantastic for happy hour. If you can brave traffic on M St, you'll be richly rewarded. Try to sit at the bar with the regulars who know what's up -- service is slightly better at the bar in my opinion. Everything on the happy hour menu is delicious and pares well with even the least expensive wine. The small plates are so addictive, that you don't even notice when you've ordered too much. This is a good thing. I have never been here for a proper dinner but I hear that it is expensive and not as satisfying as the happy hour unfortunately. If you feel like classing it up, take an Uber or your car to BlackSalt. Something different than the happy hour at the typical neighborhood pub, I promise. read more

I visited BlackSalt with the family for a Sunday dinner. We were seated right next to the kitchen and they had sliding doors with glass panels so we could see inside. Being able to watch what was going on while munching on a bread basket with 4(!) different kinds of bread while waiting for our food to come out was kind of awesome. For an appetizer, I tried the Oysters Rockefeller. Oddly enough, I didn't get a whole lot of oyster flavor out of them, but spinach + bacon + subtle oyster was plenty good. I also split the fish of the day and the Bigeye Tuna entrees. I actually don't remember what fish the fish of the day was, but it was grilled and served over noodles, bok choy and shrimp and had great taste. The Bigeye Tuna was probably my favorite dish. Seared sashimi-grade tuna and braised pork belly with pickled vegetables and squash, which seems like an odd combination but worked surprisingly well with the combination of flavors/textures from the tuna and pork belly. For desserts I tried the Trio of Creme Brulee and Key Lime Pie. The Key Lime Pie was paired with a blueberry compote and was excellent, and they really went an extra mile on the Creme Brulee presentation - each one had a selection of toppings/decorations on it. Everything I tried was fresh, delicious, and well-presented, and the service was outstanding. The waitstaff was happy to answer any questions we had about the menu and did a great job taking care of us. BlackSalt's prices are definitely on the higher side, but it is well worth if for the quality of food and dining experience. read more

I went here for the HH on Monday, and the experience was forgettable. Even though the place was near empty when we came in, the service was still poor since the waitresses are not a fan of making eye contact with its patrons. At one point, our bartender even talked smack to us on a guy who just left because he talked too much. She's not lying but it just seemed like odd behavior for such an establishment. For drinks, I ordered the champaign cocktail cassis which was okay. The oysters were very fresh and easily the best I've had in DC (better than Pearls and Hanks). The crabcakes were also part of HH, and we got that which was two small medallions and it tasted like filet-o-fish from McDonald's. This is not a criticism of the crab cake but a compliment to McDonald's! We also tried the burger which was good and had a smoky flavor of a backyard bbq. Lastly, we got some brownies and cookies from the store front for $1 each and this was the tastiest/ best valued item! Overall, the oysters are spectacular and everything else was just "aight." We managed to still spend $55 for two people which is not the cheapest date but still a lot less than dinner here. read more

Quick service, great food. I had the wood grilled octopus as a starter and the bouillabaise for the main. Dessert was ice cream in the flavors of vanilla, coconut serbert, and the star - mascarpone and ginger! The wood grilled octopus was very lovely with capers and veggies mixed with the octopus. I thought it was on the salty side but it might have been the capers. The bouillabaise had some type of chunky white fish, scallops, shrimp, and mussels. Everything was very well cooked and in a stewy sauce that was almost like a soup. Loved the crusty bread that came with it. Oh yes, I ate way too much bread at this place. They also have very fluffy, warm bread when you first order, so I had way too much bread overall. Dessert was my favorite bc i love mascarpone and i havent had it since in tiramisu on my birthday a few months ago. Fantastic happy hour -- 7 days a week! $1 oysters (usually 2 choices) were really high quality. Fish and chips were super (but an app sized portion); hand cut fries and really high quality halibut (I think, or cod, a really firm ocean-going white-fleshed fish). Also the "seafood stew" is very similar to a boullibase which they have on the main menu, but I haven't had that version so I can't say if they're the same. Also, they're really nice. No rushing at the bar, even when it's packed. When I called to make President's Day weekend reservations, they could only accommodate us for the first seating, but *unlike* some other places I called (*cough*, Blue Duck Tavern), they were really nice about it and told me to try back in a couple days for the 2nd seating because ppl sometimes cancel. I wish they weren't quite so metro inaccessible (always need a DD to get there), but overall a very pleasant experience. read more

