My boyfriend took me here for a celebratory dinner and it was special from beginning to end. The service was wonderful and each course was amazing. We did the seven course tasting menu. The menu was custom specialized for the occasion as "Congratulations Connie!" Was printed across the menu!!! Such a delightful surprise! First off, all three of the dishes that stood out to me from the regular menu appeared magically in our tasting menu! I was so happy! Started with an amuse Bouche that was an oyster with caviar and a watermelon purée. Perfect to start. I must say the timing of the courses was perfect! Staff did a wonderful job with that! First course was the sashimi duo, toro and opah which were fresh! I didn't even need to sriracha aioli. Second was one of my favorites! Grilled prosciutto wrapped figs with black pepper honey and burrata. So if restaurants have some modification of this dish I always order it (and I also make my own at home) but I must say this was my favorite ever! The grilled smokey flavor was amazing and the burrata was perfectly creamy.... Ugh amazing!!!!!! Another highlight was the squid ink spaghetti with uni butter. It tasted of the ocean... So much seafood flavor I loved it! I Savored each bite. The soft shell crab was also a pleasant surprise because I'm usually not a fan but there was so much crab meat! Wonderful combination with the corn purée and beans. Now the meal would've been a perfect 5 if it wasn't for the dessert:/ loved the custom "congratulations!" And it was beautiful but just way too sweet and not enjoyable. The least sweet of the trio was the goat cheese cheesecake with peach compote but overall a little too sweet for my taste. Overall, amazing service, amazing food, and probably one of the best meals I have had in DC! Had lunch on a weekday and had a pleasant experience. It wasn't busy at all and we were seated very quickly. Our server was wonderful and made sure we were satisfied with everything. I've been coming to BlackSalt for several years now, but I'm only now getting around to a review. I've had lunch and dinner in the main dining area but, quite frankly, I enjoy the vibe and offerings at the bar during happy hour. The staff are hardworking and friendly. Now, for the food. Fresh! Flavorful! So good it will make you keep coming back. My usual and top picks are oysters, Texas shrimp cocktail, and crab cakes for starters. Then the burger or mussels for my main course. The wine options for happy hour are quite good. They used to have Marques de Riscal; they've since switched over to Macedonian wines that are pretty decent. On our recent visit a couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to look closer at their library of wines and was pleased to see a good inventory of Burgundy wines. Oh, and if you're a first-timer, they have a wet market right as you enter the restaurant. I am always fascinated by the variety of seafoods they carry. Love this place! read more

My friend and I visited the restaurant Saturday for lunch, unfortunately we encountered the most rude waitress I've ever met. The waitress not only did not want to serve us, it appeared she went out of her way to avoid us. She seemed disturbed to answer our basic questions about the lunch menu. The manager of course politely apologized for our treatment and requested that we stay and have something. How could I eat there after all this?? Would you?? The waitress sarcastically laughed at us as we explained our issues. Ironically I have eaten here at least nine times for dinner spending hundreds of dollars. Blacksalt is a 10 min ride from downtown DC in a sleepy neighborhood. The food was definitely worth the trip and the flavors will wake you up! Upon entering you will see why they call this place a market as they fresh catch of the day for sale. Naturally we ordered a crap load of seafood. Here's the rundown: Fried clams - lightly breaded and cooked perfectly to retain the juicy texture, grilled BBQ octopus, scallop sashimi - this was only OK, oyster Rockefeller - the only way I will eat oysters which rounds out the apps. For entrees we feasted on bouillabaisse mussels and monkfish, soft shell crab - amazing chef preparation, jumbo prawn stew w rice noodles and mussels, and I had the Norwegian cod - perfectly cooked juicy inside and beautifully charred crispy outside in heavenly corn chowder w surprise Lima beans!! Everything was really good - with the fried oysters taking top honors for being super amazing. For dessert we had the Trio of creme brûlée, strawberry shortcake. Tasty goodness! read more

BlackSalt is a fantastic restaurant with one of the best salmon I've had in a while. I just wish their portion sizes were a little bigger for the price we paid. The ambiance of the restaurant is also top notch. When you walk in the fish market is right in the front (can be a little stinky) but on the other side of that is the beautiful sit down portion of the restaurant. Unfortunately sitting down isn't really an option right now. The great thing is they do offer takeout from noon to 7pm and have delivery options through door dash and uber eats which is very convenient. I really hope BlackSalt survives this time of uncertainty so that we can all come out and enjoy a nice sit down meal when this is over. In the mean time thank God for takeout!! read more

