Its a diner.. you get what you expect. Came here looking for a quick snack. Had this place recommend by a friend. The people there were quite friendly and easy going. They were helpful talking through the menu. Food was okay but not that impressive. I mean really it was a diner. For the price it was reasonable, but I felt the sandwich was over salted. This was a fun stop for an outer towner like me! We stopped for the famous ice cream "potato " but found ourselves trying finger steaks with fry sauce too. They both were very interesting. The finger steaks were tender pieces of beef dipped in tempura and fried. The "potato " was a fun scoop of vanilla ice cream covered in cinnamon. We enjoyed both. Guy Fieri would be so disappointed if he came back to Westside Drive-In today. Unfortunately, our lunch was, for the most part, absolutely horrible. The only thing that was actually good was my husband's corned beef and Swiss dip. Everything else was a huge disappointment. The fries were mediocre at best, but the fried zucchini was downright disgusting. It didn't even resemble zucchini anymore. It was so overcooked and mushy that when my husband took a bite, the inside slid out in one long, slimy piece. It honestly looked like a booger. It was completely unappetizing, tasted awful, and to make matters worse, you only get four or five tiny pieces for $5.59. Even if they had tasted good, the portion size wouldn't justify the price. I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered a kids' grilled cheese with gems. The gems were actually good, and the fry sauce was delicious. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese was completely inedible. The moment I unwrapped it, I noticed a strong rancid smell. At first, I assumed it was just the smell of a greasy diner since we were sitting outside the restaurant. But as I brought the sandwich closer, I realized the smell was coming from the grilled cheese itself. I hoped it was just the smell and that it would taste fine, but I was wrong. It tasted every bit as rancid as it smelled. My best guess is that it was grilled in old, spoiled oil. The flavor was unmistakably rancid. My husband--who is not picky at all--took one bite and immediately spit it out. That confirmed I wasn't imagining it. For nearly $30, I ate a small handful of gems, my husband had a decent corned beef and Swiss dip, and everything else went uneaten because it simply wasn't edible. This was a total disappointment and, sadly, enough to make sure we won't be back. Westside Drive-In may have once been worthy of its television fame, but based on our experience today, it has fallen a long way. Guy Fieri...don't come back!!! read more

I was out of town brewery hopping and got a little hungry. I was looking for a place that is unique to the Boise area and a young woman I was chatting at a brewery suggested this place. She mentioned this thing called finger steaks. I had never heard of it. I was curious enough to give it a try. It's kind of a drive-through diner sort of place with interesting things on the menu. Of course, I had to try the finger steaks, which actually were delicious. I had them with cocktail sauce, but there are other sauces available. I also had a bologna sandwich. Probably haven't had that in 50 years... and never in a restaurant... they were both really good! This place has a really fun vibe to it. Cons - Meatloaf sandwich was mostly lettuce and the Meatloaf tasted oddly smoky, perhaps it was the roasted pepper ketchup. Not good. Now I am going to start this review by saying I went here for Fish and Chips...nothing else, just that. I had a craving, am a big fan of good British style fish and chips...good fish, good chips...this was neither of those! Now for fish and chips there are some open areas for what people like! This batter was more what you would dip a hot-dog in to make a corndog. It was bready, thick and heavy with little flavor. It was too doughy in the middle and choked out the taste of the fish! "Bake Potato" ice cream is such a fun treat! I love their originality of this creation so much! I take out of towners here so they can see how darling these are, but my aunt CRAVES these so much! When I go, I get EXTRA for my aunt and she keeps them in her freezer for later! I love their burgers too and their fries! I crave them and sadly that's the only thing I ever get here cause I just love them so much! The staff is so nice and they work so hard! Please tip the staff because they hustle and have so much love for what they do. Ok, my wife had it planned, and we dropped our bags in the hotel, and she said she knew exactly where we were going to get our first food. My wife is brilliant. I LOVED this place. You need to be in the mood for naughty eats and not classy tablecloth places when you go. If you do that, this place is gold. Apparently, we HAD to try the Finger Steaks, and the baked potato thing. The Finger Steaks were delicious, and probably not low fat. I loved them, and plenty of sauces around for the fries. Even that piece of bread in the picture was tasty. Now to the potato. To be honest, we weren't even sure before we went and when we ordered if the potato was an actual potato, a potato with ice cream on it, or other. It ended up being magical ice cream all around. It was one of those desserts where I ate smaller bites because I knew I would be sad when it was gone. I was right. I WAS sad when it was gone. In the five years that I have been eating at Westside drive-in, I have noticed recently that the quality is going downhill. Unfortunately yesterday was our last visit in the