Unfortunately, things changed a few weeks ago when Troy told us they had done away with their bargain menu. The price of the classic cheeseburger and fries went from 9.99 to 14.29 in less than a week. We decided not to return. Then, yesterday, we went to a different Denny's, the one on 82nd, and learned that they still had the bargain menu. The manager assured us they always would. So once again I got to have the classic cheeseburger and fries for 9.99. I had thought it was a chain-wide decision, but it was not. It is just the Denny's on Stark in NE Portland that removed its bargain menu. From now on, we will drive a little bit extra to go to the Denny's that treats its customers with respect. I wonder if headquarters knows what the Stark Street Denny's is doing, either out of greed or mismanagement to cover its fiscal butt. read more

I mean...it's a Denny's, right? You know what to expect. And after having visited a Denny's in Japan during our last trip there, our expectations were...raised, somewhat. Even so, this location honestly feels like they are *trying* to be a cut above the rest of the chain diners out there, and to their credit, they have managed to succeed. It's clean; it's organized; the staff are welcoming, friendly and attentive. They manage to handle a line, and a rush of customers, in an efficient and competent manner. The food arrives hot and fresh, and fast enough to satiate even the most impatient customer. The portions are large, and the prices are reasonable. And when it comes to nostalgic comfort food (especially my wife's favorite, the Moons over My-Hammy, or whatever it is called), there are few places that can contend with the flavors one remembers fondly from their childhood. Denny's may not be a big thang for me, but it is for some (my wife included), and when measures on its individual merits, this location is doing exactly what it needs to do, and it is doing it well. Yes, I'm doing a review about Denny's chain family friendly diner/restaurant. Don't know that you know this but they have their own coffee blend which is seriously good coffee for a cup of Joe. I live on an Island with 6-8 bar restaurants and Denny's is my spot when I want a good cup of coffee. Their pancakes and pork sausages is my go to order. The pancakes are always super fluffy, taste fresh and large enough that 2 pancakes is 2 meals for me. I can't tell yah how their dinner or lunch specials are but they also offer mimosas! I will not name my server, but let me tell you; they were not kind. They had a special for a "cloud frappe" or something like that, I asked for it, and the guy flipped the menu to the drinks and said "this is what we have" despite the little specials card mentioning the frappe. When I pointed out the card to them, they said "ok" and gave me a regular cold brew coffee with whipped cream on top. The rest of the breakfast was below average. My friend ordered scrambled eggs and got over easy eggs instead, which is what I ordered, so we both got over easy eggs. She was too spooked by the hostile staff to point out this mistake. The eggs were a lot of inedible liquid egg white weirdness but that may be my inexperience with denny's eggs. The atmosphere was giving Impending Waffle House Fight. Two employees were bickering and one seemed new. Real "Kitchen Nightmares" stuff. I will not be returning. read more

I stopped in today for some breakfast. I had an appointment nearby and had time to eat. I should've waited. I had the chicken fried steak with hashbrowns and egg whites. It came with white toast and jelly. The hashbrowns were not cooked properly. They were still hard and seemed al dente. They were crispy on the outside, but the insides weren't cooked. I also had the chicken fried steak, which was small. It seemed like One of the patties you buy in the freezer section at the grocery store. The gravy was OK. The egg whites weren't cooked all the way. Mostly cooked, but there were edges that were still wrong. My server was nice enough, but I see no reason for myself to be back here again. We had a very long wait to have our order taken about 30 minutes. We had to ask three times for drink straws. About another thirty minutes, I asked to check on air food and the server went to check on the food. She came back with the food and it wasn't warm. I mentioned to the server the food was cold and looked like it sat out for a long period of time. As I was paying for the meal I complained to the manager and she gave us a 17.00 discount on a 75.00 tab and a 20 percent discount on future meal, but I live in Idaho. read more

