Not good. We use to frequent here years ago and the food was AMAZING ~ like the BEST we've ever had. Came back 1 month ago and it was just ok. Tonight we came in on a Friday ~ tables are really close together ~ NYC style and it wasn't that busy. It was hot and humid inside and it's still April. Food was just ok. Service felt super rushed. And the food wasn't great. Very small wine list (years ago it was massive with great wines). Waiter kept pushing us along as to turn the table but clearly no reservations were behind us. Just wouldn't ever come back unfortunately. This use to be a very busy, special and unique restaurant and now it blends in to the background. So many other choices within a few miles for a night out. This place will not last unless they make significant changes. Tapas were subpar ~ tapas are small in general, but these were very very small. For a Spanish themed restaurant there isn't complimentary olives and cheese. In fact, no olives at all. The meals we had were a chicken dish which had too much sauce, tacos which were tiny, signature dish is paella which tasted like it was made days ago and very dry. Desserts were unimpressive and wine list leaves a lot to be desired. Spain has amazing wines, they're just not here. Skip it and go to New Haven. read more

Do not come here if you are in a group of all women. I had the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant with the French owner, who repeatedly made incredibly rude comments to us throughout our entire dining experience. It began when we were waiting for a table and had already been told there was one available outside. He came up to us from outside of the restaurant as we waited and began miming (?) for us. We had absolutely no way of knowing who he was or that he was the owner, and we all assumed he was a strange man trying to harass us so we ignored him. When he realized we weren't amused, he told us he was the owner and that he wouldn't seat such serious people, and began talking to the people behind us in line. We were quite confused, but when he began to lead us into the restaurant, we mentioned we would prefer to eat outside and had already been told there was a table available. He turned around and made a comment to us about how if we weren't careful he would seat us in the kitchen. It was a joke, but rude nonetheless. Finally, we were seated and our waiter had taken our drink order when the owner passed by our table and meowed at us, yes, meowed. Unsure if it was meant to be a harmless joke, but I got the sense he was trying to call us catty for being taken aback at his behavior. Finally, on our way out, he mocked us for wearing masks to walk back through the restaurant. He sarcastically joked that we were "all going to die of covid." Needless to say, we were absolutely appalled by the rude and completely inappropriate attitude he displayed and will not be coming back. The group (three women) couldn't help but feel that he would not have been entitled to such an attitude if we had had a man with us, and that he saw us as an easy target for his borderline harassment. I'm giving this restaurant four stars because despite the absolutely disgusting behavior of the owner, the Spanish head waiter who served us was completely delightful, talking to us in Spanish, being perfectly attentive and funny, and overall an amazing waiter. The food was also delicious. We ordered the carnitas and vegetable tacos as well as the calamari and cod stew (which we couldn't recommend more). Personally I will never come back to this establishment, but if you can avoid the French owner, it'll be a delightful experience. read more

Very disappointed in our visit - my husband has gone here in the past and said it was amazing many years ago. Bistro Basque is kind of sharing a kitchen with El Barrio, which was interesting. The El Barrio cocktail menu is offered, which is nice especially considering Basque has an extremely limited wine menu - one of each type only. The drinks were good, the service was great - unfortunately the food was not. We started with an abysmal cheese plate which was 3 different cheeses, a few grapes and a strawberry. For the entrees - We could only compare it to a slightly better done catered wedding dish. My husband got the lamb, unfortunately no flavor and served with what looked like frozen veggies and au gratin potatoes. I got the skirt steak which was equally flavorless and served with the same frozen veggies and these extremely dry fried potatoes. It came with what I think was supposed to be a chimichurri sauce, but it was just a bland oil that tasted more like a salad dressing. We were really excited to try Bistro Basque, but we will not be returning. The price we paid was painful for a few drinks and wedding food - no thanks! read more

I don't often give a 5 star review but Bistro Basque deserves one. We started with the octopus and squid tapas. Octopus can taste like rubber bands if not done well - I'm pleased to report that the chef knows his fish and did it perfectly. We followed this with an endive salad which was one of the best I ever had. Then we had the monkfish stew which was to die for - wonderful! Service was friendly, helpful and a plus to the dining experience. If you're within 50 miles of Milford, don't hesitate to try Basque Bistro. read more

