First timer and out of state visitor. I've been to countless BBQ joints across the country and enjoy trying new places on the road. At the insistence of several locals I tried Hoffas today for lunch and wow what a disappointment. I had a feeling the brisket wouldn't be great when I saw my sandwich was chopped meat...usually means it was not sliced fresh and this definitely wasn't!! It was beyond dry and hard in places...probably been sitting out in container. Just terrible. The only reason I'm not giving 1 star is bc the people were nice and that counts for something. Indy if this is the best BBQ you have to offer I feel for ya. I won't be back that's for sure. read more

We arrived early (on accident ) and waited about 20 minutes before they opened. About 5-10 minutes before they opened, people started lining up to get in! Just adding that part to let others know this place is popular and filled up fast. We got in, got in line and ordered our food. Super easy/fast. I ordered the Mac n cheese with brisket. I had read reviews that the brisket was dry but I had high hopes! The Mac n cheese was DELICIOUS!! 10 out of 10! However, sadly...the brisket in fact was dry. Would absolutely order this dish again but would probably order with pulled pork or chicken. The potato salad was yummy, had a bit of cayenne pepper which made it different and kicked it up a notch. This pirate-themed BBQ joint smells amazing before you get in the door - smoked meat heaven. Once inside, the dark interior (think bijou swamp) is slightly brightened with large round colorful paper lanterns hung from the ceiling. The menu is fairly large, so lots & lots of choices. After placing your order, you seat yourself & wait for your number to be called that signals the start of your BBQ journey. Our family enjoyed the smoked brisket, smoked sausage, BBQ ribs & pulled pork. The pickles, cole slaw & rice were good, but the beans were a little too sweet for my palate. Eat here a few times a year. Love, love, love the brisket. The pulled chicken and pork are pretty good too. Avoid the ribs - chewy, can't separate the bones, rub is way too salty. What a gem! Probably not hidden to Westfield residents but for me this was a hidden treasure of a spot. Big Hoffa's is 70% BBQ and 30% ice cream parlor with incredible fancy shakes and single serve ice cream. Hungry after a soccer game the kids and I feasted on some sides of garlic rolls, single serve Mac and cheese and baked beans. One child picked the Hoffanator which was a nice portion of fries topped with Mac and cheese and pulled pork. The lines can get long but they move fast. I was really excited for this place, especially after seeing the pictures and reviews. If you've ever had real Texas BBQ, then you need to stay away from this disappointment. Read the brisket experience. Brisket - Dry and cooked incorrectly. There's so many problems with the brisket, and I'll explain them all. One, they slice the brisket ahead of time. This leads to dry brisket. Two, they claim it takes around 26 hours to make their brisket. That's absurd. We smoke meats at home, and we make a better brisket in way less time. Even with including resting time, you shouldn't be anywhere near 26 hours. Three, their butcher paper sticks to the brisket. Now, the first two issues are just annoying, but the third issue I cannot get past. I kept telling the boyfriend that something tastes really off, and he thought it was the seasoning. The seasoning needs work, but I digress, that was not the weird taste I was confused by. Then he figured out that the paper had stuck to the brisket, and he peeled off the paper. I cannot believe this happened at a restaurant. I'm so upset, and it's been a week still. So every guest eating brisket is also eating butcher paper. I was covering up the bad brisket with bbq sauce, so it took me too long to figure this out. 0/5 stars. Habanero Coleslaw - Tastes pretty good. Habanero is just too spicy for me, but I tried a bite anyways so I could review it. If the basic coleslaw is the same taste as the habanero one, you should get it. 5/5 stars. Macaroni and Cheese - It's overbaked and not very good flavor. It's like school cafeteria food. 1/5 stars. Sausage - This was actually good, when it was hot. Don't let it get cold. 5/5 stars. Ribs - No flavor, and it does not fall off the bone. I've had better ribs at Applebee's and Chili's. I really hope butcher paper wasn't on this one. 0/5 stars. Sweet Tea - Good flavor. I did a 2/3 sweet tea and 1/3 lemonade. Sadly, the lemonade started to hiss and die out from overuse. The tea seems to be made fresh, but the lemonade is just from a soft drink dispenser. This was a very upsetting experience. I can only imagine how much butcher paper is being consumed. Even if you peel off the butcher paper, the flavors and method of cooking are so wrong. Go somewhere else. Replying to the manager: The cook times are listed on a t-shirt you guys sell, unless that's all a lie. You don't have to be perfect, but it wasn't even half decent bbq. read more

I've been wanting to try Big Hoffa's for while since it always comes highly recommended by friends. I went for a carry out order, but I would like to come back and dine in because their pirate themed decor was really fun and the ordering process was casual with walk up service. We wanted to try a little of everything so we ordered the Ribs, Beef Brisket, and Pulled Pork with sides of Potato Salad, Mac n Cheese, and Pickles. When we arrived home we realized the Pulled Pork had accidentally been subbed for The Captain. I was a little bummed, but this was my boyfriends favorite dish. My favorite was the brisket. The ribs were so good and would still recommend ordering them, but they aren't my favorite from the Indy area. The service was great as well. Who doesn't love a randomly themed pirate/swamp BBQ spot? After a nephew's football game, our group was HUNGRY. The menu is huge and took some time to study - thankful for the line to order when we walked in. I opted for the "meat on a plate" brisket with mac n' cheese & cayenne potato salad. You also get two garlic dinner rolls. Essentially you get a lot of food. Our table also opted for the Hoffanator - a version of loaded fries that was very good and just full of stuff. It's been years since we've been here and thought I'd update my review. We haven't been in a while since Westfield was a little too far for us, but we are moving to Westfield and decided to stop by! I believe the place has been renovated since it looked very unfamiliar to me. The space has become wider and more brighter. They have different stalls for online/phone pick up orders, food pick up area, and a stall to place your order. The food was excellent - my friends did tell me that it tastes so much better when you dine in vs carry out. My husband had the brisket and I had the Saigon Special (sandwich). It was delicious! The fries were very good as well and the pickled veggies complimented very well. The only thing I did not like though is... they have a ketchup/bbq station where you grab those paper sauce cups. I saw someone refilling the cups drop a few on the ground and just picked it up and added it to the stack... my preference would've been for it to be tossed. read more

