I'm going to outright get it off my chest and say it....I've doubted Z for so long- maybe because they're actually a restaurant at the DoubleTree Hotel. And even when they participate in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, that wasn't enough for me to personally make the 10 minute drive here. But hubby was interested. Only thing I hoped for was to not have an underwhelming experience...and we d...i...d...n'...t. I couldn't possibly write about Bistro Z without mentioning Doubletree's entrance. But imagine skiing down the slopes then later gathering around the fireplace at a grand lodge of some sort......well that's what the entrance looks like with huge wood beams, rock (faux?) walls, stone floor tiles and warm lighting. To be honest- didn't expect all this in Tarrytown. Anyhow...onto Z. When inside, take a left from the hotel's entrance to reach Z. You'll see the bar, host area facing it and spacious Dining area with upholstered chairs. Got there at the tail end of lunch- and at 4pm, we were literally the only ones. Our server Chris was professional and pleasant. Hubby had a Mimosa and I had a well-made Blood Orange Margarita with impressive strength for a hotel restaurant. Lunch menu is brief with something for everybody. Butternut Ravioli Appetizer was divine. At $10 for just 3, I initially felt it was too steep, but figured they were stuffed very nicely with Butternut, topped with Caramelized Onions, Sage thrown in with Grape Tomatoes in a freaking heavenly Cream Sauce. Winner! My Moroccan Lentil Spiced Burger was slamming. Asked our guy about any dijon/mustard/or mustard seed in the Salad and said he'll check in the kitchen. Sure enough, kitchen substituted the mustard for straight up Balsamic and O. This is where they also bumped up their rating- in my opinion! Hubby said his 'Shaved Prime Rib' Sandwich had a nice seasoning to it plus toppings like the Provolone, Mushrooms and Chimichurri Aioli added the flavor he wanted. Problem was, he got a Medium Well- when he wanted Medium Rare. Hubby will have to stress his meat completely rare next time. I was pretty surprised at how good the food was here considering it's in the Doubletree Hilton hotel. We arrived after 9pm on a recent Friday night for a weekend getaway in Sleepy Hollow, and found the kitchen was open until 10pm. Perfect timing as we checked in then grabbed a high table by the bar area. Bartenders offered pleasant service, took our orders, and brought the food to us. The plating, taste, and quality of our meals were more than we expected. Not bad at all. Roast Turkey Wrap - Pepper Jack Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado, Chipotle Aioli, Fries Pan Seared Salmon - Sautéed Spinach & Kale, Lemon Scented Baby Potatoes, Citrus Vinaigrette Since this hotel also hosts many events from marriage receptions to corporate functions they have a full kitchen, and cooks on staff who really put out some good product. Bistro Z also uses locally sourced ingredients. During summer months there is also an outside deck to dine al fresco. Overall, a nice bar and bistro that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Bistro Z is a restaurant that is located on the Hotel Double Tree of Tarrytown; they have a great deal on Groupon. For 2 people 40 $ two STARTERS, two ENTRÉE and one DESSERTS. If you go in the summer, you should take advantage and sit on the outside of restaurant. For the starters we order the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail that is a Traditional Cocktail with Sauce, Lemon & Fresh Horseradish. The App was very delicious the wild shrimp cooked until tender, peeled, deveined and chilled. Served with our zesty House cocktail sauce and lemon wedges. I love the flavor when I dip the shrimp on the sauce. For my entree a had the Grilled New York Strip Steak with some yukon mashed potato, a little seasonal vegetables & crispy fried onions on the top. The 12oz steak was cooked perfectly and the mesa sauce with it was a perfect compliment. My sister had the Pan Seared Salmon with some sautéed spinach & kales, lemon some scented baby potatoes and citrus vinaigrette the salmon had a good taste my sister love the taste of it. I was pleasantly surprised given it was the restaurant attached to my hotel. I fully expected to just have a soup and salad since I was too lazy to venture out...very cold and rainy...but they did have a few decent veggie based options. I did go with the Portabella tower which sat on a corn cake. It wasn't too bad. A little dry, but it worked. Sliced steak with blue cheese and roasted tomatoes $16ish Ordered medium and medium/medium well it was! Juicy tender