This is a nice spot. When we walked in it was around 10 and crowded but not unbearable. We ended up sitting at the bar. I ordered jerk wings, and my friend ordered the cod and cassava which was yummy also. We both had a drunk a piece the bill came up to 43 bucks total. There are full entrees available also. I decided to try this place because I follow Jessie Woo and wanted to see for myself what the hype was all about. Made a 7:30pm reservation for a Friday night dinner for myself and daughter. Came in, no tables available. Hostess went to check to see who was leaving soon. Bizarre!! She came back and we followed her to the back and was seated across from the open kitchen area. The waitress attitude from the beginning was a turn off. Not sure who hurt her in her life, but when you are in a hospitality industry, you have to learn how to turn off that mean face ghetto attitude. Bottom line, this place is ok but definitely overated. The food was just ok. I guess because I am Haitian-American I had higher expectation for the food. I am all about supporting black owned businesses, especially my Haitians. Two friends and I decided to go to BK9 for Sunday brunch this past Sunday. We have been here a few times before maybe two or so years ago without any substantial complaints. This time it was a disaster from beginning to end starting with the noticeably inept hostess. This woman had absolutely no business being the first person encountered upon patronizing this establishment. Her demeanor and attitude were disgusting. We sat outdoors and inquired when the heaters would be turned on. We were given no definitive answer, vague responses. More time passed and they still were not turned on. After inquiring again, their response was basically they are not sure- FYI the large stable heaters were never turned on during our dining time. Not much later a man from inside then proceeded to bring out two flimsy portable heaters; one placed on the sidewalk in front of our table which was on the street. Neither of these heaters were supported by additional weight at the base, i.e. sandbags. Minutes into our meal, the entire heater falls directly on top of our table, on top of our plates, knocking over drinks, and making a complete mess. More importantly, it fell close enough to my friend's arm to where she felt the heat. It was very scary. Thankfully, the drink that spilled that made direct contact with the heater was nonalcoholic. Otherwise that entire table could have been in flames! Everyone around us was saying how lucky we were. It took a few minutes before a waitress came out looking completely confused and not very helpful. Everyone else that followed mimicked that same sentiment. A lot of the consecutive mishaps leading up to the heater toppling over could have been rectified with adequate follow-up customer service. Instead it felt like no one cared. They were dismissive and acted aloof. A manager never came, or representative of any sort never came out to apologize and assess the situation, not even the incompetent hostess. We saw our waitress twice! Once when she took our order and again when we left. She never came back out to check on us, confirm if we needed anything, see if the food was okay, nothing. Tea that my friend ordered earlier was being replaced and brought out by the hostess. She approached the table with a nasty attitude asking, "who else ordered tea?" Not with "I'm so sorry," "are you all okay," "is there anything we can help you with" none of that. So disgusting! That was the final straw. We had to get up and leave. But the service wasn't very good. Was seated at 4 waitress didn't come until 4:30. She had an attitude from the start and was annoyed because we wasn't sure what we want because everybody was still trying to figure it out and was talking. Then she's going to say we been seating here for how ever long she thought we was I just had to kindly let her know we been waiting on her to place our drink order. The food took a while to come but wasn't really a issue to us because we was having such a good time dancing and laughing. The food wasn't great i had the chicken and waffles and a friend had the oxtail and it need flavor and salt. This is a really nice neighborhood restaurant in Park Slope. It's the vibe Park Slope has been asking for. A Caribbean cuisine that is not your average. I came in on a Friday night. I was greeted by a waitress and she sat me at the bar, the barmaid served me immediately even though the bar was packed and the table tops were full. Looking over the menu being it was my first time I wanted to try everything. I started off with the jerk wings. Very spicy, well done the way I like them. For my entree I had the oxtails, rice and peas with cabbage. Delicious! No fat, all meat and plenty of gravy, I was very much satisfied with my meal. The DJ came in later to spins some tunes. Since when was it ok to smoke at a restaurant even outdoors. When I say smoking, I mean cigars. Do you know bad cigars smell? Horrible. But yet it's ok at that place. Under the Smoke Free Air Act, smoking is illegal in most indoor places, including bars, restaurants, clubs, offices, and many other public areas. In all fairness the only place you really allowed to smoke in NYC is the sidewalk. 