I am new to DC, and am not usually a fish fanatic, but had a great meal at BlackSalt. I decided to have three appetizers instead of the usual app/entree combo simply because the starters looked so good and there were 5+ that I wanted to try. I had the fried oysters, the spanish mussels and a special recommended by our (extremely helpful) waiter: Ichidai Sashimi with Sea Urchin. All were really good! The oysters were nicely sized, moist, flavorful and not too greasy. The mussels were served in a tomato and chorizo based sauce and were really tasty. The chorizo lent a nice meaty flavor to the dish and the tomato broth was rich. The Ichidai was an interesting fish (not one I had heard of) and although it was a bit chewy, it had complex flavor. The sea urchin was not my favorite, but I had never had it before and was happy to have at least tried it. The dish came presented beautifully, draped over a japanese style salad featuring radish. I also had a Bourbon Manhattan which was delicious! Finally, we decided to share a strawberry shortcake (a special for dessert). Although it was simple, it was well prepared. A rich and shortcake (think sweetened biscuit) split in half filled with freshly whipped cream and delicious strawberries. A great finish to an excellent meal. This place was a bit pricey by my midwestern standards, but the fresh and flavorful seafood was well worth it. Didn't have a ton of time to look around the fish market that filled the front of the restaurant, but at first glance, it looked to be well stocked with lots of interesting and fresh fish as well as other gourmet delicacies. read more

BlackSalt is a truly delicious, high-class joint. It is actually much larger than it appears from the street, with multiple dining rooms, a full bar, and a fresh seafood bar/shop. The selling point here is that all the seafood is extremely fresh and comes from the in-house fish market. Furthermore, the portions are actually quite large (large enough to share if you aren't starved) and the plates are full of intricate flavor profiles. Service is also very attentive and helpful. Overall this makes it well worth the price--and yes, it is quite pricey. The mussels are especially good. As is the whole branzino and the seafood curry. Another plus is that you can have any fish from the market cooked however you please, adding endless options to the already large menu--oh the possibilities (however this can be problematic for pisces like me!). So why the 3 stars? Despite being yummy and a good value, BlackSalt lacks that "je ne sais quoi" that leaves you wanting more. At the end of the day, it's just another nice, somewhat expensive restaurant with fresh seafood. read more

