My husband ordered the double hickory burger (I think that's what it was called) A HUGE burger arrived with beef patties, onion rings, bacon, cheese...etc. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich that arrived with Frank's hot sauce, pepper jack cheese, lettuce and tomato. We shared 1 small order of tater tots, plenty for 2 people!! (they were crispy and had a good taste, however we wished there was cheddar cheese sauce on the menu...it would have taken the tots to another level) 2 of my kids ordered the cheeseburger kids meals (comes with fries and a drink) My daughter ordered the kids chicken nuggets (also comes with fries and a drink) The kids enjoyed their meals. The verdict? My husband and I both agree!! The burger and chicken were really tasty BUT the meat to bun ratio was way off for us! I wanted to check this place out because I had seen it featured on an episode of Man v. Food. Since I had a marathon to run the next day, I didn't order the challenge burger. Instead I ordered the Double super bacon burger with tater gems. It sounded plenty big. One thing you must have in Idaho is their fry sauce. It makes your fries or tater tots taste really good! They brought out my gigantic burger with a knife stuck through the center. That's a nice touch for a burger lover! I was there at about 1pm and the place was packed. I had to wait a bit to be seated. What a place!! This is such a fun place to come to enjoy a really good hamburger. It's not to spendy and if you get the 1lb burger it's great to share :) It's such a cute place. It has an old school vibe to it. All over the walls you can read rules to challenges they have and the prizes you are able to obtain by winning. The Big Juds challenge is eating the 1lb or 2lb burger in under 30 mins plus sides and if you complete it you can get you picture on the wall and can buy a shirt. The food is super delicious. We ordered a double cheese burger, a single hickory burger and a large tot. Both were great but we liked the double cheese burger the best between the two burgers. This has been one of my favorite "pig out" places in Boise since I went to college here. Come with an appetite - the portions are HUGE. I don't like hamburgers, so I appreciate that they include other items on the menu such as chicken strips and finger steaks. Their homemade fries are my favorite they are cut in huge slices and fried to perfection. Their pricing is awesome and for what you get is more than reasonable. This finger strip basket (see picture below) was only $9.99! Last night I had Emily as my server and she was wonderful. This place is near and dear to my heart... I've been going to Big Jud's since I was in elementary school. I grew up in Idaho Falls and got to enjoy the one in Ashton when we'd return from camping trips. It was one of the things I was most excited for when I moved here for college at BSU. It is exactly what you think it is. A local spot with big, unique burgers, hot and salty fries and friendly Idaho service. Did you know that they deep fry the bacon?? I mean...you can't go wrong. My favorites are the Hawaiian and the Ortega, because they are interesting and well balanced. I'm not a fan of thick cut fries, so I always get the tots. They are crispy, golden and perfectly salted. The renovated space is awesome. Really gives it that 50's vibe. Haven't been to the Meridian spot yet, but I'm jazzed to try it. I don't love their buns, but that is purely a personal preference for pretentious bread. :) While I love this burger joint, my tastes have evolved over the years and I have since fallen in love with other burgers. Ok, first off...WOW!! The sizes are perfect and I love the fact that I ordered a large order of tots and when I got finished I still hadn't found the bottom of the barrel for the tots. I also got the privilege of hearing one of the most interesting things I've heard in a long time. A young lady was taking a friend out and she had never had fry sauce. She told her friend that was an Idaho thing.. I had to smile a bit on that one. I love the variety on the menu. Salads, chicken sandwiches, and then what everyone really comes in for, the burger list. I always order a black and bleu whenever I first visit a burger joint so I went with that. It was perfection! It was a very boring burger, though I ordered the bacon bleu cheese and mushroom burger. When you eat a burger like that, it is supposed to drip and be messy. Dry as a bone! I am a burger lover and this restaurant is easily in my top 5 for best burger joints, and I have eaten burgers all over the country. If you recall it appeared on Man vs Food a few years ago where Adam Richman completed the Big Jud's challenge. Anyway I have had quite a few burgers here and have never been disappointed. The beef is sourced locally from RR Ranch and always fresh, and the veggies are always crisp and fresh as well. For me a burger has to have a great bun, and let me tell you these buns don't disappoint! They hold up really well to the juices of the burger and tomato. As I said in my opening line, every thing is big here and so are the sides! A small fry is enough to feed 2 - 3 people we will just put it that way. The fries are hand cut for every order, and the tots are amazing too! I can't say enough great things about this place. I live in Oregon now but make a point to come here every time I visit. Please come here and have a burger, or chicken sandwich. If those don't do it for you they have chicken strips, halibut and shrimp as well. A Boise classic. Never had a bad meal here (I don't think anyone has?) I always stick with a burger, but their chicken looks amazing.