Ordered delivery tonight. 2 bbq chicken sandwiches with 2 sides each and 1 peach cobbler. The sandwiches were large but extremely disappointing. They were very dry and had about 1/2 teaspoon of bbq sauce on them. It tasted like they carved a dry chicken - no seasoning, no bbq flavor and added less than 1/2 teaspoon of sweet baby rays bbq sauce. This is probably my favorite BBQ place! Before this, it was GT South's (RIP-boo). I mean...when you can get quality beef brisket (and tasty too) with a couple sides of your choice and tools at a price that is currently under $13...how can it not be! And there is an added bonus of an ice cream shop that is under the same roof! P.s. this is one place that you can get an insane milkshake....don't know what that is...well, it's a milkshake that has all kinds of crazy toppings. Ok ... enough about the food...the environment and the staff are pretty cool too! When you walk in, you are greeted with paper lanterns and wall paper that is bayou themed....with a sprinkling of wooden carved pirates. When it's your turn to order at the counter, you are greeted with a friendly greeting by someone who is eager to take your order. Like I've said before, I don't like writing reviews on 1 experience but here I go again. Why read my review? I have traveled to Memphis, St. Louis, K.C., Texas and the Carolinas and ate bbq at each location. I also own a vertical smoker and usually smoke my own meat. We got carryout so this is review of the food only. We ordered the Big Hoffa combo meal. A rack of ribs and pound of chicken, in our case, with a side of coleslaw and potato salad. I am very thankful that this restaurant has a separate carryout area. I purposely took a sample of the short end of the rib. If a rib will be overcooked, it will be the ends. The end of the rib was overcooked and dry. The middle ribs were better. They had a decent smoke ring but I didn't taste much rub. The pound of meat we got was chicken. It wasn't pulled at all and had NO smoke flavor. It was just chunks of chicken. It was moist and seasoned well but could have been cooked in a slow cooker. Sides are important to me. The coleslaw was crispy but add seasoning...ground celery seed (or celery salt) plus salt. The potato salad was standard and could have come from any grocery store. The sauce we received was decent. We didn't get a choice of the sauce. I'm not sure if I'll go back. read more

I grew up up in Westfield and since this place first opened it has been a staple and has only gotten better through the years!! I lived in Texas for a while and to me this is the best BBQ I have had in Indiana; the ribs, brisket, pork, mac n cheese, all of it is so delicious! The restaurant is very large inside so you can usually find a table inside or outside, but it does get very busy on the weekends, rightfully so. There is amble parking as well, family friendly, and now has an ice cream shop attached for some dessert! read more

I have been wanting to try Big Hoffa's for months (ok, years). It was close to a basketball tournament and the first time we didn't have to quickly venture to another venue. I couldn't believe how big the building was and the parking lot was PACKED! We walked in and reviewed the menu. Holy overwhelmed. I went with the simple BBQ pork, habanero slaw and baked beans. Others tried the ribs, macaroni and fries. Everything comes out on a tray. The barbeque was AMAZING and the baked beans were full of flavor. The fries looked delicious but nobody could tell me if they were gluten free so I opted out. My dad said the ribs were the best he'd ever had and he dotes himself on being a rib connoisseur. They also have an ice cream shop connected. It's decorated so cute and full of color. They were insanely busy making specialty shakes. Our crew opted for just old fashioned cones. I wish I had my camera on me during our visit. I will certainly be back to try some of their specialty sandwiches and do more research on their fries. read more

This restaurant deserves all of the good publicity that it receives. When you roll up to the joint you will first notice its humongous Pirates Cove mural that covers pretty much every square inch of the building. The restaurant has a huge private parking lot and there is a huge smoker outside on the side of the building by the road. The restaurant does not have table service. You order your food at the counter and then they call your order number when it is ready for you to pick up. After you are finished eating you dump your tray at the trash can and you are out. They have a large dining area and two patio areas, one on each side of the building to eat at. The dining area has a pirate theme (I don't know the connection between that and barbecue), and is dimly lit. There are some neat colorful ball-shaped lights that are all over the ceiling. There are a lot of pictures of them with other Yelper reviews. It is a Instagramers dream. The indoor dining area is very trendy, clean and tidy. They have your basic "Q" that includes ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, and brisket. They have created some unique concoctions with their meat like the Hoffanator, seasoned fries topped with mac & cheese, baked beans, pulled pork, barbecue sauce and ranch dressing. They also serve beer and wine Being that they do not have table service, my interaction with the staff was limited, outside of my placing my order. The limited interaction that I did have though, they were nice and friendly. I ordered the Buccaneer, which had over a half pound of pork, topped with cole slaw, french fries and ranch dressing on a garlic butter bun. I got pork and beans and potato salad. It took me about 10 minutes to get my meal. The sides were ok. I was not a big fan of the baked beans. The potato salad was spicy and tasty, just like I like it. The sandwich was awesome. I highly recommend it. It has a lot of flavor. I will admit that it was a little messy. This is a nice family friendly restaurant that has lots of space and delicious food.
