I'm writing this review with mixed experiences. Breakfast is always amazing. The staff is attentive and on point. The food is hot and delicious. BUT....... Lunch and dinner is the complete opposite. Didnt come in with high expectations, but what pretty nice. I ordered a cheeseburger which was pretty good, and we ordered a chocolate pie for the table. It was really good but I expected it to have more crust, it was almost all pudding! My mom had a steak sandwich (in photo) and it was pretty plain, like they just shoved a piece of steak in between the bread, no sauce, no nothing. My friends and I came here because it is a fantastic place for families and kids! Two of our friends brought their 2-Year-old daughter, which is why we opted for a kid-friendly restaurant! It reminds me a lot of IHOP, Denny's, and some other breakfast places. But with a lot of bear decorations, statues, and benches! And with big food portions!! The biscuits here are some of the biggest biscuits I have ever seen!! You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck because the food portions are huge at very affordable prices! Some of my male friends ordered the country steak with biscuits and gravy because they wanted something very hearty and filling. One of my friends loved the huevos rancheros, and another friend loved the mini volcano dish. And two of us each got the "Bear's Choice"! For my "Bear's Choice" combination, I ordered 2 eggs Sunny-side up, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes! Although it gets busy here on the weekends, our wait time was reasonable. The hostess said it would be 30 minutes or less. But perhaps we were somewhat lucky. We got seated at our table after waiting only 15-20 minutes. Our waiter was super nice and gave us a lot of good recommendations! I wish I got his name because his customer service was so exceptional and excellent!! I love their Papa Burn Habanero sauce. I literally drown my steak with it, and Oh My, it's so spicy, but that's how I like it! There's always a lot of people here on the weekend even if you come doing an off time like say 2:30 pm. I would expect that the lunch rush is over but it's still plenty of folks in here. I always order the same New York Steak breakfast but I usually change the sides to keep it interesting. Order: New York Steak Sierra Mist Steam Veggie Biscuit Dessert- black bear claw and hot coffee Con- Food takes a long time to come out. We sat next to the door, which felt like the worst sitting area. Plus the cashier kept coughing and we were right next to the front. Their manager notice us looking, he came over to check on us and explained that he doesn't let his employees come in when they're sick. Our waitress was a sweetheart and very attentive, she checked on us a few times. Just a tip, keep it basic when you're ordering food. It is an all American style breakfast diner with huge portion. I just moved to the area and never been to a Black Bear Diner before so I wanted to check it out for dinner. The inside has a warm homey feel to it and the staff were polite and attentive, pies and puddings were neatly displayed in a glass case when you first walk in, and the restaurant was clean.... the food order was different story. I ordered the full-course meatloaf with a baked potato and seasonal veggies but the meatloaf I got was something that looked like it came out of a pre-made package and then was reheated. The gravy was extremely salty and I didn't even taste the meatloaf because I couldn't get past how it looked. read more

LOCATION: they have their own parking lot. Plenty of big sized parking spaces so no worries about getting your car dinged or if you have a big car. ATMOSPHERE: super family friendly. This place does get packed for breakfast especially during the weekends. They have plenty of seats both inside and outside for waiting. They have a cute woodsy cabin theme going on with lots of black bears everywhere, and I mean everywhere. There's a grizzly bear statue in every corner, every details, from printed on your coffee mug to bears on the curtains lol. Oh, and most importantly.. it's clean. FOOD: cute fun menu to go through that's printed on a newspaper. Now let me say, if you wake up starving with a big bear appetite then this is the place to go. Serving size is humongous! Almost too big. These are meal sizes that can be shared. And it even comes with sides. I recommend the sides of biscuits and gravy which is a meal in itself cause it is so huge but yummy. I myself am all about quality vs quantity but this place has it both. SERVICE: food was a little slow coming out but our waitress was very nice. I've eaten at 3 black bear diner restaurants los angeles ca, tracy ca,and milpitas ca. This one here in milpitas ca is by far the worst one. The waitress wasn't so friendly the table and seats were sticky even after they were cleaned. The salad had no taste even with dressing. I had the slow cooked pot roast with massed potatoes and gravy witch tasted like it had sugar in it. I swear it seemed like they put sugar in my food. Service is really bad here. Cooks are joking and laughing real loud like the don't take there work seriously. This will definitely be my last visit to black bear diner in milpitas. I should have known when we pulled into a nearly empty parking lot at 9am in a Sunday. The prices have increased substantially and the flavor isn't what we're used to. Thankfully the wait staff are still great. The meat lovers omelette was much different than in the past, it looked sort of delayed and the sausage had zero flavor. I ordered two orders of French toast and it was awful, cold and chewy. The sausage i ordered was also cold . . . Not even a hint of warm. I understand that these times we are currently living in requires food to be delivered and there might be slight quality issues. This was not due to delivery as I have used delivery for a variety of different restaurants and have not had this as an issue. I tracked the order and it went from the restaurant to my front door in 4 minutes. I don't recommend using Black Bear Diner if you are planning to have it delivered unless you like cold food. Called in my order and paid with credit card when I got to the restaurant during shelter in place. Tend to eat smaller, independent restaurants, especially during COVID. But, I have recently been on the hunt for the biggest Country / Chicken Fried Steak I could find. So far, Black Bear Diner is the winner with its Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak. This thing is about the size of a dinner plate, smothered in gravy, and tastes like salty. So yeah, it's pretty good. Their Chocolate Cream Pie is also good. A little too sweet with not quite enough chocolate flavor, but just big enough to claim it's just for one person (it's not). read more

I asked our waiter to confirm it was prime rib and he did. it was not the prime rib I expect and it was $35. Black Bear Diner is okay. I really like the decor of this place, it's very cute! The customer service wasn't very attentive and my brother and I went at a time when it wasn't that busy. I found myself raising my hand a lot, trying to get the attention of our waiter or any waiter/waitress. My brother ordered the chicken fried steak with a side of fresh fruit and scrambled eggs. I thought the chicken fried steak was good, but the country gravy was lacking in flavor. It was a little bland, compared to others. I ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of green beans. I thought the food was just okay, nothing too special or that stood out. However, I really liked their selection of sauces. My personal favorite was the habanero sauce to go along with my fried chicken. I wished the chicken that came with the chicken and waffles was a piece of chicken thigh or breast, but instead, it came with 3 chicken strips. Also, their side of green beans had bits of bacon in it. I'm not too sure how I feel about that. Overall, I would come back if I am around the area and want some traditional, American diner food.
