The staff were friendly and we enjoyed a casual meal with conversation at the bar. The mood was pleasant and the ambiance was mellow. I have eaten at the bar in the past and like to watch the pizzas being made. The food was awesome. My friend ordered the Ceviche Di Tonno for his appetizer. It was pretty epic. I'm so happy I was finally able to visit Strega! The food was absolutely amazing. The pizza tastes truly like it does in Italy. They are sourcing so many ingredients directly from Italy and the quality and taste reflects that. Very nice wine and cocktail list. Such a yummy spot down in Milford. I was in town for an event and wanted to get dinner before hand and ended up wandering over by Strega and popped inside to check it out. I kicked my evening off with an espresso martini, which was absolute perfection. Slightly frothy on top with 3 coffee beans, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Got myself some focaccia and burrata as an opening appetizer because let's face it, that's what you get at an Italian restaurant. The burrata I felt was missing something, maybe a little balsamic drizzle, but other than that was delish. I went with the Strega pizza which is a bacon potato pie. I'd give this an 8/10. The flavor was awesome, but it needed to be a bit thicker in the center, the cheese & toppings slid right off. Yet another beautiful meal at Strega. This time around, I opted to go for a mocktail because I am 16 days alcohol-free! Their wine list is very tempting, but the basil lemonade I special ordered hit the spot. Shout out to the bartender for entertaining my request. They also have NA beers on their drink menu. CAPESANTE & ZUCCHINE * Clearly a very beautiful dish, and admittedly not what I was expecting in the best way. The zucchini mousse and 'scapece' zucchini did not overpower the beautiful flavor and texture of the scallops. The sweetness from the carrots accented the acidity of the pickled zucchini crisps. This was definitely my favorite dish of the night, not only for looks but for flavor. OKONOMIYAKI * This was ordered out of curiosity. Japanese street food in a classy Italian joint? Let's see... they did a wonderful job with the cabbage pancake, and the bonito flakes did not disappoint. Sometimes the flavor is a bit too fishy for my taste -- This was very well balanced and surprisingly not heavy for a dish that is all carbs and fat! Definitely worth a try. Besides... Who doesn't love a dish that waves hello before you devour it? SHORT RIBS * I am no stranger to short ribs. Usually, I will go for a short rib on a menu before I go for a steak. These were SO tender, and the lime infused potato purée added that nice acidity that a fatty meat like short rib needs to create a balanced dish. The veggie mousse added a nice warm flavor which was very nice on a cold, soggy day like yesterday. The Takeaway * I think this post speaks for itself. I had been wanting to try this place for a while. We were pleasantly surprised that it had takeout. We got the Strega pizza, Rosemary focaccia and pannacotta. When we called, they wanted to check how long it would take for us to arrive as our food would be ready quickly. The hostess was super friendly and came back with our food quickly. I proceeded outside and dropped our pannacotta because my sisters dog tangled herself in their table and we wanted to make sure she didn't run into the street. They were lovely and came out and asked if they could remake it for us. We gladly accepted and they also offered a bag to insure this didn't happen again on our ride home. The pizza and foccacia were just the right level of crispy and doughy. We got the Strega pizza which was great as was the foccacia. Sadly the pannacotta while beautifully presented was a little bit more solid that I normally like and didn't have as much flavor as I would like. Had a chance to try the new Strega in Milford after walking by the restaurant weekly with my BF and peeking into the windows and geeking out over the decor! We went on a Wednesday night and sat at a table, but you could also sit on the pizza bar and watch the chef do his magic! We both ordered pizzas. My BF had the margarita sans basil and I opted for the Cacio e Pepe pie. My pie had a delicious cacio e Pepe fondue and cheese and yellow tomatoes! It was delicious! My BF (who is a very picky pizza person) loved his pie. He said the dough was incredible and sauce good. He let me have a bite of his and I had the most incredible cheese pull. I agreed the sauce was great and so cheesy! Service was fantastic. The chef and manager came by to check in on our experience and chat with us a bit. The chef is