    Bouillabaisse

"Food is excellent, portion sizes are somewhat large, and the taste is delectable" was the review our 9-year old gave after sharing mussels and the bouillabaisse with his grandmother. The service was impeccable, and we really enjoyed the open kitchen and the vibes of the restaurant. When you walk in, you're overwhelmed by the display of fresh fish, which can all be cooked to order. What a great experience! Can't wait to return to DC to go to this one.

3.5 stars. Tried the wood grilled calamari and catch of the day. Food was fine, but nothing special. The squid and fish were cooked well, but the flavors were just okay. The fish was small in portion too.

Fabulous dinner here! Everything was wonderful from the service to the food to the wine. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area!

BlackSalt is well worth a visit. The restaurant has a beautiful space to share a meal and has a little market up front with a selection of things like pasta and drinks. The fish all tasted really fresh and dishes were really good. Our server was very sweet and attentive. The bread they start you out with is really yummy and we loved that they had three different types on the plate. The seafood tower was pretty big and everything was fresh. The oysters were the best but the crab meat was also pretty tasty. We got the popular crab cakes for our main and loved them. The crab cakes were pretty big and were incredible. I've gotten them before and I will keep ordering them as long as we come here. All in all, this is a great restaurant for an awesome dinner.

My husband and I visited this place for the first time and had a wonderful dinner. The waiter was very helpful and friendly, and the food was impressive. I ordered tuna, while my husband had salmon. The poke was also tasty, and we enjoyed all the food we tried. It was an excellent experience! Highly recommend

Nothing but good things to say. A bit off the beaten track but worth the trip. We checked out happy hour right before dinner. Oysters rockefeller was excellent! Adies mussels were good. Calamari was a good portion. Drinks were good and not watered down. Staff were extremely nice and inviting. There's a fish market up front and the restaurant in the back. Not too big but intimate. Try sitting in the Cafe to have access to the happy hour and dinner menu. I will be back to try more things!

Came in to celebrate our anniversary. Service was great (they even had custom menu's for us saying "Happy Anniversary"). We really enjoyed house bread and the appetizers, butter poached lobster and the best clam chowder I have ever tasted. My wife also really liked her halibut. I was not as impressed with the Japanese stew, of which some bites were quite good and others were so full of the shredded ginger to be almost inedible. Some of the seafood also was very over cooked and rubbery. (I have had the provencal stew in the past and greatly prefer it). Desserts were also very good. Service was great and as good or better than you'd expect from a place at this price point. There was a large party nearby, which was very loud. We didn't notice until after we were seated and we could still hear each other most of the time, but it definitely subtracted from the experience.

This place is so cute. Bar area was really busy. And they do have dining room that reminds me of Vintage style. Menu was well curated and service was great I got tuna tartare. Was great. And octopus salad. No complains. Crab cake sandwich was delicious. Followed by great desert. Chocolate mouse i believe with ice cream. They had many different oysters and more interesting dishes. I will try to next time. Friendly bartenders. Parking - street. Wasn't too hard to find. On sat late afternoon.

The wood grilled Ahi Tuna that made me swoon!!!

To stay…read moreby the side of our elderly dog, we are foregoing the experience of dining out, more and more. After we finished eating, she remarked we needed to visit the restaurant sometime. We'll have to look for an opportunity when we are around the dog all day, so she can be on her own for a couple of hours, likely sleeping. Birdsong already is acclaimed. This is much more Thai and Thai American. Like Chinese or Italian cuisine before it, Thai flavors have assimilated to a palate not accustomed to the true strength of the spices. Birdsong is a remedy. They do not offer the pad thai that has become a staple, no longer exotic but to its detriment. (A digression. The history of pad thai, with contested origins, is fascinating. As you delve into these matters, you see how syncretic culture is. You also are exposed to the efforts to fashion a unifying mythology.) We ordered the chicken, the shrimp, the crab fried rice, the papaya salad, and the enhancement. The chicken and the shrimp were quality ingredients, prepared well. Although both proteins were fried, they felt clean. The crab fried rice was one option of many with the rice base. The papaya salad was fresh. The enhancement was radish with "fermented daikon, garlic, red onion, cilantro, palm sugar, and fish sauce scrambled with eggs for a balanced savory and sweet flavor," and the portion was generous: we put it on the rice, then I finished it off in an omelet the next morning. We have traveled to Bangkok. Thai spiciness exceeds what I would endorse, and I love hot dishes. Birdsong was much milder, though with sufficient pepperiness my wife, who does not share my preferences, remarked it was closer to her limit. They will work with you in this respect, and I'm confident I could request something that would test my capabilities. That is, in my book, all positive. The dishes that were mild according to the menu, were mild, but they were flavorful. If you do not like fish sauce, for example, you may not appreciate the offerings, which if they don't have fish sauce have something along those lines. I hope Birdsong fares well.