Food: I would personally consider the food here nothing above average. My last visit, I believe I had the Piaya dish which I'd give a rough 4/10. By and large, everything I sampled including appetizers were leagues behind what I've experienced at other local establishments including Barcelona New Haven. Again, nothing special particularly when relative to cost. Service: Horrible, slow, and rude. Have heard other similar feedback from a few friends, so I would imagine it was not a one-off thing. Overall, I would not go here again. The food was nothing special and I left pretty frustrated with the service. For the $180 I spent for my girlfriend and I, I'd rather head over to Barcelona or somewhere similar for a quality meal. read more

Boy were we disappointed. We spent a Valentine's lunch at Bistro Basque based on the solid reviews. First thing we were hit with was a $60 prix fixe menu for lunch which we were not told about when I made the reservation. While that's steep for lunch in Milford we had heard such good things we said okay. The menu started with 3 shared tapas - a salmon tartare which we didn't care for, shrimp which were fine (not special though) and the cauliflower dish. While the cauliflower dish was good - it is the same thing I make in my cauliflower gratin. Good but not the raves we had read here. My husband had the quite delicious paella - plentiful and flavorful. I had the grossly oversalted short ribs. No more need be said about that. I had the pear tart - a square of puff pastry with a small smear of pastry cream (very small) and a poached pear on top. Terrible. The chocolate mousse my husband had was good. We had to ask for coffee and tea although we were asked 3 times if we wanted more wine even though our glasses were half full. Conclusion - VERY overpriced for what we got - some good dished, some okay dishes, and some terrible dishes. Mediocre service pushing liquor. We won't be back - not quite an epic fail but a major one. read more

Wow! City flavor in a small town locale! I was seriously impressed with this place. The only reason I'm holding out on the last star is because I can't give a place 5 stars if I've only been there once. I just can't. The main idea of Bistro Basque is French-Spanish fusion cuisine with a certain European vibe; dim lighting (and by dim, I mean barely lit, but I like that), dark accents, acordian-inspired wordly tunes in the background and a waitstaff with accents to boot. We were greeted with a smile and seated promptly for our 6 pm Saturday evening reservation for seven people. The waiter introduced himself and the specials for the evening before taking our drink order. The $33 bottle of Spanish white we ordered was delivered right away and poured for all to enjoy. ¡Excellente! We perused the appropriately sized menu while enjoying our wine and we all settled on three tapas dishes to share (Lomo, Boudin aux Pommes and a stuffed pepper dish I don't remember the name of) and all our main entrees. My only qualm with the menu and the specials (and for most, this would not be an issue) was that they comprised almost entirely of seafood (I, unfortunately for me and fortunately for you, do not enjoy any of the fruits of the ocean) - there were only four non-seafood options: duck confit, skirt steak, rack of lamb and filet mignon; about 75% of the menu was de la mer. So my land-loving choices were quite limited. However, for what the menu lacked in terra firma variety, it more than made up for in quality. These dishes were amazing! I can now honestly say that good food DOES in fact exist outside the confines of any major metropolis! I'm a changed woman. The steaks were perfectly done, the duck was a delicately balanced culinary act of both meat and fat, the lamb melted off the bone. The vegetables were steamed and lightly seasoned to perfection and the tapas did not disappoint. The service matched the food, all the staff were friendly, attentive and informative. And upon casually hearing it was a party member's birthday, they turned that person's desert into a celebration, unprompted by us, by putting a candle inside and bringing it out singing "Happy Birthday". I always glance to the side in scorn of people who do this at restaurants, but it was such a nice gesture on the restaurant's part, I can't hold it against them! I would absolutely revisit BB and would highly recommend it to any food lover - who has change to spare; the bill was over $300 for the seven of us; one bottle of wine, seven entrees, three tapas, four deserts and a couple rounds of beer. Bring your appetite AND your wallet. PS: All the reviews are spot on with the assessment of the Boudin aux Pommes tapa - the warm sausage melts in your mouth and the seasoned roasted apples make the perfect complement. I enjoyed my meal though I wouldn't bring just anyone along with me to eat here. I brought a friend who has traveled to Spain with me and also my boyfriend who is an adventurous eater. My friend said that what they had to offer on the menu was very characteristic of the basque region where she had stayed. I forced my guests to share escargot with me, which is pretty hard to get locally. It was good but I like mine with copious amounts of bread and there was little brought out. Whether that is the way to eat them or not- I just like mine with bread. The Portuguese sausage and pork tenderloin were notable dishes. Drink-wise, the mojitos were awful but the sangria was decent. If you want really great sangria, go to Chow in New Haven. The service was good and the wait staff really went out of their way to accommodate, but I went within the first few weeks that they opened. I would assume it's probably still good though. read more

