Sometimes you need a great steak. This is the place to get it. I had the filet medallions with bernaise sauce & baked potato. I ordered it rare and it was done perfectly. It doesn't look like a lot of food but I barely had room for dessert. I hadn't been here for at least 10 years, but now that I live nearby, I'll definitely be here more often. read more

They get a 1 because the old fashion was good. The meal was disappointing. I ordered a rib eye and wedge salad. I asked for a medium per their instruction on their menu, it came out raw. I ate around the outside and left the rest. If it had any flavor, I would have asked to cook the red meat left on my plate. But there was zero flavor so not worth it. Also It was supposed to be a Rib Eye and there was zero marbling? That was curious I can only guess it was dark in the kitchen and they grabbed what ever was there. The wedge salad was not a wedge salad, It was chopped up wilted iceberg lettuce with some bacon and a very runny blue cheese dressing. I left most of that as well. I was trying this place out as I was planning a family celebration dinner there. It does not get my vote. read more

Black hat has been and always will be my favorite steak house and restaurant in Evergreen. The food & Service is amazing. I have been visiting since 2009 always consistently great. read more

Great place to have a steak. Old west decor, country music playing and locals sitting at the bar make for a great dining experience. The service was top notch and the steaks were cooked to perfection. Standard pricing for a steak house and I felt like we got value for our meal. Portions are large and they allowed us to split entrées. Highly recommend. read more

Great atmosphere. Great wine. Great service. Great food. I will return with my entire extended family to show them my new restraint find!!

Let me start with the good: Steaks were perfectly seasoned and cooked, did not need any steak sauce, salt or anything, just plain good. The not-so-good: It was Friday evening, after Thanksgiving (2012), they were about half-capacity and so not what I would think was overly busy. - Service was SLOW, INACCURATE, AND APATHETIC - Took our order 30 minutes after seating. - We ordered appetizers. Appetizers never came - never delivered at all. - Ordered a bottle of wine. Waited 30 minutes for that to arrive. (Had to ask for it multiple times) - Entrees arrived about 20 minutes after the wine. We asked about the appetizers, they were like "Meh. Didn't put them in, too bad." - Baked potatoes were woefully undercooked. My date's potato was literally cold in the middle. - Waiter acted like we should be eternally grateful because he didn't charge us for the appetizers he never delivered. Serious! I was dumbfounded. We arrived at 6:20pm. It was after 9pm when we walked out the door - still hungry. We ended up stopping somewhere else to get a snack/dessert. The worst was thing was watching other customers arrive after us, got drinks and appetizers before we had our wine, were done with their entrees and eating dessert/paying/leaving as we were getting our entrees. But the steaks are really good, that's why they get a second star. No, screw that, they don't get a second star. They need to shut down and let a better-run establishment take their pathetic place. read more

Very disappointed. My wife and I first dined here about seven years ago. We were celebrating her birthday. I had the dry aged Cowboy Ribeye and my wife had a salad with steak bits. This was the best steak that I'd ever had in my life! I could literally cut it with my fork! Fast forward to today, also celebrating my wife's birthday, and what a let down. I've had much better steaks at Texas Roadhouse than the one I had today. There was no cutting this ribeye with a fork and for $75 dollars I would've been much happier at Texas Roadhouse. I'm so glad that we didn't invite friends with us after bragging about the best steak ever for seven years, I would've been so embarrassed. I was really let down. I would've given 1 star but the appetizer and sides and service were good. read more

If you're looking for a epic steak experience look no further than Black Hat. Their Cowboy Ribeye is dry hung and delectable. Meals are complimented by an impressive wine selection, and you'll love dining surrounded by Remington sculptures and Bev Doolittle artwork. This is a charming and intimate dining experience you won't regret! read more

Not gonna lie, was really excited to be so close to a steak house. The steak was over cooked and over priced. On the hunt for a new steam house. read more

Food was pretty good. I had the salmon, vegetable medley and baked potato. Baked potato was good, Salmon was good, nice and simple but a tiny bit fishy, and vegetable medley was amazing. Boyfriend had some cut of steak. It was good but a little over salted he said. Had the apple pie for dessert which was amazing. Inside was a touch dark with a Southern/Western decor feel. Nice dark wood work, and so many people wearing cowboy hats. Overall a nice experience without having to drive down the mountain. read more

We love this place for date night or a special occasion. Laid back country vibe in a mountain town. Would recommend!