3.5 stars. In the Pailsades area, there are only a couple of decent lunch places and Black Salt is one of them. The place is a mix of a seafood store for local residents and a bar/restaurant at the back. The main idea is that you can order seafood from the shop and the kitchen will cook it however you like. There is also a regular menu if you dont want to do that task. Overall I like the lunch prix fixe. It's quick and easy and has a decent set of options. If you wanna go for a la carte then I would suggest the house made pasta or the oyster po boy. If you are there for early dinner then the oysters are kinda of a deal for the area. For dinner, I've been a few times but I've been a bit overwhelmed. There are more options around and closer to the heart of town. If you have a choice between bar and table, I am a bit biased towards the bar. There is a small tv you can watch amd the bartenders are nice (they do however keep on changing a bit. I guess turnover is high but on average they're pretty great people to chat with). read more

A true neighborhood restaurant tucked away in the palisades, which means nonprofit and political sphere power couples, mature families, and the odd date or two. There is a small store in front (we got some cookies which weren't very good) and a bar with oysters displayed. Seafood is the main event here, but unfortunately so too is bacon. Almost all dishes had some sort of pork (bacon, pork belly, pancetta...). I had the tuna which was missing salt or some richness. My wife had the branzino which was very good. Gnocchi with scallops was also good. Scallops were fresh and gnocchi had a nice crispness. We came here for restaurant week after reading such positive reviews and I mean, you can't beat a 3 course lunch for $22. First of all - this must be THE freshest seafood I've had in over 5 years. Lets break down dishes below -- Oysters: We ordered the 1/2dz premium which gave us a mix from Maine, Virginia & NC. They were perfect, extremely fresh and delicious. Calamari: Perfectly cooked (not chewy at all), well seasoned light batter, home made remoulade and a greatly portioned. Tuna steak: Perfectly seared with an amazing light pink center, well seasoned, great cut size. Seafood stew: 2 people in our party got this and just could not get enough of it. Key line pie: Ridiculous. I Neverrrrr gravitate towards key lime pie because it's not my kind of dessert but wow. Perfectly sweet, yet tart with a great finish. Service: It reminded me of the level of service I get in Europe. Our server Traci was attentive and not over bearing. She would check in periodically, make sure we were always topped off and would go about her business. Our lunch turned into a 3 hour, 5 star dining experience. Do not go into this restaurant if it's a busy night. You will be very disappointed. My boyfriend and I made that mistake-- I swore by this place up countless times, so it was clearly my fault. We got oysters. They were fresh and tasted like pure ocean--salty and a little rusty. Just like we liked them. We also got the Atlantic Scallop appetizer. It was made with peas and sun-dried tomatoes over a butter lemon sauce with micro greens on top. The scallops were also delicious. And then our entrees came... I got the Snapper over truffled mashed potatoes and asparagus. My boyfriend got the Halibut with raspberry marinated veggies. "Oh my God these look so good." I said. My boyfriend took the first bite. "Meh." Utter disappointment. I took a bite of my snapper. It didn't taste like anything. The fish was fresh and crispy, but it was missing salt, pepper, a little bit of something. "Please tell me yours is better." My boyfriend said. "Meh," I shrugged. "Doesn't have any taste."  I've got to admit that the truffled mashed potatoes and asparagus did make up the mediocre fish, but I was still disappointed. The service here is impeccable and Joo, the sommelier is extraordinary. They deserve 5 star. The food was good, but I didn't fall in love with anything other than the desserts. We started off with the salmon tartare. It says that it comes on sushi rice-- it's not really sushi rice... We also had 2 other starters, one which my friend ordered and I don't know what it is right now, and I believe the other was complimentary. These were all average dishes. I think we chose to go with the Addie's mussels after that, which were pretty delicious. Use the bread to dip in the sauce. Then for my entree, I ordered the crab cakes. They were very large and full of crab meat, not much filler. The kale and the potato salad were a nice touch to compliment the crab cakes. I want to say my friend ordered the wood grilled whole fish but I'm not 100% positive. My entree was definitely the better of the two. We were given some kind of meat pasta with an egg on the house. I've never thought about matching these two before, but it was actually a great combination! Maybe the best dish of the night. We ended the night with the sorbet and the tiramisu. Wow! Our first time here, having dined at 2 other Black Salt group restaurants. This flagship location was by far the best! We were here to celebrate a birthday, and the entire experience was fantastic from the moment we arrived. We were seated in a booth which was ideal to allow for ease of conversation without feeling like we were having to raise our voices. Though the noise level was low last night. The oysters were delicious! However I definitely want to try some of their caviar on our next visit. They have an extensive selection. Our waiter was nice and attentive, and and offered some great suggestions, all of which were spot on! Our entrees were perfectly prepared and outstanding. As were the cocktails and desserts. We hadn't been here since before the pandemic. The food is still excellent but grossly