The Black Walnut bar located in the Hilton hotel is beautiful with a warm modern decor. The bar staff AZ, Tor and Marcelle is extremely knowledgeable very friendly and full of complements. You can sit at the bar watch the game order an amazing burger, pretzel or killer wings. I have been staying at the Hilton now for 2mos due to repairs being done on my apartment. I was staying at the Hilton in Brooklyn over the weekend and had a chance to dine on bar bites and drinks at the bar, as well as room service by Black Walnut. The drinks at the bar were good, nothing super craft-cocktail, but good drinks. For bites we got Charred Brussel Sprouts-- Slivered almonds, lemon and cranberries) and the Crispy Smashed Potato Skins-- Smashed red bliss, sage, Parmesan and zesty ranch). Both were really good bar food and we finished them (I even used some of the Brussel Sprouts to grab the last of the ranch!). Having had a good experience with light bites at the bar, I ordered from BW for room service (they service the Hilton where they're located). I got a few smaller dishes for lunch, which ended up totaling over $50 with tip. Here's what I got: - (HARD PASS- SEE PICS) Arugula Salad-- Described on the menu as consisting of Aged ricotta and crispy chickpeas to top. This was the most underwhelming salad I've gotten in a while. It was a small heap of arugula, coated in some extremely salty oil, with what looked like shaved parmesan and some fried chickpeas (that were not crispy because of the dressing). I called because I thought there was a mistake- having expected a heap of creamy ricotta. I told them I wanted to send it back and after talking to the kitchen, the gentleman told me that was the aged ricotta. I told him I've never seen ricotta like that and that they should specify it on the menu because that was not at all what one would expect when hoping for "aged ricotta." And for $12, this was a real let-down. They didn't take it back. - (HARD PASS- SEE PICS) Braised Pork Bao Bun-- Described as Crispy buns, Korean chili, sesame, carrots, pickled daikon. SIGH. At $4/bun I was really excited for something special. What I got instead were two heavily fried bao buns with a sliver of filling. I took one bite and oil was literally dripping down my chin and fingers from the friend buns. I ended up opening them and scooping one bite of filling out of each. That was an expensive two bites- even for NYC! I just don't know why they would fry these delicate buns. All they do is soak in all of the oil. Eek... - (WOULD ORDER AGAIN) Artichoke Hummus with grilled naan bread and fire roasted vegetables. This was the only dish I enjoyed, but I was so annoyed and grossed out by the other dishes (particularly the oil-filled bite of bao) that I left most of it. Still, if I had to order anything again, I'd order this. With one good food experience and one terrible food experience, I think a three star review is warranted. We were looking for a place for dinner after shopping and decided to give this restaurant a try. The full restaurant was not open at the time when we inquired at the hotel reception (restaurant is inside the hotel) but we could order from the bar area. We ordered the salmon with mashed sweet potatoes and black lentils, as well as the turkey burger melt. The food was average and the service was fine. For me the best part of my meal was the cold Brooklyn lager. read more

There are so many amazing places to eat in NYC, but we dined here out of convenience hoping that it would be better than your average hotel restaurant. It was not. The food was edible, and the service a bit slow, but nothing really to complain about. The only reason to eat here is if your staying in the hotel, waiting for your room to be ready, waiting for some friends to arrive who are also staying at the hotel and starving because you haven't eaten since you started traveling to get to the hotel. I do have to say that the fried broccoli and mushrooms was interesting. I liked it, but thewas mixed reviews amongst my group. Rob Newton's new restaurant is completely unrecognizable from everything else he's done so far, from the decor to the service to the food. It's located in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Brooklyn, so it feels like a hotel restaurant, and while it is nice and has an upscale vibe, it is a 180 from his fun, casual spots. The biggest issue was with the service, and while it was just the first night, the issues were pretty inexplicable. The restaurant was nearly empty when we ordered at around 7, and we were there for 2 hours. We started with the 18 Month Aged Tennessee Ham with Japanese Milk Bread, Pickled Okra and Butter ($16). I was extremely sad when I realized that the "Milk Bread" is the exact same thing they give you as the complimentary bread to start. So after we got the complimentary bread and the House Flatbread ($14), 20 minutes later we got that same exact bread with a few slices of ham and pickles. Moving on, we then had the Braised Tofu Skins ($18), which were fine, and then noticed the table of 4 near us getting our entrees. The waitress asked if we wanted dessert, so they clearly forgot our burger, and rushed it in. The Dry Aged Burger ($23) happened to be excellent, but for the last issue, they brought it without the Steak Fries, which they said would be right out, but ended up arriving several minutes after we finished the burger. Finally, the desserts were pretty solid. We tried the Vanilla Cheesecake ($10), which was super creamy and nice and sweet, and the Chocolate Pretzel Torte ($10), which wasn't as good as the Pretzel Ice Cream it came with. Maybe breakfast is better, as the menu seems to have a number of sandwiches that sound great. I might return to try those. But I'd probably rather go to Wilma Jean next time I'm in this area of Brooklyn. read more

