What an amazing experience in a small town. My fiancé took me here for my birthday dinner and I could not have asked for a better evening. Every single aspect of the evening was perfect from the food to the service. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel welcome and special. The food was spectacular; unique, delicious and well thought out. The staff was extremely knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. We started with three tapas, a bottle of wine, and we each had an entree. Everything we ordered was absolutely spectacular. Thank you so much for such a memorable evening. We will be back! I've come here many times usually during a special occasion or an intimate date. The ambiance of the place is great for a small gathering and the wait staff is amazing. The food is always delicious. I suggest getting multiple tapas to share with your party and try out the "Cazuela de Mariscos" or the paella. They have a great wine list as well. You won't be disappointed. read more

Normally I love the Connecticut shoreline restaurants. We stopped by Bistro. The area is very quaint. We had dinner with friends. We ordered and waited, and waited, and waited. 30 plus minutes for the first dinner to come out. Not too bad I guess because we had drinks while we waited. But each dinner was served at least 10 minutes apart. The restaurant was not busy at all so I didn't understand the delay. The staff apologized but there were 8 of us and literally 45 minutes went by between the delivery of the first and last dinner. Needless to say no one started until they were all on the table so now it was cold. Every five minutes a dinner was delivered. No acceptable when 5 of the 8 meals were the same. Since there were only two two tops at the restaurant eating there should have been no delay. Very weird. My friends meal had a sheet metal screw mixed in with his meal. Accidental obviously but when we showed the waitress she was floored. The manager never came over to the table. Finally we approached him. He said he didn't know where it came from. The duct work in the kitchen has sheet metal screws inside them within the exhaust systems which this restaurant has. The manager / owner was also cold and unapologetic and didn't even take my friends meal off the bill. The manager, I believe was French and he couldn't care less. read more

A friend and I just had lunch at Bistro Basque. It was her first time there and my bazillionth. Neither of us were disappointed. She had a glass of Cabernet. I had Bordeaux. The tapas menu is the way to go. We shared cod croquettes, lamb ravioli, green salad, cauliflower and shrimp. Then we finished lunch by splitting the bread pudding. Oo la la. Bistro Basque has it goin ON! It's the perfect place for dinner or just drinks. As a local, it's great to have a place so close that's unique and delicious! WIne list is great, short and to the point. You will find what you're looking for by the glass or by the bottle. They are chosen perfectly for the Basque style food you'll be enjoying. Their Cabernet by the glass is my absolute favorite. The perfect red! And I'm not a big Cab person. For apps I recommend the croquetas de bacalao, the crab cakes, + the boudin aux pommes. A delectable trio! For dinner the skirt steak or the seafood paella- delish! For dessert- if you are a chocolate fan, the pave au chocolat. I have gone there some late nights just for that! It's usually pretty busy, and not a very big restaurant. You should get a reservation, especially on a w/e. read more

Rude. I invited five of my friends our for a drink and appetizers. I chose Bistro Basque for its location, bar and tapas. We walked into find 3 people sitting at the bar, and three or four tables of patrons in the dining room. Knowing we were only in for a drink and apps, we selected the two tables in front of the bar. We sat ourselves (as no one greeted us) and I noticed the three gents behind the bar looking at us and whispering--they seemed bothered that we entered (it was about 9pm). We sat, service-less for at least 5 minutes. Finally, one of the men came to our table and asked if we had a reservation. Really??? The place was empty! This man (I'm not going to call him a waiter or server because he didn't wait and hardly served) took our drink order, handed us the drinks in an unfriendly impolite manner and disappeared. We wanted some food! When we finally were able to track him down, he said we needed to hurry because the kitchen was closing. We all felt he was purposely not coming back because he didn't want us to order food. The drinks were fine. The food was fine. But the lack of service was completely off-putting. Travelled to the area with family and planned on going to a nearby restaurant, but decided to stop by here instead due to the weather. It ended up