It had been a while since I came back to Shrewsbury Street in Worcester but here I was. It was lunch and my son and I wanted pizza. I remember two of my children going to school out in Worcester and many visits to Volturno. Where else would I go in Worcester for pizza but here. We walk in to high ceilings, large windows and clean polished woodwork. Like a restaurant in a museum. The server Abby, was great. Attentive knowledgable and passionate about her restaurant. So- I wanted broccoli rabe and sausage sandwich. That was gone from the menu. Abby convinced me to try the Amatriciana pasta. It was amazing. Total shocker. It was as good as my favorite North End Spots. Why 5 stars- The excitement around the food creations. Quality and authentic Italy. The thing that caught me was the place still looked brand new. It was Tuesday, and 5 p.m. was soon approaching. We weren't far from Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, so there really wasn't a decision to make. Two-for-Tuesday at Volturno! With the rain and wind outside, we hoped the restaurant might be a little quieter than usual. That thought disappeared the moment we turned into the parking lot. We grabbed the first open space we saw and headed for the door. Score! We snagged the last window table just as another party was leaving. Choosing the first pizza was easy. Their Polpette (meatball) pizza has long been my perennial favorite. Since it was Two-for-Tuesday, though, we decided to branch out and try their Eggplant Pizza as our second pie. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Waters appeared almost immediately, and despite the restaurant already bustling, both pizzas arrived surprisingly quickly. Perhaps that's because Volturno bakes its Neapolitan-style pizzas in a 900° wood-fired oven using dried oak, where they cook in just 60 to 90 seconds. Both pizzas arrived piping hot with tasty thin crusts and were cooked perfectly. There was just one problem--the Eggplant Pizza was so good that it ended in a dead heat with my preferred Polpette. That's high praise. More than half a pizza came home with us, but little was left by the end of the night. If you haven't tried Volturno you're missing out on some great pizza, whether it's Tuesday or any other day of the week. read more

Fantastic experience, food and service were amazing, great atmosphere. However, be cautious of the "suggested gratuity" at the bottom of the check. The suggested 20% gratuity for a check of 87.21 was listed as 20.70. Not too much of a big deal, but it was 3 dollars more than it shook be. The actual 20% should be 17.44. I cannot say enough good things about Volturno! To start, the restaurant kindly accommodated my 8-person group during the busy Monday/Tuesday BOGO pizza deal, and allowed ample time for our group to arrive and order. Our waitress was kind, gave excellent recommendations, and checked in with us an appropriate amount. When we began ordering, I noticed Volturno has an excellent array of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. I personally got the "pear pressure," which was a delicious pear spritz. For appetizers, my group found the arancini and the brussels sprouts to be a hit. Lastly, I tried eight pizzas due to the BOGO deal, and all of the choices were excellent; however, I will always be a tried-and-true pepperoni person (which was yummy). Overall, I would highly recommend anyone try Volturno, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays during the BOGO deal. I lived in Worcester for three years and somehow never made it to this place despite hearing good things about it constantly. We finally stopped in during a recent trip visiting some friends. They have a pretty extensive drink menu which I appreciate. I ordered the monky business and I have to admit, I was disappointed in it. It just wasn't that enjoyable. Don't think I didn't wash down every single last drop in there. It certainly got the job done in the intoxicating department. The service was great and the food was wonderful. To start, we ordered the arancini which were delicious. Crispy exterior and creamy interior with a nice savory bite. We ordered the due modi pizza with sliced potato, cape cod potato chips, mozzarella, provolone, scallion, garlic oil. This was DELICIOUS. I love the local flare with the cape cod chips however I don't recall there being any actual chips on that pizza. Maybe the cocktail and subsequent beers I consumed got to me. We arrived early on a Saturday evening (about 4:30) and there was a line to wait for a table so we opted to sit at the bar. We decided to have drinks and appetizers. We ordered a pepperoni pizza (they are small), bruschetta and brussel sprouts. My husband had a beer and my drink was called Love Potion. We also got dessert, he ordered the Tiramisu (it was delicious) and I ordered the cheesecake (I didn't care for the thick graham cracker bottom, but the cheesecake part was very good). Great spot for pizza! Our waitress was very friendly and made a great recommendation to add hot honey to our pepperoni pizza - what a game-changer! Caesar salad came lightly dressed - exactly how we like it. Even the Diet Coke was perfectly crisp and syrupy. Went for lunch a few weeks back. Atmosphere was good, they didn't have outdoor seating open just yet. It was busy but with the high ceilings it didn't ever feel too noisy or congested. We were promptly waited on but then it felt like there was someone new at our table each time which felt confusing as to who we should waive down when we needed something and when it came to tipping. The food was good. I think for me it wasn't as good as I was anticipating. I have had 1-2 pasta dishes at a catered event a couple years back and I wasn't impressed at all but who knows when it was picked up or how it was kept before serving so I didn't put any weight into that. This was my first time dining in person and trying the pizza. We ordered a pepperoni pie and the burratta appetizer. The app was so fresh, good quality cheese and meat and accompaniments. I thought the bread it came with was equally tasty but there was only two slices and two of us, making me feel like most of the app was wasted unless you wanted to pick up a fork. The pizza was underwhelming for all the hype I've heard. The pepperoni was extremely greasy and there was no support in the under carriage of the pizza so it just flopped all over. I had the chance to try out Volturno's function space adjacent to the restaurant area for my organization's Christmas party in January. I would recommend it for intimate parties of 40 or less but I believe their max limit is higher than that amount. It's a clean, warm, pretty, and intimate establishment. I enjoyed their decor of the rack of wine and a poster on types of pastas. The food tasted great, I would say an overall rating of 8.5/10. The apps were great, I tried Focaccia for the first time and was surprised at how soft yet crunchy the bread is and paired with ricotta, a beautiful savory taste. My only poor experience with the food service was the tiramisu, it was quite bitter from the coffee and had soggy finger lady's . We ordered the Beet & Mozzarella, Roasted Cauliflower, Funghi Pizza, and the Capri Pizza. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. The capri pizza had a garlic sauce that was perfectly balanced and the roasted cauliflower laid on a layer of fresh pesto. My reason for a reduced star was not because of the food, it is due to the service. Thomas the owner was incredibly sweet and polite. We came in on Sunday afternoon. There were four adults and a 7 year old. One in our party deals with immune compromised issues and so we asked to sit outside. The hostess told me they couldn't accommodate 5 people as all the tables were four tops. (Aside...all of the outdoor seating was vacant). I asked if we could pull a 5th chair up or sit side by side as a two and three top party. She said they usually won't do that but left to check with the manager who was sitting alone at a nearby table. After a short conversation... incredibly short...the hostess returned and told me she couldn't accommodate us ,and by the way, they were not sitting outside anyhow that time. . Huh? She did give us a large table a bit away from others, so it was a compromise that we made work, as we were sort of a captive audience at that point. OK. On to the food. We ordered a margarita pizza with mushrooms. The mushrooms were full flavored. Bravo. The pizza would have been much better if it wasn't loose and floppy near the middle. I suspect it was undercooked. We spilt a Caesar salad. Really nice to see actually anchovies served with it. Sadly, the salad itself was soggy as it had been dressed too soon, I suspect, and it needed lemon, but all in all a pretty good salad. Inventive drink list. I really liked my "Otto". Without the hostess issue, I'd recommend this place as a good place to rendezvous with friends, and would give the food 3.5 stars, possibly four if the minor quibbles like floppy pizza and soggy lettuce were addressed. But as one who perhaps has spent too many years in customer service, the lack of accommodation during seating is a deal breaker for me. I won't be back. Unfortunately. read more