I love Bistro Basque. It's the finest restaurant in Milford. I do not even care for cauliflower, and I devoured the cauliflower gratin tapa. The gambas al ajillo and calamares al la plancha are my favorite tapas. The paella is as good as what I ate in Barcelona. The sangria is great, and they have a reasonable wine list. The atmosphere is romantic and chandeliers inviting. Lastly, the service is solid. Your water will be refilled regularly and the staff are very courteous. It appears that they are expanding into next door. I cannot wait to check out the new space! read more

First trip to Basque, as well as Milford. I have to admit I would have given 5 stars, if the selection of alcohol was a little deeper. If you are interested in wine, they have quite the list, though prices seem a little steep. If interested in spirits, you may find something, but don't expect an extensive list of any specific liquor. Beer.... well you're pretty much out of luck. Granted they keep with the Spanish cuisine, so you have the typical especial and modello, but no craft brews to choose. Much of the menu is tapas. This is a tapas joint, if you're looking for large plates you may want to continue your search elsewhere. Though, they do have an entree menu. Again, not extensive in options, but you can likely find something you would like. I had the paella with shrimp, squid, clams, chorizo and chicken. There's plenty of chicken and chorizo, but light on the seafood. The rice is moist and relatively flavorful. However, I generally expect some big flavors in a paella. While good, this just didn't wow the palette. Amongst the small plates was a chorizo, squid, artichoke, shrimp, cod ball and possibly some others I'm missing. They were all flavorful, light and well presented. Service was good. I did have to wait to have my water glass refilled on a couple instances. The place was not that busy. Servers were mildly inattentive, but not to the degree that I would say we were ignored. They definitely give you time to choose, which is respectable. I'm just a stickler for sitting with an empty drink, no matter the content. A dinner (with drinks for 3 of 4 2/per person) totaled $150. Clearly, you can't expect to get completely full for cheap, but again this is tapas! Overall, the ambience was great. Service adequate. Food 3.75/5 Price on the high side. I would recommend at least one try, especially if you know what to expect going into a tapas experience. read more

We saw how this place got rave reviews and had to try it out since we were in the area. The Milford Oyster Fest was coming to a close so this was a good option since it was at the end of The Green. It was mighty loud in there. Kids yelling and drunk women at the bar. (People who probably left the festival and spilled into this place to continue drinking.) The owner (manager?) had a thick Spanish accent and I barely understood him over the din. Perhaps it was less noisy out on their patio? Also, it did not help that we were sitting practically in the middle of the dining room with the next table inches away from us. Specials included a seafood risotto but I could not resist ordering a few tapas to share. So we started with crab cakes San Sebastian style. If in San Sebastian they serve flat, loosely packed crab cakes that fall apart, then I am disappointed. They looked unhappy and just wanted us to eat them so they could get off the plates. Plus all the greens that came out with the tapas were not dressed, very wilted and broken. The lomo were 4 tasty grilled tender pieces of pork loin on bruschettas. A step above some places but not the best. I was looking forward to the boudin aux pommes. The small rolls of Portuguese sausages were sweet and I wished they were bigger, but if you scooped up the apple compote, most of the apple chunks stuck firmly to the plate. No snow shovel could scrape 'em up! That meant it must have sat in the kitchen waiting for the black paella to be ready. That Txiporones dish came out nice and warm. The bed of black squid were a little rubbery. The delicious black paella tasted like regular paella out of Spain (though it may look off-putting, the squid ink doesn't change the taste of the paella). It did turn my teeth black for a few minutes! How great to eat during Halloween! The final dish was crispy ravioli which sounded like they were going to be fried Italian style ravioli. But sadly, they were not. They tasted a bit like teriyaki flavored, crispy, triangular spring rolls from a Chinese restaurant with no dipping sauce. I was rather disappointed. We were full and did not have room for desserts, which many reviewers said were not that sweet and bland. I think there is potential for this place if they put more care in their presentation and food. The servers were rushing around and yet service was slow. There are better tapas places in CT but I wished Bistro Basque improved their Basque dishes since they are the only place that specializes in that region. Also, I am glad we paid for a few tapas which were $8-12 each and we didn't pay for $20 something for ok quality entrees. (The dishes don't look as pretty as the photos on their website. Wished we had those!) I don't know why people are excited about this place. Perhaps for the bar and drinks. Not sure how I missed this place for so long. I've been in Milford for a couple years now, knew that this restaurant was highly rated, but hadn't made it in. I finally dined here two weeks ago...and then went again last week. The layout is nice, the people are friendly, and the food is great. Each time we went we dialed up a bunch of tapas and wine. They pace the plates perfectly, no more than a couple at a time. My favorites are the chorizo & lentils and the lomo. There was also an incredible short rib tapas one night that we had to order twice. Getting a reservation wasn't hard but the place does fill up at night. On a Saturday night, we went for dinner at 5:30 and the place was full by 6:30. People are drinking and sharing plates and conversation, it's a fun place to be. A place I would take friends to have a nice, long casual dinner together. There's no sense of being rushed out so you can take your time, savor your food, and enjoy your company. read more

