This was our first time eating at BK9 restaurant. After being seated it took a few minutes before the server came and introduced herself to our table. We were there for brunch and ordered our drinks and food but our bottomless mimosas took so long to prepare and didn't arrive till about the time our food arrived. We have no complaints about the food the dishes we ordered were great. When it comes to the service however it was not as good. Our server barely checked on our table considering she had to pass our table every time she went to get a food order from the kitchen. On one of the rare chances we got her to come to the table after we finished our main course I asked her about desserts because there were none listed on the menu and she told me what they had and ran off without checking if anybody else at the table wanted dessert. The host eventually came to our table and apologized saying he was supposed to be handling our table because we started complaining about the service we were not getting. While all of this was happening the bar area was getting crowded from a party they we also hosting downstairs. So now our table was getting crowded and bummed by the party attendees because they needed drink service they were not getting downstairs. I think more staffing needs to be hired or they need to manage there staffing placement better when they are hosting parties and providing table services so neither patrons in each area feel they are not being serviced. Also forgot to mention that our bottomless mimosas service was interrupted because they ran out of champagne to make them and had to wait for the next order to arrive but we were not told that till we once again complained that the drink service was not being maintained. This place is absolutely terrible. I ordered oxtail and rice and peas. The rice tastes burnt. I let the waitress know and they took my plate. 45 minutes later I didn't receive my food back. The owner told us they would give us drinks on the house however that took more than 29 minutes. In addition to that, I still haven't received my food as I'm typing this review.. Two of us walked in on a Saturday night around 7pm and we were told it would be a 30 minute wait. We walked around the block for maybe 10 minutes and came back to see if maybe we could stand at the bar to wait since it was sweltering outside. The hostess was surprised and confused that we were back because it hadn't been 30 minutes yet. She said there were no spots at the bar but there was a table was wrapping up that might leave in 10 minutes so I asked if we could just wait at the front, no rush. She said sure and a minute or so later she said there was an opening at the bar. She sat us down, told us someone would be by to clean up and wipe down the area in front of us and take our orders. Not a problem we said. A minute later, as we sat there perusing the menu, a man came by and sarcastically thanked us for taking his seat. We felt terrible, we had no idea and apologized but he said he was leaving anyway so he left. By this time, we felt incredibly awkward. We waited for one of the bartenders to ask us if we wanted anything or a waiter to stop by but no one did. There was a woman that came up beside us minutes later who appeared to be a regular and the bartender went straight to her, got her drink order, had a conversation with her and when she left a few minutes later, the bartender walked away. Never even acknowledged us. We had been waiting to get her attention but she walked away so briskly, we couldn't even flag her down. There seemed to be at least 3 people behind the bar and none of them even glanced over. The bar area in front of us was never wiped down and the empty glass sat there in front of us so even if you didn't realize that we were new customers, wouldn't you have asked if we wanted a refill? We ended up feeling so awkward about the situation, from the seating incident to being ignored for 15 minutes, that we decided to get up and leave. I will say the manager at least noticed because he came by as we were getting up to leave, asked if it was because of the wait and apologized. As for the atmosphere, it was pretty lively if not disjointed. There were multiple TV screens showing the news and one showing Olympics basketball. Broadway/Phantom of the Opera music was playing and the restaurant looks very beachy/Caribbean, which I thought was a strange combo. We live around the corner from BK9 and were excited to try this place. There are still a couple of small (and kind of endearing) service kinks to work out, but the restaurant has only been open for a week. Overall - It's a great addition to the neighborhood and offers something really unique: extremely well-executed, well-portioned, refined but flavorful Caribbean food. You simultaneously get a casual and fine dining experience at reasonable prices, presented in an elegant but unpretentious way. During our meal, one of the 9 owners came over to discuss the restaurant's back story and it's easy to see this is largely a passion project - they've gone out of their way to make it a fun place to hang out. BK9 is a neighborhood restaurant we're really happy to support, especially given the high turnover of eateries in North Slope the last couple years (thanks Barclays). So - the food! I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was executed given it was only night 2 after a soft open week. Everything was cooked perfectly and was extremely tasty. We shared the oxtail empanadas with beet puree and the ceviche with yuca chips - both were really flavorful, cleanly presented but had a homey warmth to them. I had the Berkshire pork chop which was cooked perfectly (brine?) with a spiced kombucha squash puree & collards. My girlfriend had the skirt steak with chimichurri. We both cleaned our plates. To me, the food has the big flavor that you expect at a holiday family gathering or one of the many excellent Crown Heights Caribbean eateries, but looks like it could hold its own at Le Bernardin. Which coincidentally is where the executive chef is from. We'll definitely be back and hope more people come check it out. read more

