Always an interesting and culinarily rewarding experience. We dropped by for a Saturday breakfast prior to shopping the Farmer's Market outside and browsing thru Crompton Collective. We both had egg sandwiches - Marc had his as it comes on an incredible Brioche roll and I as usual subbed the brioche for seeded whole wheat bread in an attempt to eat a bit more healthfully. Wonderful as usual. We love this place. Not only is the food great but the people watching is a great feature. In past visits there was a very long line to order and tables difficult to score due to long term laptop sitters but this Saturday things moved well and we found a table on which to place our number sign right away. Not sure whether this was due to 9 am being earlier than the students rise or some other reason. As the Canal district transformation continues to evolve due to the Woo Sox (former PawSox) development in the area, I am sure we will encounter more changes. Breads are good (but I have encountered some burnt bottoms, not going to lie). Their sandwiches and quiche can also be inconsistent. If it's good, it's great though! Baked goods are meh - cookies usually taste like overpowering baking soda. Enjoy their pizza nights and live music! read more

Well, I'd like to give this place a higher review, but I'm not sure how to really rate it, to be honest... I have a love-hate relationship with Birch Tree Bakery... In many ways, this place is seriously overrated and I can't justify the amount of foot traffic and hype this place gets for overpriced meal options which feature a slice of burnt bread and what otherwise are cheap and often vegetarian ingredients. To be fair, some of their bread loaves are supposed to have the harder texture and consistency to them, but are just not designed to be served in the fashion they are because it makes them tough. But I've found very few items here that seem to be magnificent. That being said, here is what they do succeed at: #1 They do superior job at is their Pizza. The Pizza is expensive, sometimes they skimp on the toppings, but their Pizza is ABSOLUTELY Fantastic and they use excellent quality ingredients on it and learned the secret of making a good crust. #2 Rosemary and Olive Bread Loaves: Both are made very well and are very good, probably their best in my opinion. But only buying the whole bread for yourself to use at home. I've been very disappointed any time I've had a meal option that uses their bread. The pastries are expensive, super dry and burnt. I don't know what it is, but they many times overbake their pastry items like the scones and cookies which tend to be dry, and lately the scones don't even look like a scone but are random shaped bites which are smaller and burnt. Cocktails are wicked expensive here and watered down and just mediocre. It used to seem more fun going here in times past, because it wasn't so overly busy and stuffy inside. It's so loud between the people who visit here and the music and activities going on that you can't really enjoy yourself. It wasn't always like that. I understand the temptations and blessings of Success, and this place has grown a lot and expanded to where they have also added new segments to their kitchen to keep up with the demand, but it's taken a lot of the ambiance away from when it was more simple in the beginning. But long story short, stick with the Pizza Options and the Freshly Baked Bread. read more

A great place to get coffee and a bite to eat. Both things are made with quality ingredients and by people who know what they're doing. They seem to always have a live band and the place is always hopping. Expect a wait if you're getting food; the line to order quickly gets out of hand but it's worth the wait. If your here just to get coffee, which I often am, there's a convenient, and much shorter, to go line. I always stop by this place when I'm near Kelley Square and I recommend it to anyone. read more

