We came as a large group for brunch and every single one of us loved the dish we ordered. The chicken and waffles, eggs Benedict, oxtail hash, shrimp and grits, and rum coconut waffles were all SO delicious. Everything was seasoned perfectly, and the hot sauce they offer was bomb as well. The ambience was great too. I highly recommend this place for brunch, and I'm guessing their dinner menu is fantastic as well. read more

This place is located right around the corner from the Barclays Center. When I got there it was lunch time but the place was empty which was great for me. Interior: The place is not small, not large, it's medium sized. The interior is very dark which kept it cool in this hot day in June! They have a huge screen(I recall a projector set up) for those who want to watch sports like the World Cup! They also have a TV by the bar. The bar seats about 10 people. The bar is fully stocked, so you can get most things you want. (I took a pic of the drinks menu) Food: The day I was there for some reason they were not making fried chicken or jerk chicken. We ordered the oxtail and jerk pulled pork sandwich. The food didn't take the ten minutes I was told it would take to be prepared, but it wasn't an ridiculous wait time. We probably waited about 20 mins. The food was piping hot, fresh and tasty! I underestimated the spice of the pork- I'm not sure if it was the meat or the slaw that came with it but it packed a nice punch. The salad was tasty, I didn't taste a dressing on it though. The oxtails were good and it was a nice size portion. I feared it would be three small pieces of meat- it was plentiful with enough to take home. Service: Jasmine the waitress seemed to be the epitome of a server at a West Indian restaurant- exhibiting little patience coupled with lots of attitude! (Note I said seemed) Jasmine turned out to be very pleasant and just a bit overwhelmed since she was serving tables and tending bar. By time we left all the tables across from the bar were filled as was the bar! Jasmine made sure to check on us and was very quick with anything we asked for. To my dismay, they were still serving brunch only. With the limited options on the brunch menu (that doesn't explain what everything is and no the pictures on the tablet are not helpful!) I got the Oxtail hash. I wish I could be excited about this dish, but it was lackluster. The meat was tender, yet tasteless! I've never had to ask for salt and pepper for my food at a Caribbean restaurant. I asked for pepper sauce and was given Tabasco sauce. When I asked the male waiter who handed it to me if that was all they had he said he didn't know because he didn't know about pepper sauce. When the waitress came to check in on us I asked her for pepper sauce. She said they had some hot Haitian pepper sauce which I said I wanted. She took the Tabasco sauce off the table and I'm still waiting for this phantom pepper sauce. I ended up eating the food without the sauce and just kept shaking on the salt. My friend really wanted to support a black owned business which is why we trekked over here. The service was so so. The food came out really fast (probably because they forgot to use seasoning). We had a show to catch at Barclays & wanted a place to hang out & get drinks before the show my friends came across this place. We Stopped by it was not crowded we sat at the bar since all we wanted was drinks. We all had beers & a Red wine , I do not recall the name of the beer my friend had picked it I went with the same one taste wise it's pretty harsh but main reason we choose it was because I believe it's 7.5% alcohol for beer that is crazy , taste wise a bit harsh leaves a bit of an after taste but definitely nice amount of alcohol to it so it was great. Wine was good. As for the place itself it's small not too much on the decor , service at the bar was good. It happen to be happy hour so the bill was very nice the beer on tap was about $4 dollars & change definitely not bad at all. Came here for a friend's birthday dinner recently. We had a prefix menu. It was $50 for a three course meal. Portion sizes where pretty good. The restaurant is very cozy. I had the jerk wings as an appetizer. The oxtail dinner and they had a chocolate cake as a dessert but didnt eat it since I dont eat any dairy products. I came here from out of town for some good Caribbean food and music and BK 9 did not disappoint. In terms of food, I played it safe and went with the jerk chicken which came with peas and rice and vegetables which included cabbage and carrots. With other Caribbean restaurants I have visited in NYC or LA I am frequently disappointed because the veggies are boiled beyond recognition. They are usually soggy, lifeless, and flavorless. That was not the case at BK 9. The veggies were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The chicken was also excellent. Crispy with jerk sauce with the right amount of spicy. I came here last night after nets game and was super starved. I was here once a few years ago part of Kwanzaa crawl but never got to actually experience their food. We didn't have to wait too long before we were seated. In terms of covid safety, they do a phenomenal job of making sure the tables are spaced and have dividers between them. First time going here yesterday. At first it was a bit awkward after being out and dining in a restaurant after a year with all protocols and the waitress was a little standoffish, but was receptive thereafter. The food was great. I only gave 4 stars as my Wife asked for a well done burger and it was pink on the inside as she bit into it. I was a bit taken aback when my wife asked would they remake the burger but she said they would put it back on the grill...not sure about that.. however the waitress rectified it and obliged another order instead. Ohhhhh those potatoes tho....man delish!!!!!! My wife and daughter had the chicken and waffle, they said we're awesome. I had the waffle for breakfast darn good!! Times like this I really wish I could give two separate ratings, but since I cannot I will start off with the positive things first - which is actually only one thing THE FOOD. OMG! The food is honestly super delicious! You cannot go wrong with any meal you order. I came here twice during the summer (both times on the weekend) and had the jerk chicken and oxtails. Highly suggest both. Now for the negative. Customer service would be 2 Stars. Upon my last visit my friend called ahead (around 6pm) to ask if they had their oxtail empanadas (best item on their menu). The reason she called is because they tend to run out of this item which is highly disappointing. The employee confirmed over the phone with my friend "the empanadas are on our menu so yes we have them" We felt it was a rude response, but ignored it. We arrived at BK9 that Saturday at 8pm and was told by our waitress that they "ran out" of the oxtail empanadas. Our waitress never told us her name, never refilled our table with water, never checked on our table once food was served. Our table was unattended for 90% of the time. If the resturant was cowded or busy, I would have understood more but that was not the case. I truly hate mediocre customer service and hope this spot is able to get their staff to the same level as their food. read more

