This is a new neighborhood cafe- excellent location, contemporary ambience, exceptional staff and top notch coffee. They serve breads, muffins and selected sandwiches as well. Lots of outdoor and indoor work space. We always craved a place to catch up with left over work and Roast serves that purpose best for me. Starbucks is always full with minimal seating. I have tried their avocado toast, croissant and a few kinds of espresso drinks. The food is average ( if u r looking for exceptional flaky croissant- Canelle is a better choice) , drinks top notch ( at par with star bucks) and service very courteous. Food: I have not tried their food but will do soon! The menu looks delicious! Service: the staff is amazing, friendly, and helpful. They answer all my questions I had about what was in each coffee and they also took the time to help me out with their customized latte art they do in through their app! You download coffee ripples and you pick a picture. BOOM! It's amazing how you can get any picture you want on to your coffee! I love it. Price: reasonable and totally worth it. Stellar - A+ on the avocado Toast they literally have DAKOTA CHALLAH like that is the top of the line challah in my book and everyone in the area, their avocado is sometimes a little brown but I think that means that its actually fresh and not having some weird preservatives in it. Cold brew is solid and the Birmingham Roast actually provides quality coffee - which I've found hard to come by. I love the staff here as well, they are welcoming and remember your name!! this place is also open early which I strongly appreciate. I do wish they got a nitro machine for the cold brew because then I'd really be impressed. DO IT. The one lacking item is the parking, but honestly it encourages me to walk here (as I live close by) vs driving. I actually came across this place doing a DoorDash delivery. I was so captivated by the smell and the descriptions of the drinks that I just had to try it. This is a very cute coffee shop in Downtown Birmingham close to Woodward, next to Jax Car Wash. It's a really cool place to hang out or get some work done with really nice decor. Lots of black, rose gold and copper colors. The staff was very nice! They could tell it was my first time there so they were really sweet and helpful. I tried an iced Honey Joy and it was delicious! It's nothing like your Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Tim Horton style coffee. The flavors and combinations are very unique. The prices are pretty standard for coffee...$4-8. As you know, street parking is non existent in that area so prepare to park somewhere and walk to get here. I live nowhere near Birmingham but I will definitely be stopping by again to try more coffee...Kuppa Joy is next! read more

I ordered a Costa Rica pour over with cinnamon and chocolate tasting notes for $3.75. My coffee had a nice flavor and the price is competitive with other locally owned, third wave coffee shops. It was my first time in Birmingham Roast today, as I'm new to the area and in need of a quality coffeeshop- I definitely found one here. I had heard a lot about this business via word of mouth and through my own research, so I decided to check it out. Plus, I have worked in coffee shops before, so I feel reasonably qualified to judge coffee drinks. The espresso I had was a complete delight, with a thick crema, a wonderful body and that perfectly balanced roasty profile with some sweetness on the back end and a gentle touch of acidity. The barista definitely knew her stuff. Not only that, but the folks who took my order started a pleasant little conversation with me, and even wished me luck on an interview and said goodbye as I was leaving. This is a very pleasant place to drink delicious coffee, and I look forward to trying the other menu items soon. Keep doing great stuff, guys! read more

