Et Voila is a cozy bistro with old world charm. It is snug and people crowd together to enjoy a good meal and perhaps a few drinks. If you enjoy the French/Belgian classics, then this is as good a choice as any. The cuisine features sauce - lots of it - in almost every dish. You will find it in the escargots, the duck confit, and the steak. And of course the mussels are bathed in it. But hey, you came to indulge, did you not?! You could choose broiled salmon and salad, and still be happy though. I want to like this place more than I actually do. The food is not mind- blowing. The service is a bit impersonal. Something is missing from the tableau, je ne sais quoi. The highlights of my meal were the outstanding french bread, which is served warm, and an excellent glass of Chateau Neuf du Pape, chosen by the waiter. I was recently introduced to Et Voila by some close friends, and was blown away. It has a cozy, French/Belgian bistro atmosphere that welcomes you in to sit awhile and imbibe some great wine and delicious food. Outstanding! I have been three times in two weeks. I love their menu and the quality of the food. Locals have been telling me to try this restaurant for a while and I finally did. Very happy with service, and all of the menu items we selected. The desserts proved to be exceptional. Seating is a little cramped in some areas of the restaurant. I don't like squeezing between tables to sit down but space is a premium when they have a large clientele. Reservations highly recommended and needed Can't imagine anyone being disappointed here. An excellent French/Belgian bistro hidden away in the Palisades! I've been in this area a thousand times but never stumbled upon this place until now. Here's what we tried on our first visit: Eggs Meurette: poached eggs with bacon, roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, and a red wine sauce on English muffin, served with a really fresh and perfectly dressed simple green salad. Croque Madame: Gruyère griddled open face sandwich with ham and a fried egg and Bechemal again served with a salad Fried egg sandwich with bacon Gruyère and caramelized onion. My toddler wolfed half down. Comes with a salad. Scrambled eggs with ham/spinach. Comes with a salad. Lovely outdoor patio but also a sizable and nice and surprisingly large interior. The service was quite friendly and attentive. They were so kind to my grumpy toddler who wasn't the most appropriately dressed after soccer class. Loved our experience here - started with two very chic dirty martinis, delicious, and a French onion soup + Caesar salad. The dressing on the Caesar was amazing (thank you to our waitress (I think her name was Marlena? We loved her!) for recommending!). We had the steak and mussels for dinner, the peppercorn sauce was incredible. Fries were excellent, also just the service making sure we had all the sauces and plates we needed it felt very above & beyond! The mussels were not our cup of tea but didn't affect our overall experience. Had a glass of the Cabernet franc with dinner, amazing, and then topped off the evening with the Yule log dessert! Et Voila is yet another hard restaurant to judge and review. It has many, many good things about it. But, on the other hand, it kept missing the mark and failed to hit a home run in the final analysis. THE VIBE Et Voile feels and seems like the kind of place that should be a star in the dining constellation of DC. When you walk inside, you are transported to France or Belgium rather. It is crowded, busy, it smells really good and the place has an atmosphere of a quaint little bistro. Lots of people are speaking a plethora of different languages at their tables. The decoration is slightly seedy but in a good way - just enough stuff to remind you of old Europe. There are lots of people in the bar talking and laughing. The staff - of which there are plenty - are hustling and bustling around serving their customers. At first glance, this restaurant has what it takes. THE FOOD The menu is great. Mussels for everyone. French Onion Soup! Some fish, some red meat and pomme frites. What's not to like here? But my spouse said his mashed potatoes were the WORST he's ever had in his life and he was right. No amount of salt could improve this dish that any home cook can make in their sleep. What the hell happened??? On the other hand, the baked mussels were to die for, the French Onion Soup was fantastic, the steak I had was perfect! On food, Et Voila wins notwithstanding those awful mashed potatoes. THE SERVICE I really want to write some nice things about the service. Our first waitress (yes, we had many servers throughout our