As a person who has had 2 toe surgeries, I invest in only high quality footwear. The Encinitas Birkenstock store carries several lines of wearable shoes. I appreciated the ability to try on the different sizes and customer service and left with 3 sets of sandale. The prices of Birkenstocks across retail and online stores is very similar so I purchased mine from this brick and mortar store. Birkenstock has always been popular with the hippie crowd, but I love seeing preppy people switching to the wearable comfort of Birks. read more

So I bought another pair of Birkenstocks. The retail associate asked me what size I said I wear a 38 and I would like synthetic straps in brown. What he gave me were leather straps which are very hard to break in anyway I went back two weeks later. The girl on duty has a guest assistant manager whoever she was took a picture of them and sent it to the manager in the Del Mar store that took a few minutes. The manager in the Delmar store who manages the Encinitas store basically said they were warned too much, which is absolutely not true. I wore them three times. I also looked at the soul. There was no evidence of the soul wearing down or the inside of the shoe at this point, I'm out $165. I'm very upset and I will never shop there again and I'm gonna tell my family not to do business there. I have bought other Birkenstock shoes at another place and they were absolutely amazing after I wore them a few times, they did let me return them and I got what I needed. Alex was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable in which shoes were best for arch support and overpronation. My husband tried on several types of shoes and ended up getting the Honnef Low, which had to be ordered from another store and it was shipped to our house. These shoes weren't cheap but they support your foot. We plan on returning to get the insoles as well. After reading previous reviews, I want to add that we are a mixed race (minority) couple and didn't experience any type of discrimination. The store was busy but we were helped in a timely matter. Hopefully this means that the customer service has improved from past reviews. They have more brands than just Birkenstocks, which was nice. Parking wasn't an issue for a weekend afternoon. read more

I have plantar fasciitis, and these shoes help with the pain. They have a wonderful selection of shoes, although I have had a problem with shoe width. Some of their selection of shoes are only available on the narrow width. I have had shipping issues but have found out that PayPal auto fills the address. Therefore, two shipments went to the wrong address. The customer service is excellent. I will be purchasing more shoes from them in the future. read more

I was at encinitas birkenstock last night and was beyond disappointed with an employee who discriminated against an elderly Hispanic woman and it was chilling to watch because it was done very 'quietly' but the lady knew what happening and so did we. A very nice place to go shop. The environment overall is very nice and peaceful. You can make sure to take your time and shop. The staff usually mind their business unless you go up to them and ask for something. They are seriously lacking in knowledge when it comes to running shoes. I would go here if I needed something, but I wouldn't go here to be fitted, or to have a great customer experience. I've been shopping here for YEARS. I went to buy some Olukais for a trip, I ordered food nextdoor and sat in my car directly in front of the waiting for my food, when I went to pickup my food I noticed a stabbing sensation from the left shoe (there was a slight defect), I saw they were still in there but had closed the door for the day. I explained my situation after getting the woman's attention, and asked if they had another I could swap out for. They informed me I could come back tomorrow but wouldn't be able to help me today. I asked if they could swap it out and leave a note for the people in the morning to which she replied she was fearing being fired! This is horrible customer service, please make sure your employees feel empowered to do things like a simple exchange of a defective product. This conveniently located shop has the best sandal selection I've encountered in San Diego. Aside from Birkenstocks, they also have Chacos, Tevas, and other brands. Unlike most shops that market multitudes of flip-flips, and only flips (seriously? how many pairs of flip-flops do people need?), here you can find sandals, you know, real sandals with ankle straps that you can walk normally in. Though, yes, they also have flip-flops, including some very nice Hawaiian-style leather flip flops, if you're interested in upping your flip-flop game. The staff is friendly and helpful, once they get around to helping you, but that can take a while if they're busy. The regular prices are not particularly impressive (full MSRP, it seems), but they do have good deals on sale items. Note, however, that the sale items are often limited to a few remaining sizes. So if you're looking for a good selection of sandals, this is a fine place to find that. read more

But after the poor service and shoe quality observed today, I wont be back. while they have a good selection of shoes,my recent experience was not so good. They were out of my size for several shoes I selected, then there was the poor customer service And finally the appearance of the shoes with dirty worn soles. the service rep, took the shoe I selected to find my size and , I sat down to wait, he brings shoes out, puts them down across the room and then begins waiting on another customer, absolutely no eye contact. I walk across the store to where he left the shoes, sit down, try on 2 pairs, no contact the entire time. Both pairs of shoes showed wear on the souls and dirt. I always did go for the boy who wore socks with his Birkenstocks. Although they are not as popular as they were in the 90's, they are still one of the coolest and most comfortable shoe brands around. In Encinitas you can take your pick of colors and styles as this store is primarily devoted to the once hippie turned yuppie shoe. The carry a few other brands of comfy shoes such as real UGS and the Simple Line called Green Toe made up of all natural ingredients. Birkenstocks are their main ingredient. I wonder what generation will adopt this shoe in the future and once again make it popular. read more

Fully intending to buy a pair of Birkenstocks at full price, I drove to this store. A slightly older gentleman finally asked if I had been helped, then went back to the stock room to find the 2 sizes I wanted to try. He returned to tell me that they did not have the smaller size in the color I wanted, but did have a brown. I had to clarify if they had the other size. I was not interested in the other color, and told him so, but had to ask if I could at least try it to check the size. He brought them to me, but I never heard from him again. He busied himself with something at the cash register (the store had 3 total customers) and never said one more word to me. I found a sandal in the other size on display , decided which was the best fit, and will find them elsewhere. It seems this store does not need to work hard at customer service, which surprises me in this age of online shopping. read more

