Came with an almost $20 price tag. My companion had similar complaints about the clams: too few, too little. I dined here for the first time about a month ago for a family dinner and we sat outside on the patio. Our server was very friendly, prompt, and polite. All the staff were following COVID protocols, tables were all socially distanced and everyone wore masks. I had a salad to start and the Chicken Cordon Bleu for dinner. The complimentary bread they give out at the start of the meal was tasty. All of our meals came out quickly and the servers all made sure we had everything we needed. One thing I will say though is the menu itself did seem extremely expensive for the for taste, quality and portion sizes of the entrees. Tracy is, not only, an amazing waitress and bartender, but she engages customers in a very genuine way. I ordered the Spaghetti Incident which is pasta served in a butter chardonnay sauce with grilled portabella mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, green beans and spinach, and topped with freshly shredded parm cheese, with the option to add shrimp, which I did. The shrimp were small, but it didn't matter because the dish was absolutely delish. My dining partner ordered the chicken cordon bleu, which was good and he cleaned the plate. The bartender/waiter treated us like he would rather us leave then be there. Little does he know my daughter is a manager of a very popular restaurant in town and I have been in the service business for 38 years. The menu did have some nice lunch items like salads, but none that stood out that I had to have, sandwiches all ok, but not any sounded like "yes, I have to have this", same went for the pastas. I settled on a hot ham and chees sandwich that I thought said had Swiss cheese, but the Swiss was mixed with yellow cheese, drowning out the Swiss. The bread was a French roll, and good. I've been eating here since it opened. Decades. Always had great food and service. Until today. I ordered a $30 bacon wrapped filet that was actually a chunk of New York Strip. Flavorful but tough and a rip off as compared to a filet. Wrapped in bacon with none of the texture of filet. Marbling, of course, unlike a filet. Not all customers are unschooled and unaware. I mentioned it to the waiter John. He did nothing. Nor did the manager who, by the way, was counting paper money at the welcome stand during the 6 pm rush. We ate at Bistro 44 over 10 years ago. It was very good. Went back a recent Saturday night at 7:25 (learned kitchen closes at 7:30) but they took our order. Chicken Marsala and fish tacos. Also French onion soup. The chicken dish was small chunks of tough chicken cooked in a sauce tasting of sugar and soy sauce. Bland rice pilaf and plain broccoli. Fish tacos had mushy fish and what tasted like Boursin herb cream cheese. Cold flour tortillas. Nothing was really edible except the soup which we enjoyed. We took the food home just to trash it. The server was very pleasant. I'm sorry this restaurant changed to basic cafeteria food with high prices. Plus it's dark and depressing now. read more

"Bistro 44" -- the name brings to mind sophisticated culinary options, but the menu and the food are more in line with a diner than a bistro, although admittedly a diner with an pleasant and upscale dining room. It is a popular restaurant, especially with the over-65 set. The service was fine, and it was apparent watching the servers that they know some of the clientele quite well. Over the past three years I've been here perhaps three times, but the restaurant has failed to win me over as a fan during any of my visits, despite its close proximity to my home. Most recently, as part of my search for the great Tucson burger, we made a visit during their weekly "1/2 price burger Sunday". The hamburger patty itself had a decent flavor, but the overall sandwich was merely okay and not great. The fries were crispy, but cold. The search for a truly great burger continues. read more

This review is based on half price burger Sunday. I have only been here this one time. Juicy burger cooked to medium on a delicious bun. I asked for jalapeños and when they arrived they were FRESH and not pickled which I loved. Not only that, they even grilled them without me asking. Awesome! Service was great. The burger was cooked to perfection and delicious, fries were also tasty. I enjoyed the most delicious red blend wine. Now I remember why I had not gone there for years. Small tasteless portions at higher prices. With so many good eateries in Tucson I will definitely pass this place up. I had a chicken sandwich that could only be considered a half portion in most p,aces. It had overlooked tough chicken breast with bacon. It tasted like raw eggs. The fries served with it were ok . As mentioned in previous posts the other patrons were quite elderly and while that is not a concern I think the bland quality and small portion sizes are reflective. For the most part I love this place. I usually will go here for their half off burgers on Sunday's and a drink or two. Unfortunately I don't usually get much else but all the food that goes by looks freaking amazing. Their burgers are always up to my expectation, and their fries are always well cooked.