I was here for brunch today with several friends and honestly it was the most enjoyable brunch I've had recently. The service was good - and they didn't chase us out. We were there for a good three hours catching up. The ambiance is lovely and it wasn't crowded which made our group brunch a leisurely one. I had one of the best smoked salmon platters I've had. The bagel was ok but the lox itself was delicious. I also had a side of grits that was serviceable but improved with some salt. With some cheese it would have been really good. The dessert was delicious. Warm cranberry apple mini pie with real vanilla ice cream. A really nice finale to a great meal. If I'm in the area again I would definitely go back. read more

Came here for brunch with my boyfriend one random weekend. It wasn't too packed. The food was pretty tasty. We came with a PulsD voucher for unlimited mimosas. Mimosas are mimosas-not much to screw up there but the food was good. I ordered the country sausage dish and my boyfriend got the chicken and corn Jalepeno waffles which weren't bad as I thought they were going to be. All in all. Our dinner here was dang good! We live nearby and were a bit unsure given the place is new and has had mixed reviews thus far - but we are SO glad we decided to try it for ourselves. The food was fantastic - fresh, tasty, and well seasoned. We had the roasted carrots & asparagus appetizer, the Po Boy sandwich, and the cheeseburger. All perfectly cooked and yummy. But to start, they brought out warm bread with warm butter, and this was a huge plus in our book; it's the way bread and butter should be served, and not nearly enough of the higher-end restaurants serve it this way. The dessert was to die for; pie from the local (and award-winning) Four and Twenty Blackbirds. We barely had room in our bellies but this treat is not one to miss. Very attentive service from our server Johan and the rest of the staff. And the ambience was a relaxed elegant. This lovely place will very soon be discovered by the neighborhood foodies who aren't daunted by hotel restaurants (it is tucked within the Hilton Downtown Brooklyn); those who are will be missing out. read more

Chef Rob Newton has opened a few solid Brooklyn eateries including Nightingale Nine and Wilma Jean, two spots I totally dig. Black Walnut, the new restaurant in the Hilton Hotel on Schermerhorn, seemed like a great opportunity to expand the brand, but a little out of character. Turns out Newton brings a similar sensibility to the space along with a few hidden charms. Like his other restaurants, there's a minimalism on display that lets the flavors do the talking. At Wilma Jean you're gonna get some good fried chicken. At Nightingale Nine, some competent Vietnamese. Here, catering to not just the restaurant itself, but also to room service, Newton balances on that fine line between pushing the envelope and playing it safe. Thankfully, he hits the sweet spot. Whether Black Walnut is considered a financial success remains to be seen. The hood is still showing signs of adolescent gentrification. There are cranes aplenty, with new apartments and establishments popping up for blocks around. Is it enough to keep this spot afloat? I sure hope so. For starters, get some signage out front. Had I not been tuned into social media, or sites like Grubstreet and Eater, I would have never known about it. So, off the bat, the cocktails were super delicious. Always a good sign. We had a couple of Wilma Jeans (rittenhouse rye, koval honey liqueur, fennel, lemon, bitters ) and more than a few magically smokey Dopplegangers (nuestra soledad san luis del rio mezcal, cynar, brennavin aquavit). We started with some smaller plates, the high-point of which was a surprising chicken liver mousse with caramelized cocoa nibs, pickles, and perfectly grilled bread. The flavors really shined through. It was bright and creamy and now I want it again. The flatbread with roasted mushrooms, kabocha squash, mint, and parsley was also good, but maybe could have been crispier. A little bit. But the flavors were spot on and there was a lightness to it you don't normally get from flatbread. We also shared the dry aged burger on a butter toasted house bun with some hearty steak fries. Different enough from the solid burgers at Wilma Jean, with an aged funk that stole the show. The inclusion of pickled okra was a perfect pairing, indicative of the chef's ability to be twist expectations in subtle, thoughtful ways. The pan roasted fluke, with unctuous chanterelles, parsley root purée, crosnes, and pickled spruce tips was light and tasty, if a wee small. That it left us wanting more is probably a good sign. I read positive things about the aged Tennessee ham and the grilled shishitos, but we were stuffed by the end of the meal. That Chocolate Pretzel Torte will have to wait until next time. Definitely another plus on the Brooklyn food scene. read more