This is a great place to grab a cup of coffee. We love going to Birmingham on a nice day to grab a cup of coffee and just walk around the downtown area. Great outdoor seating on a sunny day. They have a mix of cold and hot coffee/teas. Honey Joy is a black tea drink with raw honey and steamed milk, one of my absolute favorites. One special thing they do that isn't offered in other coffee shops in the Detroit area is their customization latte art. Using the ripple app, you can scan in a photo that you would like the machine to print, and it will actually print your photo onto your latte. There is an extra fee to do this. Service is quick with friendly staff, clean environment. The space has unique and modern decor. Overall, a solid place to stop by at when you need a cup of joe. I find it impossible not to love this place. From ambience, interior, staff, menu choices, F&B quality--feels like it's been a while since I fell so hardly in love with a coffee shop. I would be happy to literally sit here for hours and hours, making multiple purchases of the drinks and food they have. My personal favorite would be the Almond Joy latte (cold), which sometimes I would order with only 1 shot of espresso as I'm quite sensitive to caffeine. However, do try their secret menu (not listed) but tasted amazing. I forgot the name but it's something to do with Honey Lavender (I guess it's a lavender version of the honey rose, which is like lavender latte with a twist). they also have fun selections of healthy food. I had their zucchini muffin which was wonderful. Moist, humble, simple, mildly sweet, and is just delicious. I would recommend it warm, but even if not i believe it will taste great. What a great place!! One day driving down woodwork I discovered this place and I'm truly happy I did. Atleast 2 times a week I pop in and get a coffee and a cheese cake muffin! So yummy. The staff never fails to be so sweet and helpful with new drinks. They always have a smile on their face and are so accommodating. I ordered a drink with less ice and they mistakenly added a lot of ice. She realized right after she handed me it and made me another drink and let me keep that one as well. I love the ambiance of Birmingham Roast and its menu offerings are certainly more palatable than Commonwealth's as of late, however my one gripe is that I despise the taste of their coffee. It is exceptionally earthy and almost coarse. It needs to revise the brand of nut-based milk it uses, because the lattes are not smooth and silky, but strong and earthy, resulting in strong stomach pains for me :/ So, a message to B Roast: PLEASE work on your lattes. Continue with the wonderful customer service and quality consistency. These two things matter so much and have been severely lacking in its competitors, like Commonwealth. read more

He apologized for my experience & said he spoke to his staff about not cleaning up with chemicals around customers who are eating/drinking. I really appreciated that and was happy to give them 2nd chance. My mom and I got a pretty good tasting Cold Brew w/Creme Brulee infused milk & caramel (it's called Golden Joy on the menu) and a Strawberry Cheesecake Muffin which was also good (not great) but much better than the dry Hummingbird Cake we ate at our first visit. I still don't love the atmosphere because of Lady Jane's - it would help if there were at least something on the huge windows 'separating' the two businesses...(even though I guess that's not what the owners want...) like some sort of frosted glass/decals or something... I probably won't be back because honestly the vibe just bothers me. There were two men sitting on a couch in Lady Jane's facing the coffee shop and whether or not they were looking through the window as us it felt like they were, which made me feel uneasy... Ian the barista at Birmingham roast is fantastic. He takes the time to listen to the customer. I was not familiar with the menu as I was visiting the coffee shop for the first time. He customized the honey rose iced espresso with oat milk and lavender based on what i described I liked and it was perfect! Not too sweet with strong espresso undertones and light floral hint of lavender. The shop has nice modern architecture and is in a cute part of Birmingham. Lots of outdoor seating. I waited 25 minutes to get a piece of avocado toast. I paid 8.25 plus tax. It wasn't warm, it wasn't good. When we ordered a guy can behind us and ordered a breakfast burrito. He got his food 15 minutes before we did. I had to get back in line to try to get our money back for them to finally call our name. The what seems to be the manager asked us what we were waiting for, went to the back where the food is made and came back out made eye contact but didn't say anything to us about when our food was going to be out. Always an excellent experience when going to Birmingham Roast. With a smaller store, it can be more difficult at times getting a good spot to do work, but the ample four person tables accommodate very well and I am open to more of a "community table" style then taking up the whole place for myself. A couple of comfy chairs surround a small table and the bar seating facing out the windows are great. A couple more couches and chairs are just outside the inside exit/entrance door in what appears to be a vestibule between the coffee shop and the offices next door. The array of light bulbs above the barista area provide both an excellent amount of light and also a unique design that fits and works with the space on a high level. From the display case next to the register to the far end of the counter where your drink is handed to you, the whole counter feels closed off to the customers. Very tall, and even with myself being 6', I felt that it was more difficult to engage with the baristas. The whole place was still very clean and represented what Birmingham is all about. Latte time! All the way down to the last drop the latte was smooth and aerobatic. With a bold taste up front followed by a fast retreat of flavor, each sip ends with a mellow tailed finish. My drink, a baseline latte, was wonderful until lit cooled too fast and the last couple sips were cold(probably due to air temperature being on the cooler side). Birmingham Roast uses a La Marzocco FB80 espresso machine and though it may not be a top of the line best in the business machine, it is still a great company/machine and the baristas know how to use it very well by putting out fantastic lattes and espresso drinks to their customers.