being a great decision. Service was top notch. Our server was Juan and he had excellent knowledge of the menu and wine and was exceedingly accommodating. The menu was good sized and the food was delicious. Can't say I've ever been so disappointed by the flavor, or rather lack-thereof, by a meal. I went here last Saturday night (7/30) with a girlfriend, and after just sitting down the waiter came over to ask if we would like any vino. I said, "Well, I just sat down so I'm going to need a second to look at the menu," and based on the man's reaction you would think I was the rudest customer he'd ever served. After a few minutes of perusing the menu, he came back to take our drink order again but barely spoke to me. While most of this review will be negative, I do have to give serious props to whomever it is that selects their wines. I had the tempranillo and OH my goodness it was truly heaven, and my friend's cotes-du-rhone was equally pleasant. After another glance at the menu I spied a salad and a small plate that sounded divine, specifically the endive salad and the escargot. We ordered, and the timing of our plates was appropriate. That being said, the salad was completely flavorless minus the two poached pears, and I have never had escargot quite so boring. The menu described them as being cooked and served in a garlic butter and herb sauce, but I honestly tasted nothing. I don't believe in salting my food at restaurants because I believe the customer is meant to enjoy what the chef has prepared, and yet I was forced to ask for some salt so I could try to bring life to this bland dish. That concludes my review of my dinner. However, I do need to say something about the bartender that was working that evening. Towards the end of our meal, a woman walked in alone to the bar and ordered a French martini. Now, I am a bartender and have been one for about four years now, and French martini is a classic cocktail with only three ingredients: vodka, chambord, and pineapple juice. Instead of saying he did not know how to make that drink or looking it up quickly, he told her they did not have the ingredients for the drink (listing Aperol as one of them), and convinced her to order a drink off of their cocktail menu. We ordered our drinks and then sat at our table and watched as several other groups of "lucky diners" were seated, had their orders taken and were brought bread and silverware. After sitting like this for about 15 minutes I put money down and left the place. Some guy speaking in broken english followed me outside and began to berate us for leaving. I had the misfortune of being recommended this place this past Thursday to celebrate my anniversary. I figured it would be a nice relaxing atmosphere at 6:30pm. There was only one server for the entire dinning room and from the beginning he was clearly flustered. It started when we requested a pitcher of sangria for our tapas ( makes sense ). Denied, " we don't sell pitchers" I was told. Ok fine but then the red flags started when the server was pretty clueless when it came to the food and being unable to make any recommendations or even explain the differences of the food. So we chose the best would could from the tapas selection. We knew we were in trouble when the very first two items we selected have not been on the menu since the winter and made a small menu even smaller. Huge red flag when an owner is too lazy to update a menu. As we scattered to select different options the server Was clearly impatient. Food: After randomly selecting a few items from what we considered to be a poor menu selection at a tapas restaurant we actually enjoyed the food. It was by no means worth the money we paid but it was at least tasty enough. The tapas were pretty good and the main dish (churrasceria) sufficed . However midway through dinner our sangria and water went dry and we were never approached about refills . Problems : We decided we were full and wanted to pack the rest. Being patient that I am I waited patiently for the server who flew back and fourth between all tables except mine . Empty plates , glasses, and body language of clearly being done. I waited approximately 25 minutes until I decided enough was enough. I saw another man doing menial tasks while the main server was busy. I asked him for a manger to which he replied I am the owner . I explained to him how disappointed I was with the experience and service especially being a special occasion and my expectations for a nice romantic evening . He paused awkwardly started to turn away and simple shrugged his shoulders saying "I'm sorry", .... that was the last straw for us. I asked for the check and we prepared to leave. Just before leaving they came with a cake and water , im guessing the cake was for my anniversary but it was too little too late. The