What a welcome addition to the neighborhood! I tried dinner at Black Walnut this weekend and was thoroughly impressed by the experience: The food was inventive but comfortable, and everything we ate - the bread course, flatbread and ham appetizers, fish main course, and two house-made desserts - surpassed my expectations. The cocktails were also perfect - well conceived and executed. The room itself is also really nicely designed, handsome and cozy. It's too bad you have to access it through the Hilton lobby, and perhaps that's why so few people seem to know about Black Walnut. There's not even a sign for it on the building, that I can see, but hopefully it will soon get the recognition it deserves. Overall, a strong new restaurant for the neighborhood and a much-needed shot in the arm for this stretch of Schermerhorn Street. read more

We arrived after a movie and on Super Bowl Sunday. Had I not seen photographs we wouldn't have located it or we would have been hesitant to explore. We sailed past the bar with a smattering of people and into the main dining room which with it's proliferation of booths and cubbies, it felt stark and monastic. Lots of space, a greyed wood paneling, very corporate looking ( which, I guess I understand). Some nice art on the back wall, but random art on either side seemed incongruous. We sat in the corner booth with another group of three in the other far left booth, other than that, there were a completely silent two top in the middle boothes. Another couple two tables down finished their meals and left as we were ordering. The ladies in the other booth were clearly a group of Clinton campaign employees, getting together for the first time because that is all we could hear. Other than that, a faint clink of a glass and the hum of both a TV at the bar and an engine motor of some sort, it was dead. Some music would have certainly warmed the place up. Our server was delightful and sweet, very shy it seemed, the bar tender/ runner funny and peppy. With a super bowl menu, I ordered the poutine and sliders, my husband got the trout salad which looked beautiful. My poutine came first with crispy steak fries smothered in a Gouda infused sauce mornay. Really tasty after asking for some salt and ketchup. I think more Gouda could have livened it up from the start, but still yummy. I had the sliders after and was only able to finish one, buttery roll, very sharp cheddar, yum. Everyone always messes around with mild cheese but this one you could taste, I appreciated it ( oh, and some pickle). The menu is much larger than online as it includes specials and a separate bar menu. I most certainly would return, but my husband has a thing about being the last ones at the restaurant, which it seemed we were throughout the meal, so I'm sure he'd be hesitant. I do recommend they add some warmth only i'm not sure how. Candles at the top of the banquets perhaps? The lighting fixtures over the central booths look like they belong in the jewelry counter at a department store. Our pendants were pretty character- free, too so perhaps make more of a statement with those? Otherwise, it's feeling a bit 90's, masculine and stark. Gabriel, the bartender is super chill! Nice friendly conversation, in a chic, brand new Hilton in Downtown Brooklyn! I had to do a conference call, and the space beside the bar with comfy chairs & couches, was the perfect, quiet space! Hey also have tv's by the bar & lounge to keep up with sports and/or news, plus a large dining room, which looks like it can accommodate good sized groups! Although, I did not eat, I hear their food is top notch, originating from the masters of Wilma Jean & their other locations (Carroll Gardens). It has since been bought out by Hilton, but apparently holds similar standards/menu, and still has some sort of affiliation. read more

I made a reservation on Saturday night thinking it would be crowded. We were one of 3 tables at 7:00. The space is lovely, the room well lit and the staff attentive in a good way. For apps we ate the chicken liver and roasted baby carrot salad. Both were excellent. The presentation was lovely. For dinner we ate the halibut, farro with mushrooms and the steak. The only good dish was the steak at $34.00. It was tender and cooked perfectly. We did not finish the farro dish because it was as just not that good. We also had the halibut that was edible but did not taste that fresh. For dessert we ordered the pretzel cake which we did not finish either. I would love to see this restaurant succeed but there has to be an everyday burger and pasta option. In reading the reviews I feel like I was eating in a different restaurant. Given that the restaurant was not busy on a Saturday night indicates changes are needed. read more