15 ft always from the door that's is insane. But than again it's your restaurant. Today I went to BK9 to celebrate my cousins recent marriage proposal. I have been there before and the food was absolutely delicious so I suggested it for brunch. When we first went, we were told the wait would be 30 minutes. The server then said we would be seated sooner but that never happened and we still had to wait over 30 minutes. When we ordered, the server took our food order before drink order so I thought our food would come faster! Boy was I wrong. The food forever. As expected the food the incredible. Soooo tasty so much flavor. My drink was also awesome. Unfortunately, one of my cousins ordered a side of fries and another one ordered bacon- the fries took ridiculously long and the bacon came like 10 minutes after we were all finished our meals! Afterwards, we ordered dessert. I wanted the Romeo y julieta and my cousin wanted the the rum raisin cake. After like 25 minutes, we were told there was neither. He said they only carrot cake red velvet and chocolate cake. We re ordered according to the new options and then again 15 minutes later he randomly said there was nothing and there was only red velvet cake and we would have to wait for it after it was made from scratch. Defeated, we asked for the check. Of course it took a really long time and of course there was an issue. The server told us that the machine was broken. Eventually the broken machine was fixed and then our server comped a lot of the meals. The only reason I am giving 3.5 is because the food was delectable and the server seemed to feel bad and accommodated us with the check. My first Yelp review, and thankfully it's for an exceptionally good reason. This establishment beyond shined. THE EXPERIENCE I couldn't have asked for better service and hospitality. I booked my birthday brunch here, at the 11th hour (with less than a week's notice) and within that time they accommodated my party of 20+ guests without hassle or restriction. Thankfully, we were not forced into pre-fixe or brunch packages. They allowed our entire team to order a la carte, straight of the menu. They even added personal touches to the table - personalized menus + flowers. THE STAFF Basia, Gary, Craig and the entire team were personable and so thoughtful. They called to follow-up, and confirm, plus emailed the menu in advance. THE SPACE Super cute! The venue has a private dining space (downstairs), and backyard. The private space fits about 30 seated. It was intimate, but not too tight. Guests were able to stand up, and mingle in between meals. Plus there was a speaker and LCD screen in the room. Once we connected our playlist to the speakers, it was a full blown party! THE FOOD We were there for brunch, and personally, the food and drinks were delicious. However, based on feedback from my friends, here's a list of what did/didn't work. - Oxtail Hash (Amazing! 5 people ordered it, and all 5 were smiling by the end of the meal.) - French Toast (Melt in your mouth good) - Banana Rum Coconut Waffles (Didn't taste the coconut, but overall good) - Chicken & Waffles (Chicken was good, plain waffles could have been better) DRINKS Order the Punch de Creme, and you won't be disappointed. The waitress never followed up with my boyfriend on either visit to see how the meal was or if we needed more water or drinks. We literally had to wave her down MULTIPLE times. Came here for a friend's birthday and was so impressed by this establishment's patience with us. We were intended to be a party of 12 but ended being 14. Not only were they patient with several members of our party being over an hour late but accommodated us accordingly. Our server Mikail (sp?) was wonderful. He was very attentive and was constantly checking in on us to take refill drinks and or take a new food order. Over all, the food was great and the service was wonderful, all things considered. BK9 was not what I expected. The restaurant wasn't that eclectic to me for Caribbean cuisine. I am Caribbean and not just talking... they had just a few colorful paintings thrown on the wall. The food was good and so was the drinks. The service however was terrible. We went on a Saturday night right before the Chris Rock concert and they only had 2 servers on the first floor. They obviously knew the concert was in town due to them having an entire menu of drinks naming all of Chris Rocks movies and shows (which was cute by the way). People including us had to keep asking for the waiter. We didn't even have desert for fear we would be late to the concert. You guys needed to be better prepared. This was a cousins birthday celebration outing. Headed out to BK9 and you should