I went to a Black Bear Diner 15 years ago in Redding CA and I was impressed! Most notably huge portions! I went to Black Bear Diner last night ( 1-27-16) here in Gresham OR and I have 4 things to say, on the good side our waitress was very nice and accommodating. On the down side there were three things. One, as nice as the waitress was, she forgot a side dish we ordered. Two, the food was luke warm including my tri-tip steak. :-( Three the most important, THEY DO NOT GIVE MASSIVE PORTIONS ANYMORE !!!!!!!!!!!! That was the number one thing they are known for!!! They say that they give huge portions, but the truth is they don't. They give you the same amount of food any other average diner will give you. Would I go back? Fun, family-friendly restaurant. It has a bear theme, so there are bear things everywhere. The atmosphere is a typical diner, kind of like a nicer version of Denny's, but covered in bears. Super rude. My family and I waited at the host stand at the front of the restaurant and were never seated. We made eye contact with three people including a red head who seemed to be the host and were not seated or even spoken to. Arriving late on a Sunday morning we were expecting slower service due to the volume of hungry guests but we had no idea how slow this place actually is..... water/coffee came rather quickly but we had to attempt flagging down any employee several times for a spoon to stir said coffee. We waited almost 15 minutes to place out order then another 30+ for our meal to arrive. We both ordered meals with avocado as part of the dish but were disappointed with the amount we each got. I had almost one full sliver of avocado and my boyfriend had almost half a sliver. I asked for more avocado and that came quickly but my toast still hadn't arrived. I sat and patiently waited for the toast they said would be coming but after almost 10 minuets, we asked what the ETA on my toast was. My toast came a few minutes later but wasn't what I'd consider toast. It was more like warm, floppy and slightly soggy bread with a healthy amount of butter on top. The hash browns weren't fully cooked, only warm and some still quite stiff. I never got a water refill but he coffee kept flowing. We walked to the front to pay and the cashier asked how our meal was.... we both paused and said "well, we're not hungry anymore, it could have been better". She didn't respond so I said "oh, did you really want to know how our meal was?" She responded "what was that?" Clearly she wasn't listening to the answer she had just asked us. I think this restaurant is going to be successful in Gresham for a long time if they address a few small but important things. When we showed up for breakfast there was staff everywhere but no one greeted us or even acknowledged us for over 5 minutes. When We were seated the waitress took our orders promptly, Gave us or food then disappeared and never refilled or asked to refill or drinks. We even had to ask for the check after sitting there for a while. To be fair this was my first visit and the place is always packed so this might not be a common problem. This is the worst play for customer service. My husband and i have been there 3 times. Been seated and not given a menu or even asked if we needed anything. We decided to go there as a party of 8. I had previously taken the Family to the location off of 164th Ave in Vancouver for breakfast but never again. I was reading through the Dept. of Health surprise inspection food safety checks and recently this place received a score of 105!!!!! Zero (0) is a perfect score with no infractions to food preparation and safety, 100 = shut the location down until all the violations are corrected. 105. We have been here a few times now, the food is pretty good. I've ordered 2 different turkey sandwiches which were piled with meat. The only problem at all is my husbands meal they forgot his ham steak, but to be fair he ordered something (can't remember what it's called!) that came with a lot of food items. Go with a small fam 3/4 peeps and get seated really quick, need a table for 6+ and it can be a long wait while they get tables arranged which means they have to wait for others to vacat at the same time. It's interesting how busy they are every time we go for a meal. We now just drive by when the lot is full and people are milling around the front door. I really don't have anything bad or good to say about the food as it is better than most Gresham fare. I have to admit I would have LOVED this place before I went on a health kick three years ago. The portions are huge and very flavorful. I would ask they have a few more healthy options so I can go their with my teenagers who do not need to watch their waists. Service could be a bit faster but the people are generally friendly. The only low calorie no caffeine drinks are water and coffee but to be fair thats the same as many other places. read more

This has to be the worst service we have ever had at the black bear. Grant it was Thanksgiving. You would think they we're down right busy by the amount of people in the lobby but as you get seated there are several empty tables. We were seated and waited for over 15 minutes. Another table waved someone down to get service. Well I ended up calling the restaurant while sitting at our table and requested service. Finally someone came only to hear the waiters argue over who was going to serve. Our waiter finally came asked our drink order then had the odasity to ask us if we we're ready to order. after 15 min I think we are. Then he brings my salad only to wait another 5 minutes and waving down a bus boy for silverware. Which seemed to be a huge problem with several tables as we heard many ask can we get some silverware. Finally we get our food but had no drinks. Hell they didn't even offer water. So we had to ask for our drinks too. Many tables around us we're very upset. Our waiter seem to have family or friends there by the comments he was making to them. And the fact he hugged them as they we're leaving. One of those comments was how awful some people we're and only leaving one dollar tips. Well maybe he should have gotten a clue. Our food was awful too. Our hash browns we're dry. Almost as if they were pre made then warmed up. Then to finally get our bill to pay. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. We assume it was the manager that was cashing out people as he was the only one wearing a long sleeve green shirt. He asked how it was I said awful we are not coming back here. His answer oh I'm sorry. I said what restaurant do go to and have to actually call the restaurant while your sitting in it to get service. He said oh that was you. I'm sorry. That's all he said. We decided to give it another shot and even worse. 20 minute to get a drink 30 minutes to take and order, almost 50 to get food. Do wonder if some of the great reviews are from friends/family of the owners. Words like great experience are NOT justified for this place. My friends and I made a reservation only to learn when we called to confirm that they don't take reservations even for groups. Would have been nice if all their employees knew this.. Man was uncivil in the telling.. And I do mean uncivil. We arrived to a packed waiting area. Two in my party had obvious disabilities. No one offered a seat f.or them to sit. Waited 30 minutes and then we were seated. Waited another 40 mins before we got any food and then half of us did not have silverware. Waitress said they ran out and she had to make more sets. I had clam chowder which was by no means chowder - very thin. Another was undercooked and another the food was not warm. When we left we spoke to Frances Herring, the Manager. she was a total waste of breath. Why she is hired as the manager is beyond comprehension. This is a service industry and she doesn't understand that. She told us to call an hour before so she could put us on a waiting list. We called 90 mins before this time so that was useless. Several of us wrote to corporate with rapid apologies received. They might be busy now as a new novelty but can't last. Word is spreading. The other day at the bank the teller told me I was the 4th person to complain to her. No surprise there. Those that posted quality is low are accurate. **Revised Review. 4/2018 After a couple years, we revisited Black Bear. We had incredible service and the food was good. We spoke to the manager and told her of our past issues and she admitted that hiring good help had been a real problem and took a toll on their business. However she was pleased to say she felt things have turned around and thanked us for coming back. We hope to raise the stars in the future. EACH time we have visited, the service was horrible. The waitress we had, had no problem telling me that it was going to be a while, for her to fix the incorrect drink order that she served. Then when you have to ask for something you ordered, a second time, and third time, and have to ask for a refill of coffee or other drink, you lose patience. In the end, the food lacked flavor (you know it is bad when your kids won't take home the leftovers). After the third visit lacking good service, they have gone on "The List"! We loved the Black Bear Diner in Bend, Oregon. To bad Gresham can not come close to their food and service. read more