service, was terrible and the accountability was worse. I am by no means a difficult person having been servers ourselves we totally understand good and bad service. When I am paying a premium price for food I can get cheaper elsewhere I expect better service worthy of being considered fine dinning. This was not that . This place and food was par and service was abysmal. I've read review about how good this place was but ultimately it comes down to service and making sure guests are pleased with there experience . My partner and I went here for dinner a few months ago and had a strange experience. My partner was greeted by a man, who spoke to her in French and then made an awkward comment about her accent when she responded in remedial French. It didn't seem that he was joking. I was standing next to her, but was never acknowledged. In spite of this introduction, having heard good reviews about the food, we decided to stay. We were then seated in the cramped dining area where the waiter had difficulty maneuvering between the tables and the tables were so close we felt we were dining communally. Our neighbors were so close that it almost seemed appropriate to include them in our conversation. The waiter was polite at first, but then started asking very invasive and personal questions. He asked where we live, do we live together, what do we do for work, how much money do we make, and what type of car do we drive. He lingered an inappropriate time at the table as we kept redirecting the conversation back to the menu. As we departed the restaurant the same man who greeted us earlier resumed the conversation in French, which neither of us understood. At that point, he was standing in the doorway and blocking our exit. It seemed like an eternity before he stood aside and we ran out of the door. We had both had meals in Tapas restaurants in various cities and enjoyed them (I had fantastic tapas at Barcelona Wine Bar in Norwalk, for one). How do you make a flavorless flan? Ask the staff at Bistro Basque. But, let's start at the beginning... Read the reviews, have friends who love it, thought it would be great for a Saturday night pre-Valentine's Day "date night" with my wife. Karma looked to be shining down on us - the only parking spot available on the street was literally RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT. It doesn't get any better than that. Made it in, right on time at 6:30. After a brief conversation to sort out the reservation, they seat us at a cute little two-spot in the hidden front right corner of the main dining room. Score! Or so we thought... We picked out 4 tapas to share. I'd read that they were more appetizer-sized that tapas-sized, so that looked to be plenty of food. And it was. The waiter offered to bring them out two at a time. Sounded good to us. We ordered a glass of red sangria and one of white sangria - both very good. The first two tapas, which arrived at the table about 15 minutes after we were seated, were the crab cakes and the cauliflower gratin with serrano ham. Both were fantastic. I can't imagine a better version of either one. Then, we waited... And waited... And waited... Thank god we still like having a conversation after having been married almost 9 years. Finally, one full hour after the first plates had been cleared, my wife and I decided to swivel in our chairs and stare at our waiter while he attended to another table. He got the hint, came over quickly, and said "I'll go hunt someone down in the kitchen to find out about your food." What??? You're blaming the kitchen? This one's on you, buddy. It's your responsibility to make sure that the kitchen sends out our food at acceptable intervals. I've worked in restaurants...I know how it's supposed to be. Whatever. Less than 5 minutes later, the 3rd dish shows up, with the 4th not far behind. These were the piquillo peppers stuffed with duck and chorizo, and the lomo, which were like little open-faced sandwiches of pork, cheese, pepper and olives. Both were very good. Not quite as good as the first two, and not worth waiting more than an hour for, but definitely good. The plates are cleared, and my wife takes a powder. While she's gone, the waiter drops by to ask "Are you ready for the check?" What??? Um, you serve dessert and coffee, and you're not asking me if I want any? So, I tell him that, no, what we'd like to do is see the dessert menu. She returns, and then the dessert menus make an appearance. Except for the flan, which some people here had liked, nothing jumps out at us. I mean, rice pudding with fruit leather? Really? So chewy now pairs well with slightly chewy?? We settle on one flan, and tell him to bring the check with it. There was no telling how long it would take to get out of here without combining the requests. A few minutes later, the flan