also certified by the AVPN in Naples Italy (only one in CT) with regards to the art of Neapolitan pizza making. So he knows his stuff! They gave us a small cut loaf of focaccia bread, it was warm and had melted bitter with olive oil and a touch of garlic. The dough on the bread was very lightly . For our apps We had Polpette de Angus. It was three angus beef meatballs with tomato sauce sprinkled with parmigiana Reggiano. The meatballs were soft and tasty. Melanzana Ripiena. It was a stuffed cooked eggplant. Simple ingredients, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, parmigiana Reggiano , San Mariano tomato mouse and basil power . Delicious. The fresh mozzarella made the dish Mozzarella Di Bufala Campana, Fresh mozzarella on a ball topped with fresh cherry tomatoes and basil. The cheese was creamy Main course I had the Margherita pizza the dough was like the bread, light and tasty. The crust was very thin and the fresh mozzarella with the sauce made the dish Dessert Olive oil gelato, topped with drops of ages Balsamic vinegar . It sounds crazy, but it was delicious. You could taste the olive oil, but not the vinegar Panda cotta. Straga liquor pan a cotta, dark chocolate syrup and mixed berries. Different but good. I have been wanting to visit Strega since it opeNed and yesterday I finally did. Although the ambiance and service were pleasant it was the food and portion size that were very disappointing. I ordered the gnocchi with a yellow tomato sauce which was more like a puree. it came in a small bowl which resembled a salad bowl. I had to ask for cheese and the entree $24, did not come with salad or bread, both items a la carte and $13-16. I am Italian and love Italian food but Strega is not on my return list. read more

So I rarely dish out five stars but this was a unique and lovely experience from start to finish. Doug, the Uber talented personable award winning bartender (he really has won awards) was fantastic. This chef-owned Trattoria serves authentic Italian cuisine (there's no chicken Parmesan on this menu) We started with a Sicilian pizza , a Neapolitan crust topped with caponata an Italian version of ratatouille and fresh imported Italian mozzarella. It was delicious, puffy and light. The next course was house made gnocchi served in a black truffle cream sauce. The Chef topped the dish with a generous portion of sliced truffles. The aroma was incredible and the dish was nearly perfect. I rarely add salt when dining out but a pinch would have taken a very good dish to another level. We ordered the Fresh cod which my guest enjoyed and I ordered the Beef shank which was spoon tender and served in what I'd describe as a potato veloute, a thin flavorful sauce of puréed potatoes and celery root The chef (Donilo) and his assistant (Victorio) were extraordinarily synchronized moving around the tiny open kitchen located behind the bar. It was great watching them finish each others plates without hesitation, a true ballet of cooking. Everything was prepared fresh and the attention to detail was impressive. Service and lots dismal, pricey (albeit nicely presented) but a fun time in general. Food purely ok (exceptional focaccia w the charc tray). Really awful, spacey (though super friendly/chatty) service in very very stuffy, very hot, uncomfortable, crowded restaurant. Server spilled drink all over since she just didn't LOOK before setting it down. Then when I asked for napkins an hr later after I got tired of my glass suctioning to the table and causing multiplying sticky rings EVERY TIME I picked it up she had to try herself. Insanely loud also due to loud music and really loud ppl next to us. Had to go get EVERYTHING myself, only to be asked a 2nd and 3rd time by the 2 servers. Busser actually tried to pile share plate with flatware on it DIRECTLY ON TOP OF another share plate with flatware on it, causing it all to topple over and land on ground. (?! OMG. Kind of entertaining if not so precarious.) Had a res (which Google apparently charged for, hope this refunds, what is the deal with this), but we had to wait for. We were a hair early, but still had to wait past the res time, which is aggravating. Especially in a very hot stuffy loud place with no place to wait besides busy entryway. Food: charc board fine, exceptionally fresh focaccia slices and green olives. Gnocchi (tartufo)- kind of hard texture. Perhaps undone? Very bland and needed salt (I rarely add salt!), with some shaved truffles Polpette- very hard and reminiscent of Spaghetti-Os sauce. Also needed salt (see above, I usually think everything is on the salty end) and flavor. Lamb- braised. Not that flavorful. Not