I stopped here for breakfast one Saturday morning. It was rather busy which probably explains the slow service. I ordered from the "make your own breakfast" section of the menu. Two scrambled eggs, two pork sausages, and 2 sweet cream pancakes were what I assembled. The eggs and sausages were good but the pancakes...oh those pancakes were amazing. They were so light and pillowy soft inside and the flavor was delightful. They provided a small ramekin of syrup, which wasn't nearly enough for these two large suckers, but I never could flag down our waiter to get more. Sigh. Pay on the way out at the register.

Homemade Meatloaf. $11.89. Ground beef and seasoned sausage. Roasted then topped with beef gravy and a deep-fried onion ring.

We had an OK lunch at Black Bear Diner in Newberg, Oregon. Black Bear Diner is a national restaurant chain with, at the time of writing this review, over 150 locations in over a dozen states. Most locations are on the West Coast, but there are a few as far east as Missouri and Arkansas. The type of cuisine served is classic American. This restaurant worked out for our group of eight because: (1) we were in the area doing a wine tour (Willamette Valley / Oregon Wine Country) and this restaurant's location was convenient to the wineries/vineyards we went to and (2) the restaurant was able to accommodate our somewhat large group, as walk-in customers, in fairly short order (we didn't have a reservation and I don't know if this place even takes them). This was on a Saturday around 1:45pm. While the restaurant is spacious and had plenty of open tables, we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table to be prepared for us. Maybe they were short-staffed. Black Bear Diner is old-fashioned Americana. From the outside in, the atmosphere is like dining in a wooden lodge, complete with brick fireplace, antler chandeliers, and art and decor featuring black bears and images evocative of the American West. I like it. In the front, they had a small display case of various pies, cobblers, cakes, brownies, and other desserts. The menus looked like black-and-white newspapers and were titled, "The Black Bear Gazette." They even have a jukebox. Neat. The menu had an extensive selection and I thought the prices were reasonable, at least, for what I got. I had the Homemade Meatloaf ($11.89) from the "Little Less" Dinner section of the menu. Little Less dinners include seasonal vegetables and red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy. In other words, less calories and healthier. My meatloaf was made with a "special recipe of ground beef and seasoned sausage," roasted and topped with beef gravy and a deep-fried onion ring. I can't remember if I substituted my seasonal vegetables out with one of Black Bear Diner's regular "homestyle" sides, Italian green beans with bacon. Regardless, that's what I had as my vegetable (green beans and bacon). Overall, the meal wasn't anything to write home about, but it was filling and satisfying nonetheless. I like this kind of food, and meatloaf in particular, and it wasn't bad. It served its purpose. On the menu, I noticed they offered all-you-can-eat fried fish for $15.99 (includes fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, and tartar sauce) on Fridays after 4pm. They also have prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays after 4pm. In general, I think Black Bear Diner is ideal for families with kids, groups, and for a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's easy. Service was good. Our server was polite and efficient. The hostess was fine. Not the warmest welcome. The section where our table was located, at the southeast corner of the dining room, was frigid. The AC was cranked up way too high. One of us had to go to the car and get some jackets.

Santa Maria Tri-Tip* (240 cals.) the calories don't include the sides.

I really want to like this place but they aren't fantastic. The steak is overly salty, the mashed potatoes are rehydrated, but at least the kids pancakes are massive. The servers are always friendly to us, and the atmosphere is not overtly warm but isn't cold shoulder either. We will be back as there aren't a lot of pancakes for dinner options in Newberg, but it's not a first choice.

Over medium eggs, like rubber. Don't advertise all day breakfast if the lunch cook is clueless.

She said yes, but walked away and didn't return for about 10 minutes. When she came back, I asked again if the table could be cleaned so my mom wouldn't put her jacket in it, and also requested a kids menu. She huffed, wiped the table, handed us the menu, and walked away. Another 5-8 minutes went by without any greeting or drink order being taken. A second server (with long hair, who said she was the GM's daughter) came to ask if she could get us something to drink. We ordered two waters and a root beer. She then asked the original server to take our food order. When the server came to the table, she didn't greet us or say anything--just stood there. I finally spoke and suggested she start with, "Hi, what can I get started for you today?" and we placed our order. The food came out incorrectly at first (brown gravy instead of white), but it was fixed and that part was fine. While we were eating, my son needed a root beer refill. I placed the empty cup at the edge of the table, but the server ignored it. After waiting about five minutes, I went to the counter to ask for a refill. Only then did she come up and ask what I needed. I asked her for a refill and requested to speak with the manager. Another employee went to get him. I explained what had happened and told him this would be our last visit. He didn't seem overly concerned. I understand being short-staffed, but this level of disregard for guests is unacceptable. When he asked what I would like to see done, I said additional training for the server. He didn't even offer a free meal which I was expecting after the way we were treated, or heck even just take care of the whole bill. It was only $28. The food here is amazing, but due to the service we experienced tonight, we will not be returning.

We are glad it was the Newbergundian Bistro. We had to start with a Croissant. It was very flavorful, but it was bit soft, not the perfect crunch that we love. The fresh squeezed grapefruit juice made an excellent greyhound. The Bistro had my favorite...Escargot as a special. WOW. So good. We then shared the Potato Croquettes. The accompanying fondue was so good to dip the Croquettes into. We finished with a Ham and Brie Sandwich that was excellent, accompanied by crisp and hot french fries. My wife had the Grilled Five Cheese Sandwich with Mixed Greens. She loved it. Traci was terrific and helped us throughout the meal.

We started at the bar, which was not comfortable for my mom but eventually we were able to sit on the patio which was great. Potato croquet appetizer - yummy. I tried the grilled cheese which my sister got too - yummy, but there's a sticky cheese on there that I didn't love. Greens that came with all items were weird. Didn't eat them - don't know what they were.

One of the things I found oddest about the evening was the hours of the restaurant. We dined here on a Saturday night at 7:30 - immediately after we were sat we were told we needed to order promptly because the kitchen closes at 8:00. I still don't quite understand why you would allow reservations so close to a kitchen's closing time. It ended up making the meal feel a bit rushed and lackluster.
