    Rare **Bistro 44 Burger RARE

I will never return to this place. I ordered a medium hamburger and it came rare. The manager sent two different waitresses over to try to convince me that it was medium and said if they make another burger for me, they're going to charge me for two burgers. Needless to say, I sent the burger back and left. Their food is pretty good, but Dina, Tracy and Shelly have no idea how to treat customers. It was really unbelievable actually.

This place has a couple of specials that were awesome. They have a Sunday burger special and an early bird special. The group I was with enjoyed their meals as did I. Service was good and the price was fair.

After a long morning in Sabino Canyon, we were able to walk to this bar for happy hour and wine/beer. I had a wedge salad and was amazed at the amount of bacon and cheese on it! Husband had three sliders and I had one and he finished the salad. Lots of locals here, and a few tourists. Would totally recommend the establishment, especially for HH. Service was incredibly attentive, too.

The service at this restaurant was excellent. Our server was very attentive. The ambience was casual and comfortable. I ordered the brazed ribs with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The asparagus was phenomenal. I enjoyed the braised ribs and mashed potatoes.

Lunch before, dinner now. Our hostess was so warm she reminds me of a summer breeze. The ambiance felt dewy due to the typhoon that's coming, but it relaxed me. Most importantly- the food and drinks came at the perfect time and hit the perfect spot. Server did his job impeccably there's nothing to complain about. 4.5 stars. I'll be a comeback kid.

Our party of six rolled in for dinner on Wednesday evening. I called ahead and they reserved a table for us right behind a group of Tucson retirees who were break g down their trips, news about their families and all the haps at the retirement center. We were greeted and given an overview of the specials not listed on the menu. Most of us selected the 14oz Ribeye which came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Bite size bread came out before the meal and was okay as something to munch on before the diner course arrived. The steaks were good sized, mashed was of good consistency and the veggies cooked well, not too hard or soft-right in between. The flavor on everything was a little bland honestly, I don't think any of it had seasoning. Salt and pepper were absolutely necessary and even then, didn't add all that much to the flavor. Good, but not great. I kinda expected a little more from a place that appears to be more upscale.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and we were greeted right away by a friendly server who helped us get settled. My husband was starving, so we placed our order as soon as we sat down, and the food arrived within 15-20 minutes. The service throughout the evening was outstanding. Our water glasses were kept full, and our server checked on us regularly without being intrusive. We started with the smoked beets, which were absolutely incredible. I'll honestly be thinking about that dish for days! We also ordered the seafood platter with shrimp, crab claws, oysters, and three slices of sashimi. Everything on the platter was fresh and beautifully prepared. The oysters and sashimi were rich, creamy, buttery, and absolutely delicious. The steak frites was another standout. I was pleasantly surprised to see it featured picanha steak. It was packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and incredibly tender. Overall, we had a fantastic dining experience with great food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We can't wait to come back!

They looked absolutely mouth watering and were about $20/lb. We also ordered a Steak Frites to go and it was honestly perfection. The most perfectly medium-rare steak with so much flavor along with the perfectly crisp French fries. The baby bleu shallot sauce was just okay. The taste of fat was stronger than the other ingredients. But the fries were so beautifully cooked that you honestly don't need any sauce at all. Just enjoy their tallow fried goodness! Customer service was okay. Our order was handled quickly but our friend who placed the order felt uncomfortable in the space. Some of the young staff members were repeating her name and then would laugh and she felt a bit self-conscious because of it. There were also a lot of people in the food prep area laughing and hanging out, which didn't feel super clean. But, due to the fantastic quality of the food, we will definitely be back and look forward to hopefully have an even better overall experience

The young gentleman who waited on us (Avi) was outstanding - capably answering all of our menu and origin story questions. All beef comes from a grass-fed ranch in Montana (Meijer) and is butchered several times a week, on premises by the owner or head chef (prep room behind the dining areas). We were both eyeing the Carne Asada for which they use a skirt steak that is tenderized by pounding rather than marinating (as is more commonly done for tacos/fajitas). Being hammered is definitely the better path when served as steak. Since we always share, she got the Asada ($39) with the "surf/turf" option which added 4 grilled shrimp (+$15) and I got the 8oz Filet ($49). We also split an app: the Cast Iron Mushrooms (caps filled with beef chorizo and cheese) $14 and they were tender and delicious! For drinks she got the Tucson Old Fashioned (made with local Whisky del Bac) $16 and I tried the "Mexico to Milan" - a Negroni made with Mezcal instead of gin $15. Both were outstanding - strong, flavorful, and not too sweet. Steaks arrived about 20 minutes after initial ordering (just right, not rushed) and were each cooked as ordered (medium). Note: steaks come plain - that is generally no sides or sauces. Avi had politely urged the mushroom mixta ($10) but I had (regretfully) passed. The fillet was solid/good, with a decent char, well salted, and pink through the middle. However, the Carne Asada stole the show, and it wasn't even close. That tenderized skirt steak, unadorned with interfering marinades, just exploded with rich beef flavor. The shrimp were merely "ok" especially at $15 and we would definitely skip next time in favor of another appetizer. We both worked much of this beautiful Saturday and even coincidentally missed our lunches, so dessert was a no brainer... as was the lava cake. Avi concurred, literally jumping with enthusiasm and adding that was his favorite and we would not regret it. She's normally not a huge sweets person (I am!) yet she also marveled at all of the flavors, textures (and temperatures) of this concoction. Final notes: the bill total will be after-tax which means you're calculating your tip with the tax included in the total, a pet peeve, but it appears to be the way all 'merican restaurants are trending now. We also noticed that with respect to the Carne Asada entree, compared to photos just a year ago, portion sizes appear to have shrunk a bit (20 percent?) while cost went up ($35-$39). Parking will be a challenge but there is a garage only 2 blocks away. Or, opt as we did, and make it a "downtown/4th Ave evening" and trolly your way here. There's a stop directly in front!