The pancakes I had were exceptionally good--fluffy, flavorful and tender; I didn't even want maple syrup on them. I gave one up to my breakfast companion, though, since he did not care for his biscuit that came with the gravy--I could see he was having a hard time cutting through it. As a vegan I was looking forward to trying thier new plant based pancake slam. I asked the server for it & he looked at me like I was from mars, but he spoke poor English so I showed him the menu option & he insisted they didn't have it. Kept pushing their other menu item which had eggs instead of sausage. I told him no, I'm vegan but I don't think he understood. Finally he went behind the counter & another server showed him where it was right away. He came back to me, looked at the menu again & said "wow they want twelve dollars for that?" and asked if I still wanted it. At this point I was done, I said no, I don't. Several servers watched me walk out & nobody made an attempt to stop me & make it right. Came in today for lunch and had Kristina as our server who was absolutely amazing and kept our drinks refilled at all times. OK, it's Denny's right? So, I'm comparing it to IHOP, Elmer's, Pig & Pancake and a few others from my past (yes, Shari's). It can't stand up to better local diners like Cameo, Screen Door, Milo's, City State, etc..., so I won't even compare those. So, as a corporate dining experience, this one's surprisingly decent. They recently remodeled and the place is clean and open, the staff very friendly (especially since we are very friendly first) and actually remember who we are. We dome often, because it's the only thing within walking distance for my friend and we don't drive. I've had the burger here and I will say the patty is huge, but the veggies also fresh and crisp. Eggs are usually just right or on a little toward the overdone side, but never seriously overdone. Pancakes are fluffy and well sized. The french fries are pretty good when they are done right (they can be limp at times). The coffee is brown and while it ain't gourmet or anything, it still tastes better than Mickey D's. There is one thing though that I've discovered, a secret standout on the menu. So, for this place, here it is... my Pro Tip! Pro Tip: My goodness, try the chicken strips with honey mustard (and get the Lunch Special if you can, it's exactly the same number of strips, free fries, and costs about 1/3 less)! They are all real white meat, nothing that contains skin and feet or came piped and formed out of a factory tube like a certain place's McNuggets, and it's very moist and flavorful. The crust is excellent and crispy, thick enough to really add something but still an excellent ratio of crust to chicken. Seriously, my favorites have always been at Kelly's Olympian, but these might actually be a little bit better as the meat is in original cuts form, not flattened out. read more

I have been to several Denny's all across the US...pretty much mostly the same. Atmosphere is the same, food is generally the same (I'm a fan) and the staff are usually friendly but very busy and at some locations, it shows. Not here. This particular day I went I saw a very busy Kristina (I hope that's how you spell her name!) work a full section in a timely manner giving her attention to everyone equally even though we all know not all diner's attitudes are created equal...she managed to smile and people generally seemed pleased and taken care of. Including my SUPER PICKY friend whom I was with, she managed to impress her too! As someone who would consider herself a "professional" server with over 20 years experience, I've worked bars to fine dining, Kristina was a level 10 pro. I ordered the steak and eggs, with hash browns and toast. Ordered the steak Medium Rare, eggs over medium, hash browns extra crispy and the toast whole wheat. What I received was a very rare steak, cold in the inside, barely warm on the outside and not tender at all. Egg over medium well which for me is over done. Hash browns were barely warm and not even close to being crispy. They actually got the toast right. Waitress (Kristina) never asked me how my meal was, even though clearly the steak and has browns were barely touched, I did eat the eggs and toast she did ask my friend if she wanted a refill on her coffee, but not how her meal. Kristina also told a woman that her 96 (NINETY SIX) year old mother could not order from the children's menu. She blamed management because of the cameras watching AND listening to her that if they saw her hand them a children's menu that she would be fired! Is that really a company policy? If it is it's messed up and is descriminotory to the elderly and those people who can't eat much. Or is it just this particular waitress refusing decent customer service? I'm not sure if the cooks were having a bad day, or what the issue was but the only thing that was right was the toast, I have to wonder if Kristina put my food order in wrong because I left hungry and still paid for a meal I didn't eat or enjoy. read more

Staff was super friendly and was helpful to correct something the app failed to do. Kudos to you Location was clean and I noticed the lighting here was right as the bulbs had reflection shields to direct / shield the elements light from blaring eyes out of head like many places to Loved the peppermint hot cocoa with extra whip cream. The breakfast meal was good - and consistent with what I was expecting. Told a crew member this was my mom's favorite location to meet up with friends. So just being here made me think of her enjoying her times here too when she could. read more

Went in because I had craving for biscuits and gravy. So I get wait to be seated after a good five minutes, the waitress working to floor seated me, I told her I knew what I wanted. She left after fifteen minutes I called to one of the three people behind the counter. They didn't come and sent the guy cleaning tables, fine whatever. After waiting some time the brought out my food. The gravy tasted like flour,biscuits where flat and firm. I ate part of it didn't get a bill. So I walked to the check stand and waited some more.