take a cab of public transportation bkuz find parking is the worst over there! After looking for parking for about 20mins I found s spit like 5 blocks away. As I walked into the place it felt like a Haitian restaurant atmosphere. We were seated quickly but they were short staffed because one guy was legit waiting on all the tables he was doing his best but it took long for us to order and to get our food. We went fir brunch and it advertised us being able to have the brunch and happy hr if we arrived before 3pm which we did but was able to get it. We were told that there was only 20nins left which we didn't understand. In the middle of the whole experience in the back a fire started because a person threw a lit cigarette into the garbage of the restaurant. Smoke quickly filled the place and fire fighters came. It was controlled but the smell was strong. After all that happened we got our drinks and food. The Dj started to play Haitian music which at first I was surprised and thought it was just in my head. Then got com formation from my cousin and we started dancing! The food was some of the best I had at a restaurant. Most of the dishes were Haitian based so I was already excited. I got my food and everyone wanted to taste it. They must of over looked it in the menu because they said they would of ordered it. The bartender delivered subpar service (slow, inattentive, uncaring) and overcharged my tab because "people knew my name" but there were two other people with similar sounding names and she didn't check to see if they were ordering on the correct tab. I was sitting adjacent to the bar at all times but she did not care to ensure that the proper items were going to the proper account as a result, I was overcharged by 40$ and she included a gratuity because unfortunately I was part of an event there that night. The drinks were small and overpriced, the service was terrible, and the only redeeming quality is the owner of establishment. I highly recommend people stay away from this bar and it's terrible bartenders. read more

This place is HIGHLY disorganized. It took over an hour just to get our food and the waiter (Anthony) put in the wrong food orders anyway. I came here after graduation with a party of 5 with a reservation. My sister who made the reservation even let them know there was a graduation at Barclays nearby today and they said thanks for the heads up, and still they were severely understaffed. Now I work at a bar, and am usually super sympathetic towards waiters/bartenders and wait staff in general, but the service was just abysmal. We watched 3 other parties of about 3-4 people get their food before us even though we put in our orders first. It's not like our orders were complicated, we ordered literally straight off the menu with no substitutions or anything. When I serve people at my bar I serve people in the order that they ordered. It's graduation day and they should have expected multiple parties. We were literally the first family to enter to the restaurant but the last to be served. The only other ppl there were people sitting at the bar who were only drinking and not eating, and then one couple who had already gotten their food. When other families coming from the graduation came they were served food first instead of us. Not sure how that makes sense. To make up for the wait, Anthony offered us a round of free drinks on the house. Did we get those? Nope. The whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth and put a damper on my graduation day. read more

Lord knows I'm one of the biggest critiques of a restaurant. The starters were great. Had the empanadas and the wings and those were great. The entrees were ok. The black rice was the best part. I got plantains that I expected to be sweet plantains but was disappointed when they weren't. The pork was ok as well. What made my night a little disturbing was how revealing the outfit of one of the waiters was. As workers they should have a dress codes. Black button ups and black pants with non slip shoes. Came here for my friends 30th birthday we had a 9:30 reservation didn't get seated until 10:30 we ordered right away and got our food an hour after that. When we went to our server to ask for a dessert for our friends birthday the server said she would try because it's busy never acknowledged us or mentioned anything to us about the dessert after. When we asked for water she said what to we want from her? She added 20 percent gratuity to 6 different individual checks which we would happily pay if service was fast an efficient. We get Saturday nights are busy and can get backed up but to not even acknowledge or apologize for delays and still force a tip was ridiculous. Management or whoever the other lady there was very rude and walked away when my friend told her service was terrible. First and last time there. I really enjoyed dining at BK9. The service was great--super warm and courteous staff--and so was the food. I'm a Caribbean