We waited almost an hour for our food and ordered the last round of drinks that never arrived at us. The food was good but could be better. Came out for a friends 30th birthday on a Monday night due to the positive reviews. My oh my was this a mistake. There was only 1 waitress working the floor and playing hostess all evening. We placed our food and cocktail orders and despite it being empty, our cocktails came at a decent time however our food order took 45-50 mins to prepare but only was brought out due to us prompting the waitress to check on the food. The Ribeye has little to no flavor, the creamy potatoes were mistaken for roasted potatoes and was only corrected by the chef who looked upset that the menu that was on the table outlined the incorrect item. The asparagus was obviously reheated and tasted that way. The Broiled Miso Salmon was over cooked and the French fries were cold upon serving. The BK9 burger was very very dry. The Hanger steak with carrots and brussels left little to be desired. The only upside to the dinner was the food crispy whole Branzino that came out pipping hot with tons of love and flavor. Please do not evening get me started with the music that kept pausing and buffering every other second. This experience left much to be desired and deeply needs a revamp of the cuisines, and customer service. read more

Came here for the Mommy is off duty high vibrations brunch. Everything started off slow as we chatted and got to know each other. The service was great and the waiter/waitress communicated whether the food was coming out or if there was a hold up in the kitchen. We booked the downstairs area for more privacy and with unlimited mimosas plus our entree it came out to about 70 pp. We went over our time but because our food came late they let us stay. Afterwards a few of us went upstairs for drinks and the dj was pretty good. As for the food, I'm a pescatarian and the pre fix menu did not have anything friendly for me and there was no substitution. My omelette was okay but I would've preferred not to pay so much for just eggs, salad and drinks. So maybe in the future they can add a viable pescatarian option since they do offer seafood on the regular menu. read more