arrives with the check. Looks nice - amber pool of caramel, firm flan, mint sprig. I take the first bite. Nothing. Have I finally blown out my taste buds? Did the tapas blow out my taste buds? My wife tells me to try the liquid caramel. It's like caramel flavored vitamin water. Water with a hint of something that may or may not remind you of caramel. I take a second bite. Now I'm sure. Completely flavorless. I ask her, fearing that I've lost it. Surprisingly, she agrees. Two dessert hounds agree to put their spoons down and let sleeping flans lie. I want to tell the waiter and have it removed from the bill. She worries about the fact that we don't have the supplies to hunker down for such a lengthy campaign. I'm insistent. She shrugs. I tell the waiter about the tasteless flan. He says, and I swear to everything that I hold dear that this is true, "I'm not surprised. We have an apple dessert that doesn't taste like anything either." That splat was the sound of the kitchen staff being thrown under the bus. He offers us a replacement dessert or a drink, but we decline. He then says, hold your breath for this one, "I wish you'd told me before so that I could've taken it off your check." Wow. First, thanks for the guilt trip, buddy. Second, how can I tell you about how bad it is before you bring the check if you brought them both AT THE SAME TIME. I tell him to take it off the check. He takes it off the check. We pay and leave. Car's still there - phew. How to sum this one up: 4 star savory food and cozy ambiance, service 1-2 stars, desserts to be avoided. If you don't believe me, just ask your waiter. read more

I created an account just to review this place. I made a reservation for valentine's day without knowing (or being told on the phone) that they would be serving a prix fix menu. That in-of-itself is not an issue, but the price point -- $60 per person -- was ridiculous when taking into account quality of food, service, and overall location of the establishment. Including a drink we each had, the total bill was ~$150 (w/o tip). To me, it felt akin to surge pricing a la Uber. The food was so-so. I had the paella and my wife had braised short-ribs. Appetizers came out rushed and the wait-staff was new and uncoordinated. We used to frequent Bistro Basque several years ago and had been impressed by the culinary ingenuity and finesse at this establishment. Things have changed. Firstly, the service here is now slow and gruff. The welcome was cold and they forgot to bring us extra bread and menus until we reminded them for the 3rd time. Worst of all is the food - we ordered the brussel sprouts, which were simply boiled and served with a gross looking ranch. Not very culinary or tasty. Chillis could have done them better. The artichokes were equally bland. Deep fried raviolis were saltless and oily. The shrimp soaked in a sauce that was straight out of a bottle from your average supermarket was worst of all. The only decent thing was the mushrooms. I am surprised they call themselves a bistro and serve people this atrocious food. Save your hard earned money for elsewhere. read more

After a very uninteresting afternoon spent in Greenwich, my friend and I were looking for somewhere new to grab a bite. Months ago, a friend had mentioned he worked at Bistro Basque, and lucky for us the bistro popped into my head as we were driving back up 95. As we drove through quaint little Milford center, we passed a loud, hard-partying outdoor restaurant...ick. Coming around the corner, we found the saffron hued entrance to Bistro Basque. The bartender, Andrew(aforementioned friend)was still setting up, but welcomed us in. The cozy bar was right in front, surrounded by well worn leather seats, and perfectly french bistro tables and chairs. We were happy to set to set up shop right there, when Andrew suggested we see the back. Walking through the small, but well appointed dining room, he lead us to the open air dining space. It was breathtaking. Wood, and flowers, and tiny little nooks of romantic tables for two...simply gorgeous. It was also perfectly protected form the blazing afternoon sun. It had been a long, hot day, so I jumped right in with a Daytrader, one of Andrew's specialty cocktails-a slightly esoteric blend of tequila, Aperol, rose-lime syrup and bitters. The side of my glass was glittering with salt, a perfect juxstaposition to the deliciously bitter libation. I downed the whole thing while my dining partner was still purusing the wine list! His only gripe, if I dare call it that, was they didn't offer any Basque wines to accompany the food. He ended up choosing a wonderfully dry Muscadet(imported by Joe Dressner) to accompany what was to be an amzazing journey of Basque region delights. We historically love ordering lots of tapas as opposed to entrees, and BB did