meal) was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. But, before we left, we had no fewer than 5 people serve us. None of them were as friendly or helpful as the woman. It also did nothing to create a relationship with us. The host (dressed up in a big puffy coat because it was so cold outside) was very nice and friendly too. But, I have to say, the service seemed cold and sterile, disjointed and not up to good DC standards. I am sure we will return to Et Voila because the food is worth it (other than those terrible mashed potatoes) but another mediocre experience like this could mean we write this restaurant off of our list! Bottom line - I struggled between 3 stars and 4 stars due to the service and the mashed potatoes. I settled on 4 because, in general, the food was very good. This is called generosity since Et Voila really did not earn all 4 stars - 3.5 maybe. I cannot recommend this place until I go back and I see that things have improved. read more

On a warm summer afternoon, I ambled over to Et Voila for lunch around 11:45am. By the time noon rolled around, the place was packed! This must be the place to be. And when the food arrived, I knew why - authentic Belgian dishes (and beer). I got the beet salad - fresh, firm beets with tart grapefruit and soft goat cheese, very subtle. Then the salmon tartare, also mild, but the salmon eggs added the briny taste of the sea. Add the very friendly service staff, and you have a great lunch on the outskirts of DC. A burger was nicely cooked as a medium which I asked for. The portion was pretty huge. It came with a green salad and fried. Also, we had Alex's cake. We loved Dark and Milk Chocolate Mousse. It was not too sweet. The texture of the mousse was soft. I highly recommended this dessert. The second time I came with my family, As a drink: I had Raspberry Bellini. I loved it. It was very refreshing. I had Moules Diable - Mussels Cooked with Tomatoes, Shallots & Lobster Bisque. The mussels were nicely cooked and not bitter. I really enjoyed lobster bisque. I fell in love last night. With Et Voila!!! This is the fine dining experience that I had been hoping for, for some time now. They earned 5 stars in service, cleanliness, ambience/decor, and of course the food. Ahhh...The meal! Let me tell you about it! Drinks: the Smokeypolitan (really hit the spot) and Chimay White Belgian Ale. Appetizers: Foie gras, which was served on homemade toasted bread, and with a special sauce. We also shared the endive salad, which had just the right amount of dressing (not excessive, thank God!) and cheeses. Entrees: son got the mussels (Moules Diablo) and I had the Flemish beef stew (served with mashed potatoes) Dessert: Profiteroles! Plus a cappuccino for each of us. What a night to remember! I rarely give five stars to a restaurant I'm visiting for the first time; I tend to feel I need more than one visit to be able to give such an enthusiastic review. Et voila -- c'etait vraiment unique. When my friend suggested it, I looked it up online and thought, "Yikes, I'm not in the mood for such heavy food!" Don't let the descriptions fool you -- the food is spectacular, and they accommodate tweaks without hesitation. I had the beef stew -- the beef was light, the sauce flavorful. Rather than mashed potatoes, I asked for brussels sprouts (without the bacon -- I thought that would've put me over) and the sprouts were delicious. My friend had the Sole Meunière and said it was also great (I don't eat seafood so didn't taste it). Save up for dessert. Seriously. We shared a Coupe Brésilienne, and it was a perfect not-too-sweet end to a perfect meal. Our server and the others who worked there were all lovely; the mood was festive and ebullient. Wonderful, very quaint little restaurant in upper Northwest DC! Great atmosphere, very attentive and friendly service, and delicious Belgium food! I got the scrambled eggs with mushrooms, spinach, and ham, along with a side order of Belgium fries and a mimosa. My dish also came with English muffins and a salad, so it was a generous amount of food! The scrambled eggs had a very unique taste to them! Definitely not your typical scrambled eggs. I also shared a sundae that was delicious, and we all really enjoyed the freshly baked, very warm bread! Super friendly waiter, and even the fellow patrons were super friendly! Took my boyfriend here for Father's Day as he wanted to try French food and escargots was definitely on his mind. The restaurant itself is cute and not too big. Great mini patio area. Anywho, It was quite confusing where the host stand was and no one really greeted us. I made a reservation for patio seating, however my boyfriend ended up wanting to sit at the bar which