My experience of BK9 commenced with me settling at my table and rushing to use the restroom. You can tell a lot about a place by the cleanliness of their restroom. It was after noon on a Sunday and the bathroom was terrible. I had to literally tidy it up prior to using it. My party already ordered but I wanted to leave. I was hoping for a better experience with the food, but it did not workout. I waited 35 minutes for a non alcoholic beverage. Every time I asked/ reminded the server, her response was that they were busy. I almost excused myself to buy a drink at the store.The appetizers for the brunch menu are nonexistent so I was really banking on the food to be great. The food is the only reason why I did not give this place one star. The food is...good. Our table had chicken and waffles, Caribbean Benedict and the black rice and vegetables. The salad truly lacks creativity and flavor. I really don't see any reason why I would return to this place. I think it needs more attention on cleanliness, waiting staff needs training and the chef perhaps needs more time to recreate and pay more attention to how they position or present the food prior to serving it. read more

Although, the two young woman that provided Service were wonderful, we were not able to enjoy our dinner. We felt rushed because there was an event that was about to take place just as we got our food. The individuals that were holding this comedy show started to move tables and chairs while we were eating. Needless to say, this is my first and last - so sorry....waste of our money - such a shame. The sad thing is that we ended up going someplace else to eat, spending more money which would not have been necessary if we were able to eat our dinner. I arrived at BK9 at 8 pm and left by 9:30. The service was so bad that me and my date were only able to order two drinks and an appetizer. We kept waiting and waiting for the server to come by, and he never did. Before we left I went to the bathroom. They have an open kitchen, and two people - maybe managers directing the servers to pick up the food - were not wearing masks and were breathing all over the food as it was waiting to be brought to tables. I'm talking RIGHT OVER the food, look down at plates with tickets, and talking about which table it should go to, with no mask. In the bathroom there was a sign that said "hand sanitizer station" but it was just soap. I washed my hands and then tried to use the dryer but it was broken. The food was great, very chill ambience & the was playing the perfect mix of soca, reggae and Afro beats, I couldn't help but want to buss a little whine while enjoying my seared scallops. Before I begin, I would like to say that I read negative Google reviews from non-POC and thought, "ah they are just complaining." I went for brunch thinking, it really can't be what the negative reviews are describing, since the positive ones say GREAT things about the food. So, I proceeded to try... I'm a little bummed I did. First of all, they are severely understaffed. The waiters are not only taking orders and serving, but also checking names at the door, bussing the tables and monitoring how many empty glasses their are for their (poorly executed) bottomless brunch. The bartenders may not really be *mixologists* and moreso people that know how to add juice to liquor. At one point a bartender came from behind the bar to also take names at the door? Then, what seemed to be the hostess, came to ask if anyone had a reservation (after me standing in line for about 20 mins) and was seating people without communicating with the poor waiter who had already been doing all of the work. Then, she just disappeared to the back and never came back ???? A literal shit show lol. Now, onto the food that everyone raved about. Perhaps, it's phenomenal for dinner - but the brunch menu is lacking... hard. If you're not an egg person, the only option you REALLY have is either a waffle or burger. Fine, that's standard... I had the oxtail hash which was more of a oxtail stew with your choice of egg on top. The seasoning was great, it was edible, but it just... lacked? Or, perhaps it was the overall experience that was a downer? Also, they had tostones (fried plantains) instead of maduros (sweet plantains), which was like ??? why? lol The cocktails... are juice. I had the Hispaniola which was literally passion fruit juice and a tease of rum (maybe). It was also garnished with a maraschino cherry???? Went to BK9 for brunch and loved the atmosphere. Great location, nice setup and live music. The food was great we ordered the chicken and waffles, French toast and the carribean eggs benedict. It was not crowded and the staff was pleasant. The bad: I feel that they were short handed on the waitstaff. It was not crowded at all and we felt ignored at times. I have had the pleasure of dining at BK 9 on May 05, 2018, Cinco de Mayo. I will shout out restaurant owner/partner Mr. G. Casimir and Ms. Maya. They were absolutely gracious hosts to our organization; party of 15. Our server was accommodating and kind. We also got some history by Mr. Casimir of how the restaurant came to exist, with the prompting of 8 other owners; hence its name. My organization is affiliated with aviation and promotes black aviation employees in career advancement as well as forge community outreach initiatives; aviation ace camps, food drives, international awareness of aviation, education, and assisted recruitment, just to name a few. Ironically Mr. Casimir went to Aviation HS. So this night was organically infused to say the least. We had pre fixe menus. So the appetizers consisted of jerk wings and Caesar salad, and the entrees consisted of salmon, oxtails, and a vegetarian dish; Tour D'Legume. Some dishes came with rice and plantains (green). The food was absolutely delicious. We were hosted downstairs and the space was functional and nicely decorated. We enjoyed the music as well. We were also overly accommodated and were hosted like family. We will be using this venue again. The members of my organization have expressed have nothing short of numerous accolades. We intend on using this establishment to host future events. We are proud to support a black owned establishment who also liaises with the very few and currently far between black owned restaurants in Park Slope, as well as support a local food bank to combat homelessness. I salute Bk9 for being a positive force in the Park Slope community. It is my sincere hope that as your establishment grows, you will harvest great relationships and be a great example in the hospitality business. We have lost and are losing many of our black owned restaurants. Gentrification is very much real. read more

