I stopped by for dessert and coffee. This was a quaint place with pleasant staff. I highly recommend!

That was, my husband and I, our 1st time at Matisse. The décor was quite elegant. The menu offered a nice variety of dishes. We all like the meals that we ordered. It would have bee perfect if: -the $15 blueberry mojito had a little bit more rum. I could feel that it was super light, since after two sips of any alcoholic beverage, I already feel tipsy, feeling I did not get with it. - If we could have had more bread. Once piece was only served at the beginning of the meal. - If the music could have been less loud. Almost a perfect evening!

This was our first dine in meal since covid. We took one of two tables by the open front door. All the staff wore masks and gloves. No one else was in the restaurant. We felt safe. My pinot grigio was very nice, and reasonably priced at $9. We shared a kale salad, with feta, and a nice balsamic dressing. The kale had a fine chiffonade which made the leaves easy to chew. I had the branzino with a side of roasted root vegetables. The fish was cooked perfectly and accompanied with a butter caper sauce. My wife had shrimp puttanesca. With olives, artichokes, and a tomato sauce. The shrimp were large, the pasta was al dente, and it paired well with her Chardonnay. We finished with the apple tart. Flaky crust, caramel sauce, vanilla gelato. The meal was excellent from beginning to end. I understand carrying out to be safe, but there is nothing quite like food just out of the kitchen. With their precautions in place, I feel our decision to eat in was reasonable.

Best intimate, casual French Restaurant. Exquisite soft shell crab, wine pairing, dessert, and atmosphere. Only thing missing is Matisse art! You like Le Diplomat? Come here instead.

Excellent dinner! They have specials of the day and then the regular menu. I had a shrimp & pasta dish that was so delicious. The bar area has a brick exposed wall so it really cozy. There is a more formal area in the back too.

La Ferme - Birthday Desserr

La Ferme

I have been to La Ferme several times, I'd estimate five over a couple decades, for lunch (I…read morebelieve once for dinner). I would eat there again, happily. It is not in a neighborhood I frequent. If you are nearby, you already know the place; it's a posh area, so I'd suppose anyone with a home within walking distance can afford the prices regularly. That is to say something positive. This is a fancy place for an occasion, whether a business function or a first date to impress or a birthday or anniversary. The menu matches the ambiance. It is excellent. It is not nouveau. For example, I have had the escargot starter. I like escargot. The funny aspect of snails is they are, if you look into, peasant food. I mean going back to antiquity. But in our culture, they anything but. They have become upscale now (that happens: consider salmon or polenta). I have had meats and seafood, even calf sweetbread. My wife has had the Dover sole, which I appreciate but isn't for me (it's sophisticated for being mild if you like it or bland if you don't). Service is impeccable. It's the style you associate with fine dining. My goal in writing this little squib is to ensure you know La Ferme is a "hidden gem." I would recommend it to anyone who wants the experience they offer.

You know, every once in a while, a lady has to re-do her makeup. So it is with restaurants and, in…read morethis particular case, Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda MD has put on new makeup. Boy, does she look beautiful now!!! Last time I reviewed this restaurant, I was underwhelmed by the dining room. It was generic, dated and - my main memory - the floor was greasy and slippery. Now, the renovations show a beautiful new restaurant with high end finishes and fancy decor. Whoever redecorated this place did a fabulous job! So, I take back my old review and state very clearly that Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda is stunning, first rate and very high end looking. The food was very good. We started with escargot and mussels. The mussels were a bit bland in my opinion. Yes, there was garlic, yes, there was onion, yes there was wine but the overall flavor was just sort of mediocre. The escargot, on the other hand, were beautifully cooked, prepared and seasoned. The garlic and other seasonings turned what is really just a garden pest into delightful little bite of intense flavor. I loved them! For our main courses, 3 of us got beef. Of course, it was well prepared. The French fries were crisp, hot and lightly salted. I did not want to share them. My zero-proof drink was lovely! I had the grapefruit cooler and it was a perfect balance of tart, sweet and bubbly. This place paid a lot of attention to a non-alcoholic beverage. That says a lot to me!!! The service was not up to the beautiful appearance of the dining room. We had spotty attention and a lack of focus from our waiter. At the end of the evening, they really rushed us out. But, overall, I am impressed with what has happened at Mon Ami Gabi. Will I be back? Oh yes! Do I recommend it? Definitely!

They have a bar in the Bistro when you first come into the restaurant with some tables, and you walk past the elevator that takes you up to the further reception area. They have a stunning outdoor garden space that they filled with chairs and tables and accommodated a wedding ceremony (approximately 50 guests). The reception was upstairs on the second floor and it was a bit of a cluster having 50 people trying to get up to the second half of the event. The food was absolutely something to write home about! We had a menu to pick for two choices of first course, main course and 4 dessert options. I got the Maryland Crab Flan, Beef Tenderloin with crispy Brussel sprouts and fried risotto ball, and the Lemon Torte and I can honestly say, I thoroughly enjoyed every, single, bite. Perfectly seasoned, large portion of tenderloin, and mouth watering lemon torte that had a perfect balance of tart and sweet. The seafood flan was something I will be going back for with a glass of white wine. All in all the afternoon was beautiful and the wedding was great.

I've read many of the reviews, and many of the negative reviews, in my mind, are unfair because it seems the reviewer didn't know what they were getting when they went. It is expensive, it is French, and the chef makes every dish himself. So yes, the service can be slow and the dishes (particularly the specials) are very expensive. But everything I have had there -- the Branzino, the lobster purses, the bread, the steak -- have all been outstanding except the apple tart which I frankly don't like that much (but that's just a personal taste thing -- I prefer more crust and a sweeter dessert). The staff there is great -- many have been there for years -- BUT the service IS slow (see above, chef making every dish himself) and can be epically slow, hence my deduction of a star. If you're looking for a long, leisurely, special, French dinner -- this is the place for you. If you're looking for a different experience, don't go and don't complain when you get the experience you were looking for.

My wife and I found this place and we're happy to report that we had a pretty good experience. First off, they served warm and fresh French bread. While I wish they served the bread with room temperature butter, the warm bread made the cold butter easier to manage. My wife started with the seafood crepe. It could have used more crabmeat, but it was still tasty and well-prepared. For her main, she had the bouillabaisse. Again, well-prepared with good flavor. The only oddity was that it came with a piece of bread with a spicy chipotle sauce on it. We didn't think it paired well with the bouillabaisse. I had the 3 course prix fixe special. I unfortunately cannot recall what I had for my appetizer. Despite not remembering what it was, there were no issues. For my main, I had the cassoulet which came with a duck leg confit. The only comment on this is that they did not incorporate the duck leg into the cassoulet - it as prepared separately and placed on top of the cassoulet. That said, both parts are were executed. The duck was tasty and flavorful with the meat easily separating and coming off the bone. The cassoulet itself was full of flavor coming from the thick piece of bacon. For dessert, I chose the banana and chocolate crepe which my wife and I shared. Service was attentive throughout our dinner. The place is decently sized, but not noisy. I tried a fried rice and was irritated that there was a no egg option but not a no broccoli option (not a Chinese vegetable mind you), which left me with little more than a colored rice to pick through. The tofu with hot peppers hit a nice heat but not the best rendition of this dish I've had in terms of flavor complexity. The best thing I got was a dan dan noodle dish with some vicious sauce and little tofu bites. Overall though, scant portions for the money, and not quite the experience I was hoping for.
