The service was very friendly. Our waitress was nice, easy to find, and had a great disposition. However, it took way too long to get our drinks. Even though I got an extra dirty martini on the house because of it without even asking for it, which was a nice touch, it just wasn't very expertly mixed, I have definitely had better. Once we got the food, my pork shoulder dish was mostly fat, over cooked, and kind of dry. My friend's burger was unnecessarily spicy, and the other friend's steak was chewy. I went here two weeks ago with a small group and my experience can only be described as disgusting and disappointing. To start off, walking in the restaurant smelled very sour. I ordered the BK9 Punch, which despite it's deep yellow color, tasted of water and alcohol. I also ordered scallops which were rubbery and tasted like pure baking soda--I instantly gagged. Also, the waitress never remember any of our orders, didn't serve us our food together and she put a gratuity on our check for a group of four. Update: gave this restaurant a second chance. There were no more veggie burgers but the waitress suggested a salad instead and it was PHENOMENAL. I'm obsessed with brussel sprouts at the moment and they were grilled to perfection with almond shavings and a beautiful salad dressing. They call it the house salad but it needs it's own special name if it's going to be that tasty! Only reason I'm not giving a 5 star is because although the waitress was wonderful, it was a bit of a struggle for her to manage a 10 top. I thought we were really organized and concise with our orders and payments but the checks and food took about 30 minutes each, if not more. I'll still recommend this restaurant though! The food is excellently prepared, delicious, with flavor! The rum punch is so good, after 2, lets just say I had a great time! DJ is always amazing, so is the live bands that are sometimes there! The only issue I've ever had here was just how long it takes for the food to come out and when its busy there just aren't enough waiters! I must say however, one of the owners was there one time, during a time that my meal took over an hour to come out, and he gave my sister and I, 2 drinks on the house! Someone that can appreciate their customers and rectify matters on the spot, is quickly forgiven to me! I've visited over 10 times now, I do love this spot nonetheless! Went here for a brunch that was advertised from 3-10pm. Made a confirmed reservation with the promoter of the event. Arrived at 4pm for the reservations waited at the door to be seated as a sign indicated. Waited for 5mins and no one acknowledged me and my guests. On this particular night it wasn't buzy at all, which was a shock to me given that it was a beautiful Friday night. The place itself is beautiful. I had high hopes for the food since it was Caribbean inspired. The cocktails were pretty watered down, tasted more like juice and water, ranging from 11-13 dollars I expected to taste a little alcohol. My guests had the griot with Jon Jon and the jerk chicken. My guests enjoyed the Griot, even though some thought the sauce/ Pikliz was a tad too spicy; While I thought the main thing on my dish was blah, the lentil was good, The rice was okay as well but the scallops were tasteless, flavorless, and "fishy", I've had scallops before and these were by far my least favorite, I couldn't even finish them. Dessert was great, I would recommend the red velvet cake . Overall the ambience was nice , great music but the food / drinks could have been better. I attended, tastings, soft-opening, and grand opening here, great vibe for those who like to see-and-be-seen, a cool restaurant that is casual, trendy, and classy all at once. BK9 is poised to be a staple in this area, they are unique in that, though they have influence and inspiration from all over, the Haitian factor is not so overpowering and actually serves to bring it all together. Initial they asked if we wanted to share a table because the place was packed but we were able to get a table to ourselves as another group was leaving. Today was my first but will most definitely NOT be my last visit to BK9. I attended a friend of a friend's birthday party. And let me tell ya. I had a wonderful time! The space is nicely sized with ample seating. The kitchen is not sequestered in back and out of sight like most eateries so can see your food being prepared. If that's not your thing, you can watch your favorite program on one of three flat screen monitors. One of which is a large projection screen. The bar is appropriately sized for the space. Wall decor is sparse, but with so much going on with the kitchen, bar, tvs and DJ there's no lack