Avocado toast, not very appealing

What a mess! Waited 1.5 hours to be seated and to be told that there will be additional wait because kitchen is backed up. The staff said the manager said not to shut off all the to-go orders which put the kitchen further behind. Management is the worst, this time and the precious time we visited. They need to have a manager is is going to be onsite and actually take care of the issues as it arises. I would recommend they fire the current management from the regional to the local manager.

Came here for brunch with a smaller group of three. it has a very old-school diner field even the menus are like little newspapers, which is a very cute idea the design wise it's a little busy, but it was cute idea I might delete. Service was a little slow. The restaurant was a little busy, but it seemed like our waitress took a very long time getting around to our table. Especially if we put in additional requests for napkins or additional water, so that was a bit of a downside to our meal. It's a very family-friendly restaurant lots of large groups there or groups with children. I do think the menu could use a little updating, especially as a non-meat eater. There were very limited options as far as any protein items. Also, the pancakes were much smaller than I imagined, they were described to be large. But, they're pretty medium sized to me, especially coming only in an order of two. Also, a lot of the food lacked seasoning or any additional flavor, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, this was a interesting dining experience. I think this is a good family-friendly place if you have picky eaters, or want classic diner food.

Ranch with chunks of red onion. Who does that. Cross contamination..

I ordered eggs bacon hash browns.. I had to send my food back three times. The waitress was good but you can only do so much when your kitchen can not make something as simple as eggs .. Will not be returning. Overpriced.

Black Bear is a go to when no one can think of something they want. The menu has something for everyone. I love their breakfast options. Breakfast is available all day. Service is hit or miss. We have had amazing service and we have had less than desirable service. Yesterday I looked at our ticket and was appalled that they were charging well over $3 for iced tea. That's crazy. I know prices are going up but $3.49 for drink like that is doing to much for this level of a restaurant.

We arrived and were immediately seated in the attractive dining room. Our waitstaff arrived shortly to take our drink order. She brought our crispy clean tasting iced teas and took our food order. Both meals were generously sized. My turkey dinner was piping hot and delicious. My spouse's was equally good. We would definitely go again. However, there is a growing edge -- they were out of steak, a certain potato dish, and blueberry stuffed pancakes. We weren't bothered by that but the people across from us were.

With frigid temperatures looming in STL, what a great day for some breakfast. Black Bear diner was a nice place to visit on a cold day. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised not too many people were there. We were seated promptly and was greeted by our server. They got our drink order while we pondered over a large menu of breakfast or lunch options. We both decided breakfast sounded better and went with a simple bacon and eggs dish and then ordered on of their signature breakfast dishes the Bigfoot, a large port of chicken fried steak and eggs. Both dishes come with biscuits so we add gravy for a minimal charge. While waiting for our orders, we enjoyed our coffee and beverages and caught up on the family gossip. Our food took a little longer than usual but it made have been short staffed due to the weather. When our food came we noticed the gravy was as warm as we expected and the hash browns weren't fully cooked. I'm not one to send things back because spending time the family is awesome. Overall our service was great and had a good time. And will be back

This place absolutely nails what a diner should be--unpretentious, welcoming, and serving food that hits you right in the soul. From the second you walk in, you get that classic, nostalgic vibe, but with a level of care and execution that's honestly hard to find these days. The food? Outstanding. Everything we ordered was dialed in--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and clearly made with intention. You can tell there's real culinary thought behind even the "simple" dishes. It's comfort food, but elevated just enough to make you pause mid-bite and go, "Alright... that's legit." Service was just as strong--friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to have you there. No attitude, no rush, just good people taking care of you the way it should be. And the atmosphere ties it all together. It's got that buzz--families, regulars, folks grabbing coffee, laughter bouncing off the walls. Feels like a place that's been part of the community forever, even if it hasn't. Bottom line: Shorty's isn't just a diner--it's the diner. The kind of spot you wish you had back home and will absolutely come back to whenever you're in the area. Easy 5 stars.

