First time going back since the renovation. The inside of much more open now and they added an awesome rooftop bar. The rooftop bar is certainly the place to be and it allows dogs. The service is consistent and they are very attentive. I had the Texas sausage and the brisket with two sides and piece of cornbread. The sweet tea always has a funny aftertaste and I can't quite put my finger on it. The brisket was good and I added some of their house sauce on it. The sides were good too and the beans have a nice little kick to them but aren't spicy. The inside is very open with plenty of seating and two bars total (one inside and one rooftop). Check them out if you're downtown!

My roommate and I came here after a long day of shopping. We love bbq. We got sat immediately and the staff was attentive to us. It wasn't super busy but I feel like it still would be even if it was. Though nothing will amount to my grandfathers bbq I did think the food was good. I liked the sausage and brisket that I got. My roommate for the burnt tips. They also have a variety of sauces to choose from to put on your meat. I chose the Kansas City. The energy was industrial but cute. It had a bunch of t a playing games or shows. There is also a bar. If you are GLUTEN FREE there are no gluten free buns for the sandwiches but you can just get the platter.

We were on our way to a sandwich shop when we spotted Black Hog and decided to check out their menu. It looked delicious so we switched gears and got a table. It has a nice interior feel and once you order they bring out a caddy of different house made and one store bought sauces. Being a Saturday we were recommended to try the whole hog special, only offered on Saturdays and we decided why not. While they didn't hit everything out of the park it was decent BBQ and we'd be down to come back. What we got: Whole hog (review of our choice of sides below) - 3.5* I really liked the meat (nice and moist), the slider was alright (drier meat), the dry rib wasn't amazing though I really enjoyed the rub (they accidentally gave us a wet rib and let us keep it. I thought the wet rib was better but that could be because they had their delicious kansas city sauce on it. My husband thought the flavoring on both were really good but the meat didn't fall off the bone which is his gold standard for good ribs), and the cracklings weren't my favourite but I don't like them to begin with. We were disappointed the pickle wasn't a whole pickle, just three slices. And the pickles onions were also almost a small handful but I did like them. The cornbread was really good! Arkansas brisket (add on, son1/4 lb) - 4* I enjoyed it and loved the sauce. My more intense bbq connoisseur husband thought it was a bit overcooked and relied too much on the sauce for flavor Sides: Brown sugar sweet potato - 3.5* my favourite part was drinking down the leftover sugar juices. The sweet potato were nice and soft and I enjoyed the flavour. Coleslaw - 3* nothing spectacular and wouldn't order again.

The bbq here is a solid choice! Everything is truly good and we look forward to our next visit . Our visit visit was pretty late and they had sold out of much of their menu. Our second one - we came back specifically to try the whole hog platter. It was a bit disappointing with the volume and styles of meats. but still had several types of pork included which was different from some of the other cuts usually offered. Note that the whole hog is on Saturday only and they havnt updated their menus to reflect this.

While traveling we found this gem. We were greeted quickly by the friendly hostess. Waitress made a couple of recommendations and we took her up on them. The meal was plenty for two. We did add the ribs. The meats were smoked to perfection and oh so flavorful. They had different bbq sauces we like the KS one best. Everything is made in house and it was great. No complaints here!

Great & Friendly service. Caroline was a fantastic server. While awaiting our food, there was a good ambiance with a live perform. Our food ended coming out relatively quickly and was absolutely delicious. We got the Arkansas brisket and the ribs and they were so yummy!! The ribs were tender and saucy!! The brisket was also solid. Definitely get the cornbread if you can handle spice. They are spicy!

The food was good, the service was a complete different story. Sat and waited for a witress for 15 minutes, the restaurant was a third full. Once got witress placed order... then needed to get up again after waiting 20 minutes and a couple passing by from waitress to get the check. If you are paying Apple Pay, you need to give phone up to witress to bring to pay or get up and tap at witress station. All and all they may be good to cater something but in dinner room experience leaves a lot to be desired. But the strobe lights becomes of a broken light did not seem to concern the staff.