Man... I really wanted this to be soooo good. To the point that I even waited for the visit even though it is close to my office. Unfortunately the service was awkward but not too bad, but the food was the real issue. The fries are hand cut and large like steak fries which I like, but ironically the burger fell very short. I ordered a double bacon cheese burger, and it was dry beyond belief. The meat was so overcooked that I just ate what I could and chaulked it up to a bad experience. This was our 6th stop on Burgerpalooza, in search of the best effing burger in B-town. Oh...people...Finally! After 5 stops of ho-hummery--we have landed in a deliciousness of such magnitude you may feel the need to pound your fist on the table, moan, and high five random passers by. Seriously. Our group of burger enthusiasts gave this joint an average of 4.63 stars (I rounded up--because, well, they deserved it). They had high marks in every category, scoring several 10 out of 10's and getting darn near perfect scores from a couple of the participants. The lowest score came in the category of fries...however, the participant who gave the low score admitted she just doesn't care for thick cut fries, which is definitely what Big Jud's serves. And (!!), even with that disappointment, she still gave them nearly 4 1/2 stars. We came in here on a Friday night and they were hoppin'. There was just enough seating available for our group so, thankfully, we didn't have to wait. The ambiance is your typical no-nonsense burger joint which paired well with the food that was also no-nonsense American eats. Their burgers appear hand formed and taste totally fresh (ie: these are not your usual premade frozen patties!). The fries appear hand cut and also tasted as though they'd never seen a freezer. I paired up with another Burgerpalooza participant and together we each ordered a cheeseburger, and upon the recommendation of another diner shared a large order of fries and a soda. The soda and fries were huge and definitely ample enough for the two of us to share. The burgers were the epitome of what a standard cheeseburger ought to be--fresh, juicy burger, fresh veggies, fresh bun--perfect. I happen to love thick cut fries and these were some of the best I've ever had. The service was friendly (I think we amused them a little when we busted out our score cards and the discussion commenced). And, to top everything off...they offer a "check in discount" of 10% off! No-frills ambiance, but a lovely picture wall of those who have conquered the famous 1 pound Big Jud in one sitting. They also have a small ice cream selection and friendly, welcoming service. I get the bleu bacon burger every time. It is loaded with bleu cheese, so don't order it if you just sort of feel like it. Order it if you can't think about anything other than satiating your blue cheese yearning. A mountain of tater tots is $3 and I dare you to finish them, it can't be done, even with the delicious fry sauce that only Idaho restaurants know how to master. read more

College town burger joint. Big Juds is just that.. I'm learning to like the new restaurant. But the cheerful freindly staff has definitely made the move to the new restaurant. They all seem to be happy and proud of where they work and it makes for a fun dining experience. Always smiling and willing to give recommendations. Always just a cool attitude from everyone. The food.. I never ordered the one pound or two pound burgers. But have seen them being served every time I'm there. Funny to watch people get around a burger and take selfies. Last visit I help a family take a picture with their burger. Yes I'm that guy! Makes me laugh to! My buddy likes the rings, tots, and then the frys In that order. So we order a small order of each because we can never decide. This is a restaurant that came up on one of my Yelp searches. Although, folks in Boise don't seem to use Yelp as much as many cities, people from other cities help out by reviewing local businesses. I noticed that this had a solid 4 after many reviews so we decided to try our luck over at Big Juds. When we pulled up we were comforted with the knowledge that there were two Idaho State Troopers there. If the troopers are there, there's probably good food. Well, that's exactly what we got. We were greeted promptly and allowed to pick a location to sit. I hesitantly asked how big the regular burgers were as I had seen the hype about Man vs Food (a reality show, where they eat competitively) and saw the size of those burgers. She assured me that they were 1/4 lb burgers, at which point, I was relieved. If you are curious about it it's on Big Juds website. The fries, which come separately, come in a small which 1/2 lb and large 1 lb. I elected to choose the small which was more than plentiful. The fries are hand cut steak cut fries. Very tasty and served with fry sauce which we all know is mayo and ketchup mixed together but still good nonetheless. The burger was nicely down with many toppings and an unusual bun, more like a kaiser roll. Very good. When I checked in on Yelp it indicated that this was an offer to get a free order of fries. It also mentioned within the Yelp text that you would get the same if you checked in on Foursquare. I thought that was strange. So, I asked the wait staff about it. She said I know you get one of those with Foursquare. Let me check,she went back to the kitchen and was talking to other staffers and all we could hear was about every other word which was Foursquare. I giggled and shook my head and thought of Community Manager, Don shuddering at the mention of Foursquare. Long story short, it was no problem and the Yelp coupon (a word they never uttered by the way), was fine. Good solid burger joint. I had heard about this place for a while, and I finally made it in here for lunch while working in Boise. I LOVE burgers - seriously one of my favorite foods. I went during lunchtime, and even though it was crowded I was seated at a table right away. My waitress was great - really friendly and I didn't have to wait long for any kind of service. I like a basic cheeseburger, so that's what I went with. I also ordered onion rings, and while those were good, they weren't great. But the cheeseburger was really good. I have been wanting to go to Big Jud's for a long time, ever since I saw them highlighted on Man vs. Food several years ago. Unfortunately, Boise is a long way from our home in Utah but we finally got a chance to try Big Jud's I am glad we did. My Double Super Bacon Burger was huge, juicy, and tasty, check out the photo it is an impressive sight. The Super not only has bacon but ham as well, I love ham on a burger. HOW DOES BIG JUDS ONLY HAVE 9 REVIEWS?? Clearly, everyone's trying to not spread the word (though it was on Man vs. Food, so I think the secret's already out). The burgers here are phenomenal, whether you try to tackle a multi-pound burger or if you stick with a normal-sized one. The mushroom bacon burger is my absolute favorite, while my dad swears by the bleu bacon burger. But whatever you get, it will be delicious (the hickory burger is like a ridiculously good rodeo burger from BK). The only complaint I've heard about Big Juds is that their fries are very thick cut, but slather some fry sauce on and you'll forget about any preference for thinner fries. Their ice cream is from a local company (I believe) that some other places around Idaho have, but it's very good as well, if you have room. And as a plus, you might get some entertainment as you dine watching someone attempt to tackle a two-pound burger and a pound of fries. read more