The first thing that stands out is how warm and inviting it is. You are greeted by a lovely live band. The space is very open and trendy with exposed bricks, rafters and ductwork. It has a grab and go service style with bring to your seat service. It has a mix of tables booths and benches. The subway pancake was amazing! Ok ok so I'm reviewing it for a second time only so that I can give my rant - who is Brittany and why is her dang toast so darn good? I mean I've been doing great- lost quite a few pounds even after finding Birch Tree Bakery - but this Brittany and her toast combinations are killing me! (Well not literally but she is contributing to a growing foodie addiction) I mean I thought the local honey drizzled over whipped cream cheese on cranberry pecan toast was something but then I saw today's melted cheddar on rye and .....yup I'm sitting at the bar at Birch Tree skipping work so I can indulge my inner foodie. Birch Tree has become a regular feature of our Worcester Saturdays this summer; after visiting the farmers' market (and usually before heading downstairs to the Crompton Collective to browse), it's nice to get a coffee or a beer, hear some music, and buy a loaf or two of beautiful bread to take home. The space and the atmosphere are lovely, and it's both refreshing and encouraging to see something this cool happening in Worcester, so we are definitely fans. Even the invariably long queue is fine, since it means the business is doing well and likely to stick around. The one thing that would go a long way to making this place perfect would be some vegan options; at present, the only thing on the menu that's vegan as written is the coriander-raisin toast with PB & banana (which I admit is the Platonic ideal of PB toast: YUM). All the other vegetarian options have cheese, which can obviously be omitted, but it would be nice to have more choices, and with so many restaurants in and around Worcester recognizing the market for vegan food, it would be a welcome change if Birch Tree had a few creative offerings for their herbivorous customers. read more

I really, really want to like this place and have visited at least 6 times. It's nice to support local establishments. However the service and reliability of this place is so hit-or-miss I really can't recommend the place. I've given it a fair shake at this point and likely won't be back. Here's what's good: The place is really spacious with a boho-chic vibe and supports local artists and musicians. The staff are nice. When I've been able to get the food I want, it has been good. Here's the bad: To one's complete disbelief, this is a bakery and they don't sell loaves of bread for the first three hours they are open. The line to order is UNACCEPTABLE. I have waited over 30 minutes in line to order a sandwich and then an additional 30 minutes to get the sandwich. This problem could be easily be resolved in one of two ways: 1. Have (several) more registers that will take food orders. 2. Become full-service with servers so people can order from their table. It's nice that they support local music but listening to a loud seven-person band at 10:30 on a Saturday morning is horrid. On several occasions they do not have what I try to order (see bread loaf situation above). I have stood in the 30 minute line to find out they don't have the sandwich I'd like anymore. They don't serve any decaf espresso-based drinks despite the fact they are a coffee shop/bakery (except it's not coffee, it's "java"). Unfortunately, even though you've been in line for 30 minutes, "we aren't taking lunch orders for another 10 minutes...oh and sorry we don't say that anywhere." If this place could streamline everything *a lot* more, I'd go here often. Until then, I'm genuinely sad to say that I'm out. read more

Ok so overall this place is pretty bomb. And a much needed addition to Worcester's dingy ass Kelly Square - which is now thanks to the mill building's restoration and revival, now starting to brush off its hobo jacket and climb on the silvertone to high class town... Timing is everything I could gather right away at my first experience at Birch tree. I visited on a whim, headed out of the city with my hunny. We happened not to realize it was mid morning on Sunday - Ahem BRUNCH TIME FOLKS. So that said it was a tad of a challenge for parking close, (street only - or BBQ place across the street) and the line quite literally was around a corner, out the door and halfway down the hall of a charming mill building it is set in. Had we come at a more opportune time than this, I'm sure it would have been a lot more positive. The wait was really quite long, and when we asked for our order to go- since a table was NOT going to happen- they took yet longer to procure the containers in which we took our food on the road. I was a little surprised by the menu. Again, not your typical Worcester offerings, somewhat limited but very new and exciting flavors and combinations. Breakfast sandwiches are of those things that surprised me - there is only ONE on the menu. It has ham and sausage and white cheddar on a biscuit - excellent but thats the ONLY one you can order. Outside of that its a-la-carte for the bread, cheese, meat and topping. Of which they are reluctant to do during such peak times as well. The coffee is wonderful, but stick to regular - they heavy hand the flavor syrups in bottles for flavors here - not bad, just not worth the 5 bucks for a hazelnut latte. I had the feta and olive oil toasts - and my GOODness after such a wait it was a slice (literally) of heaven. Herbed, but only lightly and I asked for extra feta, (because I am actually a Feta cheese monster after 5pm) and they didn't skimp. Most definitely should have ordered like a truckload more of those. He had the sandwich and loved it but after a bite of mine he admitted, he should have also gone for a wheelbarrow of the feta toasts. The baked goods are of note here, - fruits in the peach cobbler, brioches, muffins and pastries are all very fresh and cranked out here, seemingly like crazy. The place is cool, with the old school loft style -chic vibe that Worcester needs, but heres what i found more than hilarious... as I was waiting on my food to be boxed up I had a seat at the end of the bar and had the opportunity to judge the atmosphere. I noticed this wasn't the place where a bunch of hungover college kids from any of the nearby universities came for a greasy belly warmer... no no but this clientele was the opposite - middle aged, pretty, bored housewives with young children and babies, .. some of who dragged their friends in after yoga, or boyfriends quite obviously. No surprise, women basically run and dictate how EVERY industry flows - but then looking at the employees - not a single woman ! - In fact all of the staff here are your poster example of a 20-something Hipster guy,.. handle bar mustache, craft beer drinking, untamed beard, fauxhawk styling, half ass fake smiling, buddy holly glasses wearing -Hipster dudes! OK, as a Hartford area resident, I'm getting kind of jealous of Worcester, with places like this. Had a fantastic lunch here recently...almost too many great choices to pick from. The space and the atmosphere is great. Large, open and very modern, without being cold. And get this -- they had live music...at lunch! I can't think of anything to quibble with, really. BirchTree is about as good as it gets, for lunch anyway. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Worcester. read more