steak balanced out by the tomatoes and some greens on crunchy ciabatta bread. Completed by crispy fries, yum! Ciabatta bread gets uncrispy as it cools though, so don't play with your food. Duck confit with pureed squash, sautéed spinach and asparagus $18 Duck was cooked well, no gamey taste at all. Squash was for the win, it was creamy and so tasty. A good choice if you stick to the basics It had been a long time since we ate at Bistro Z and based on our previous experience we decided to stick to the basics. We started with the Shrimp Cocktail and Seasonal Salad both of which were perfectly fine and pretty much as expected. We then shared an order of the Steak Frites (medium rare) which was actually delicious - the bone-in rib-eye was perfectly cooked and quite tasty as were the fries. We finished off our meal with a Creme Brulee. Again, solid though not spectacular. We also very much enjoyed their Bistro Bliss - a cocktail of gin, elderflower, cucumber, mint, and lime with a light float of prosecco. The service was quite good and the decor sort of traditional business casual (unsurprising given the restaurant's Doubletree location). Would we eat here without a reason...probably not. But if you are staying at the hotel or want to go for HV Restaurant Week or (as in our case) to get full value for an OpenTable Dining Reward it is completely worth dining here. read more

I am from out of town and we found this place to be a huge disappointment. It was average at best. Totally misrepresented as a fine dining experience. It was not. Turns out it is a shitty little sub par restaurant in a crappy hotel that actually should be reclassified as a no-tell motel. The food was okay and nothing special. Save yourself the trouble and eat somewhere else. Tarrytown has lots of incredible places to eat. This is not one of them. A pleasant and wonderful surprise within the Doubletree Hotel. Needed a place for dinner Friday evening and based on reviews and a $25.00 gift card (our choice - restaurant.com voucher) decided to try the Bistro Z. Busy evening at the hotel so parking was limited close to hotel but plentiful further in their lot. The ambience is about a 6 they try but you are off the lobby of the meeting space however the food and service more than made up for the ambience. Food scale 1-10 a 12 to 15 Service 1-10 about an 8 Grouper special was excellent and the Salmon was also very good. Appetizers were also good. Don't recall what we had. If you are in the area, I would recommend the Bistro Z. Nice draft beer selection as well. read more

Really nice restaurant in the Doubletree hotel. You wouldn't expect this level of quality at a hotel restaurant. We had a great time. I started with the Caesar salad, he had mixed greens. For dinner I had the lamb shank and it was incredible! I was so surprised at how good it was, and how much there was. I wound up taking a lot of it home. He had the NY Strip Steak, and it was prepared perfectly. Service was great. We had coffee but no dessert because we were so full. Our waitress was lovely, very personable, made sure we had everything we needed and certainly made us feel welcome. There was a tool at the next table bitching because the restaurant policy is 30% off a bottle of wine but they don't combine with other discounts. He was using a groupon and caused such a stink that he did get his discount. Honestly, he was the only unpleasant part of the meal. I think he was showing off for his date and if she were impressed by his lack of tact and manners, she deserves him. The dining experience was absolutely a 1 star experience. We didn't get sick from eating here (thankfully) but the service was incredibly slow, bartender showed up late, and the food and drink menus were patchy and often missing items we requested. The food was pretty subpar when it did come out and the mixed drinks were very heavy handed. I might recommend grabbing a drink and listening to the live jazz they have on Saturdays if you're staying at the hotel. The jazz group was great and really made the experience tolerable. read more

