My wife and another couple had dinner there last Friday night. I had a Rueben and it was thick and delicious. My wife had an open faced turkey sandwich with mash potatoes and gravy. After my reviews and the reviews of many customers, I have to say all the replies from MGT. seem rehearsed and never address the issues directly that are expressed in the reviews. I'm sure we don't want to hear " I'll have my manager email you". Be precise, be specific on how you are going to address/change things. Why do we have to wait 10/15 minutes to be seated when the place is almost empty. Please explain that. That has happened to me on more than one occasion. I went for breakfast which they serve all day. I was greeted promptly and seated quickly. The waitress seemed busy but the place was not crowded. She took my order and ran off. I eventually got coffee and the cook delivered my food personally. As I said, they weren't too busy. I smiled and thanked him bc I like hot food!! It was delicious and just as I had ordered. Rodney is why they get the additional 4th star. It's been a long time since I've eaten here. I miss their pineapple pancakes :( I ordered breakfast and a half coffee half hot cocoa. Food was ok. Hash-browns could have been crispier but to be fair I didn't ask them to make sure they were crispy. The pancakes were good flavor wide but I feel like the texture was different somehow. It was opening time 7am and the food took so long. But what made my day was the server. His name is Rodney and he was so nice, so polite, he really just oozed out kindness. He was supper attentive and checked on us frequently. I mean he knew it was taking long for our food but he was doing a great job at keeping us patient. I stopped here after a 4 hour drive. I was pleasantly greeted by Rodney. I was so impressed how polite, respectful, attentive he was. Above and beyond service with everyone. He walked up and down refilling tea, coffee, and water. He was quickly taking orders and bringing them out. I haven't seen that type of customer service in a long time. I was a little skeptical to stop by a Black diner since my last one in California wasn't great. However, this time I'm so glad I did stop here. Thank you Rodney for above and beyond service. He treated staff well too, he kept thanking staff when he picked up food. This is the kind of staff that impacts morale. Ambiance is welcoming with plenty of booth seating (which I like). I ordered a breakfast for curbside pick up from THEIR website (due to having a broken wrist and elbow.) It gave me a pu time of 2:24pm (not a busy time in the restaurant biz) I got there 14 minutes late. I followed the directions on my receipt and called the diner to let them know I had arrived. I was informed it wasn't ready and they do not do curbside pick up. I told them they should take the option off their website. The hostess was very rude so I went inside and asked for the manager. They had 7 tables in different stages of dining. The manager came out and told me that the time the website gives is an estimate and the website doesn't know that they are Slammed . Slammed??? They had a manager, 3 cooks, 5 wait staff a hostess and 7 tables.???? I waited 10+more minutes. From the time I ordered to walking out with my food was an hour...for one breakfast. The manager offered me nothing for my trouble. I worked in the restaurant biz. for YEARS! I have done everything from a hostess to managing and everything in between. This was so disappointing. The manager missed an opportunity to take care of a regular customer. A Little Good Will goes a Long Way. This review is long overdue. I received a call from another restaurant the morning of my mothers surprise 90th birthday party, they called to cancel. With only 3 hours' notice I was in a panic to find another place for 20 people to go. I called Black Bear Diner and asked if they could handle a party that large on such notice. They informed me that they usually need a week so they can staff for that. I asked for the manager (Trina) I explained my situation to her and she said come on in and we will figure it out. I told her we were in no hurry and that fast service was not an issue. I started to cry as a relief that Trina did whatever she could for me and my mother. She made my mother's birthday so special, and I could never repay her for her kindness. Our waiter was so wonderful and patient. I called in an order to give the kitchen time to prepare it: a simple patty melt on sourdough with fries and tartar sauce. Ron, the waiter, estimated a 10-15 minute wait. Since I was staying next door at the hotel, I headed over after 10 minutes. The diner was nearly empty--just two guests seated. Ron, a tall gentleman, greeted me with "You, Sophia?" I replied, "Yes, sir." My food was already packaged, so I paid ($12.98 + $3 tip) and left. Unfortunately, when I opened the bag, I found the patty completely undercooked and the fries cold, as though they'd been sitting for a while. I walked back and was met by a woman I didn't recognize. After I explained the issue, she took the bag, and I overheard some discussion about the order. Ron approached me at the table and offered a drink or a scoop of ice cream while I waited. I politely declined--I just wanted the food corrected. Less than 10 minutes later, the order was remade. This time the patty was cooked properly, though the fries were only lukewarm. I'm a personal chef, so I understand kitchen mishaps can happen. However, the restaurant wasn't busy, and the situation didn't call for such oversight. My grandson and I went there for a treat and were set near some very boisterous, alarming swearing men who no ten year old should hear. There was no one to move us to another table until after forever a manager came out to take a complaint from another customer. After that the manager came to our table and took our order. Because of COVID-19 Hampton inn didn't had breakfast. We were looking for nice, warm breakfast to fill us up for rest of the day trip. Black bear was good choice. From the beginning everything was perfect. We were seated promptly and coffee appeared within seconds on our tables after order. My choice was vegetarian omelette and classic Benedict for my husband. Food was very delicious. Rodney provided excellent service! We were so happy with our breakfast. Everything is matching so well, napkins, coffee mugs and even unique news paper style menu. So cute teddys everywhere. We ended buying cute teddy as a memory of this place. Next time we will be in the area we know where to go for delicious breakfast. At 940 the waitress told us that it was gonna take about 45 min to an hour for food because of a party of 50 in the back? Already waited 40 min... 4 plates of food left kitchen in the hour we were there. Ended up paying for our drinks and left at 1015. Never again!!! We stopped here for some takeout while charging our Tesla. This Black Bear Diner has the superchargers installed in their parking lot. We visited a few days ago during Covid. This location is very convenient for people charging their cars and the parking lot felt safe. I ordered a Cobb salad and my husband the chicken fried steak. My salad was fresh and had a good ratio of lettuce, lots of bacon, cheese, etc. It was quite good. My husband's chicken fried steak was not so good., He said it was a bit mushy, as if it had been reheated and hot prepared right away, he thought it should have been crispy fried. Especially because we picked it up right away, so I am taking a star off for that. It was possible to use the restroom, and the bathroom was very clean.
