I'd been to Birroteca a handful of times before last night. While I had never been blown away, I had enjoyed the Duck Duck Goose pizza (I'm a big fan of duck eggs) and it seemed like a nice spot.
Last night, however, the terrible service was barely mitigated by the mediocre food.
Immediately upon our arrival, the atmosphere was unfriendly. When we asked the host if they had a table open, he coldly told us "no", but after a beat added that the patio was open. He seemed to be judging us for not having made a reservation.
When we were escorted to the table on the patio, we asked about the happy hour, which the website states is for the "Bar, Lounge & Patio Only". The waiter told us it was only at the bar, and when we mentioned the website said it was for the patio as well, he offered no response other than "oh". It was not a huge deal, but it they should update the website. Furthermore, the waitstaff could still have apologized for the error, or at least offered more than monosyllabic response.
The waiter proceeds to ignore our table for the next 15 minutes, leading us to go get our own drinks at the bar.
The happy hour drink specials we got from the bar were all underwhelming. We got one of each: the aperol spritz, the negroni, and the garibaldi spritz ($8 each). The flavor profiles were distinctly similar, with a strong bitter component which my two friends disliked. I personally enjoy bitter drinks, but the bitter aspect of these drinks were particularly overwhelming. The bartender does not appear to know how to find the right balance of flavors.
This was further evidence by the second drink I ordered, it's not on the website but I believe it was called "Cocktail Most Likely" or something similar. It immediately caught my eye because of the odd ingredients: orange vodka, Saint Germaine, rose water, and lavender-peppermint syrup. I love floral notes and odd flavor combinations, but even I thought the inclusion of five strong favor profiles sounded a bit wild. I thought, however, something that weird would have to be good to make it on the menu. I was mistaken. I don't know if it would be accurate to describe it as medicinal, as it was as sugary as it was botanical. The flavors just did not work at all, perhaps the elder flower, rose, and lavender would have worked with the orange, but the addition of the peppermint turned it into a muddled mess reminiscent of my mother's bath oils. The fact that someone let this drink on the menu honestly astounds me. I could not finish it.
So we were 0/4 with regards to cocktails. I will also note it took the waiter over 15 minutes to bring my friend a beer, even delivering drinks to multiple other tables while we were waiting.
The food fared better than the cocktails, but was not delicious enough to make up for the other aspects of the service. The fried chickpeas are delightful and unique, I would recommend trying them if you haven't before. The cheese plate ($15) was yummy (although you could get a better one for less with much better service at 13.5% wine bar), but only came with three slices of bread for 2 cheeses and a meat. The roasted artichoke side was well made and was accompanied by a flavorful aioli. The much hyped brussels sprouts would only be revelatory to someone who has never had good brussels sprouts. They were fine, but overly salty and would have been aided by some acid. I ordered the Duck Duck Goose pizza again, and while it was fine, it was not as good as I remembered. The combination of Duck, egg, and the particularly sweet sauce is pleasant, but a bit much for a whole pizza. My friend had the Margherita Pizza with meatballs and it was fine, but nothing special. I left full, but with a sour taste in my mouth from the experience.
If the food, drinks, or atmosphere were better, the pretentious attitude of the waitstaff would be more warranted. This, however, is not a five star dining experience. It particularly irks me that the restaurant presents itself as a hipstery option (s/o to the grungy octopus mural with paint splatters on it, very original), while being rude to anyone who does not present as a rich, white soccer mom (a large percentage of the clientele around us). I understand what they are doing and why their doing it, but they aren't Woodberry Kitchen yet (a place that backs up their reputation with good service).
If you are someone trying to go to a nice dinner in Hamden, there are many better options. From the aforementioned Woodberry Kitchen and 13.5% wine bar to places like The Food Market and Arthouse (which has better pizza). There are so many great places in Hamden that feel much more authentic and offer better food and service. read more
