Visited Backwards BBQ for the first time. It is on Indiana 32 off interstate 65. The atmosphere is that of a casual dark barbecue joint. We ordered the three meat platter. We got pulled pork, sausage, and brisket. It came with two sides. We got the green beans and pasta salad. It was $28.75. Your meal comes with free cheddar garlic biscuits with a side of apple butter. The pulled pork with some of the best we have ever had. The brisket was good as well, flavored nicely. We received three large pieces, however, there was quite a bit of fat on the pieces. We received two sausage links. The sausage was slightly spicy, which we like. However, of the three meats it was our least favorite. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. She recommended the green beans. Her description of them was right on target and they were very good. Service was very fast and our bill was accurate. They are first come, first serve, and do not accept reservations. We would return again. read more

Amazing!!! Staff was attentive and pleasant!! When we sat down we were immediately greeted with warm jalapeño biscuits with apple butter. Started with the delicious pulled pork nachos!!! You could taste the smoke on the meat and it was delicious. Only suggestion is add tomatoes. Next the 2 meat with 2 sides. The brisket was phenomenal, the seasoned fries were on point especially dipped in ranch, the Mac & cheese was piping hot and all the food was amazing!!! One of my fave rib joints in Central Indiana! As someone who has nearly perfected smoked ribs myself, I struggle with ribs at unknown places. Backroads ribs totally pass my 2 tests: - No need for extra or excessive sauce - great as presented - Falls off the bone!!! If I can eat ribs w/o my fingers and only a fork/knife they pass with flying colors. This 1/2 rack was PERFECT. Not a shred of protein left on the bones here and each was removed with fork & knife with ZERO effort. Great coleslaw and green beans as well. Indiana beers on-tap as well. In town for a couple days and this place has good reviews. The kid picked the BBQ spot. I wasn't complaining. Non-descriptive outside but what a fun vibe inside. Greeted warmly, sat promptly. Pulled pork sandwich and catfish sandwich. Omg the filet was huge. So glad I went with the sandwich. It was perfect size. One filet and side as opposed to the entree of 1 or 2 filets with 2 sides. That would have been too much. When we were done and stuffed the waitress offered to-go cups for our drinks. It's a hot evening so that was really appreciated. Circling back to before we ordered, waitress brought fresh hot biscuits with house-made apple butter. It was incredible. I thought it had strawberry in it but nope. After a day of driving around Indiana highways and byways, I needed something to keep me moving, so I stopped in Backroads BBQ in Lebanon, Indiana. First impressions were very good, as it reminded me of some of my favorite BBQ spots over the past several decades. It has a "lived in" feel, and even at around 1:30, it was still fairly busy, which is a good sign. I ordered up their pulled pork sandwich and some fries, which appeared quickly, which I won't ever complain about. The flavor of the meat was nice and smoky, and at the table were two of their BBQ sauces, the Side Street Sweet and the Bourbon Burnout. I sampled both and they were both quite good. Backroads BBQ has just about everything one could want in a local restaurant. Good food, lively atmosphere, and reasonable prices. Will be returning the next time I'm up that way. read more

Had a "Southern Pulled Pork" sandwich for lunch Monday on a road trip. As a native North Carolinian, I am very familiar with pork BBQ. These folks are serving a very decent pork 'Que that is comparable to that found in some of the N.C. joints that have switched over to cooking over electric or gas. The coleslaw on the sandwich was excellent and the crispness of the cabbage is a perfect foil for the richness of the meat. Three sauces were on the table, none of which resembled any that one would find in traditional N.C. BBQ joints, except the far west of the state where a sweet sauce is common. The sauces in the rest of NC are vinegar-based, with the Piedmont ("Lexington") style adding some ketchup to it. The "sweet" sauce was the best of the three, in my opinion. Service was excellent and pricing quite reasonable. I would eat here again. read more

I ordered 3 combo platter. Pulled pork, brisket, and turkey breast. Side slaw and mac and cheese. They have 3 sauces. Mustard, sweet, and bourbon. Bourbon is very different. Turkey was moist and good. Brisket was good but a little fatty. My favorite was the mac and cheese. I would rate it a 3.5 very solid BBQ. Excellent for the area. read more