overpriced, especially given the mediocre ambience and service. What really got me was the 4% "card processing fee" (also applicable to debit cards). The server claimed it was a "new DC law" and the manager more honesty said that they could have just raised the prices by 4%. Slightly salteed and charred on the sides - which is a perfect little crunch as you bite into the pieces! It came with two seasoned crostinis and it was perfect to share. Entrees, we had the fish tacos and the House pasta. House pasta was dressed in a very light and super tasty arugula pesto, tagliatelle and topped with grill rock fish. I love love loved this pasta dish. VERY LIGHT and the flavor was one of a kind. I have never had an arugula pesto, so I did not know what to expect. I really loved that the pasta dish did not have any parmesan or cheese in it. It truly was delicious,light and very delicious! I also loved the fresh fish tacos. Fried with cornmeal and the avocado and slaw was very tasty.I particularly loved the char grilled corn tortillas. This dish was great!!! I have been here a few times before but last evening had an amazing experience this past Sunday evening. All of the staff from when you enter at the host stand was extremely polite. Our waiter Greg was awesome. He was so knowledgeable regarding the food options. The oysters were delicious as were both of our entree options of Branzino and scallops. They had churros paired with Mexican hot chocolate ice cream as dessert that night. It's been a long time since I have been somewhere and felt so satisfied with both food and service. I was looking for a good happy hour spot that served oyster Rockefeller, so I googled it and BlackSalt was the first result returned. What a great find! My boyfriend ordered their seasonal cider with whiskey (warm) and I got a drink with dark rum and ginger beer (I forget the name). We also ordered their seafood stew, fish and chips and of course the Rockefeller. Everything was 5/5! The ginger beer was house made and tasted smooth but had bite. My boyfriend enjoyed his warm fall drink. The seafood stew was loaded with fish, shrimp and squid and had a saffron tomato broth. The fish was crispy and light and came with house made chips. It really is as good as all the other yelpers have stated. We were staying in downtown DC and came out to Georgetown because of all the great reviews. We had just finished our tour of the Jefferson Memorial in the cab ride from there it was about $14. Very easy. Really mellow little neighborhood and the restaurant looks very deceiving from the street because the front is quite small. When you walk in you can see the market portion where they're selling lots of fresh oysters and fish and other seafood. Of course soft shell crabs and Maryland crab. They attempted to seat us back in the main dining room but the tables were pretty close together and it was quite a ruckus crowd. We said we would be happy to set up in a bar and we're seated in a nice booth across from the barstools. There's about five of them and I think those are the best seats in the house. You can see the kitchen, you can see the TV in the bar, and you can see the market. My wife had a cosmopolitan, all the juice was fresh squeezed. I had a ram old fashion and had a second cocktail called Dr.'s orders. It was a Play on a Manhattan. Both cocktails were very creative and very very good. A Beautiful assorted breast basket was present at first with high-end olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We had octopus sautéed in uni butter and seared scallops in a sesame tamari sauce. We also had a half dozen assorted oysters & A pasta dish with lobster and smashed peas. Everything terrific. That is her list was also very creative and we had a pot of butterscotch cream with a sort of Oreo cookie crust on the bottom. Heaven. I came for the resturant week deal. The options are actually much better than the menu listed online. The neighbourhood is definetely affluent and is a beatiful drive over. Street parking was easy to find for our Saturday lunch. I was welcomed by the fish counter. It adds a relax and cool vibe to the place. It was packed probably due to the resturant week deal. But the interior was decorately beautifully. There were a lot of wood. Although it is somewhat deep and dark, the place remains airy. I feel it was trendy and relaxing, not pretentious. As for the food, it seems all the dishes were a little blurry. The mussle appitizer was the only memorial item, it seems. They are not bad, by any means, but a little boring. Even the desserts were not noteworthy. The waiter was definitely very busy. But I felt he was quite friendly and attentive. Maybe the resturant week menu item does not do this place justice. We went tonight for my husband's birthday and everything was wonderful! The food was excellent... well paced, not rushed. The service was incredible! I can't recall our waitress's name but I was super impressed with her command of the (quite elaborate) menu and all of her recommendations were spot on! They brought over a lovely treat for my husband for dessert... which was unexpected and very nice. Don't miss the butterscotch and peanut butter desserts. I went the BlackSalt for lunch during Restaurant Week. The food was good. There was one problem that I encountered. I wanted to order a salad that had onions listed as ingredients - I asked the server if I could get it without onions and she said yes. But when the salad was brought to me (by another person) it clearly had onion slivers all throughout. I mentioned that I had specifically asked for "no onions." This second person took it away, but soon came back with the same salad - He said, "this doesn't have onions on it." I started to point out the onions I could see, but said - those are radishes and then hurried away. They were clearly NOT radishes, but onion slivers. So I did my best to pick out the onion slivers from the salad - I wound up with about a teaspoon or two of onions on the plate. I was unhappy with the deception and invalidation. read more