foreseeable future. My whole family loves Westside Drive in. We visit on average 15+ times a year. When we have out of town guests, we always make sure to bring them for a meal. We love both locations and have eaten at both many times. Within the last 3 to 4 visits, there have been little changes that have been annoying. I asked three different visits for my regular chicken Caesar salad with artichokes and they no longer offer artichokes. Forgivable though and I understand and made do . Yesterday though it was undeniable that the portion sizes are smaller and the prices remain the same. I understand shrinkflation is a real thing and the way some businesses stay afloat. Unfortunately, yesterday it was the bottom of the barrel when we ordered two different sandwiches - the French dip and the turkey and Swiss dip and felt like we ate a bread sandwich with very little meat. It was really gross. Please do not reduce the amount of meat you put in your sandwiches since the volume of meat has never been impressive . This time, though the volume of meat was so little that it tastes like it's 90% bread. I'd rather they charge a dollar or two more for a sandwich that's the same quality, than get a bread sandwich for $10. No, I didn't take any pictures of the food this time around. But looking at my previous pictures says a lot about quality from years ago anyways. The ice cream potato as always rocks and has never failed . Please keep that specialty. Please do what you can to stay open. We would forgive you and be back because we love you. You just need to know that you failed a regular local who loves you. We're taking a break for now, but will try again later. Edited to add that we were craving ice cream potatoes a few days later when we saw the Westside food truck at Kleiner Park during Potato Days. Knowing the cost for an ice cream potato is hovering right under six dollars at the restaurant, I didn't expect it to be much more at their food truck. The real reason to go though is the potato ice cream. It looks so much like a potato. It tastes like any old sundae and is really cold to keep its shape. But it's worth the trip. read more

When we came here the other night I noticed they have a cheap eats menu. Right in top was a fried bologna sandwich. A fried bologna sandwich!?! That is my childhood in 3 words. So today I stopped in to grab one. I didn't read the print on top of the board that said substitutions not allowed. I initially wanted to add mayo to my sandwich but it wasn't an option. She did offer me a side of mayo but that would have been too much so I passed on it. It was nice of her to offer me another option. I appreciate that you get a good amount of bologna on your sandwich! It was also charred a little, I love char on my food. The bread was fresh and lightly toasted stuff butter. I did find the ketchup and pickles a little overwhelming on the sandwich. I'm just used to just bread, mayo and bologna. I probably won't order it again since I can't modify it to the way of like. My zucchini fries on the other hand was fantastic! I love the seasoning on the breading on the exterior of the zucchini and the zucchini in the middle is perfectly cooked. They are killer! Ugg.. I'm so sorry to do this. Just saw they are no longer offering their prime rib. I never get down to the north end, but my kid wanted a burger after his xcountry meet at camels back. Service was great.... Hair in his fry sauce..... I just can't. It's freaking disgusting. I got the special burger with ham.., ask for no pickles... pickles... which is fine I can deal. But the burger was soooo dry. I'm not a picky person and had the other fry sauce (non hair) all over the top of the bun. Threw the second half (5 bucks) away. I couldn't do it. Super sad. My sister in-law selected this restaurant for lunch on a recent road trip. She saw that it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and wanted to give it a shot. It was pretty good. It's an old fashion drive up restaurant. They do have a walk up counter and a seating area out front. We ordered the rib-eye steak sandwich, bacon cheeseburger, chili fries, and breaded mushrooms. We also tried the in-laws cheese sticks and we all shared the ice cream potato for dessert. The rib-eye steak sandwich was ok. It was a little tough, but hubby liked it. The bacon cheeseburger was so good. The bacon was crispy and the lettuce and tomatoes were really fresh and the burger was juicy. The chili fries were good. The fries were really crispy which held up well with the chili. I didn't try the mushrooms, but hubby and the in-laws seemed to like them. The cheese sticks were huge! I didn't care so much for the coating around them, but they weren't bad. The ice cream potato was the best! It really does look like a baked potato. Unfortunately, I'd already finished my meal and my visit to Westside Drive-In before I learned about the ice cream potato. That would have been something worth experiencing. Next time. What I did have, however, was a burger with tater tots and a milkshake. I can't say that it was the best burger I've had, but it got the job done. If you're looking for a gourmet burger, you might want to keep looking. The milkshake was alright too-my wife didn't care for it, so I got to finish the whole thing myself. (We had planned to share.) Even though I missed the ice cream potato, I did get a surprise. In the bag with our food were two...wait for it..... fortune cookies. I'm not sure if that's common practice or if somebody thought it would be funny to put them in there and see what people would do. Well, we ate them.