Had a wonderful dinner at Black Hat Cattle Co. with my beautiful wife. We had the Cowboy Drumstick, a 14oz dry aged, perfectly seasoned, French cut bone-in ribeye seared at a sizzling 1800 degrees, that David Rodriguez (the Owner) hand cuts daily himself. Homemade cesar salad, cream corn, vegetable medley, baked potato, and apple pie a la mode.... equals a GREAT meal and had a wonderful time. Great atmosphere, music, food, and service.! We will be back! And those that know me....handmade bamboo toothpicks....oh yeah!! Oh and Crown on the rocks! read more

Amazing night out! Black hat is a lovely establishment with great decor, amazing food, and excellent service. The filet medallions and bleu cheese wedge were delicious. Will be visiting again soon read more

We didn't know quite what to expect when rolling into Evergreen. We just knew we were hungry! Our meal was generously proportioned. Pricier than anticipated however. Sill, it was delicious. The deserts were underwhelming. The meal was amazing. read more

What a gem! Black Hat Cattle Co. was able and willing to accommodate our large party. The service was great and the steaks, without question, were the best we had had in years. The hints of huckleberry on the menu was also fantastic. Black Hat Cattle Co. has outstanding food without the pretentiousness of other upscale restaurants. read more

Best meat in Denver area, incredible. Owner imports meat from a Montana ranch. Cozy and good service with awesome meat.

Always love coming here. The steaks melt in your mouth they are so delicious. When are kids are home they always want to make a stop here for some great food and excellent service read more

LOVE the food here - I've never had a more consistently cooked fresh steak than I have at this little local gem. I usually get the 8oz sirloin and my hubby the 12oz. The sides are a nice choice although my favorite is the creamed spinach, baked potato, or chorizo gravy mashed potatoes. I believe they butcher on site and if you are into animals all over the walls (I'm typically not but this is a small mountain town and a steakhouse...so I expect nothing less) than this is your jam! Highly recommend stopping by and worth the drive for those of you down in Denver! read more

We were passing through town and chose this place for a nice dinner. The place is clean, and service was quick. Our waitress was really nice and welcoming. I ordered a steak dinner and hubby ordered prime rib. We also both got salads (cesar and wedge) My steak wasn't cooked how I asked, but it was still tasty. The decor was simple and the atmosphere was charming. One thing I noticed was that there was a certain spice in almost all their foods. It was in the Cesar dressing and the wedge salad dressing and also in the bacon flavor - kind of like a smoked flavor... I did not care for it but my husband loved it, so I do appreciate their attempts to put their own spin on common foods. Because when it works (as it did for hubby) it really works. Kind of like having a great salad that you can only get there... Overall this was a nice dinner. I doubt we'll be back to that part of Colorado again, but it was a good dinner. Thanks! read more

My husband and I live in Indian Hills and are very picky about our steaks. We found Black Hat several years ago and have yet to find a place with better filet mignon (we've tried quite a few all over the Denver and mountain area). They always cook to perfection and the phrase "melt in your mouth" l now understand. The food is amazing and always keeps us coming back for more. Matt is such a wonderful server. He's always so friendly and makes us feel welcome. Even if you don't live near Kittredge I would recommend making the drive! You won't regret! read more

