Been here twice now. I'm an east-sider and don't really make it this far west of Cleveland very often, but after taking a couple of group classes in Elyria over the past couple of months, a small group from our class wanted to eat somewhere other than the mundane national chain staples. The first time I found Black River Tavern, I had no idea it was set on a golf course. The restaurant itself is very casual, but elegantly casual. The food: awesome! I got a burger. The burger was great, but the fries were the highlight. Reasonable prices and friendly staff! So the next time I was out there for the class, I suggested we go again! We enjoyed it just as much. Great food! On a slow weeknight we decided to take our family out to eat. The kids had anticipated ordering pizza but the oven was not working. They ended up ordering the kids meals which enjoyed. For around $7 the portions were really great. The sandwiches come with fries (and they are delicious) or you have the option to upgrade. We tried this place out last Saturday for the Browns playoff game. We wanted to go out to see the game out but didn't want to go to a bar. We ate at the bar here which was a good option as we had it to ourselves. We ordered the onion rings as a side to share, the mushroom Swiss burger, and the club sandwich. Everything was very good. We had a few cocktails as we ate too. Made well. We ended up bringing food home for leftovers. Big dining room, nice bathroom, and virtual/simulated golfing. Solid 4.0. We had the huge portion - Lobster Roll/ Onion Rings and the 3 Chicken Tacos. The lobster roll was large and filling, needed a bit more lobster. Flavor was dulled by other ingredients. Onion rings were crispy and breaded properly. The chicken tacos were excellent. We also had the pretzels ( 3 pretzels seems a little skimpy ) the cheese dip Was excellent We wrapped up with 2 fried chicken sandwiches and their Curley steak fries. The kids loved this. Cozy during winter. Small pub feel with separated dining areas. The brunch is great!!! Saturday Prime Rib- Awesome! We have yet to have something from the menu we didn't like. Savannah is an absolute dream as a server/bartender. Tip her well! Fast service. There are also golf simulator private areas for groups and a pro shop for golfers. No color or flavor to speak of. My wife's brisket sandwich was embarrassing. Dry, thin slices. Was not even close to being a $17 sandwich. It was dead when we got there. Like no one there but us. Casey tried but food was not good. Took forever for a Moscow mule that had little booze in it and an elderflower martini that was more like a margarita. Sad thing was, it was my pick for the night. The dining are is very cozy and quiet no matter where you sit you feel a sense of privacy. We sat along the wall in the booth and later a family sat at the huge table but we couldn't hear them & it was not loud at all. Our waitress, Heather was so friendly, and attentive. We both ordered the steaks - I had Strip Steak, Mashed Potatoes and seasoned Asparagus and my guest had the Flat Iron Steak and Rosemary Truffle Fries. Both Medium Well. The food came out to order. We also ordered from the bar. I had a house Margarita w/Patron and it was absolutely delicious! We had a surprise birthday party here and everything was excellent. The table of 7 enjoyed drinks (chocolate martinis, wine spritzers), and appetizers (meatballs, pretzels). The entrees came out quickly (flatbread pizza, iron steak, lobster crusted cod, beet and arugala salad, butternut squash ravioli, chicken francaise, and a massive burger). All of the food was great, service was friendly and responsive. We look forward to the warmer months when the patio is open and we can watch the golfers on the Nicklaus Designed Golf Course. We were celebrating a family members birthday...there were 14 people, which includes 5 children. Nice place..but I think they may have been severely understaffed. Which I get is a common problem now. And I think our server was a bit overwhelmed...too much for her. She was very sweet though. Never got our ice waters, drinks took approx 20 min. Kids food was put in first, with appetizers, buy most came out with the rest of the table, that had been put in later. Took over an hour for our food. So for drinks, appetizers, and dinner....put in after each other...we were there for 3 hours. And it wasn't even busy. We were just very disappointed. Had higher expectations. I ordered the ultimate cheesesteak. One of the worst sandwiches I've ever had. The meat was grissiley, overcooked, under seasoned and fatty. 