I've been coming here for a few years now and it's always reliable with its warm attentive staff, great drinks, a big screen and two other tv s to catch a game and most importantly, the FOOD did absolutely delicious. It's a blend of Caribbean and Haitian flavors to contemporary dishes. Always fresh and full of flavor. It never disappoints for comfort food, great brunch or just appetizers. The open kitchen let's you see the Chef and staff carefully putting dishes together. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled by my experience today and had to write as I digest Fried Catfish in creator sauce with cheese grits with football on the screen and old school R n B in the background. Went to the restaurant yesterday for the first time for a graduation dinner. It was about a party of 10 we ordered appetizers pictured as well as drinks and entrees. Ricky was our waiter I must say his customer service was pretty phenomenal he was very attentive and Kstarr was very direct and professional. They showed great teamwork, as we know it makes the dream work and we were very pleased. I enjoyed the whole fried snapper with black rice and cabbage it was very yummy, couldn't finish it but after my to go drink I def devoured it when I got home lol. The mussels appetizer was alright wouldn't get it again, maybe a lil more seasoning or I could have had high expectations but the presentation was cool. The oxtail was a fave with rice and cabbage. Tried the drink with the sorrel and sent it back...had a bitter taste and lacked alcohol unfortunately but thankfully Ricky looked out and replaced it with no problem for the Frozen Rude boy. Had like three of them lol! I would def go back for the drinks Highly suggest the Frozen Rude Boy, Snapper and Oxtail Entree. I heard the jerk wings were good. Everyone loved the Mac and cheese I stayed away due to dairy. Heard the peppered shrimp was good as well. All in all thanks for the great customer service. The griot was okay. The rice was okay. I wish the food was better. The pikliz wasn't very good. Tasted old. The music was pretty good. I would try it again because maybe I just went on an "ok" day. Had to hunt the waiter down to complain about the hair in my food. They rarely check on you. To compensate, they charged half price for my dish. I ate less than half because the freaking hair. My family and I love to support black owned businesses. With this said we expect both good food and good service at minimum. Both were lacking at this restaurant on 07/22/2022. Food: Cabbage had no seasoning, carrots were cold, the fried snapper meal came without onion, green peppers as indicated on the menu, the Callao was not authentic as it was purée and mixed with squash and unrecognizable items and the black rice was hard and tasted like freezer burn. BK-9 is located in the Parkslope area of Brooklyn. How they came up with the name is that 9 friends who grew up together, decided to put their monies together and invest, and that they did. The food is absolutely incredible. Its definitely one of my choices for Caribbean food. I am sure one of them at least has to be from the island of Barbados, because they carry Banks Beer. The first time l went there was for a retirement party for a colleague. The oxtail empanadas were the bomb. Nicely seasoned and you could taste all the herbs and spices. I was there recently for a book signing, two of several authors were colleagues, and so is one of the owners. But, l want to talk about some of the best jerk wings that l have ever had came from BK-9. They were seasoned to perfection. They were spicy and they were cooked on the grill. The menu offers a wide varietyr of dishes that you can't go wrong. Those wings were so good that l placed an order to go. Everytime, l have gone there or drove by they have a full house. There is also a nice sized room downstairs for private functions. The music was pumping, everyone was happy, lots of laughter, nice weather. It was a great way to spend a warm Spring Saturday afternoon. Don't take my word for it, check it out, you will thank me later.lol read more

Reservation for 7. sat at 207. Fine. Not given menus for 10 minutes. Ordered 90 mimosa and our meals at 220. But First round of drinks not served until 247! 2 of my friends had to actually go to the bar and bring us our drinks. The worst service experience of my life. Then for our second drink we had take a carafe ourselves. Ceiling falling apart and no one being served The spot gets 2 stars only because the food was amazing.....once it showed up.otherwise it would be 0 stars. The service sucked because the establishment didn't have enough staff... but the issue was the lack of sympathy and being apologetic. They might have been short and lost a few ppl on the day but at least be apologetic. The hostess sucked. The server sucked. My friends deserved more tip actually. BK9 is a small establishment with art on their walls being sold by local artists. The bold art paired with the island music really sets the scene and vibes for you. When we arrived (group of 6) we were seated near the front of the restaurant near the door. We were offered the back table but members of our group declined because the kitchen was back there as well and there was no partition to provide a real separation between the seating and the kitchen. We settled in and the manager offered us dinner as opposed to lunch because he saw that we came from graduation (sis was in cap & gown). It was a nice but premature gesture. Now if you're from