I hereby dub this the Clooney salad (because it's perfectly dressed.) Let me first apologize for screwing up the pic. It looked amazing on delivery. Eye candy. Spinach arugula with watermelon radish grapefruit toasted almonds and feta or goat cheese (still can't discern the two). I added the turkey b/c without meat salad is for rabbits. The dressing is so light and perfectly applied I can only imagine it was massaged into the greens by a Swedish maiden. The staff here is always courteous and cool. Been here dozens of times and I can confirm consistent quality and charm. They've added booze, craft beer and much needed seating. I've put off writing this review b/c I don't want any more people discovering this place. But the experience warrants the accolades. Oh and the owner is as sweet as apple pie. read more

Awesome spot for breakfast or lunch in Worcester. Their freshly baked bread everyday is also delicious. We bought a loaf for a baked cranberry Brie dip and it was so good. There was a ton of flavor and it tasted very fresh. Their food and coffee are also great. I came here for breakfast and missed the long line. The place is always packed and you order at the counter then when your food is ready they bring it to you. I got the apple salad with goat cheese and it was so good and also a very large portion! My sister got the turkey sandwich and it was huge and she raved about it. My mother got the quiche and was also very impressed! They sometimes have a live band playing music as well. I love the feel of BirchTree. It's has this funky pseudo industrial feel but still manages to be homey and inviting. I'm always impressed by the eclectic crowd in here - from business casual clearly on their way to work folks to college aged kids to construction workers with hard hats under their arms. The only difficulty I have here is trying to avoid the bread - which is damn near impossible. Thank goodness I don't have a gluten allergy - I'd come here and make myself ill anyways! What an amazing atmosphere! This place looks and smells amazing! They don't have a lot of vegan options, but they're happy to help you out! I also heard they're expanding the menu, which is always a good thing! We had the marinaded veggies and hummus sandwich, without the feta. It was really really good! They have great coffee, and a huge selection of teas. Their location is pretty cool too, in the same building as seed to stem (a really cool oddity store), and crompton collective (an antique store). Their product is delicious and their ambiance is awesome, but if you come on your work lunch break make sure you have lots of time because sandwiches (although amazingly delicious) take an average of 20 minutes to make. Other meals take an excessively long time too. I don't know if they're baking the bread for the sandwiches to order, which would be a little more acceptable, but if not, then the wait time is a little excessive. Environment is gorgeous and eclectic. But if you need to get speedy work done, the wifi is EXTREMELY slow. It's possible they have one router near the register, but this space is huge... They need to up their wifi speed or install an extra router or two actually in the dining area near the customers. Another suggestion is, there doesn't seem to be a lot of outlets. They would be very easy to install for customers, but I understand if this local business is trying to save on electricity costs their first years open. They also should have a stronger and more supportive online social community presence. A lot of loyal customers post pictures or reviews on this beautiful local business and yet this local business doesn't show support or recognition for their customers. I love supporting local businesses, but spending $3-15 a day can get expensive very fast. A rewards system would be a great thing to show love back to the community that support them. read more