NOT disappoint. We began with artichokes in a white wine caper sauce, Shrimp in garlic, and a white bean and clam cassoulet. The artichoke dish was bright and acidic-warm, but not mushy, and I wanted to lick the plate. The clam and white bean dish was so simple, yet so full of flavor, I could've enjoyed another bowl. My dining companion and I were in heaven- finally another restaurant with quality, cared about ingriedients. The shrimp arrived in a small metal bowl, covered in an amazing demi-glace-more bread, please! Our next round was escargot in Pernod, Brussel Sprouts with a gorgonzola bechamel, and duck confit in mustard sauce with pickled red cabbage and plums-it was exactly as it sounds-outrageously decadent. The escargot were served with ratatouille veggies, and I found this dish the hardest to share. I will order it every time I visit. The duck was complex, and bursting with flavor. I wasn't over the moon with the sprouts, but had no trouble eating them! The staff was knowledgeable and careful, friendly and discreet. While we were the first diners to arrive, many others followed soon after us, also wanting to enjoy their perfect outdoor space. It's places like this that make me sad that I'm not sitting there today, or any other day for that matter. While you may not find yourself in Milford often, make it a destination. Best restaurant in Milford! Love everything about Bistro Basque from ambiance, to service, to food! The cheese plate is fantastic, although it has gotten a tad smaller since the menu was updated. My favorite cheese on the plate is a goat, and I believe its cana de cabra. Other apps I love are Paquequitos & duck confit. Was really disappointed when the took the stuffed paquillos off menu ) : For dinner, the specials are always fantastic, including the Dorado or Oxtails when available. On regular menu, I always get the lamb or the duck. We usually like to eat in the bar area. Definitely a must try! read more

My friends and I went to Milford on a day trip. We were walking around the beach and asked one of the nearby residents for a restaurant recommendation and he mentioned this place. We entered the restaurant and were immediately greeted by the owner and given a seat in the middle of the restaurant. Considering that it was a PACKED Friday night, we were genuinely pleased that we were seated so quickly. I ordered the seafood paella and it was scrumptious. It was the BEST paella I have ever had. The portion was large, so I took half of it home and it was equally delicious as leftovers. The staff were attentive, quick, and even witty. We had a great time talking to them and the owner. We live on the east side of New Haven and don't often venture to the west side. After completing an assignment in Milford, we decided to try Bistro Basque in downtown Milford. We were directed to a table in an outside courtyard and instantly felt like we were dining in a small village in Europe. The food was excellent, I had the best paella ever and my wife had the red snapper special, the service was superb. It was a gastronomical delight. I'm giving it five stars on one premise - you have an educated palette and are judging on the quality of the food and the ambience - not price. Look, if you have a girl and you want to take her to a "fancy" restaurant and you want her to know you have some money to spend on her - but she's more of an "Olive Garden" kind of girl - save your money - because neither one of you will appreciate it. Take her to Bridge House or Johnny Rays because it's what I call "Neauveau Gumbah" fare. So disappointed in Bistro Basque this weekend! Last week I called to make a reservation for a date night for Sunday, April 29. The employee took all of the reservation information and said they would see us on Sunday. When my husband and I showed up for our dinner, we discovered the restaurant was closed. Knowing that the cafe next door was owned by the same people, we decided to inquire. The bartender said, very casually and not in any way apologetically, that Bistro Basque was not open but the cafe used the same kitchen so we would be fine. This felt very much like a bait and switch. The atmosphere at the cafe is not the same romantic, date night feeling as the restaurant next door. Needless to say, we did not stay. There are other options for romantic dinners in Milford with food that is as good or better. Not sure when we will return to Bistro Basque as we can't trust what a reservation there means. read more

We went to Bistro Basque with a group of 6 this weekend and it was fantastic! They had no trouble seating our group comfortably despite the somewhat limited space inside and the food was just awesome. This was some of the finest seafood we've had and the preparation was that of an upscale NYC restaurant (and it feels like one inside).