of topics to converse about. Speaking of the DJ. He kept us on the dance floor the entire time. Lots of reggae, soca and kompa. I used one of the two restrooms on the main floor. It was clean and appears to accommodate a wheelchair quite easily. There is an outdoor space in back that I didn't have a chance to check out. I regret eating before I arrived, because my friend couldn't shut up about the oxtail hash she ordered. I ordered a drink, and the barkeep wasn't stingy with the Johnny Walker ($11). She was personable and very cordial- a common trait extending to the rest of the waitstaff. Getting here was an easy 3minute walk from Atlantic Avenue/ Barclays Center. In conclusion, if you're looking for a spot with good food, good music, a waitstaff and owner not above getting down on the dance floor with the patrons, and some time to kill before and/ or after a Nets game or concert, this is the place for you! read more

The brioche banana rum French toast was amazing! The raspberry sauce was a great compliment to the banana rum reduction sauce. It was perfectly executed. the chicken sausage was also delicious. I also tried a friend's Oxtail hash. It was really tasty- but it wasn't what I expected. I thought hash meant potatoes and meat (like corn beef hash) but enjoyed it nonetheless. The only reason BK9 didn't get 4 stars was the service. Our waitress left us on an island. We had to ask for more water 3 times. The last time we had to ask another waitress because ours was in the back eating. I also had to get up to ask her for a check. I came here with a group of friends after the African festival in celebration of one of my friend's birthday. Regarding the atmosphere, it was nice and warm. We also had a great waitress (Danielle) who was patient and well informed of each item on the menu (that's A +). She even made suggestions which some of us followed. Personally, I had the burger because I couldn't decide on what to eat. It came with a simple salad to garnish the burger and fries which were well seasoned and crispy. One my friends ordered the oxtail and another ordered the escovitch fish, which she said was just ok. As for the oxtail, I tasted a slither and it was good. The drinks, well mines was very tasty! First and foremost, I went in here with dubious expectations. But the welcoming atmosphere quickly changed that. I am a sucker for feeling at ease, and the staff did that with flying colors. Moving on to my meal. I started off with the Oxtail Empanada--succulent, and well cooked. Amazing. The main course was the Crispy Snapper. It came with a yucca croquette and crispy leek. And Oh MY GOODNESS. I HAD to call the chef over. The snapper was cooked to perfection-- not overcooked, with just the right amount of 'je ne sait quoi'. You will not be disappointed. So, I really only have good things to say about BK9. The main dining room is not huge but had a nice intimate setting with an open kitchen towards the back. They also have a downstairs seating area and a backyard for use in the summer months. There was a nice professional, friendly crowd. We found out its called BK9 because there were originally 9 owners. When we arrived a lot of the tables were set up as reserved so I would recommend making reservations to secure a spot at your preferred time. We began with drinks. I ordered the Guayabera and my friend ordered the Hispaniola and mojito. The Gin, lime and cucumber was very refreshing. The flavors meshed so well. The Hispaniola had passionfruit, im not a fan but it had a very nice taste and not overly sweet. The mojito also had nice minty refreshing flavors. For an appetizer, we ordered the mussels. The mussels were the absolute star. They were made in a curry sauce with a nice amount of heat from the pepper. The sauce was so amazing I had to tell my server I wasnt done so I could scoop up all of it. If the restaurant was not so intimate I would have taken it do the head like finishing a bowl of cereal. Its a must try. The only downside was the bread. Nothing creative about it literally 2 pieces of toast. For my entree, i ordered the spicy shrimp with a side of brussel sprouts and my friend had the fried crispy snapper. The shrimp could have used more spice. Brussel sprouts were cooked well with just enough seasoning. The snapper was crispy but tender and the diri jon jon, black rice was on point. My friend is Haitian and very particular with her jon jon and was suprised how authentic it taste. The staff was amazing from the bartenders, cooks and owners. The owner chatted with us for a bit and gave us a round of drinks on the house when he found out it was my friends birthday. I definitely will return to this restaurant.