Went with family (10 total) to celebrate my birthday. Calamari, fried oysters were good , also great atmosphere. Our waiter was very nice and professional. We ordered 1/2 doz of raw oysters. Most of the raw oysters were pretty much the size of a quarter! My ribeye steak was good, with the ribeye you get a teaspoon of potatoes and green beans. My wife ordered the seafood stew...1 shrimp, 1 scallop and very little pasta. The portions here are way too small!! I did bring in my own cake. Upon arrival, we gave the cake to the waiter. When we were ready for the cake, the waiter put it on the table for us with a knife and plates. My wife cut 1 slice and the waiter says, his manager said they have to take the cake back and they will cut/serve the cake and it would be a additional $36 charge. Really? We just spent over $1,000 with tip and you want to charge me for cutting my cake?This was my second time dining here. I have a hand full of restaurants that never disappoint. I'll stick to those! You have to run and not walk to this restaurant. I have found my favorite seafood restaurant in DC! I enjoyed an exceptional lunch. The sommelier Kristin, the bartender, and host were all very welcoming (as were all the staff)! I am already looking forward to my next visit. This is clearly a spot for locals and lovers of good food. I enjoyed a few appetizers, a dessert, and a wine pairing with each. They oysters are the best in DC. BlackSalt Fish Market & Restaurant is a seafood restaurant off of MacArthur. Part of the Black Restaurant Group, the place offers brunch/lunch/dinner/and a HH menu. A group of us came here for dinner, and we started off with the following: Butter Poached Lobster (celeriac-porcini puree, wild mushrooms, spaghetti squash, burssels sprouts, and lobster with sherry butter; the lobster was tender and I liked the drawn butter that came with it); Wood Grilled Mediterranean Sardines (with olive aioli, grilled bread, charred lemon, and salmoriglio; I'm a fan of sardines, but this just had an off taste to them; maybe to be left on the wood grill a bit longer?); and, an order of the Thai mussels (with chiles, coconut milk, and lemongrass; the broth was a little watered down and thin for me; I was hoping the broth was a bit thicker to scoop it with some bread). For our entrees, we ordered the Skuna Bay Salmon (with herb spaetzle, walnuts, dried fruits, roasted apples, bacon-brasied red cabbage, and a mustard vin blanc; this was more of a sweeter dish with the dried fruits); BlackSalt Crab Cakes (with house bacon, local greens, warm fingerling potato salad, and leek cream; these were more on the bland side); Bouillabaisse (head-on shrimp, monkfish, oysters, blue shell mussels, and sea scallops all in a fennel-pernod broth, topped with some rouille croutons; we thought the broth was a bit too strong on the fennel taste); and, a Wood Grilled Whole Branzino (with artichoke puree, flageolet, sultanas, olives, escarole, brussels sprouts, preserved lemon, and ladolemono; a very simple dish with the fish being main focus). For dessert, I had to get the Pumpkin Streusel Pie (with the ginger-mascarpone ice cream, oat tuile, and caramel sauce); my friends ordered the Key Lime Pie (with blueberry compote, whipped cream, and sesame seed tuile); the Banana Coconut Cream Pie (with thyme honey roasted pineapple and chocolate sauce; this was my preferred one out all of the desserts); and, the Butterscotch Pot de Creme (with scot-vanilla milkshake, almond brittle, milk chocolate, and butter shortbread). Service was a hit-or-miss, as we waited quite some time for the rest of our appetizers to arrive; also, we had a hard time trying to flag down our server for drink refills. My girlfriend and I dined here tonight on a whim. There are three things that made the night beautiful. First, there was plenty of free on-street parking for a Saturday evening! I often find that I get stressed/lost trying to navigate the city. This location is perfect for someone like me, who enjoys hassle-free parking. Second, the fresh fish market in the front is very cool. Seeing all of the fresh fish added to my perception that we would get stellar service. Behind the fresh fish display are the bar and dining room. Third, our waitress (Lisa) was very helpful in helping us determine the best dishes and drinks to purchase. When my friend and I bit into the halibut, we both let out a soft "mmmm," but she continued the sound effects throughout her second and third bites. That's how good it was! It's certainly not the hippest place in town and the crowd reflects the neighborhood, but the food is good and the service is pretty dialed in - I personally prefer to sit at the bar and have had very good experiences there. The restaurant is not inexpensive (seafood costs money) and if you're not careful you can really run up a tab, but I've never felt that the meal wasn't worth it. read more

Food was AMAZING! I had the scallops and my bf had clam chowder and they put real clams in the soup! Yummy!! She said it was the best clam chowder ever! Service was stellar!