Once again, another CT restaurant that claims to have "tapas" but doesn't deliver. Listen people, it's very simple. If you charge $8-$10 for most of your "tapas" then they're not. They're fucking appetizers. Tapas should be cheap, simple, small portions. Not expensive, elaborate, small portions. Actually, I'm not even against expensive and elaborate as long as they're the exception. Anyway, tapas rant aside, the food here was pretty good. I'd say comparable to Barcelona but technically executed better. My osso bucco was pretty good, but small. And they didn't give me anything to scoop out the marrow with. Isn't that kind of the point of osso bucco? I do prefer a more traditional Italian style preparation to this one, but I still thought BB's version wasn't bad. My friend had a scallop dish which was really delicious. The scallops were cooked properly, and the sauce, which I can't recall, totally rocked. We didn't have dessert, so no comment on that for now, but we did have wine, and I thought their selections by the glass, although somewhat limited, were perfect for the restaurant's theme, and reasonably priced for an upscale joint. The service was also very good, and the waiter seemed knowledgeable about the menu and the wines. 3.5 stars for now, because I was expecting a little bit more for my money, but I'll definitely give this place another shot to impress me. read more

What a gem in Milford! Thanks to Yelp, a coworker came to meet me here on a business trip to Milford. The reviews did not steer us in the wrong direction so read through and take note... It was fairly early (6pm?) on a Tuesday so it was not at all busy when we arrived, and we took our time going through each of these amazing dishes: Starters: Highly recommend the cod croquettes and if you're really hungry, follow up with the chorizo and lentils. Entrees: We happily split the sea scallops and filet. The potatoes that came with the filet were to die for. Dessert: As if we'd not consumed enough food, we solidified our food coma with the chocolate dessert...the name escapes me, but it had chocolate mousse and was heavenly. I'd definitely recommend to anyone staying in or near Milford. There are also several bars for after-dinner drinks, and a little brewery down the street. While it was a cold winter night, I would imagine this area is very nice during the spring/summer with the water nearby. read more

Probably one of the more upscale restaurants in Downtown Milford, Bistro Basque is a great change of pace than the usual scene. It's on the smaller side, so reservations are definitely a good idea. If it's nice out, I recommend the back garden area. Very beautiful and relaxing. There menu consists of mostly tapas and also some main dishes. Everything I have ever tried here was very good. My favorite is the cauliflower tapa- it's memorable. They have a nice wine list and some unique cocktails. Service is friendly and adequate. This is a great date place! read more

And I thought Barcelona had it beat when it came to tapas. This place takes the cake! It's not your typical tapa joint- it mixes in a lot of flavors from France with a heavy focus on the Basque region of Spain. My best bud and I started off with a glass of Tempranillo. We then shared the Picodon- the zing from the goat cheese was perfect. I savored every bite. We also shared a plate of mussels in a white wine sauce with boatloads of garlic- THE most tender mussels this side of the Atlantic. I was hesitant at first as I've always had bad experiences with mussels being too rubbery, but whoever cooked 'em was a genius. For my entree, I got the Seafood Risotto special. It was cooked with just a touch of saffron and came with lobster, calamari, and scallops. DELICIOUS. It was so good, I devoured the leftovers cold the next day. I'm going back the next time I hit up Milford. read more

We celebrated my granddaughters graduation here yesterday. We couldn't haven chosen a more fabulous place! We had the guacamole and chips Artichokes the garlic shrimp and the squid in ink for appetizers all were excellent! Entrees were 2 salads one with grilled shrimp and one with steak. Rack of lamb and the monkfish and seafood stew and a steak with chimmichurri. All entrees were outstanding. Our waiter was awesome and the owner came and visited too!! It was a snowy friday evening, I took to yelp to help me out with finding a new place to eat. As always, I was not disappointed. We arrived early at around 5.45 and received a table. The tiny place did fill up soon and would recommend reservations otherwise. The waiter picked a red wine for us and for our lives we cannot remember what it was anymore but it was fantastic!!! We ordered from Tapas: ravioli stuffed with lamb, mushroom and spinach - bite into a cruncy ravioli and feel the warm juicy burst of flavour . I am drooling when I type this. Portuguese suasage with apples - the smooth texture of the sausage combined with apple bits that melt in your mouth gives way to a new flavor that i didnt know existed!! I had the duck leg confit for the entree. I am not a duck fan and orderd this on a whim and I was happy with my dish. Dessert - The flan was covered with orange zest and was just mildly sweet. Light on the sugar. Might not be one for those who dont like the bitterness of the zest. I loved it !! Definitely going back again! read more