the islands you know a real dinner takes time, with that being said, our food took real time. It would have been helpful if the restaurant offered a complentary bread basket or chips and dip. Our apps came out the same time as our dinner. This defeats the purpose of appetizers. The drinks we ordered were well made. I asked for something sweet and ended up with the Bk9 punch, it was a great choice. My husband had the Hispanola which he also enjoyed. My sister ordered a mojito and my cousin got a pina colada. My parents got fountain drinks and water. When our food came out at last, we all enjoyed our meals. It just became really quiet once we all had our meals because we were too consumed in enjoying our food. The dishes were flavorful, the meat was tender and we could tell that the chef really understood island cuisine especially of the Jamaican/Haitian persuasion. Each meal was well executed and well received but D A M N that food took quite some time to come out! Nonetheless the hospitality was strong from the staff and manager and they apologized for the hold up. We were patient. A gentleman came to refill our waters at one point but the water was warm with no ice. My dad ended up asking for ice. Lastly the manager came out again and expressed his appreciation for our patience as well as apologies for the wait. He popped a champagne in honor of the graduate which was a really quite kind of him. Bathrooms: the restaurant has two single restrooms none dedicated to any specific gender. The restrooms are nice and clean. I can tell that management makes sure the restrooms are up to par. Lastly, our experience of having to wait so long for food was not the experience those around us had experienced. As we waited I observed how the two other groups of graduates with their own parties of 6 or more got their food on time, no hiccups, no slip ups. I feel like because the restaurant is so small and understaffed that offering dinner prematurely without real notice to the kitchen screwed them up. (While waiting a little birdie told us that the establishment has passed through 5 managers thus far so I hope they are still around the next time i am in Brooklyn.) The 3 stars are definitely for our prolonged wait. I hope to be back and actually enjoy myself here because the food is amazing, the staff is gracious, and the vibes are as island as they come. read more

BK9 is a beautiful intimate Caribbean restaurant just a short walk from the Atlantic Avenue MTA station. I visited the restaurant for a friend's birthday brunch and enjoyed the live jazz and DJ. Myself and 2 other friends ordered the Oxtail Hash and were highly dissatisfied with the food.The Oxtail Hash had no taste at all. We were passing the salt and pepper around the table to try to season the dish as much as we could. I wouldn't order it again nor would I recommend it. I also ordered a cocktail that tasted like pure juice. We were lucky that we had such a wonderful waitress who apologized profusely and gave me a new cocktail. We visited here last night around 10 pm for my brothers birthday. Parking was easy to find since it was so late, but I imagine that during the day it's difficult with the paid parking. We find the restaurant easily and walk in. We stand waiting for a table for about 10 min... If I was alone I would've left and found another place to eat, but my siblings are more patient than I am. The place was small, but full of people eating and having fun. We were given a table, but it wasn't decorated with a table cloth or what the other tables had on there's. We requested a table cloth, but were given an excuse about how after a certain time they don't put table clothes or whatever... idek. We still requested one. After that it was mostly smooth sailing. We noticed that the waiter was working by himself to serve and take orders so we were lenient on wait time. He took our orders without any mistakes. We ordered the oxtail, steak, and scallions. Surprisingly our entrees came out before the appetizers. The steak was good in my opinion, but the side mashed potatoes was bland. The best meal at our table was the oxtail which had a great taste along with the rice. The scallions did disappoint because they felt undercooked or over cooked and without insides. The insides were so soft. Our appetizers were the jerk chicken and oxtail empanadas. Those were amazing. The jerk chicken came with two side sauces which were so tasteful. The empanadas were the best part of the night along with the rum drink, i forgot the name but it was so reminding of home (Haiti). I only have photos of the steak meal because we were so hungry by the time the meal came. The dessert was a mistake. We got the chocolate lava cake which seemed like it came out of the box and just put on the table. Overall the experience was good and it was nice to see a Caribbean restaurant up and running well with different ethnicities embracing it. I love the fact that it not only incorporates one Caribbean style but many different ones put together. I came here to enjoy a nice Caribbean meal and watch Saturday night's Haiti v. Canada soccer game. I specifically chose this venue because the owners are Haitian, and I thought it would be a great vibe. When I arrived, one of the bar tv's was playing the pre-game on mute and then went to commercial. I asked the bartender to confirm that they would be playing the game, and she told me "no, because that game is only on FS1 and we don't have that channel. Other people called about the same thing and I told them no." I replied, "I think I saw the pre-game on your tv screen that was turned on to Univision," and basically waited until the game came on to show her and she flippantly said she didn't know. How a Haitian owned restaurant missed this was kind of crazy to me. Also, that night, despite the fact that the venue wasn't even halfway filled, our waitress seemed very rushed to take away our glasses of water and plates, even though the game was still on. She tried to say that "there were people with reservations that were coming," but with a restaurant half filled I don't see how that was a valid reason for a bad attitude. Overall, I thought the food was so so and the general ambiance wasn't worth all the hype, especially when they turned me off about watching a game like the Haitian soccer league. read more