Had another great experience here which was nice since the madre was in town visiting. I wasn't thinking it at the time but this is a good place to take guests or dates as it's a nice, trendy atmosphere which somewhat laid back and it's in the Palisades area so you can take a walk through the neighborhoods and walk off your dessert...which you should get of course. My mom definitely "won" on her dinner - she got the Atlantic Bigeye Tuna with caramelized pork belly. It was outstanding. The ginger-soy broth it came with put it over the top and we were all jealous. She also picked the Key Lime Pie for dessert and loved it. I got the Soft-shell Crab - also good, it came with 2 crabs on top of a delicious veggie and green chile succotash of sorts. My wife got the Wild Halibut which she liked but wasn't crazy about. I think we were jealous of the tuna dish. Don't forget dessert! The Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Cake is a must if you've never tried it. Key Lime Pie is one of the best I've had. (Points for actually remembering that I had told them it was her bday - do you how many times I tell restaurants that its a bday or an anniversary, etc and when we get there they act like I didn't mention anything when making the reservation?) My new favorite seafood restaurant. Service is highly professional, menu is creative, and food was delicious! Atmosphere and overall dining experience amazing. Wine selection second to none. Brought my 3 kids; chef made food to order for them. Even my picky 11 year old son loved his meal. Then their driver took us back to the hotel. He spoke more languages than I did. If you have larger party try to get table by kitchen. Glass wall opens to make it akin to a chefs table. I will travel back to DC just to dine here again. I do love the fact that you can go hear when you need a piece of fish. There is nothing better than being able to satisfy every fish craving that you have whether it be something simple like some butterfish to triggerfish, to caviar this place has got it. Of course the wine selection is awesome! I sat at the bar to have some torbreck which was only about 20 dollars or so over retail which was a relief. Had the anchovies which sat on tonnato which was creamy, salty and herbaceous and had a nice clean finish. The grilled octopus was next which was nice and tender with a wisp of the ocean when eating it. The oysters rockefeller was a little salty but went perfectly with my syrah. The chowder is what I think every chowder should be. Short and abbreviated and I think that it is a perfect choice for a cold night to warm you up....this really is a comfort food. To finish the meal I had the taglitelle with a veal ragu. Yesus it was good I mean it was Fiola good! Handmade pastas in this area usually don't have a nice chew to them but this definitely did it was definitely comparable to any of the great italian restautants in the area. A little assertive with the seasoning but again it was just a punch of flavor in the face! I think that if I wasn't so damn full I would have ordered another. Shit I need to go on a diet. The manager sent me home with a dessert the coconut banana cream pie. So good! This was simply the best meal that I ever ate by myself and at the bar non the less. I will start with a 4 star review, but may bump it up to 5 if the restaurant meets my expectations. The seafood market here has the best fresh seafood. We gotten halibut, scallops, tilapia, shrimp, red snapper, and arctic char from here and it was all great! Even one time they were low on scallops and the fish monger went to the restaurant and took some of their scallops to meet our demand! They also carry many other good items such as the spicy seaweed salad, great French butter, and amazing blueberry cookies. If you enjoy cooking seafood, buy your fish from here. Best steak I've ever had. Is that weird? Yes, I know it's primarily a seafood restaurant, but I couldn't help but order the Filet. What I don't like? a) I can't remember the name of what I ordered b) I went to their website to look it up and in order to see their menu, I have to download a plug-in # FAIL no thanks. Boyfriend got the seafood stew (not sure if they still have it, we haven't been for a while) and it was also awesome. Service was pretty great (I wouldn't expect anything short of stellar when I'm paying $200 for dinner), and we even got to dine a couple tables away from Rosario Dawson. The restaurant itself is pretty cool - open kitchen, which is nice because you can see everything that goes on. The problem was that we sat RIGHT by the kitchen, so everything came past our table, and the space is so small that we almost had to suck-it-in every time someone wanted to walk by. We ordered ice cream for dessert - over priced but delicious. I gave it 3 stars because the space is a bit cramped, and while the food is stellar, it is just a bit overpriced. 3.5 stars. I had very high hopes for this place, and whil it certainly wasn't bad, it wasn't great. We did the tasting menu, which was basically just a sampler of stuff from their regular menu. I like to think of a tasting menu as a chance for a chef to get a little creative, not just give you smaller versions of the stuff they always have. Also, two of the courses were basically the same, both flaky white fishes pan-seared and served one right after the other. I finally made it over to the mystical land of Palisades and had a wonderful dinner here. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the fish greeting us at the door upon our arrival. We were early to our reservation, so we decided to have a drink at the bar. Happy hour on Saturday= awesome. We had tasty Grey Goose martinis. For the menu, I appreciated that there were options from the market not listed. It was nice to have so many choices. I settled on a crab cake appetizer (because I'm boring like that) and the bouillabaisse entree. The crab cake was somewhere between an appetizer and an entree as it was served with delicious vegetables. The bouillabaisse was fantastic- the broth was flavorful and the prawns were wonderful. I also had a taste of my boyfriend's baby octopus appetizer (it was just the right amount of crispy). Dessert was fantastic, we had the trio of creme brulee. I think the butterscotch was the best. My girlfriend and I are seafood lovers. We inhale oysters and truly enjoy a nicely prepared piece of fish to the point that we talk about our seafood outings for weeks. The oysters at BSFM come in whichever quantity you like, as well as combinations. I believe this restaurant carries about 5 kinds of "absurdly fresh" (like one of the reviewers said earlier) oysters. They ARE good, big and juicy! There is nothing better than a huge meaty oyster enhanced with just a squeeze of lemon juice (to bring out that metallic fresh sea flavor) sliding down right into your stomach. Pure joy! Also, we enjoyed every bite of the perfectly prepared salmon and scallops... Hands down, this is the place to go when you have fish cravings. No disappointment guaranteed :) read more

Creative design as you enter through a fish market and proceed to the back, where you're seated with a full view of the kitchen. Even though you smell fish at entry, they do a good job ventilating the place as this doesn't disturb your meal at all. Many styles of fish all paired well, and they take advantage of seasonal ingredients (fiddlehead fern and pea shoot salad). My only complaint is that we did not have one dedicated waiter- unusual for an upscale place. Rotating wait staff is more common in cheaper/fast places. Still highly recommended! read more