We were looking forward to eating at Birdsong, which has gotten great reviews. A few friends said…read morethat they went and loved it. But we thought only one of the four dishes we ordered was especially good, I wouldn't order the other three again. The Basil Shrimp - described as "Battered and golden fried" seemed more like tempura. I wouldn't have ordered if I knew. The Tom Yum soup was good, but very pricey at $25. For comparison, a similarly sized, likely an even larger entree Tom Yum soup at Bambu is $14. It had lots of noodles. We were sharing, and asked our server for recommendations- she suggested a second dish with the same noodles. Usually a server points out if diners are ordering two dishes with the same base ingredient (noodles) but our server actually suggested the second one. Seriously? And unfortunately, it was underwhelming, just blah. We left most of it. We got the chocolate crème brûlée, the presentation was very nice, with gilded peanuts on top. The taste was just so so, sweet but not much chocolate flavor. We liked the decor and the atmosphere was nice. We loved the bird mural. Service was mixed. Our server was friendly, but could have been more helpful. First, the recommendation for a second dish with the same noodles was not a good one. We asked if we could share everything, including the soup. We specifically asked if they could put it into bowls for us. They brought two bowls, but we had to wait a while for a spoon to divide it ourselves at the table. She ended up bringing us one of those small soup spoons that you often use for soup at Chinese restaurants. It was around the same size as a regular soup spoon. Apparently they didn't have anything that is more like a ladle, and it was not very useful for portioning out the soup. We thought we'd love this restaurant, but it was a miss for us tonight. Not only that, and this is on us, the only dish with any real nutrition or healthy ingredients was the soup. For one "small plate" appetizer, two entrées and one dessert, the total was just under $100.

I have been here more times than I can count -- birthdays, reunions, happy hours, celebrations with friends, and even dinners with my Assistant Principals to celebrate the end of the school year. At this point, it's more than just a restaurant to me; it's become part of my favorite DC memories. What makes Joe's stand out is the consistency. The food is ALWAYS good, the service is polished without feeling pretentious, and the atmosphere gives classic upscale DC dining in the best way possible. Located in a beautiful historic bank building downtown, the restaurant has a timeless elegance that immediately makes any dinner feel special. The history behind Joe's -- dating back to the original Miami Beach location that opened in 1913 -- adds another layer to the experience because you truly feel like you're dining at a place with legacy and tradition. The famous stone crabs absolutely live up to the hype. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly paired with the signature mustard sauce, they're one of those dishes you think about long after dinner is over. And surprisingly, one of the BEST things on the menu is the fried chicken. I know it sounds crazy to order fried chicken at a seafood restaurant, but anyone who knows Joe's knows exactly what I mean. Crispy, juicy, seasoned perfectly -- it's comfort food done right and honestly one of the most underrated dishes in DC dining. Even longtime fans online constantly rave about it. Their brunch is another reason I keep coming back. The energy is upscale but relaxed, making it perfect for celebrations or a nice weekend outing. The seafood platter is incredible if you want to sample a little bit of everything, and it's always beautifully presented. From the crab cakes to the oysters to the lobster, you can tell the quality is top-tier. And of course, no visit feels complete without dessert -- the key lime pie is legendary for a reason. One thing I appreciate most is that Joe's works for almost every occasion. You can go for a professional dinner, a birthday celebration, date night, happy hour after work, or just because you want a really good meal in a beautiful part of Washington, DC. I've celebrated some major milestones here, and every visit reminds me why it's still my favorite restaurant in the city. If you're looking for a place in DC that combines amazing food, history, excellent service, and an upscale atmosphere that still feels welcoming, Joe's is absolutely worth experiencing at least once -- although chances are, once won't be enough.