that interesting/impressive for braised lamb. Still tough, so the original recipient (who doesn't cook) actually brought it home to cook longer. Tiramisu- very fresh and creamy, was like a stemless glass of whipped cream and very light fruit, barely any other flavor. Some love everything here, so perhaps I'm the complicated one. Also wondering why if SO hot and stuffy, they didn't just open all the window/doors up front. The front door was open the entire time on a hot, humid day. No breeze whatsoever inside. We all just wanted to up and leave upon entering this sauna. I think I'd MAYBE return for cocktails (and bread?) at the bar- in the winter perhaps. I just don't understand the love for this place. And was really excited to try it! Very disappointing. Especially since they didn't act like anything was wrong with the service. Strega, in Milford CT, is an exciting mix of fine dining and contemporary night out, with delicious food. We shared an appetizer of a Carpaccio ($20) which came drizzled with olive oil, salted, and peppered beautifully, with thinly shaved mushrooms AND black truffle. The beef itself was fresh, sliced with finesse, and was a perfect savory palette cleanser. We then went for two gnocchi dishes for entrees, one with a black truffle parmesan cream sauce ($29) and the other, a pork and tomato ragu ($28), baked in a bowl. The former was salty and creamy, but slightly overpowering in its flavor, and the latter was seasoned beautifully, though ever so slightly skimpy in the amount of pork present in the sauce. However, in both dishes, the gnocchi was light, fluffy, and portioned perfectly; it was some of the best gnocchi we've had. We also ordered a Diavola Pizza to share ($18) which had spicy salami and fresh marinara sauce. The crust was perfectly charred and the heat from the salami was the perfect level, contrasted against the creamy mozzarella. For dessert, we went with the Tiramisu ($12), which was the only letdown of the night. The texture was off, and it was thick, almost as if it was made with condensed milk, and it lacked the defined cake layers that one expects in a tiramisu. As a local Milford resident I wanted to like Strega more than I truly did... I found the pizzas to be average and lacking toppings. Strega's pizza oven cooks a maximum of four pizzas at a time, which on a Saturday night caused a lag in waiting time for our dinner to be served. As we all know, pizza is best served hot which left friends of ours waiting for their pizza to be cooked while others were served. We found the eggplant appetizer to be underwhelming. The only positive thing I can say about my experience at this restaurant is the lighting was beautiful. The acoustics were awful as we arrived and were assaulted by how loud it was. It's a small room with about 15 tables. In our reservation we had said we were celebrating a birthday. Our waiter, Adrian, was inexperienced and forgetful. We ordered drinks and a bottle of wine. The drinks arrived and we had to remind him that we still needed the wine. Then we waited for 20 minutes to put our order in. People who ordered after us, got served before us. We asked for grated cheese to put on our gnocchi and had to remind him by having to get up and finding him standing at the bar - he had not checked on us to see if everything was ok. He kept apologizing but continued to neglect us. The prices were ridiculous for the portions we received - 4 people - $400??!! Food was meh! Drinks were expensive and tiny glasses. The owner/chef made his way to a few tables but not all and not ours. As we were leaving he asked how everything was and I told him it was a very bad experience and gave details. Glad to have Strega downtown. This has been added into our regular rotation which is reserved for a few of our absolute favorite local spots. This is very good Neapolitan style pizza. Surprisingly, a gas oven is used instead of wood (they couldn't pull off wood in the space), and has much of the flavor and texture you'd expect from wood. There's some very interesting combinations, like the Cacio e Pepe, Calabrese, Tartufo. All excellent. The small plates are all very good too. Service is excellent as well. This would be a great date spot, good family gathering place and even a decent business dinner location. They do everything pretty well and it is easy to feel yourself transported somewhere else as you relax into your meal. The vibes are immaculate here, it was the perfect date night. BF and I sat at the bar and enjoyed everything the amazing bartender and kitchen had to offer - from the white wine spritz, the Melanzana Ripiena, the Calabrese (with legit 