I've been here many times over the years and have always loved it, so today was a huge disappointment. They no longer carry gluten free breads, so they had to convert my sandwich to a salad. I stated on the ordering app, then specifically reiterated verbally, no cheese; there was a dollop of goat cheese. And, when they came to the table to tell me they couldn't do gf bread I asked to add grilled chicken - I expected an additional charge but was charged $5.35 for about 4 small pieces of dry grilled chicken. Feeling pretty unheard and ignored. Total for 2 chai drinks (small and medium), 2 salads with 18% tips was $48. I don't think I'll be back. read more

This place was pretty cool. It's got that industrial/farmers market vibe and you know that everything is local and fresh. I went with my sister last Tuesday for lunch. I had the quiche special, which was swiss chard and cheese that day, with the lemon ginger iced tea. The iced tea was great and the flavor all together of the quiche was really good too. The crust unfortunately had a "sugar cookie" taste when it was all alone though. The cost of this meal was average. My sister ordered the turkey and bacon sandwich. They said they were out of turkey so they asked if she wanted a BLT instead. They just gave her bacon and lettuce on bread. They didn't have tomato. The cranberry mayo wasn't really flavorful and the bacon didn't taste very good either. She was extremely disappointed in her sandwich. The sandwich was very expensive also for just a couple slices of bacon and lettuce also as they didn't change the price for the dramatic change in ingredients. Overall, it's a cute place if you're looking for that hipster springy happy vibe, but the food was alright. If we return the quiche might be on the menu again, but the sandwich will definitely be changed up. read more

I would do everything computer/reading/writing related here if I lived close by. Adaptive reuse of obsolete post-industrial buildings turns me on. Feta toast was exceptional, mostly because of the toast. Turkey sandwich was good, but better because of the bread. Grilled cheese was amazing, but best with some of the turkey from the turkey sandwich. Cookies were fantastic, and made properly exquisite with Vermont Creamery Ash-Ripened Goat Cheese (sold in package) spread atop. Almond milk latte was pretty dang nice. Of the food I've sampled at BirchTree, I have most enjoyed the savory bread puddings (rotating/seasonal ingredients, served with side salad). The cafe americano is on point, and I assume other espresso drinks are also very good. You order at the counter and get a number. For drinks they call out your name; food is delivered to your table. Water is self-serve and you bus your own table. Pretty crowded and noisy during busy weekend hours (sometimes additional decibels from live music band); energetic vibe but perhaps not the right place if you like to enjoy a meal/drink in a more quiet/relaxing atmosphere. read more

I have been hearing good things about this place decided to check it out. I ordered the special Frittata with side salad. After a bit of debate regarding the appearance of Cilantro & my other nemesis Grapefruit. The side salad is baby field greens with house pickled veggies. Rather aggressively pickled but still yummy. The Frittata has mushrooms, fresh cheese and garlic along with hand made bacon. I ordered a dark Sumatran which is so yummy. Will I be back? Absolutely! First off. I love the interior. It's bright, spacious and high ceilings. Can't beat the ambiance. First time here and as always I usually order 1 if each item. The toast was wow. Crispy outside. Perfect soft and chewy inside. The butter and jam made it perfect. The almond croissant was good but ate 1 half and all I got was a salty taste and not enough almond filling. The other half had so much of it it kept oozing out as I was biting into it. The texture of the croissant was good , buttery but was somehow not perfect. The chocolate croissant was a bit too crisp. As you can tell. It is a bit too browned on the top. Caused it to be hard. Enough chocolate filling but I will have to come back and try it again before I can judge it.