Black Hat Cattle is everything you would expect from a typical steakhouse. Pros -Service was good -Prices were affordable (check about the $35 per person special) for quality of food you get -Seating and parking were fairly easy -Never heard of or had Chorizo mashed potatoes - good, but wish they had a more prominent Chorizo flavor in the gravy. Cons -Wedge Salad - just okay - I am not taking major points off for a damn salad, but compared to other steakhouses, was just average -Beer selection was not good - domestics and standard imports. Typically steakhouses are not huge "beer places" but worth mentioning -Steak quality was okay - aged rubs/flavors were good, but not the BEST quality steak I have had. -Baked potato needed more seasoning If you are living or staying in Evergreen and don't want to drive to down to Denver, Black Hat Cattle is a perfectly adequate option. However, there are much better steakhouses down the hill. Overall: 3.75/4 read more

I love this place, it's worth the drive from Denver. It's quite, great food, wonderful atmosphere. The staff are great and attentive. This is quite the gem in the Rockies. This is the place I take out of town visitors to. Soon they'll be questioning if you're lost, but everyone enjoys the trip, and of course the food. If you want good food, somewhere kinda unique, and want to make a trip this is the place. read more

Hard to come by a steaks much better in Colorado for the price. Server was excellent (his name is escaping me...) and overall great value for a true steak dinner. After 2 return trips after my first visit, I have to note that either they have significantly improved or were just having an off night during my first visit. In both of my last 2 visits, I ordered the rib eye and both times it was excellent. The sides were good, especially the potato dishes. The wine selection has been expanded to include some good, moderately priced reds. Service was friendly. Keeping in mind you are in Kittridge and that this place cannot be held to a high end denver steak house, this is an excellent option for a nice dinner experience and very good steak. read more

This place idea a hidden gem, country atmosphere excellent food, I plan to visit again in the fall

Okay- here goes: I live in the community above Black Hat and have given the place five tries simply due to location convenience. The first time we went was for my birthday dinner and ordered the steak & lobster. I ordered medium rare- the steak came out medium (close to medium well) and the lobster was rubber. I am not one to make a big deal out of my food in restaurants especially on my birthday as we were having a great time and that can just be a big buzz kill. AND I am not a big picky person- so for me to write this review means- yep: this place sucks. BTW: The final ticket was $140- in no way was it worth it whatsoever. The second time, I go with a girlfriend for happy hour and Cassie the bartender was fabulous- therefore I resolve it can be a happy hour stop, not necessarily high priced dinner spot. Remember- I live 3 minutes away so I can be reasonable. The third, fourth and fifth time all sucked. The third time, the new bartender was being trained (where's Cassie??) and apparently the kitchen cook was too because she had no idea what the happy hour Slider menu consisted of, took a guess and wrong-o. I was told it was grilled chicken with sweet potato fries. Nope. It was pulled bbq pork and regular fries. I don't want to get into my eating habits, but the grilled chicken and sweet potato fries fit into the Paleo (sorta) eating. So, back to not being super picky, I eat it. And the fries weren't even cooked- they looked as though they came off of another plate....from like three hours prior. Back to not eating at Black Hat- not even the happy hour menu, and resolve "how bad can they screw up a dirty martini?" Remember, I live 3 minutes away and the the place is convenient. The fourth and fifth time just sucked. The service is horrible!!! and the martinis aren't martinis. So, I talked to the owner. I explained everything I just said on here (in summary and without the sarcasm) and he said "okay." Smiled and said "okay." I looked at him waiting for something more. Nope. Last night was the first time in my entire life I left a big fat $0 tip. I'm telling you. Don't go there. Do.not.go.there. You're welcome. read more

Waitress gave us the wrong check but insisted the amount on the check was our "correct" amount. She was then annoyed and put off because we wanted to see our right check just to make sure. She was a horrible waitress anyways...and please, don't argue with customers, especially when you know you are wrong and just trying to BS your way out of it. I told management about this, but they didn't really seem care. Oh, the shrimp dinner was pretty pathetic for the price....6 small peel and eat shrimp with your 2 sides. I would skip that one if you have any kind of appetite. Thanks for the lousy Mothers Day dinner. read more