So if you read my review last week of Bistro Z and their upcoming Thanksgiving buffet you will be surprised to learn that my family and I ended up actually attending their event. Shocking I know, but let me tell you why. Three days before Thanksgiving I received a call from the executive chef himself apologizing for the issues with my reservation and he promised to do what he could to make things right. In fact, because of my last review they added salmon to the buffet so people could have a fish option. So, reluctantly, I decided to give Bistro Z a second chance, and I was not disappointed. The food was fantastic, the service was great, and they even made some vegetarian dishes for just my family because of their dietary restrictions. Bistro Z really went above and beyond to make my family's experience a pleasant one. In truth, had I not had the issues with my reservation to begin with this review would get 5 stars. It's unfortunate that it took a negative yelp review for Bistro Z to recognize the error of its ways, and the only recommendation I have to Bistro Z to improve is to fire whoever it was that I spoke to prior to the executive chef contacting me. read more

"A beautifully presented experience tarnished by awkward choices." The restaurant itself is tucked into the Double Tree hotel in Tarrytown, as their main food venue for their guests. It has a nice quiet atmosphere with a partition to block the foot traffic of the hotel's hallway. Unfortunately I found the music playing distracting as it was mostly top 40 hits from various years (Hoobastank doesn't quite jive with an expensive night out). Service was great, with each course well paced. The food itself is where I take most of my issue. Each meal we had were all almost great. I began with the Trio of Baby Beet Salad. The tarragon vinaigrette paired beautifully with the beet slices, but having a plate full of Frisee with no larger leafed greens was a bit awkward to eat. For the main course I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass which was cooked well with a crispy skin and nice texture. Downside was that the bass itself came across as bland. The vegetable bed it sat upon on the other had was a beautifully tender assortment, and the lavender honey a subtle but much appreciated note of flavor My dining companion was of similar opinion of her meal; Lobster Bisque Soup, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, finishing with the Beef Tenderloin & Grilled Shrimp. While very nice, and well made, it lacked the final level of finesse I personally look for when spending this much on dinner. Thankfully we had a coupon which took our meal down from $120 to $70. This gets 5 Yelp stars in my book because I was blown away by the experience. I purchased a restaurant.com voucher for this restaurant about a year ago, and decided to night that we should use it before it expires. I personally am not much of a fan of hotel restaurants. They generally have a kitschy vibe and mediocre menu; and being that Bistro Z is located within the Doubletree Hilton, I expected a similar experience. I decided to order a few dishes off the appetizer section to get a sense of the menu. I started with the baked Brie with lingonberry, followed by grilled octopus with white bean purée and asparagus and artichoke ravioli. Everything had real unique flavors and overall quality. I found each dish to be something special and will be looking forward to visiting again soon. And a plus, the atmosphere is lovely! read more

Our second visit to Bistro Z. * Food is delivered late or cold * Steaks are delivered overdone (well vs. medium) or underdone (rare vs. medium), but never right (twice). * Wait staff, though accommodating, attitude seems "frustrated" from the start. Sighs are audible. On our second visit, I ordered Baked Brie as an appetizer. When delivered, nice presentation. But, it was cold. Baked brie should not be served with a chill. I told our waiter, who apologized, and took the dish back for replacement. Meanwhile, my wife was left waiting, having already finished her appetizer. On second delivery of a brand new Baked Brie presentation: Exactly the same. Slightly warm on the edges. Cold in the middle. I rejected this a second time. I asked for a Caesar Salad as a replacement. Meanwhile, my wife was left waiting even longer. The Caesar Salad was acceptable, but really without note and unworthy of $8. I was eating in a hurry now. For my entree, I ordered the strip steak, done Medium. When, finally, delivered - it was Rare and Cold. Not only that, the meat was extremely tough. It was all I could do to cut a piece to eat. My wife and I noticed other folks who ordered the same steak who were really applying strong effort to cut their own. My wife ordered the Chilean Sea Bass "Chilean Sea Bass w/Braised Fennel, Purple Potatoes, Butternut Squash in a Lavender Honey & Truffle Oil Broth." It was delivered DRY on a plate and without the Lavender Honey & Truffle Broth as it was listed. She asked the waiter, who said, "Yes, it's a new recipe." At this point, We were, both, completely disgusted with the entire experience. I could have very easily sent my steak back for another, since it was bloody red and cold, though