1/3 of the meat had to come out of my mouth and into my napkin. When I voiced concern to the manager her response was." that's prime rib meat and that's the way it is. Prime rib has fat." Well, thank you for the heads up. I definitely won't be ordering your prime rib either. On another note, the wife had the salmon and it was good. Flavor was good and it was cooked correctly. The waitress/bar tender was nice. (I was told the online menu wasn't correct and there was no one that could deliver the food). I golf in a weekly league here with 3 other guys & we always stay after for a couple of beers & food. I'd guess we spend about $500/month here. Throughout the summer service has been acceptable at best & many of my friends have been turned away for not having reservations even though the place is nearly empty. I understand staffing issues but it just seems counter-productive to turn business away. Anyways, I have ordered the same Signature Burger for $13 nearly every week this summer. This week, no different. Until I get the bill. I notice it's $34 & assumed my friends put their beers on my tab while I went to grab my wallet, no big deal. While finishing my beer I notice she charged me $20 for the burger & ask about it. Her response was quite rude, told me she doesn't pay attention to food prices & the burger she corrected me on the name is no longer on the menu. I get it, things change but when you give me the name of the burger, that's no longer on the menu, you would think you'd give me a heads up that it's no longer on the menu. Or, at the very least, maybe apologize for a 54% price increase on something I've ordered from you weekly all summer. Our dinner plans fell through and Yelp led us to Black River Tavern, where we were greeted by a friendly hostess who gave us a seat with a view. The Tavern is a really nice space on a beautiful golf course. The menu looked great and we were excited to try their food! I started with a huge and beautiful wedge salad. I'm not a big ranch fan, but their homemade Romano Ranch is really delicious. Excellent salad, I couldn't believe the huge portion. My husband started with a bowl of Lobster Bisque soup that may as well have been served in a sink. Huge bowl! He said it was also good. For dinner, hubby got the El Scorcho burger- nice and spicy but not overpowering. It was a drippy mess, but cooked well and very fresh. I enjoyed my Chicago Beef Sandwich too. Very messy, but great flavor. I love that they source as much as they can locally. It was a great menu. But now we have to talk about the service. We ordered iced teas and she didn't bring any sweetener. Okay, this is the kind of place where you have to ask. I asked, and she made several laps around the restaurant before I got them. I was pretty thirsty and it was frustrating to have to wait for my beverage. Our server dropped off our starters and that was the last we saw of her until the end. When she dropped off the salad I said 'oh I will probably need another dressing for this' and she never brought it, so I couldn't finish my salad. She never refilled our drinks. She never asked husband if he wanted another cocktail. She didn't make sure our salad/ soup was satisfactory. Someone else brought our food out and then nobody checked on us. Thankfully, everything on our order was correct, but I would have actually had to get up and go find someone if we needed anything else. She finally returned well after we were finished. She never asked how everything was and didn't apologize for being absent for over 30 minutes. We asked for a box and a side of dressing for my salad, as well as the check. Getting the check took quite some time and getting the box and dressing took even longer. I also heard the table behind us complaining that she never refilled their beers or stopped back. Sadly, the lovely setting, good food, and ample menu aren't enough to get us to come back. The service was so bad, our tip reflected it. We ate here today on a Sunday! They only serve Brunch on Sunday. We thought they served Lunch . But we made the best of it! I ordered French Toast with Smoked Bacon and Fried potatoes. It was disappointing . The bacon could have been cooked more and the French toast looked and tasted like it was packaged and the fried potatoes were tasteless . My husband ordered a burger and it looked good but he said it didn't have a good burger taste the fries were interesting large gut curled potatoes but I wouldn't call them fries . The others had chicken strips that had been cooked so long the chicken just about disappeared inside and you couldn't even chew them . A club sandwich was just ok. Service was ok but it took quite awhile for the food to come and it was not busy only a few tables. I can see why ! We won't be back ! Everything sounded good just wasn't . The place was very nice inside would be a nice place to have a cold beer and sit outside in the summer ! I believe there was a golf course there and they do have weddings and events there.