Came here for Sunday brunch and walked out an hour and a half later still starving!! Service was terrible, food came out stone cold (shame as it probably would've been pretty good otherwise). The place didn't seem busy (there were maybe 10 other diners when we sat down) but it took an hour and a half to get our food! After waiting an hour, we asked about our food and were told that the chef was putting the finishing touches on our plates (by this time we could see that our plates had been sitting up on the counter untouched for a while already), and that we'd have our food shortly. 20 minutes later we asked again (dishes still sitting on the counter getting cold)...server was full of excuses, blaming kitchen staff for messing up. Finally got our food and it was stone cold. Cold shrimp Benedict (and room temp home fries) and my friend's chicken and waffles were not much warmer. We flagged down our server and she shrugged it off with more excuses about some mix up in the kitchen before suggesting that she could *microwave* our food?!? But told us they would not remake our meals as it would take too long, then went another step further, telling us they had run out of eggs Benedict anyway...seriously??? She did give us the option to walk out (and not pay for our meals)...so we took her up on her offer! But she promptly asked us to pay for our coffee at the very least...despite the fact that she never came around to refill. Hungry and wanting to leave to find food elsewhere, we agreed to pay for the coffee and asked for a refill along with the check...she came back with old, cold coffee...needless to say, we left that untouched too. Opening review : I stopped by BK9 to meet up with a friend. Immediately was welcomed with a smile. The workers were extremely friendly. My friend and I sat down and ordered the mango margarita. It was amazing ! We then proceeded to order our food ! We started with the oxtail empanadas. It was soooooooo good ! She had the braised oxtail dish and I got the hunger steak. My friend raved about her braised oxtail. She was right it was beyond amazing. My steak came with diri Jon Jon. Which I was familiar with since I am of Haitian decent. That is our famous dish. The steak was amazing however I was expecting the diri Jon Jon to be amazing how I know it to be. It wasn't. The owner came and asked about the food and I told him that's not authentic Haitian rice. Went to BK9 this evening. Loved the vibe and the menu. The jerk chicken wings starter was fantastic. Unfortunately the kitchen could not deliver on the main meals - my husband's curry goat had no curry; my friend's steak was served cold (the server had it re-heated but then it was tough) and my burger was never delivered, even after i waited 25+ minutes from the time the others in my party were served. I eventually canceled my order and decided to get pizza across the street instead. They did give us a free glass of wine and beer, but honestly that wasn't enough to get me to come back. Hoping these issues can be fixed as it is otherwise a promising place - and we live less than a block away. read more

I have returned to this establishment many times for 2 reasons: 1-the food is amazing 2-It's 1.5 blocks from the Barclay Center. The oxtails stew is to die for, portions are generous & each dish has its own unique flavor. The chef has created a very interesting menu, with new ingredients for old favorites. Everything we ordered was delicious - oxtail empanadas, jerk chicken (omg!!) braised pork belly, cod and cassava cake. Then for entrees - seared scallops and braised oxtail (the best!!). We sat at the bar and Ash was awesome. Super friendly and knowledgeable on Caribbean rum. Suggested a good run but when he knew we were mixing suggested a different one. I ordered the burger well done which often times means that the cook will burn the burger, but I didn't have that issue here. The burger was cooked to perfection. It was succulent and juicy. My dining experience wasn't the worst & wasn't the best. The food was not bad either. I don't think it was worth the pricing however.. We were met by a nice hostess then proceeded to meet our waitress who wasn't in the best of moods from what I perceived. I know everyone has their personal issues and/ or are probably exhausted from long days of work or whatever the case may be (we're humans) but you have to learn to mask those emotions a little bit. The waitress checked in on us regularly but the weirdest/ cringy moment occurred when she returned with a drink I didn't order. I think there was some miscommunication & she insisted that I did... remember I said she wasn't in the best of moods... so me being the polite, light hearted Pisces that I am said "okay I'll take it but I'm certain I didn't reorder it". The customer is always right lol. Even if I did or didn't order it, once I say "no I didn't" just take it tf back lol. Other than that it was a calm ambiance. They played a lot of American music, I was expecting more Caribbean vibes but perhaps it was the theme of the night given that the drink menu was named after Mary J & Nas (I'm guessing there was a concert at Barclays or something). THE DRINKS WERE BOMB BTW! Point being: even if the food was just okay, extraordinary services can make up for that. Believe me. While everything we ate was tasty, presentation was lovely, and service was super friendly, I can only give BK9 2 stars. I found that prices were extremely high vs. portion size - exception for alcohol: beverages were well-priced with a nice pour - and I could not find the Caribbean spice I was craving. Also, we ordered 3 starters and a main and all came out at the same time. Our main was crispy snapper so we had to eat that first lest it become soggy snapper. If the waitress had said food was served as fired, I would have asked her to hold back on putting in the order for the fish. The oxtail empanadas were excellent - best thing I ate. The coconut ceviche was bland but the yucca chips were nice. I liked the jerk chicken but I wouldn't call it jerk chicken: it was three drumsticks coated in a sweet & spicy sauce that wasn't very spicy. It was not terribly reminiscent of any jerk chicken I've ever eaten. The crispy snapper was nice and crisp and the cake under the fish was really good. The fish itself needed some seasoning though and again the sauce lacked spice. Finally, the music selection was awful: some kind of terrible pop. If you are going to run a Caribbean restaurant in Brooklyn, give me reggae or at least go hipster, not Taylor Swift. I would definitely go back for a cocktail and empanada at the bar, but I don't think I'll go back for dinner. read more