Got a table within a minute, and a (pleasant) server took our drink order a minute later. Pretty good for a new place. They didn't really redo the inside - same tables, counter, floors, etc. as it had as Hardees. They did add a Maitre D' desk near the door to handle the seating logistice. In general it had a good 'diner vibe' going on. I had the Garbage Plate (hashbrowns covered with cheese, crumbled sausage (or ham or bacon), scrambled eggs, and sausage gravy all piled in the middle of the plate. Overall, it was generous portion. The sausage was great - nice and hot and very flavorful. The sausage gravy was a little bland and just warm - not quite skinned over, but close. The hashbrowns were done crispy (as requested) but had a slightly different taste to them - I asked the waitress about this and they said they are fried in butter, not oil, which may have accounted for the taste difference. The scrambled eggs were, well, eggs. My other half had eggs over easy (three of them), a slice of ham, and some hashbrowns. The eggs were all done PERFECTLY - if you like over easy this is a big deal. The ham slice was a little thin, but grilled and very tasty. Same comments for the hashbrowns. It came with a couple slices of toast that were cold when served which make buttering them at the table an interesting effort, and there was only one flavor of jelly (grape) provided - we were told that strawberry was also available if asked for. Overall it wasn't a disappointing experience for a new place. We'll definately be back, and I expect the star-rating to jump then.

This was interesting…read more I've driven past this place countless times and figured I should give it a try. I got here at 9:30 and after standing at the door for a minute it was then I realized I could seat myself. The place is smaller than I imagined and due to limited seating, the only open option was an unbussed booth. I managed to wipe away the crumbs as best I could and then someone came and cleaned the table.. After that, the server came over, introduced herself and said she'd be right with me. When she did, I ordered the #2 from the breakfast basics with a small orange juice. Up until that point, everything was going fairly well. All of a sudden, I see this rush of people coming and going. Some walked in and stood there hoping someone would get up while they happened to be waiting, while others put their face to the glass to try and see in. Mind you, the booth I chose, which was the only one open, is right by the window. So not only do I have people hovering over my food, but then I feel the stares of people outside the window. It was uncomfortable and speaking of which, this can also be said about the booth seats. The saving grace was my food coming but unfortunately, my eggs didn't have any cheese like I requested. I informed the server and they were able to put some on. The stares and dirty booth were enough to make me hightail it out of there. But alas, no trip to the diner is complete without it being cash only! Thankfully, they have an atm inside but be prepared to incur a $4.00 fee. The food itself was pretty good; the atmosphere? Not so much.

From what I remember from my middle school days, City Diner is the best place to get a burger in North County. As a big burger fan, I truly love the burgers here. I ordered the Adam's double cheeseburger with a side of fries, and as always, it was delicious--I loved it! The ambiance can feel a bit crowded and loud, but it's definitely a great spot to grab lunch with a friend. I wouldn't recommend it for large groups, as it's more suited for smaller gatherings. Overall, the staff interacts with customers, shares stories, and ensures you have a wonderful meal. I highly recommend checking out City Diner and forming your own opinion about the restaurant!

Stopped in on 7/5 around 1045am for breakfast. Place was just over 1/4 full and they had 3 or 4 ladies taking orders. They were prompt in initial greeting and order taking (this is where two stars come from) but after that it all fell apart. Two simple orders; French toast with two eggs (over easy) and two pieces of bacon, and a slinger with rye toast. Order took a bit longer than anticipated to arrive, not too big a deal, but the order came out piecemeal with neither of us getting our all items on initial service. On both the eggs were cooked over hard, the bacon was burnt, the slinger missing cheese, and the "hash browns" lacked any seasoning or proper cook to them. Rye toast came out about 10 minutes later and barely warm let alone toasted. The French toast didn't even arrive till after all the other food was gone. It was cold, soggy, and clearly needed more time on the flattop. Server tried to do her best, but there appears to be no way for the kitchen to tell staff that food is up aside from them having to always keep watch. They lack any ability to keep items warm once it leaves the kitchen, and they really need to get a new cooking staff or at least get some training for their cooking staff. Florissant lacks any good breakfast food locations that are not fast food and they really could increase their business if they take time to look at and fix their internal problems.