Right on HWY74 (bear Creek Rd.) on the way to Little Bear...and your there...If you eat after 5pm...call fist to secure a spot for one of the most enjoyable meals you have had since they plucked that bottle out of your mouth and put you on solid food...OMG..this place ROX Aloha for now.Breeze read more

We came for my son's 21st birthday and he was promptly greeted by the hostess with a Happy Birthday! The ambiance was very mountain like and log cabin ish. Don't let the outside fool you! I had the steak and tips. The birthday boy had the surf and turf his dad had the cowboy and my daughter had a salmon dish We have absolutely no complaints. The hot fresh bread when it first came out is amazing and perfectly warm. As a side we all had the vegetable medley at the suggestion of our server. So worth it! Spinach, carrots, purple cabbage and more, the seasoning was incredible! The absolute only thing that could have made this better is if they served liquor. That would have given it 5 stars. A cocktail and a shot for the birthday boy would have been great! read more

Recommendations: 1). order your steak cooked one temp up from what you generally like. 2). sit at the comfy bar where there is great service. 3). Enjoy. 5th star added after another perfect visit. Original review below: ----- I'm going with 4 stars for now - one more visit might get it the 5th. We've been here a couple of times and have had really nice experiences. First time we sat at the bar and that was great. Really good service and an outstanding porterhouse steak. One thing i have learned is that the chef here really cooks things on the rare side. I have ordered steaks here twice now (both times porterhouse because it is outstanding) and both times a medium rare order came out quite rare - which I can live with so I ate it as is. Lesson learned though, next time I'll order it medium. Hopefully he'll be consistent and I'll get a medium rare steak. ;-) The other time we came in was with my parents. My Dad is hard of hearing so I called ahead and reserved the little private room they have in the front. It was *perfect*. My dad could hear us and so he was part of the conversation, which really cannot happen in most places because they are so loud. I loved the little room and so did my parents - we will be returning for that reason alone. But the food, and service are also extremely good here. Just going to order the steak Medium next time and let's see if they can get that fifth star....... read more

Incredible experience! Great food. Great service. One of the best restaurant owners in the business who has a 30 year following. All of the steaks are 1st class! Really 4.5 stars. Food, service, location are outstanding. 4 of us for dinner. Started by splitting a couple of cesar salads. A little heavy on the dressing but flavor was great and we ate every single bite. They baked fresh rolls, that were hot and yummy, but a little plain. Steaks were great. Two of us had the bone in ribeye, the cowboy drumstick. At $40 it's not cheap, but wow, is it good. Cooked perfectly, tender and juicy. Came with a baked potato, hot and yummy, and veggies, cooked well. We also had the elk medallions. Really interesting, tasty, and again, cooked perfectly. Finally had the small filet. Crispy on the outside, cooked perfect on the inside. This is what you expect from a good steakhouse. Service was very good and attentive. Prices, while not cheap, were very reasonable for what you get. I highly recommend this place read more

If you're going to close for the holiday week, it's very customer friendly to have updated hours on your website, your door, and your phone recording. We called, got the message about no phone reservations, and decided to go anyway because it was a halfway point. They weren't open. The half of our party that made it said the doors were locked, hours were listed on the door staying they were open until ten... I get that businesses can change hours during holiday weeks, but what's the point of having all these forms of communication if you aren't going to use any of them? I sincerely hope there wasn't an emergency for the staff, and if so I'll retract my review, but at times the customer experience starts before for is set in the restaurant. This experience was sorely disappointing. read more

Food & service were both first rate. We had a reservation but was unnecessary on a Wed. eve. Rib eye special, however, cost $40!

Not for those looking for something complicated like such found in Denver. Rather, this is for those who enjoy great quality steak with taters. The ambience is set with lighting that is gentle on the eyes, soft country music, and beautiful Bev Doolittle paintings throughout. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon or stopping in after work to relax and enjoy amazing food. I must mention that the staff here is very professional and warm welcoming. I'll be back. read more