He knew a lot about the different shoe types, which is best for what exercise you do, pronating issues, etc. I ended up getting a really good shoe called Bindi by Hoka. Word to the Wise Online Shopper: make the trip in to the store!! I am a huge online shopper because I love getting the best possible deal. So I had a pair of Birkenstocks in my shopping cart for a while and couldn't decide on size but was CERTAIN of the style I wanted. Well, I couldn't commit to spending close to $200 on a pair of shoes I've never tried on, so I decided to go in to the store to try them on. After speaking with the owner, I found out they didn't have my size in stock. Bummer, but the owner was kind enough to give me some other styles in my size to try (while she called other stores for my original choice) and I ended up falling in love with a totally different style than I had set out for! They were so comfortable that I forgot to ask the price but was happy to find they were cheaper than online! Double win! The owner of this shop is so kind and I cannot recommend coming here enough. Yesterday before heading to the fair I decided I wanted a pair of Birkenstocks however since we were in a time crunch I decided to skip the shoes and head straight to the fair- little did I know they actually had a Birkenstock booth there! All employees were nice and welcoming but Alex went above and beyond. He took the time to talk to me about all the styles and gave me multiple pairs to try on even when they were busy. After trying on the different styles and colors I finally decided on a pair and he allowed me to put them on hold so I didn't have to lug them around the fair all day. When we came back he recognized us right away and brought out the shoes but I had changed my mind and wanted another color. Since they didn't have it in my size he took down my info and told me he would call around tomorrow to different stores and give me a call with the results and he sure did! This morning I got a call from him informing me of the nearest location that had the shoe while also telling me that he put them on hold for me. I was in there tonight at about 5ish. I walked into the store prepared to buy a pair if HOKAS, some ZIONIC sandals. There was one woman cashing out, and then she left. The girl working there never acknowledged me or asked if she could help me. I had to ask her if she could help me. I asked which HOKAS were good for walking, she goes "All of them" then walked away. I picked out a couple pair and again had to find her to ask her to bring me them out. She was texting. She brings them out and sits them down, walks away, never asked me how they felt.... Another size, ZILCH. Then I asked her about a good pair of sandals for walking, she pointed to some hanging up, and I asked her to bring me a pair... brings them out walks away, back to her texting. Visitied this store for the first time the other day. There were 3 Sales staff and customers with 1 customer's business being concluded. I wandered the store for 6 to 7 minutes but NOT once did any of the Staff greet me or even look my way. I left for 10 minutes, went back into the store and again no greeting or interest in me. They have a wide variety of high quality shoes, it is where I found "Hoka" the best shoe I've ever had, in fact I bought 2 pair. I experienced a manufacture malfunction, unfortunately, and needed a return them. I worked with Alex who is very knowledgeable, (amazing customer service, thank you) and helped me a great deal, I was able to replace my shoes, and was treated so well through all of it. I walked in and asked for sandals, and got a blank stare from the cute girl at the counter. I repeated the word sandals 3 times to make sure she heard me right. Surely she knows what the word means but I got worried for a second. I was then informed that this store does not have sandals, which is concerning as I thought Birkenstock was a main source of sandals. Therefore I asked for the mens shoes so I can verify if they have sandals. Upon being redirected to the mens shoes, I saw an entire section of what I would have called sandals. I asked her what she called this kind of shoe, and she wasn't sure but she would just call it more of an open shoe. I picked out a pair of sandals that I liked and she was able to find my size, and I walked out pleased with my sandals, but not so pleased with the educational levels of the employees at a store that sells sandals. read more

First of all, they have other brands of shoes besides Birkenstocks. I thought they would only have that brand (like a "vans" store) but they had uggs and other brands. I bought my first pair of Birkenstocks today. Since they were pricey it took a while for me to decide on a pair and the sales associates were all friendly and I didn't feel annoying for trying on multiple pairs. They were honest about what ones were harder to break in and what not, so I appreciated that. Overall it was a good experience and I already want another pair :) read more

The ladies at this store are SO very helpful. I had a torn achilles, was just about to move to France and was having a very hard time finding shoes that I could tolerate, or potentially tolerate, after I would be able to walk again. I must have tried on everything at least twice, ended up buying 3 pairs of shoes and a pair of boots and then exchanged 2 of them for different color/size within a day or two. Not an easy customer, but they were so patient and helped me graciously. I wear my Olukai boots practically every day in France, they are my favourites! They have a great selection of shoes for any foot issues and comfort in general. If they had Fit Flop clogs and Haflinger slippers, I would've bought everything here. read more

This location has a wider variety of shoes (and colors) than the Old Town location. They seem to have every type of comfort shoe (Uggs, Sanita, Mephisto, Vibram, ...) as well as Birkenstocks. They are in the Lumberyard strip mall in the same parking lot as SoulScape and just south of Whole Foods. There is parking in the lot or on the main street. The employees are pleasant and helpful. I went in looking for a certain Sanita clog I had seen on the Sanita website. The Sanita site says try to shop locally for their shoes if you can. Birkenstock said they could order it from Sanita but that they would be final sale. The Sanita website has the offer of returns and exchanges, so I have to go with the online instead of local. read more