ordered Medium. My wife could have done the same. But, we declined to do so, since we were already at more than 90 minutes into this bad experience. We just gave up and struggled through to get away. For being a hotel at the edge of the Hudson river I was quite impressed by the menu choices and the steak special, which I did not have btw. And we $3 beers on tap you just can't go wrong. Choices are Stella, Captain Lawrence, Shock Top, Bud Light, and some other premium brews which I have never seen anywhere for that cheap! I had the Caesar Salad and the Pumpkin and Sage ravioli which comes as and app also. Quite good! Bistro Z is a little restaurant located inside the Doubletree in Tarrytown, but it could certainly be a stand alone restaurant and do quite well in my opinion. We called kind of late on a weeknight and asked what time they were open until and what time the kitchen closed and they told us to come on over and that the kitchen did close in less than an hour. I was skeptical because I didn't feel like being rushed through a meal but that was not the case at all. The little one was thrilled to have a cheeseburger (there's a pretty decent kid's menu) and actually said it was one of the best that had been consumed recently although that could have just been hunger talking. I had the crab cake appetizer which is big enough for two people with two generous sized crab cakes and a large salad which I'm told was delicious but I gave mine away. The crab cake was not my favorite crab cake ever but others at my table did enjoy it. I tend to prefer lump crab meat and this was more of the shredded type. It was good, just not my favorite. My entree more than made up for it. Myself and the hubby had the special of the evening a crusted venison loin with creamy farro and swiss chard. I absolutely loved it. The venison was cooked perfectly and the creamy farro was some sort of version of a risotto but with one of my favorite grains. The swiss chard was a little on the salty side but I still ate everything on my plate and was very happy. Others at the table had steak (they loved it) and others had the sea bass crusted with crabmeat which received raves. Dessert was also enjoyable however the portion sizes are a little strange. One member of the party had some chocolate cake thing that looked more like fudge but it was very small. My brother had the Doubletree ice cream sandwich since after all their cookies are supposed to be amazing and he loves them. I had the sweet potato and maple creme brulee. It was more like sweet potato pie filling with no crust and it was a huge portion. I couldn't even finish half but it was satisfying. All in all this is not a bad place if you can get past obviously being inside a hotel with children running screaming through the hallway just outside the restaurant. I came here for restaurant week in March with a coworker. When you think of a bistro, you think swanky, something small and quaint, possibly half outside and half inside. This was inside of a hotel and lacked any luster. The food was bleh. My coworker had: double cream pumpkin bisque, lobster fettucini, and dark chocolate ganache. I had: sweet corn and porcini beignet, brick grilled poussin, and apple crepe a la mode. The double cream pumpkin bisque and the apple crepe a la mode were the only good tihngs. The lobster fettucine was flavorless and the dark chocolate ganache, way too rich without having anything to break up the chocolatey flavor. The beignets were just too much dough and not enough of anything else and the poussin was dried out and the sides to it were lack luster as i said before. The service wasn't that great either. Overall the experience wasn't the best. Glad I didn't spend real money and just spent restaurant week money on it. read more

Originally came here with a groupon (look out for that) and had such a pleasant experience that I was back within 2 weeks. The specials are also delicious. Really enjoyed the gnocchi, potato soup, braised short rib sandwich. Wasn't crazy about their fancy grilled cheese however. Don't be fooled By the lack of ambience in the hotel lobby,- where the dining room in general . we had a table directly in front of the large fireplace-perfect for the eight of us. The food was beautifully plated, and excellent; gigantic and delicious shrimp cocktail , duck ravioli was sublime, octopus was good and not chewy , Staff was attentive and lovely. we could even hear one another over the normally overwhelming din, another welcome surprise. I had the NY Strip Medium Rare and it was cooked wonderfully. I was delicious!!! The side of the mash was a bit basic/bland. The