I'm glad we did. I believe the bartender's name is Dusan. He was very straight forward about which dishes he loved, honesty is awesome. I ordered a gin cocktail and my boyfriend got an old fashioned, both we great cocktails and reasonably priced especially being in DC. Alright, for appetizers we ordered baked escargot and mussels. I will have to say escargot is definitely an acquired taste, my boyfriend sId they were ok, but I will never try them again. Not my cup of tea. The mussels were honestly the best thing we had there. It was packed with flavor and the garlic was so pungent. I love garlic! For entrees we got the special oxtail and he got the branzino. Sides of cavatappi pasta, brussel sprouts, and Spinach. Food arrived super cold and quite bland. Out of the two entrees the branzino had a nice crispy skin. I guess I learned yesterday, we are not a fan of French cuisine. The spinach and Brussel sprouts were drenched in oil. Literally nothing but a touch of salt on it. Lack of seasoning. Cavatelli pasta was nothing special either. Again everything was cold and already saw the fatty white parts geling up. My oxtail was unique in execution, but it was not tasty. Good try though... the food was such a turn off I didn't even want dessert. Such a shame because I love dessert. Oxtail was $24 for barely literally an ounce and like 3 ounces of foie Gras mousse and legit half a giant onion layered between that. Branzino was cooked perfectly at $33, for no taste though. Dusan was awesome though. For $160. I would have rather enjoy and leave satisfied with a full belly. Disappointed and won't be driving 35 minutes to come back. read more

4/17/22 While celebrating Easter Sunday at my dad's house, I saw Louis The 14th favorite food was served. A cheese called Brie De Meaux. Well I ate the cheese, but not the rind which is edible for Brie De Meaux. This would appall Louis The 14th and many other people in this world. I don't care for the rind (which is the top and bottom of a hard crust of the cheese). I would be considered gauche ("lacking ease or grace; unsophisticated and socially awkward"...must be so, but I don't gave a...you know what. I am who I am. Moving on, my dad ordered food from Et Volia for the second time I have visited him. The first experience wasn't so good, but this time around, Et Volia has outdone itself. The beef stew melted in your mouth at almost the first touch. The mashed potatoes were delicious and more than enough for five people. The cheesecake (which wasn't from Et Voila) was perfect. I generally do not eat cheesecake, but today is Easter Sunday and I was with family. It would seem when you order from Et Volia, you get some foods that are you get some food that are semi-prepared and you finish the rest of the meal at home. Not sure if this is the French way, but you gotta trust the French know what they are doing. Trust the French?! In this review and from this experience I had, I say "ABSOLUMENT." I can't say how next time will be from ordering take out, but I hope it is magnifique. read more

This experience was extremely lacking in the service dept, but the food was good. Mussels were tasty, fries were definitely good, waffle itself was dry and didn't really have a lot of taste but the fruit toppings were outstanding. Steak was excellent. The desserts were beautiful, taste ranged (and they were not consistent, my friend said she had the same dessert that was warm one time and this time was cold). They tried, not very hard, to accommodate a food allergy, that worked out fine. Regarding the service, wow, it started when our server showed up at the table well after we were seated, to the point where one of our group said "I thought you forgot about us." I ordered the mussels and the waffle, and I ate a portion of the meal with the intention of taking what was left with me to go (not unusual, right?). The server said they didn't recommend taking mussels, I said I understood but wanted to anyway, he said ok he would box it up, then he disappeared. After multiple conversations with multiple servers (I think had a total of 4 by the end of the meal), I asked about the to go box because we had to leave, and was informed the original server went on break and they would never box up mussels, and it was noted in the menu. I reviewed the menu before I even went there (as any foodie would) and I assure you it is not in any of the menus or on their website anywhere. After several rounds of debate (they didn't believe me that the first server said he would box everything for me), they offered to make a new order (which would have been to go, irony anyone?), but didn't really seem to care one way or the other. I