Let's talk about Birdee and the Domino development! I think most people who live in the neighborhood are pretty taken with the park itself, especially during quieter weekdays, while knowing that the general complex, and ambitions of its real estate mavens, are being massively overdeveloped, and probably leading to some unnecessary rent hikes. Only a dozen or so people were ever seen at the (very cute) ice rink this past winter, and the retail offerings along the Kent Ave side mostly just include a nearly block-long high-end "weed and lifestyle store". It's attractive and female-founded, so let's give it a chance to thrive. While only the Refinery itself can tell you its current occupancy numbers, anyone on Grindr can confirm the new Equinox is well-populated. Enter Birdee, a new "all day café" - from some experienced team or other. Prices for some of their sandwiches (north of $24) would be shocking at the Polo Lounge. The coffee offerings are more manageable and are fine. A croissant I ordered tasted like any other croissant in Williamsburg (how much can you do there really?) while my tuna melt ($17) came on a sort of lukewarm thin round pastry and was a mass of conflicting tempertatures and textures, and didn't taste like much at all. I was confused. The service made me think of the kind vs. nice debate that perpetually rages about NYC vs. LA. They were nice, but not warm, both times I went. The space is the biggest draw, with pretty arched cathedral windows giving you great views of Kent Avenue's billboards. There is ample, comfortable seating and their Wi-Fi works. The space is nicely spread out, and it bleeds around a corner and into the lobby of the Refinery itself. Sadly, only one bathroom for all. Napkins, straws, water, etc. are placed in odd locations and strangely aren't brought to you by your server (you order at the counter, and you get a number which you place on your table), even if you order a small sandwich that costs more than some dinner entreés in fancy midtown restaurants. The music is the biggest indicator, besides the prices/food, that the operation isn't quite running on all cylinders yet: loud, blaring, beat-heavy EDM seems to be locked into a dance of death with those on laptops, and those having meetings, or simply in conversation with one another. The music seems to be asking, "just how good ARE your noise canceling headphones?" Customers come equipped. The crowd seems to be all-post-Equinox, wearing high end loungewear and expensive exercise garments. Not as many suits, Thank God. To its credit, Birdee is waaaaay more together than Pura Vida, Domino's Northernmost competition, in THAT whole under-occupied office complex past N 12th. PV struggled to make me a cold brew in under 25 minutes on my initial visit, and can take a long time to get food to you (it has since improved, and remains surprisingly popular). I like Birdee's layout, it has a nice location, and we're losing a lot of our cafés, so these new offerings remain necessary. Birdee is hardly "all-day" as it is closed some days and closes by 4 on the days it is open. But it is there. And hopefully it will get better. read more

What a lovely experience! The staff is super sweet and the ambiance is perfect for working / hanging with friends. I got the BEC on brioche bread which gave it a soft texture and melt in your mouth kind of moment. Wow, Birdee, you did it again. This time, we had the NYT's reviewed churro croissant, which has a dollop of dulce de leche. It was very tasty; however, we actually all enjoyed the Boston Cream croissant more! The Boston Cream croissant not only had a delicious creamy filling, but was coated in a thin layer of dark chocolate - it is a must-order! This relatively new bakery located in iconic Domino Sugar Factory building in Williamsburg. They have very creative baked goods both sweet and savory with a twist of Brazilian flavor. The place have very chilled atmosphere and roomy to gather with some friends to share their coffee and desserts. This morning, on 1/24/2026, I left my home, which is about a block or so away, on the coldest day we have had so far this winter and expected to receive the great service that I normally receive when I go to your cafe. Though today, I was appalled by the treatment that I received from your manager, I believe his name is Adam. I have observed him, since I have been coming to the cafe now for several months, and he is "selective" on whom he greets and helps. He is prone to "only greet" people of a certain look and background, predominantly young Caucasian folks. Well, I do not fit within that category, so I have not ever gotten a response, a greeting or even conversation from him. Your other staff members are quite delightful when I have come in. Well today, I ordered a Danish, a hashbrown and a latte, so my stuff cost me a little over $25. Well let's see, I reside in Williamsburg, born here, so we can agree that I can visit any establishment, though decided to stop in here because of your very friendly staff except for the manager, so yes I would expect the said manager to lead by example, though I was not surprised for him to side with the couple who I was made to feel uncomfortable by instead of me. Story of occurrence: As I sat working on my laptop, there was a couple in front of me on the picnic table. The man, a Caucasian man put his hand on his woman's back, raised her blouse, where I can see the back of her bra and continued to rub and touch in quite an erotic manner and she sat there enjoying it as you can see from her reaction as she stopped eating and drinking to fully immerse in the moment. I pointed this out, as it was making me feel very uncomfortable, and it triggered me as "public displays of affection" does make me very uncomfortable. Now if this was bad, its up to the person viewing it, to interpret, right. It was then that your said manager came over and spoke to them softly and slipped a "gift card" and told them he apologized if they were made to feel "uncomfortable" because I said something. This in itself was quite DISRESPECTFUL on many levels. Why? Your manager did not one minute come over prior to this atrocious behavior to enable the uncomfortable and weird behavior of this couple that was participating in "an erotic display of touching in public" where others just looked and rolled their eyes. Plus, it was early on a Saturday morning and there were families in the cafe, with children in their strollers and also walking right by the couple. Then the manager came over and told me to leave. I looked at him in disbelief and wondered why. So, I asked him and he said it was time to leave in a very aggressive manner. I told him that he would have to provide a box for my food and to give me an explanation as to why he was forcing me out of the cafe, when this has never happened before. I have spent over $500 in the past coming here many times after my neighbor recommended this cafe. He came over with a box though nothing to put my latte in. I asked him if I should put the latte in the box and then he came back with a cup. Then he stood over me, looking at me very rudely and aggressively. I asked him why he was standing over me and he said, "I need to make sure you leave". At this point, he was creating a scene and embarrassing me. I was quite disgusted that in 2026 someone could speak to someone like this and racially profile me because I did not look like the couple. Then as I gathered myself and my belongings, he followed me to the door and continued to make me uncomfortable, I almost tripped trying to get out as fast as I could, because I did not know if he was going to become physical with me. Just as I started to walk faster, the manager then started to become louder and telling me to leave and he got on the phone and called the NYPD to come to remove me from the establishment. At this point, I was outraged at the level of disrespect, the standing over me and then he decided so I opened the door an to push me out the door and said he would call the police. He then called the police, and I waited because I wanted to report that he verbally abused me and then pushed me out. I then called the police to make a police report. Again, I am so DISGUSTED and to think I have recommended so many people. To racially profile someone in 2026 is quite disgusted and when I had asked him earlier about who was in charge over him and he refused to give me contact information. This is an individual that should not be working in my neighborhood. He has atrocious customer service, and I hope you can know who you hire because I have seen quite a lot of businesses that do not last in this area. The Chicken Ceasar sandwich is a huge sandwich worth the $20 price. Definitely share it with someone, I had a hard time finishing it alone. There's a unique combination of spices and flavors that other chicken sandwiches get wrong. I highly recommend this. I also got the Boston Cream Pie which really surprised me. The filling isn't typical of other pastries, I would describe it as whipped Ice Cream. It's very light and delicious. For it's area, the prices are pretty standard.