lobster ravioli stater was really good as well. My wife enjoyed the french onion soup but we were both surprised by the lamb which she order medium but came out rare. Don't know how that happened, but the staff responded very well to it and the manager( or what appeared to be the manager) came to us very apologetically and allow my wife to get an alternative dish complimentary and made sure a new order of the lamb was made correctly. First time here and enjoyed my meal, the service, and the ambiance is nice and relaxing. The waitress was very helpful with my gluten allergy and was able to adjust my entree to be gluten free. I enjoyed the scallops and shrimp entree with mashed potatoes. I would've liked to have more scallops/shrimp (2 of each) for the price of the meal. My boyfriend enjoyed the burrata ravioli. My party of 4 we're the only guests seated in the restaurant lunch when we arrived, yet, after ordering, it took over 15 min to bring the complimentary bread, and over 20 min for our food to get to the table after ordering. I don't know what is with all the "meh" and mixed reviews. My fiancé and I had a great dining experience. This place is defiantly a gem, started off with the French onion soup and crab cakes. The soup has a nice layer of melted soft crusty cheese and the flavor was very nice. The crab cakes were great and served with a nice mesclun salad. For entree I had the scallops, they were big beautiful sea scallops with so much flavor and not to mention served with a white bean gratin and escarole. My fiancé had the (I think ribeye) steak with mashed, asparagus, and two thick onion rings. Wow what piece of meat that was! Cooked and seasoned perfectly! Knocked us right out of the water. Also had the salted pecan caramel cheesecake. --- wow!! That's all I have to say about that. All in all, the food is great, the servers are respectful. And the menu is original and creative. Keep in mind it is in a hotel lobby so don't expect a river view, or a ultra modern decor. However, the hotel is beautiful and the lobby was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Highly recommend this lovely restaurant with impeccable service and delicious food served by knowledgeable people. Had grilled octopus salad which was a very large portion of 2 legs on greens. The octopus was incredibly tender and flavorful. By the time my seafood risotto arrived, I was pretty sated but managed to pick out most of the lobster, scallops, and shrimp from the creamy risotto. My friend had a Caesar salad and then a well done steak with fresh shitakes and mini potatoes. Well done steak that is still tender is hard to pull off but they managed. We were full but the dessert menu tempted us with a lemon tart and a tartufo. If I lived here, I would be a regular. This visit left much to be desired. First off, the glasses were dirty and our waiter was going to serve us our drinks in them. Of course, I asked for clean glasses. Next, our waiter did not seem professional, as he had food on his face (perhaps from lunch) and didn't acknowledge us. When we would ask him for something, he just walked away, rather than saying a simple "okay." Also, we had to ask another waiter to bring bread and olive oil to the table. The fried calamari was seasoned well, and the spicy marinara paired perfectly with it. We liked how there were jalapeños and bell peppers fried into the mixture of calamari, and the addition of the dusting of Parmesan cheese on top. It gave it a nice saltiness. We ordered a salad that was mediocre and it was $8 (mixed greens and heirloom tomatoes). I ordered the pan-seared salmon and asked for no onions with the veggies, and then proceeded to receive a kale and spinach mixture with so many diced onions I couldn't even pick them out! I was appalled. Additionally, my sister ordered the Parmesan gnocchi and they appeared to be not fully cooked all the way through. The potato dough was a bit gummy. The gnocchi itself did not have Parmesan taste to it; a few slices of cheese was simply placed on top of the dish. The only saving grace on that plate was the mushrooms in the wine sauce, which is a classic pairing. The menu description states the dish would contain wild mushrooms, but they were just regular white mushrooms. I guess that was the restaurant owner's way of making it sound fancy so customers would order the dish. The asparagus in it was way overcooked and weren't even green anymore; they were this very unappealing grayish color. In addition, there were charred tomatoes mixed in with the gnocchi and it was bracingly acidic when mixed together with the wine sauce. Overall, I do not think we will be back.