did tip on the bill as normal, although I'm questioning that now. It was obviously not the end of the world, but did leave a bad taste for what is supposed to be a friendly neighborhood restaurant. What a disappointment! I was surprised to be able to get a reservation when I called at 6 PM on Saturday, maybe that should have been a warning? They were taking walk ins. I waited outside by the door for around 10 minutes while my friend was parking, not a single person greeted me, asked if we had a reservation, offered to seat us, etc. When we inquired, we were told we had to go inside to see the host. My friend commented that the servers seemed quite gruff. He came from across town, and was excited to try it for the first time. We got the endive salad, which was good. Friend got trout, I got mussels. They were plump but fairly tasteless, the only thing with much flavor was the celery. It's the only time in my life that I had no interest in soaking up the sauce - which is good since it did not come with bread. Fries were cold. The desert was described as homemade dark chocolate ice cream with pralines, but it was tasteless, no pralines, and little if any chocolate flavor, certainly not dark chocolate. I asked the server if it was homemade, he said yes and that I was the only person who had complained. It was not worth the calories, and I didn't eat it - also a first. My friend had said he wanted some really good chocolate ice cream and we considered going to Thomas Sweet, but when I saw that dessert description, it sounded great so we ordered it instead. We both felt we had had a very poor dining experience, aside from the bread, butter and salad. The food was sorely lacking, the service was not gracious, even the chairs and the menus were noticeably super worn out. My friend commented about the paper napkins at the start, I said maybe its the after effects of the pandemic. I went anticipating a really good meal, thinking my friend would be delighted to discover Et Voila. We ended up spending $150 and wishing we had just stayed home. read more

On my suggestion, my son brought me to Et Voila for Fathers' Day lunch. I have been to this restaurant a few other times and liked it. This time I was very disappointed. One of my favorite meals is mussels and prior to this, Et Voila was known for them. The mussel meat served was for the most part small. Several of the shells were empty, without the corresponding mussel meat you would expect to find in the broth. What I did find was a rock! Yes, a black rock, in the broth, discovered as I finished the dish. No harm came to me as a result of it, but I am surprised the kitchen staff could not distinguish a rock from a mussel. Service was also a major issue on this visit. Both my son and I requested our fries to be extra crisp. When they hadn't arrived about 10 minutes after the food, I asked where they were and the server, having been rather curt with us from the time we sat down, gave us a non-credible reply that the kitchen had to do a special order and blah, blah ... in other words, it was OUR fault. No inquiry as to how we liked our food or anything like that. If your curious about the rock, I was going to tell the manager about it, but couldn't tell who was whom, and after the prior treatment by the server, I wasn't in the mood to ask. I just wanted to get the hell out of there. I live in the neighborhood. This was one of my favorite places, but after this experience, I won't be coming back. read more

First off, the decor indoors was what caught my eye. My party of three came here for lunch on a Friday without reservations and were immediately seated indoors. We noticed the main lunch menus didn't have much for a vegetarian, but when we asked the server, they agreed to let us order a vegetarian pasta off their dinner menu for the night. Kudos to them for being so flexible. The food was amazing and portions were great. I personally had the burger, due to the immediate recommendation by the hostess. She was not wrong, as the burger was delicious, juicy, and perfectly topped. My mouth waters just thinking about it again! How this place isn't 5/5 blows my mind. Stan and Negal were AMAZING. Everyone was incredibly safe and distanced. They had dividers up everywhere. Our utensils were sterilized and wrapped in plastic until use. The FOOD was to die for. Made with love for sure. The Chef is the owner. The staff could not say enough good things about him, which made me happy to hear that he treats his staff well. The food was beautiful. We had the Yellowtail Tartare, soup of the day, and warm goat cheese salad. We had the sausage and sole for dinner. Lastly we had the special dessert.