I will start by saying I don't do restaurant week. I forgot it was restaurant week. My party of 3 arrived at 1:15 and we were seated right away. We were given the menu, but were not told about the oysters. We asked about it and that was after we ordered our food. The food was okay. It was not a lot and that was fine. We did the restaurant week menu because most of us don't eat meat, so that was our best option. Right after the dessert was served and we were still eating, the waitress came over and gave us the check. She did not ask if we wanted another drink or anything. This is my favorite seafood restaurant in DC. It has excellent fried clam appetizers, but really we have never had a bad meal there. The chowder also is excellent as is the seafood stew. For lunch, my mother even loves the hamburger. One of the great things about the place is the flexibility. We have gone there on couples dates and with our kids. We have even rented out the back for a party. Yes, it's not cheap, but it is a great value for the excellent food and service. One bonus is the fish market. Not only will the prepare anything they sell, but they often have true sashimi grade tuna which you can take out and prepare at home (as well as so many other great fresh fish). read more

I had the opportunity to visit this quaint little restaurant tucked away in the Palisades for dinner with friends on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised. First and foremost, right upon walking in, BlackSalt is a fish market. Fresh seafood is proudly displayed on top of pounds of pristine shaved ice. Its presentation was pretty impressive. The fish market was remarkably clean and contemporary and the seafood looked and smelled fresh... more of an "ocean" type smell than a "fish" smell if that even means anything. Now I'm rarely ever brave enough to cook seafood at home but if I did, I would love to say that I buy my seafood fresh from BlackSalt. Just beyond the fish market is where the bar & dining area is. You would think that, visually, a transition from a "fish market" to a cloth napkin bar & dining area would be a bit too drastic but in this case; they somehow managed to make it work. It was all very quaint. The raw bar was decorated with the same contemporary stainless steel chairs and fixtures like that of the fish market. Unshucked oysters were displayed on top of shaved ice built in to the middle section of the bar and there was still ample room for your place mat, wine glass entrée and side plate. I was with a party of 6 and we actually opted to sit at the bar for drinks and food and take advantage of the happy hour specials (daily from 5-7pm). The drink menu listed a "Pimm's Cup" (Pimm's, Ginger Ale and shaved ice) that one of my friends suggested I try. I'm glad that I did. It was as refreshing as a summer breeze. I immediately ordered another from Jenny, our friendly (and adorable) bartender. Our group ordered from the happy hour menu a number of small plates to sample from. The fried Calamari, fried Ipswich clams and fried Salmon Cakes were among them and they were very good but also typical. The Oysters Rockefeller, Oysters on the Half Shell and the PEI Mussels were my favorites among the small plates. I'm not, by any means, an oyster connoisseur but the oysters on the half-shell were appetizing, smelled like the ocean and tasted really fresh. The mussels were also outstanding, served in an herbed-broth with a hint of curry. For my entrée I had the Seafood Stew, which was absolutely amazing. The shrimp, mussels, fish, and calamari were served in a light broth. However, what I remember most was the perfect combination of baby spinach and garlic that seemed to bring together the entire dish... very light and flavorful. For dessert, you definitely do not want to forgo the Peanut Butter Crunch Cake with Bananas. Another perfect combination. Need I say more? I'm already looking for a reason to go back! read more

We asked for a quit; conversation friendly place as we were there for business meeting and we were put in the wine cellar which was a very special touch. Everybody loved in essence going through two doors or what seemed like a vault to get to our table which was in the back of the cellar. If the noise level is important to you, definitely make arrangements in advance and sit in the cellar. I wish I remembered what I had as it was terrific. However, we all loved what we had and from what we could tell everybody in the place seemed very happy. From what I could tell the place had about half locals from the neighborhood and half business or political types. All in all great experience. Only downside to the place is we had incredibly hard time getting cab. Called and waited for 45 minutes or so and finally were lucky to find one just going down the street in front of MacArthur. I came here for brunch. A fine Sunday afternoon spot. We started with an oyster sampler. They have a wide variety of oysters. We a bi-coastal tasting. We had an order of the Shrimps and Grits, the Egg Benedicts, and the Louisiana Poached Eggs. All of them were delicious. However, I will say I was not a huge fan of the poached eggs. One of my favorite seafood restaurants in the DC area. The seafood is always fresh and tasty. The happy hours are great and the staff is friendly. I love the little market in the front so I can take something home to make for dinner or lunch the next day. Their condiments and sauces are awesome. I like to use their butters and seasonings to make fish/shrimp/scallops or saute vegetables at home. Give them a try. It's not cheap, but will be money well spent! read more