The glorious goat chop over a cassava puree, their star dish that had me raving and recommending BK to so many friends and family, was long gone from the menu. The jerk wings were a bit on the charred side, and its dipping jerk sauce too overpowering. Other items that I tried to order were unavailable on a Saturday night: oxtail empanadas and pepper shrimp. We love seeing minority own business thrive and do our part to help. This place has a " we just don't give a care " attitude and food prep/handling are noticeably lacking. There is an aggressive and unprofessional vibe about the place and seemingly customary satisfaction and comfort are fake. We will never return. That said, we wish them the best of luck. I stopped by this place today during a family outing. I was interested in trying some Haitian food and the menu looked promising. I ordered the oxtail empanadas and the pork griot, my s/o ordered pepper shrimp, jerk chicken empanadas and Mac and cheese. I asked that the pork griot come out a little later so I could finish the appetizer first. I also ordered the BK9 rum punch. The pastry on the empanada was the best part, it was really good. The filling left a lot to be desired. The oxtail was dry, and there was really no sauce. It wasn't giving braised at all. Then there were so many fatty parts in it. I'm aware that oxtail meat has fat but I don't think it belongs in this dish, it was off putting. His jerk chicken emps had fat parts in it too. They didn't taste like jerk whatsoever.. not even a little rude. His pepper shrimp were really good but unfortunately they came out not even lukewarm. When I saw my waitress again I asked that she not even bring out the entree. I felt as if the appetizers were a miss they would def not hit the nail on the head with the entree. Then when the bill came we were charged for two oxtail empanadas. When I mentioned it to the waitress she said that was weird and isn't that what he ordered. I told her no, and as she was picking up his plate she poked around the empanada to see what meat was inside.. that was funny. This place is located right around the corner from the Barclays Center. When I got there it was lunch time but the place was empty which was great for me. Interior: The place is not small, not large, it's medium sized. The interior is very dark which kept it cool in this hot day in June! They have a huge screen(I recall a projector set up) for those who want to watch sports like the World Cup! They also have a TV by the bar. The bar seats about 10 people. The bar is fully stocked, so you can get most things you want. (I took a pic of the drinks menu) Food: The day I was there for some reason they were not making fried chicken or jerk chicken. We ordered the oxtail and jerk pulled pork sandwich. The food didn't take the ten minutes I was told it would take to be prepared, but it wasn't an ridiculous wait time. We probably waited about 20 mins. The food was piping hot, fresh and tasty! I underestimated the spice of the pork- I'm not sure if it was the meat or the slaw that came with it but it packed a nice punch. The salad was tasty, I didn't taste a dressing on it though. The oxtails were good and it was a nice size portion. I feared it would be three small pieces of meat- it was plentiful with enough to take home. I got the Oxtail hash. I wish I could be excited about this dish, but it was lackluster. The meat was tender, yet tasteless! I've never had to ask for salt and pepper for my food at a Caribbean restaurant. I asked for pepper sauce and was given Tabasco sauce. When I asked the male waiter who handed it to me if that was all they had he said he didn't know because he didn't know about pepper sauce. When the waitress came to check in on us I asked her for pepper sauce. She said they had some hot Haitian pepper sauce which I said I wanted. She took the Tabasco sauce off the table and I'm still waiting for this phantom pepper sauce. I ended up eating the food without the sauce and just kept shaking on the salt. My friend really wanted to support a black owned business which is why we trekked over here. The service was so so. The food came out really fast (probably because they forgot to use seasoning). Came here for a friend's birthday dinner recently. We had a prefix menu. It was $50 for a three course meal. Portion sizes where pretty good. The restaurant is very cozy. I had the jerk wings as an appetizer. The oxtail dinner and they had a chocolate cake as a dessert but didnt eat it since I dont eat any dairy products. This restaurant dishes are a mix of Jamaican and Hatian dishes. As for drinks it was pretty decent, i had the drunken lust. Loved the flavor. Would come again read more
