Was visiting my friend in Glover Park and we were so excited to pop into Bonjon Rumi for a little appetizer. We got the Mantu, an Afghan dumpling with meat, yogurt, and lentils on top. These were delectable! The lentils reminded me of Indian chana dal - very savory and full of flavor. The service was speedy! The restaurant gets pretty crowded, but the food comes out hot and fresh. The ambiance is beautiful - lots of mood lighting/individual lamps at each table with some cultural elements. I cannot wait to come back and try their rice dishes! I say 'everything I received' because I didn't receive my drinks -- but the food was all great! The Chickpeas were well-cooked and flavourful, bathed in a tasty red sauce, the Buranee Bademjan eggplant was nice and soft plus super-tasty, and the salata added a nice crunch -- I ate mine along with the chickpeas, mixing some of each in my spoon, bite-by-bite. I do feel the salata was rather small for the price, and feel you -- the customer -- should know none these dishes do not come with rice or bread. It would be nice, I think, if this fact were written in the descriptions -- but apparently, those are AI-generated, or at least the one for the Chutney Sabz is, and it's definitely not what you get! The description says you get four things, but you only get one. Maybe I should've known that from the price, but I only figured it out later, after I'd gotten it. It wasn't clear to me, because I saw both names and photos of four different things and they all sounded so good! It was still rather perfect. It was nice to not have leftovers, too! Came here today on my lunch break. It's right up the street so an easy walk from me. It was pretty empty when I arrived, and I opted to sit at the bar. They have a variety of options on the menu, although I do wish they had a lunch menu because I didn't necessarily want an entree for lunch. The price point is decent for dinner prices, but not necessarily for lunch. I ordered the lamb kabob which came with a side of rice and salad. The lamb was very well cooked and tender. I did wish it was a bit more seasoned, but it did come with two condiments. One was cilantro based in oil and the other was more of a ranch. The rice had golden raisins in it, so it had that savory and sweet taste and the salad was fresh. I think I'll definitely come back again for lunch. read more

I recently visited Bonjon Rumi and had a very disappointing experience. The service was extremely slow from start to finish. It took far too long for anyone to take our order, and even longer for the food to arrive. The staff seemed inattentive and unprofessional throughout the entire visit. Unfortunately, the food was just as disappointing as the service. The dishes arrived cold, lacked flavor, and did not seem fresh at all. For the prices they charge, I expected much better quality. What made the experience even worse was hearing some of the servers speaking negatively in Farsi about customers while working. Even if they assumed people around them would not understand, it created a very uncomfortable and disrespectful atmosphere. Overall, the combination of poor service, long wait times, bad food, and unprofessional behavior made this a place I would not recommend. read more

Some of the highlights include: * Mix Maza of spreads including hummus, baba ghanoush, barta, and mast-u khiar - all flavorful and served with copious portions of fresh warm pita bread * Mantu - the dumplings filled with beef were really delicious - it is nice to see this cultural staple done so well * Kabuli Palaw - the rice in this dish is so buttery and fragrant, and the lamb is cooked to perfection * Chainaki - a unique dish that is served with a warm and comforting broth. I liked how different this was from anything I've had before * Lamb kabob - the meat came out nicely cooked, and was marinated in a lot of delicious spices * Desserts - halwa sooji and sheerbrenj - both were tasty and not overly sweet My group's only qualm was that the serving sizes are overly generous on the rice / sides and less so on the main proteins / meats. Unbelievable food arrived on my table--my table in a charming setting and decor with the chefs visible behind a counter focused on their work. I've been back with my children, back with my close friend, back with a visiting relative, and back for the platter of mixed appetizers to take home for my own soirees. It's a #1 place to eat for authentic dishes made with love for ingredients that include herbs and a mix of flavors that taste divine. Well, the name is just the beginning because the food is absolutely incredible! If you haven't been yet, do yourself a favor and go. Here's what we ordered, and let me tell you--every single dish was a hit. The Mantu dumplings were delicate and flavorful, the Kabuli Palaw was perfectly spiced and aromatic, and the Lamb Karahi was rich, tender, and packed with bold flavors. We went for dinner once and we don't plan to do it again. The Kabuli Palaw is $35 for a tiny portion of lamb on a mound of rice. The kabob was clearly not made with quality meat. Even though the restaurant was empty, our server was nowhere to be found and we went without water for quite a while. The food was forgettable and overpriced. A great new addition to Wisconsin Ave! Visited on a Sunday for brunch. First and foremost, the menu is extensive and has something for everyone! My sister is vegetarian and usually just gets dips at Afghani restaurants, but there were plenty of vegetarian entrees for her and they were delicious and cheap ($9!!!) Our group started off with the cold mezze platter, which set us off on the right foot w hummus, baba ganoush, barta, and mast-u khair. We then got the sabzi, buranee bademjan, qorma chalaw, and morgh karahi for our mains. All of the dishes were delicious and we had plenty of food with enough for leftovers too! Came here on a random Sunday for lunch. We sat down right away. The place is really cute with a greenery wall. It looks like it's a two level place, could be wrong about that. The staff is friendly and service was great. The food was good, but I wasn't a fan of most of the dishes we got. The food was fresh but something felt like it was missing. I should also mention I am Afghan do it could be a regional thing, where different regions spice their food differently from other regions. The aushak wasn't bland for me and I'm not used to eating it fried. It tasted fresh. The sambosa, the filling was great but it was in the same breading as the aushak which I felt took away from it hitting the mark for me. I'm used to having it in a much more flaky phyllo. Minus that it was how I always like them. I should also mention I can't do sour yogurt, just doesn't taste good to me. It seems like they use sour yogurt in a lot of them dishes. I'm used to plain yogurt with garlic. We got this stew dish which for me was bland as well. The lamb was very soft and melt in your mouth which I liked. Overall, the food is fresh and is good, it's just my personal preference that didn't allow me to love it, which is not the restaurant's fault, it's me not them. I went last night with some girlfriends and we're all SO excited to welcome this restaurant to our neighborhood. The ambiance was lovely, the wine was delicious and very reasonable ($28/bottle?!), the service was perfection (frequently refilling water, checking in but not rushing us since my friends and I had a lot to catch up on), and most importantly, the food was DELICIOUS. I need to try everything on the menu now. We started with the Baba Ganoush and the Mantu dumplings. OMG - the dumplings are the best thing I've eaten in a long time. For my main course, I ordered the Kofta Chalaw - slow-cooked beef meatballs in a rich tomato gravy served with rice. I ate too many dumplings so I brought half of this dish home and it was just as delicious the next day. A couple of my friends ordered vegetarian items, which were delicious and flavorful and only $9. We probably should have ordered a bunch of items to share. I can't wait to come back on a date night with my husband and/or to try brunch. read more

Our reservation was a bit early in the evening & the place was empty so we didn't know what to expect. (It did fill up as the night went on). There were 5 of us & we ordered for family style. Our server was very good & had a great sense of humor. The food was delicious; we had the dumplings, meatballs, lamb & chicken. Everything was very tasty, highly recommend. Unfortunately we had terrible service, no one was tending to our table for long periods at a time or even looking in our direction. The restaurant wasn't busy so it seemed very odd. I also felt that the ambiance was a bit lackluster, it seemed half done. The food was fine, but it was nothing special/memorable.