'nduja - spicy sausage pate I haven't seen outside of Calabria), the Cacio e Pepe, and finally the complimentary taste of the espresso martini made with an imported espresso liquor (literally the best we've ever had). I had high hopes coming here based on the reviews and pictures. I came here 6 months ago and they did not have the gnocchi so might come back after seeing the menu. When I went, it seemed like a pizza place. There is only one pizza oven that can cook a few pizzas at a time. The pizza was fine not exceptional and can probably find similar style pizzas at other restaurants. The thing I remember most is ordering a pork or lamb chop and there was a hair on my plate. So I mentioned this to the server and she said "are you sure that's not a crack on the plate?". No it was not a crack on the plate. I could move the hair with my fork. So that's why I haven't been back and haven't been eager to go back since it is about 20 miles for me. I would go if I was in the area but not a must. 3.5 stars for me. read more

Great new restaurant in Milford. Straight forward menu with starters, salads and then Neapolitan-style pizza for the main course. All of the food has been excellent so far and the Neapolitan pizza is a nice change from other options in the area. The wines so far have been really nice and well priced, they recently added some cool new cocktails as well. Working our way through the pizza menu, everything has been delicious so far. We received limocello on our first visit (awesome touch!) but then not the next two trips so I'll keep an eye out for that next trip. I picked an "anchovies" pizza : dough was perfect, tomatoes were delish but I was expecting more anchovies. It's almost like they took 1 and chopped it finely. I was expecting whole anchovies. This was not the case. Carpaccio was too "busy" : too much stuff on the plate but lacked flavor. Selection of wine is good and Camilla knew what she was talking about. The artwork though was... how can I say... let's be nice : not my taste at all. Only one thing bothers me - a lot : when you book the table. they asked for you CC numbers, and will charge you $30 per person if you don't cancel 24 hours before. Really ??? Some of the most authentic Italian cuisine I've had the pleasure of experiencing in Connecticut! All of the products used were so fresh, especially the mozzarella, and the pizza crusts were light but crispy. Chef Danilo's passion goes into every dish he makes, and it does not go unnoticed. I thought the open-kitchen setting was really unique, and it was nice to see the chef chatting with the customers that were sitting there. Part of me doesn't want to write this review--I don't want you to know how good this food is, how great the service is, how good you FEEL after eating high quality - delicious food. Specifically this is for you if you're one of those people who has discovered gluten bothers you, but you enjoyed eating in Italy (or elsewhere in EU) I have a secret for you... the EU doesn't allow their farmers to spray glyphosate (aka roundup) on their wheat crops. So it might not be gluten that bothers you but the GMO and glyphosate saturated wheat in the US (in fact there's tons of research showing many folks are more likely glyphosate intolerant vs gluten) Why does this matter? We'll if you're like me and LOVE bread, pizza, and pasta (real stuff not gluten free) but hate how you feel after eating them.. your options are get organic OR get food imported from EU wheat products. Sounds easy, but almost no restaurants pay for imported or organic flour... most EXCEPT Strega!!! Yes they important their flour from Italy! And my goodness, everything you missed you can have again and not suffer!!! read more

So glad I got to visit Strega downtown. Such an amazing addition to Milford downtown. We tried Strega on a whim for date night, and ended up falling in love with their Neapolitan style pizza. The flavor and quality is what you would expect from an authentic Italian pizzeria, but with a rustic, local charm. Their menu is comprised of an extensive list of italian fare, and everything we tried was delicious. The ambiance leaves some to be desired, as the lighting and decor isn't up to par with what it could be, but the food makes all of that go away. The wood floors and tables, heavy drapes, velvet chairs (Uber comfortable and kinda sexy) are all rich authentic textures with a mix of Avant-garde hanging lights and artwork on the walls. At the back wall are some authentic Italian pieces carefully placed along side bottles of Strega. Don't drink it unless you know what you're in for. I warned you. Great 1st date place.