I ordered the Griot, Oxtail, Légumes, Mac and cheese and 2 slices of cake. Definitely will order the Griot again and the Diri Djondjon (Black rice) DELICIOUS!!! The Oxtail was very very salty... not sure why. (maybe that's not the norm) The Mac and cheese was bland. I much prefer the white cheese Mac but that's just me. Overall I will definitely order again. Visited BK9 while in NY for friends reunion. Service was anticipatory and very friendly. Cod and Cassava cake was outstanding, couldn't get enough. Peppered shrimp was great as an appetizer, would order it as dinner as well and eat it over rice. Oxtail empanadas were excellent, I ordered a second round. Cilantro sauce it comes with is addictive, would eat it with many other dishes. Had Rude Boy rum cocktail which was mixed to perfection. The drinks are good- not too strong but it creeps up on you! The food was great. I had the cod and cassava cake and the salmon with callaloo and farro. It was delicious. My boyfriend had the oxtail empanadas and branzino with black rice, he enjoyed it as well. The DJ was on point with the throwback reggae hits. The crowd is mature and slightly upscale. We came as a walk-in and preferred inside, but had to settle for outside dining due to everything being booked for reservations.The outside deck needed to be leveled, as there was a slight unleveling of our table, but aside from that, the food was on point. I'm not sure what was going on the day I visited but we sat for at least 35min before receiving menus or water. 45min before our orders were taken and every other request took 10min. Others complained but I knew the issue was that they only had 1 girl tending to 7 tables at once. Once another server showed up about an hour or so later it got somewhat better but we had to remind them often to fulfill certain requests. I'd also like to call out that no one had masks on outdoors or indoors from what I recall. Not okay! But when released they'd given a middle finger to any kind of covid friendly dining experience (see my Ghent review), we chose to go some place else. BK9's menu is kind of varied. Their West Indian dishes are pretty Americanized. I had the jerk chicken plate, which came with a small portion of rice & peas, plantains (2 slices) and a small helping of cabbage w/ peppers. The plate was $22. As someone used to going to the Jamaican spots in the hood and getting a very generous and authentic helping of the aforementioned dish for no more than $12, I was a little taken aback. But I had to take into consideration the neighborhood I was in. I got a Bajan rum punch ($11), which was mostly ice. I also got a hot toddy. They allow you to chose a liqueur or a whiskey. I got Johnny Walker Black; my friend got Grand Marner. Can't remember how much it was, but I feel like they were $14 or $17 each. The food was decent (not as authentic as I'm accustomed to - the jerk was a bit tame) and the drinks were cool. But they prices way too high, they need to cut it. read more

I was quite disappointed today. my family and I have been here three times before and it's always been very good and delicious. so for father's day I made reservations to treat my husband. I made the reservations for 30 minutes after opening and when we got there they were still setting up. They also told us the kitchen would not open for another 15 minutes, meaning 45 minutes after their posted opening hour. We ordered the banana waffles and were shocked at how's bland and tasteless they were. Nothing like we had remembered. There was no taste of any coconut, passion fruit or rum.