A friend invited me BK9, never heard of it prior but it's not a bad spot. Of course it's small, like most places in Brooklyn but decor is modern & simple. Apparently there is a lower level but I did not get to see it. It's the normal Brooklyn priced restaurant. Only had the plantains which was very tasty & a BK-9 mango punch. The reason it's receiving 3 starts is because the service is lacking. Not going to say it's typical for certain establishments because Ppl do have bad days but the second time I visited, the bartender was slacking. She took a couple breaks, one of them she went outside to smoke a cigarette & then was riding a bike down the block (and I'm serious about that). Not sure what stress she was enduring but it's not appropriate to leave patrons in need of service to smoke & ride a bike down the block on a Saturday afternoon. But that one 1 bad experience. My first experience was pleasant. I may visit again, not going out of my way to but if You are ever around the Park Slope area, it doesn't hurt to try read more

When we arrived we told the hostess of our reservations and she seated us immediately. Wasn't very crowded. We had very nice waiter. We ordered two oxtail entrees that was cold to the touch smh. We told the waiter about it he said he saw them take it out the oven. The food was cold but the plate was hot. Also I only received 5 oxtails for $20(kind of pricey) but the waiter he brought out a side dish of more oxtails once we complained(those oxtails.... cold as well). The current 3.5 star rating is mostly spot on. People complain about the service and certainly the service was labored. The food has highs and lows. Shrimp appetizer was very good. Burger was fair. Fish and chips were just plain greasy and not well done. Drinks sounded great, but the execution was just fair and the ETOH content seemed lacking. Wine list was not good. Unsanitary ! Went to this place for happy hour(which doesn't really exist) ordered the jerk wings and surprisingly they were fried. I said to myself hmmmm ok let me be optimistic . First wing was mediocre second wing was pink inside after I bit it , I bit the 3rd wing same result. After eating one wing completely and biting 2 I told the waitress she took it back I waited 10 min for another order of wings. Shocked I got back the same wings ( including the ones I bit) they were just refried.i asked the waitress if they just refried the wings I bit into and she said yes. I got there on Sunday about 330pm. it wasn't crowded because they feature a bottomless cocktail drink menu that ends at 4:00, so get there about 2pm for that but I will tell you the drinks are super duper great. so you might only need one.- the food was great if you like eggs for brunch and I do!!!! If you like your poached eggs lightly poached let them know. I had the pork and it was really good. this is for the restaurant-heads up bring your own birthday cupcake because I was not happy with the freebie cupcake. my suggestion to the restaurant is to eliminate a freebie if it's not done well (birthday cupcake) or even good, because this is what we will remember as a customer, Happy endings are SUPER IMPORTANT. but even with that being said I love this restaurant and couldn't tell them that while I was there, don't risk your reputation on a free cupcake when everything else was really good cause your reviews will reflect it. I actually had the chance to read some of the bad reviews before going here so my expectations were low I thought the ox tail empanadas we're going to be sold out but they were available and well worth it since I never had them. They have 2 floors I didn't even realize till the live dj mentioned it. The music was great . Was able to watch the game on the tv. The drinks were strong not watered down like most bars. Parking is typical for Brooklyn but after 9 it's not so bad. Will go again. read more

So my hubby and I went to Bk9 last Tuesday for dinner. We have been wanting to try it out for quite some time and were pretty excited. To say our experience was disappointing doesn't begin to describe how bad it was. First of all, the restaurant was not busy at all, yet it took 30 mins to receive the appetizers which we're jerk wings. Being Caribbean in Brooklyn, I've had my share of jerk chicken. These were lack luster. So on to the entrees. It took another 45 minutes for them to come out. I ordered the escovitch snapper and he had the oxtails. When the meals came out the presentation sucked!!! My rice and peas were cold. I had to ask for hot rice. What was supposed to be escovitch snapper was mildly seasoned fried snapper. Not a hint of escovitch flavor, no onions, it was topped with cold lettuce. His oxtails were decent. The rice and peas lacked flavor. Overall it was not a great experience. We left there still hungry and unfulfilled. We definitely won't be returning to that establishment. read more

One of the owners greeted us and they were accommodating even though there was a mix-up with our reservation. I really was expecting more from BK9. The food was cool but the dinner menu was limited. For example there were only 3 desert choices and none of them were appetizing. I had the snapper which was cool but the creamed spinach was quite bland for a Caribbean restaurant.
