Last time I had Black Bear I was in Colorado Springs. I was surprised they opened up a location in Illinois. The waitress we had was an absolute Angel, she was attentive and we didn't have to flag her down because she always made sure to give us refills, napkins, straws without asking. I think great service made the experience a good one. We ordered the Bear breakfast combo and picked two scrambled eggs, steak and cinnamon roll French toast. My husband got coffee and water and I got the freshly squeezed orange juice and water. The eggs were overdone and cold and the steak was a bit hard. They had a trio of bear sauces and my favorite was the chipotle bear sauce. The experience was great but I think the things I mentioned can improve. read more

Tried this place twice. First time was during breakfast. For a table of two, it took close to 45 min to get our food and the pancakes were overcooked. The 2nd time we tried dinner. The section we were in only had 3 tables of people. We sat there close to 15 min without any acknowledgment of service. We ended up leaving. read more

I've only had one Black Bear diner that was absolutely horrible, and that was by my house in the town over of fernley. But this one swung it out of the park! I walked in the door, and I was immediately greeted by two very nice younger women, and I vowed to sit at the counter which was open seating. My server I think was Skylar. She was super quick to greet me and asked me what I wanted to drink right when I sat down, and she was super attentive to me for my entire visit. All the employees were hustlin!! I ordered the cream of tortilla soup, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Everything came out super quick, and super hot! And if you know about black bear diner, you already know about the portion sizes!! I was able to even sneak a picture of the cooks in action and the back room! Your typical Black bear decorum, log cabin style and wooden furniture. Overall, perfect visit! The best experience! I would give 20 stars if I could. We have been to Black Bear Diners around the country and were passing through and so excited to see this off the freeway. We were welcomed and seated immediately by a very kind host and greeted by our server promptly as well. Coffee was fresh and food came out pretty quickly. Delicious and exactly what we wanted (amazing salad and sandwich). Our server was awesome and kept up with refilling the coffee - which we appreciated. I love this place. This was the second time I've been here. Today I had lunch by myself. My server was Jody, she was very nice and accommodating. The decor is nice, and while there were a few other diners close by, it was not overly loud. Music was a good selection, and also not too loud. Will definitely be back. I had the Cobb Salad. Delicious. I also got the cheescake to go. I had a special request for the cheesecake topping and while it took a few minutes to get an answer, they were able to fulfill my request. I feel Jody and her manager went above and beyond to help me. Last time my husband had the salmon and I had the black & blue burger. For desert i had cheesecake and he had the berry cobbler. The service and food is usually pretty good. (Not always the fastest service.. but the food is usually good.) Today, probably the worst . I take my grandsons once a week for a treat to go out to eat. We waited all week. They chose here. I don't know our waitresses name. Younger African American with long hair. She came to our table to get our order pretty quickly, but after that... it all went downhill. Never saw her again. We were looking for her to ask for refills. Nowhere in sight . We all had straws in one glass of water. My mashed potatoes were literally cold. That.. I can't blame her for, but I couldn't even tell her, because she vanished. Couldn't find her to give us boxes. I managed to stop another waitress, and explained I knew she wasn't OUR waitress, but could we please have boxes. She asked if everything was ok, and I said no. She did take a percentage off the bill, but that's not really what I wanted. We wait all week to have an outing , and it was kinda ruined. I could see if the place was crowded but it honestly wasn't. This is the second time we've been to this location. I want to love it like the ones out west, but this location is a miss. The first time was New Year's Day they were severely short staffed. We waited over 2 hours but they did make us aware they were a chef down and it would be a while. The fried chicken was overcooked to the point you couldn't get the chicken off the bone. The meatloaf and soups were perfection. Today, we ordered the meatloaf and the turkey. Meatloaf was great but the turkey literally had TABLESPOONS of lemon pepper or some other strong seasoning. I scrapped it off and made a pile to show the waitress. There was enough to make a pile on my plate. I didn't say anything while we are eating as I don't want a replacement with spit in it. The wait staff saves this place. Both times had lovely servers. I told my husband we'd try one more time. It's just VERY DIFFERENT to the WA and CA locations. read more

True to the Black Bear Diner brand, the food is excellent, the atmosphere friendly, and the prices fair relative to portion size. The new Morris IL location lives up to the reputation. The only drawback: located in a truck stop off a major highway provides awesome convenience but the bathrooms were disgusting. read more

OK road food. Something better than another McDonalds. Wait staff is efficient and friendly, kitchen slow. Waited over 25 minutes for bacon and eggs. Food quality was good. The biggest drawback was the really loud music. Plus it was a really poor choice of music more appropriate for a teen concert than a restaurant. This is a new restaurant in the area having recently opened. I assume there will be difficulties for a while. I hope they're successful, but please eliminate the music. I am rating my review regarding our Thanksgiving dinner at the restaurant which was not as expected. First of all, the overall offerings of the menu was fair, however, everyone in our party thought that $30.00 for the holiday turkey, ham, etc. was just a little bit overpriced. I ordered the steak which was very tasty however became very hard as it got colder. Green beans, mashed potatoes, were average. For the holiday price we probably will not be back, however, we will be back for other visits because we do like the other foods. I was used to meeting family for holidays in the previous years with the big salad bar and their home cooked meals so when I met a friend halfway and saw what had replaced it I had expected much more. First of all there was hardly anyone in the restaurant eating but it took over 45 minutes to get our meal. I had a Taco shell salad and my friend ordered a large salad. We ordered coffee while waiting and either one of us could even drink it. It was the worst coffee either one of us had ever had. So very strong. Just terrible. The taco salad was soaked in oil and there were no refried beans. I told the waiter and he picked up the shell and said look underneath and on the plate was a big smear of refried beans! I don't know what the purpose was of that because I would have never looked under the shell. Very strange for sure. I was pretty much in shock at the whole dining experience and it seemed to just being run by kids. They wouldn't take any discount off my meal or compensate any of it. My wife and I was in the Morris area shopping and decided to stop by for dinner. We had heard the restaurant was reopened under new management and wanted to give it a try. When entering the restaurant, we were told there would be a 10-15-minute wait and they were right on. We loved the remodeling that was done and was really impressed with the food and service. The food was well prepared, hot and very tasty. After ordering, the food was prepared and delivered to the table very quickly. The portions were large enough that we were able to take the leftovers home for another meal. The service wasn't exceptional but very good. We will definitely return in the future. read more

This, for us, was a one and done. The first indicator of a sub-par experience was the queue at the front door, where the hostess seemed to have no idea what she was doing. The abundance of open tables should have eliminated that, but it made no difference. We were eventually led to a table involving the least amount of walking for the hostess and right on top of everyone else. Then there was about a 10-minute wait to get waters and plunk in our order. We observed that very little food seemed to be coming out of the kitchen, and there were many tables with no food and lots of impatient, disgusted faces (including ours). After waiting around half an hour and seeing no sign of our waitress, we up and left, vowing never to bother with this place again.