Been here several times since, and I can't say I've been let down in the least. The atmosphere is rare in Connecticut. The front feels like an upscale Manhattan restaurant, but my favorite is the back area. Airy and green in the summer, cozy in the winter. Great. I've even discovered they have some great signature cocktails. The only thing that I would like to see is more variety in the menu. Like a more seasonal menu. I've tried a lot of items and would love to see a bit more variety. I do get the specials often, but I think a seasonal menu or at least seasonal specials would put this place over the top. read more

I just wanted to get out of dodge and celebrate making it to another Friday. I was flying solo and had a very nice relaxing meal of tapas and cava. The tables in the front, facing the street provided a view of the sidewalk and street traffic. I enjoyed my meal while people watching. The staff were very attentive and friendly without being intrusive. A very lovely evening. This was my second time at Bistro Basque and the food, atmosphere and staff are still outstanding. The restaurant is located downtown Milford, one block away from the train station so it's quite easy to get to from New Haven without a car. The cost of the ticket round trip from New Haven is $6.00 and the trains run often (it's the train leaving from Grand Central). There is a marina and the Milford green nearby so a nice way to walk off the flan! read more

A very good representation of Basque cuisine. The cauliflower gratin and artichoke heart appetizers were well done...although I suspect that the artichoke hearts were from a tin. Very good, nonetheless. My entree of chicken thighs stewed with peppers was well seasoned and delicious. Did not have a dessert, however, the menu included several items I'd enjoy trying, including flan. Espresso was on point and was the single best cup I've enjoyed since moving to New York from Portland, OR earlier this month. Overall, it was a very nice restaurant experience. No problems here on my first of I think many trips . It was funny when the host (maybe owner) greeted my date and i among with the group of 3 that walked in ahead of us. There was a table for 5 on the back patio. Because no 3 or 2 were available he seemed to be serious when he suggested we sit with strangers for the sake of sitting sooner. Still not sure if he was serious but if he was kidding then he fooled me. Anyhow that was funny... The same man was very nice and checked up on us during our meal and joked with us. He was busy tonight as it was PACKED on a Tuesday but seemingly every place downtown was as parking was very tight all over. We had a very nice endive salad(they accidentally almost brought a second one which if I was less honest I would have loved eating. I had also gotten short rib stuffed peppers which were good I would however say the flavors could have been meatier or more robust but surely still good. My date got a saffron and seafood rice... Not cooked to order in one big pot like the traditional Spanish recipe but damn good never the less... While the whole meal was a win, the desserts really stole the show! The flan was not very eggy which for me was a great thing and the chocolate mousse was addictive, if it's not made in house its one of the best outsourced products I have had and i'm ok admitting it. One thing I should mention, as makes sense with the region that inspires this restaurant, the menu is VERY fish heavy... The service was attentive and for what it's worth the olive oil and bread was really good but I could have eaten a bakery full and only got a piece... Which was ok because they helped me not look like a pig with my date. As a side note the Latin inspired menu next door is more or less the same restaurant with a different name and menu. read more

We are big fans of Barcelona and spanish tapas in general, so we had high standards coming into Bistro Basque and we were definitely pleased. It's a great atmosphere when you first walk in and it gets even better when you're escorted back into the outdoor patio with tables hiding around each corner and ivy crawling up the brick walls. Very cute. We had tapas only and didn't have any entrees--but that's just what we prefer to try more items. The tapas were delicious. The offerings all seemed to have a twist to them, with unique ingredients like piquillo peppers and boudin which put a fancier spin on the food. What was nice was that they each came with a little something extra like a salad or some other side serving--which some people might think complicates the simplicity of tapas. But it was all delicious and freshly prepared. The servers were all nice, but we had about 4 different servers so it got confusing at times, but certainly not a problem. The only gripe is that the price of each tapas was $8 - $12, which is a little higher than we're used to, but the serving size was pretty decent and you wouldn't feel like your money went to waste. So for a special night out or a little something extra, Bistro Basque is a great choice. read more