This is the best barbecue that I've have in Indianapolis! Unbelievably delicious and I'm kicking myself for passing by this place for so long. It is not surprising that they won the County's People's Choice 2023 award for best food. Don't let the appearance of the place fool you. The parking lot is a little muddy. The building is a little unwelcoming and the dining room is a little dark. But the aroma of the barbecue is intoxicating. They have lunch specials and daily drink specials on the menu. There is a full bar. The barbecue is prepared fresh daily. I ordered the Lunch Pulled Chicken sandwich with coleslaw side on the lunch menu. The chicken was moist and tender and so good. The slaw was fantastic...creamy. It was the best slaw I've had in Indiana. There were three barbecue sauces on the table and the Bourbon burnout sauce was incredible with a hint of bourbon and a little heat and not too sweet. Wow! So good. My husband had the Lunch Southern Pulled Pork sandwich with fries. The sandwich was filled so much pork that it was falling out of the sandwich. The tender, flavorful pork was covered with creamy Cole slaw. The fries were excellent, crispy and fresh. Lunches came with complementary biscuits and apple butter. The biscuits were hot and flaky. Very good. The hostess apologized for slow service because they were a little short staffed. We did not notice anything slow. Drinks and food came out quickly. The hostess was sweet and attentive. There is a portion of the dining room for large groups. Kids eat free on Wednesday with adult purchase. They have a nice kids menu. They are located just two blocks off 65 on SR 32. This place is a gem just right off 65 in Lebanon. They start off by giving biscuits with apple butter which was a lovely surprise! They were the perfect way to start the meal. My son and I split the lunch special of Mac and cheese with pulled pork and onion rings on top. It was $10 and was big enough for the two of us to share. We stopped here on our way driving on 65 to Chicago, and it is the perfect, accessible, and efficient stop right off the highway. By far the best item where the dry rub chicken wings to start, and unfortunately, those are not pictured here. The brisket, which came recommended sadly lacked flavor. The ribs were not money well spent. I wouldn't order them again. They seemed like they were steamed almost instead of smoked. A highlight for me was the corn pudding esque side. read more

5/5 this was SO good. I would eat here just for the green beans, they are so good. The brisket melts in your mouth and the portions are HUGE for a great price. Service was quick and friendly. We got our food in less than 10 minutes. The owners were there and they personally spoke with us! Super friendly. They had a live musician playing , Steve Trent, and it was great live music. Restaurant location and atmosphere was fine. It wasn't vbusy but I wanted a spot to get off the road and chill. I have ordered fast food that took longer to get my food than this. I respect fast but this was uncomfortably fast, clearly been sitting for a long time. The pulled pork was ok and the brisket was edible but not good, however the ribs were gross and $8 upgrade fee. They were overcooked and dry yet flavorless. The bbq sauce tasted as burning metalSmells. I heard a lot of good things about this barbecue joint and it did not disappoint. They have a full bar with seating, a decent sized dining area, and a nice patio that runs along the main drag. The menu is packed with your favorite "Q" like ribs, pulled pork, chicken, catfish, and brisket. The staff there is awesome. My server was very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They have a few barbecue sauces in bottles on the tables, along with paper towels (a must). You also get complementary jalapeño biscuits with apple butter served brought to your table before you order. I ordered the rib tips with a sides of fries and baked beans. It took about 10 minutes for me to get my food. It was amazing. The rib tips were tasty and flavorful and the meat fell off of the bone. It was also very tender. The beans and fries were good too. The beans had meat in it and was perfectly seasoned. The bar is a full service bar and they have some savory signature cocktails available. They also have barque sauces and seasoning available for purchase at the front door. I highly recommend checking out this diamond in the rough hidden in Lebanon. Was in town for an appointment and decided to try the place out. Got there right as they opened this morning. I had the pulled pork dinner and got the fries and beans as my sides. Overall the food was great! Portions were very, very generous. I was only able to eat about half the pork and beans and I took the rest home for my lunch. I also sampled their bbq sauces that they have on each table. One was a standard sweet house bbq, a mustardy kind of bbq sauce and a bourbon bbq sauce. Each were good with the pork. I wish I would've bought a bottle on my way out! Service was great too, we were promptly sat and greeted. I noticed that they start getting busy shortly after open so try and get in early. I had passed Backroads BBQ by on the interstate a few times and had even showed up on a Sunday morning that turned out Backroads open an hour later on Sundays. When you arrive, you can hear the country music blaring and when you walk in, the atmosphere has kind of a Roadhouse vibe. I picked the sampler and chose brisket, pulled pork, potato salad, and corn pudding. The brisket was overall good. And I got a big chunk of it. The pork was a little dry for my preference. The potato salad is the baked potato variety, which I love. The corn pudding was like a chopped up piece of cornbread. I was given cheddar biscuits with apple butter when I walked in. These biscuits were legit and packed a lot of flavor. They are listed on the menu so I do not know if they are given all the time or just on special occasions. The sauces were interesting. The first sauce was a very sweet honey BBQ. The 2nd sauce was called Bourbon Burnout. I thought I was almost drunk after the first bite of it. I've had Bourbon-flavored BBQ sauces before, but this was the closest to straight up Bourbon. It went well with the brisket though. Sweet tea was satisfying. The pluses are big portions, the brisket and sides were delicious, and the biscuits. The minuses are the pulled pork was dry and the Bourbon BBQ sauce would be better with less bourbon. read more

Not a bad combination but definitely different. My friend had the Smoked Beef Brisket: topped with fried onion strings and Sweet BBQ sauce on a hoagie bun with a side of salty/seasoned fries.