I tried to make reservations at another restaurant beforehand known for their prime rib, but they were booked full. So I reserved this place. Upon our arrival we entered the door on the right hand side of the building. We told them the name our reservation was under and they said it was for the restaurant next door on the left side of the building. It was for the more upscale restaurant as mentioned by the host. They have two restaurants by the same name that sit opposite of each other. I hear their counterpart is just as good. We entered the building from the left and told the host the name the reservation was under. The host wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She hardly even looked as us. We were standing there and she seemed to be busy with something else. No ' it'll be just a few minutes', nothing. She was talking with the other ladies. Finally we were seated. Our server was very nice. We decided on two steak dinners. My wife had the 8oz filet and I got the rib-eye both med-rare. Our steaks look good when we received it. But my steak was served rare! It was chewy and fatty. I chewed for days just to get a single piece down. My wife steak was overcooked to medium. There's nothing worse than an overcooked filet mignon! We don't like sending food back for obvious reasons. We've heard too many horror stories, not to mention I use to work in the food industry. As I mentioned, our server was very nice and attentive as well! She constantly checked on us and my tip reflected that! For a $170.00 bill, our meal was mediocre at best. Thanks for ending my wife's Mother's Day on a sour note!

My family and I shared the oysters, shrimp cocktail, onion rings, potatoes au gratin, pork chops, and rib eyes; for dessert, we shared the lava cake. Everything was made perfectly. The chops and steaks were juicy, the seafood was plump and fresh and the entree sides were hot and tasty. The bon bon chocolate was rich and velvety. The first thing I need to own is that it's a shame I hadn't visited here before. We arrived at 5:30p and both the bar and patio areas were packed - standing room only, and no wonder. They have one of the better happy hours (daily! 3:00 - 6:30p) - able to accommodate both the slacker and the over-timer Lol. Basic drinks are all discounted such as house wines, well drinks, and beers. Their bottled wines and craft cocktails are all exempt though. Many of their appetizers are also discounted and some quite substantially. We grabbed a glass of the house cabernet ($6, normally $8) and the grilled shrimp wrapped in jalapeno bacon ($13, normally $20). NOTE: happy hour pricing is Only available if you order/consume at the bar or on the patio and that's clear in advance, and understandable. The dining areas were only half full at this early point (but filled up by 6:30) and the host kindly encouraged us to enjoy our starters at the bar as she would hold our table. We were then sat near the "back" of this long venue and frankly, aside from the lone windowed table at the very front, this would be my preferred seating - cozy, intimate, with only five other tables around us. For dinner drinks she got an Italian Nebbiolo Bricco Magno Red Blend ($13/glass, reliably terrific/mellow) and I got the Chupacabra ($15) Mezcal/prickly pear cocktail, strong and excellent as well. We got an additional appetizer: the roasted bone marrow ($19). I had never had marrow before but she raved about how good this can be if done properly (bonus, it is super healthy). Folks, a picture/worth a 1000... suffice to say this was simply outstanding! We both had long work weeks and were craving meat - just a damn good steak. Our waiter, without blinking recommended the 8oz bison filet mignon ($65) as his absolute menu fav, and then the day's special: 14oz ribeye ($50). We ordered each. All dinners come with two sides and we each got the day's special: roasted half artichoke and she got the loaded baked potato while I got the mashed potatoes. Food arrived about 15 minutes later at good temperature (warm/rested with a strong char) with each being accurately grilled (medium and medium-rare). Taste was outstanding. Neither one of us had bison filet before and marveled how it (subtly) added a "wild" edge to an always outstanding, lean-but-tender, cut of beef. The loaded baked was terrific, however, the mashed was the only disappointment... a plainer mash one could not make themselves - pure white and borderline dry, no milk, butter, egg, gravy(?), nothing to make it creamy or add any flavor dimension - a surprise frankly. The only other "critique" is that the dessert menu could add some kind of dark/chocolate concoction. All in all, though, we loved our experience and have decided to add this to our periodic special dinners rotation! Staff was outstanding - just the proper balance of attentive and quiet - and waters never went below half empty. Parking is free and plentiful, especially behind the restaurant (and yes, if you continue on around the back there is another long entrance/exit driveway that comes out the other side of Jimmy John's and Noodleholics.

I understand the head chef has a French influence, but frankly it overwhelms the food and takes away from the freshness. I had the snapper since they didn't have the halibut. Where they seemed to sit everyone coming into the restaurant. If the restaurant was packed I would understand but every other room was empty. Who wants to sit along the pathway to the bathroom? Service was so/so. Had to ask for drinks multiple times. But frankly the quality of the food was not worth the cost. Definitely will not be returning, until they revamp the menu to include less French style and more uniquely inspired fresh food. I mean if we wanted French we would have gone to Le Rendezvous or Wild Garlic which are top notch.

With that area of town being so crowded, I thought parking was going to be an issue, but I found a spot right near the front of the restaurant every time.