native and appreciated the twist on some traditional dishes. The oxtail empanadas were a hit. I also had a really tender and flavorful goat shank with puréed sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts and carrots. Delicious! It was a large portion too. My cocktail, the Hispaniola, was a little weak, too heavy on the grenadine, and didn't have enough passionfruit or rum. This was our first time eating at BK9 restaurant. After being seated it took a few minutes before the server came and introduced herself to our table. We were there for brunch and ordered our drinks and food but our bottomless mimosas took so long to prepare and didn't arrive till about the time our food arrived. We have no complaints about the food the dishes we ordered were great. When it comes to the service however it was not as good. Our server barely checked on our table considering she had to pass our table every time she went to get a food order from the kitchen. On one of the rare chances we got her to come to the table after we finished our main course I asked her about desserts because there were none listed on the menu and she told me what they had and ran off without checking if anybody else at the table wanted dessert. The host eventually came to our table and apologized saying he was supposed to be handling our table because we started complaining about the service we were not getting. While all of this was happening the bar area was getting crowded from a party they we also hosting downstairs. So now our table was getting crowded and bummed by the party attendees because they needed drink service they were not getting downstairs. I think more staffing needs to be hired or they need to manage there staffing placement better when they are hosting parties and providing table services so neither patrons in each area feel they are not being serviced. Also forgot to mention that our bottomless mimosas service was interrupted because they ran out of champagne to make them and had to wait for the next order to arrive but we were not told that till we once again complained that the drink service was not being maintained. The current 3.5 star rating is mostly spot on. People complain about the service and certainly the service was labored. The food has highs and lows. Shrimp appetizer was very good. Burger was fair. Fish and chips were just plain greasy and not well done. Drinks sounded great, but the execution was just fair and the ETOH content seemed lacking. Wine list was not good. The atmosphere was excellent. Not too loud, festive, rustic, a bit romantic. I would not say you should pass on this place, but owners need to correct a few soft spots. Cheers! read more

Two of us walked in on a Saturday night around 7pm and we were told it would be a 30 minute wait. We walked around the block for maybe 10 minutes and came back to see if maybe we could stand at the bar to wait since it was sweltering outside. The hostess was surprised and confused that we were back because it hadn't been 30 minutes yet. She said there were no spots at the bar but there was a table was wrapping up that might leave in 10 minutes so I asked if we could just wait at the front, no rush. She said sure and a minute or so later she said there was an opening at the bar. She sat us down, told us someone would be by to clean up and wipe down the area in front of us and take our orders. Not a problem we said. A minute later, as we sat there perusing the menu, a man came by and sarcastically thanked us for taking his seat. We felt terrible, we had no idea and apologized but he said he was leaving anyway so he left. By this time, we felt incredibly awkward. We waited for one of the bartenders to ask us if we wanted anything or a waiter to stop by but no one did. There was a woman that came up beside us minutes later who appeared to be a regular and the bartender went straight to her, got her drink order, had a conversation with her and when she left a few minutes later, the bartender walked away. Never even acknowledged us. We had been waiting to get her attention but she walked away so briskly, we couldn't even flag her down. There seemed to be at least 3 people behind the bar and none of them even glanced over. The bar area in front of us was never wiped down and the empty glass sat there in front of us so even if you didn't realize that we were new customers, wouldn't you have asked if we wanted a refill? We ended up feeling so awkward about the situation, from the seating incident to being ignored for 15 minutes, that we decided to get up and leave. I will say the manager at least noticed because he came by as we were getting up to leave, asked if it was because of the wait and apologized. As for the atmosphere, it was pretty lively if not disjointed. There were multiple TV screens showing the news and one showing Olympics basketball. Broadway/Phantom of the Opera music was playing and the restaurant looks very beachy/Caribbean, which I thought was a strange combo.