I've visited this restaurant a few times before and it's generally a decent spot to grab some good food. However, on this visit, they were out of almost all their menu items -- only sausage and chicken were available. Unfortunately, I ended up leaving to grab dinner elsewhere since I was really looking forward to some barbecue. I'd recommend calling ahead if you plan to visit this location to make sure they have a full menu available. If not, there are plenty of other amazing food options just a short walk down the street. Margarita was decent but a bit expensive.

Went here somewhat early in the evening, wasn't busy in the restaurant at all. The renovations make it much more efficient, they have a roof top area now which would be nice on a cooler day. Food was great, probably the best BBQ in the Frederick area if you ask me. I think if it was closer to the downtown area of Frederick, it would be significantly busier.

Photo of the time we paid after getting rushed out and kicked out for no reason.

Terrible experience. We're there hours before close and there were a bunch of empty tables so I'll start by prefacing that. Now, we both ordered wings and a beer each, before we did that I told our server we were going to order more food (because I'd been big time craving their ribs again) sadly I never got to order them. Here's why: as we're enjoying our wings, still many on my tray and actively eating, she comes by and asks if we'd like some TO GO boxes for our food?? My partner and I exchange glances bc we were thrown off by someone asking if we want boxes to go while we're still eating, hadn't been there long, and had sights on a rack of ribs?? To this, we politely say "no thanks we're still working on it". We then continue eating but discuss how weird that was. Less than 10 minutes later (Again, STILL EATING, beers unfinished) she comes by with the check and sits it on the table! No ask of "would we like something else", "how are things going" etc. At this point we feel completely uncomfortable and clearly unwanted in their establishment because never in our lives have we been treated like that. Why are we being rushed out with all these empty tables and on a day you're promoting "game day", which makes it clear to us that you want people to stay and enjoy your offerings. We weren't there for the game, we were there because until yesterday it was a place we loved to come to if we chose to go out. Then, after the server drops the check, the hostess hurried over and tried to clear my tray while I still had wings on it to eat! What is going on here Black Hog?? Again, we never asked for the check?? It wasn't even 5 o'clock at this point. We planned on getting a rack of ribs that'd I'd been craving from here, but got rushed out and treated poorly. What is going on with this establishment?? I saw no one else getting rushed out, or treated less than and it's completely unacceptable behavior. For clarification, we weren't getting rushed out due to it being busy, or the time getting close to close. We paid at 5pm, they close at 8. Make any of this disrespect make sense. NO ONE SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE THAT. Just adding a photo of the time we paid.

I've eaten at this Black Hog location (and their ones in downtown Frederick and Urbana) many times. All produce reasonable 'que - not award winning, but consistent and decent quality. Today's choice was a brisket sandwich. The meat was nicely cooked, and the bark looked nice, but it was underseasoned. As a result, it had no punch on the first bite or any that followed. I generally don't like to put sauce on brisket. The bark and the meat should speak for themselves, but in this case, I decided to try the three sauces that came with it: vinegar (Really? For brisket?), a sweet Memphis style, and a thicker Kansas City style. The latter two were too sweet for brisket, and the former was, well, an abomination. IMHO. The sandwich came with one side. I got potato salad, which also needed some pickle pieces, onions, paprika, cayenne - anything that added punch. Not the worst I've had in town, but not the best. (Yeah, yeah, I know it's subjective, but I'll stack my potato salad against anyone's. My Aunt Helen taught me well). Oh, I'll be back, don't you worry. Black Hog serves a consistent, decent product that is the best available in Frederick It's just not close to what I can eat from any of the countless hole-in-the-wall joints pretty much anywhere in Texas. But it's a much shorter drive...

I am from Eastern NC, so I have a pretty good idea of bbq and BC staples. I decided to try the flounder rather than the bbq this time. The founder was disappointing. It was a bit on the bland side and the batter is a little confusing. I was expecting a cornmeal style batter or similar, but got something different. The fish itself had potential to be very good. The beans also left a lot to be desired, just lacked flavor and taste. The business looks like they do a lot of catering as opposed to dining (possible a lot of to go orders, too).
