The place has a diner feel with a good amount of seating without feeling too crammed. The place was popping which is a good sign that people enjoy the food here. Wife and I decided to treat ourselves to a nice comfort food meal and we're overall pleased with our experience here. We had seen people review this place for years but had just never made it to this cute little spot on the east side! We walked in and were quickly greeted and sat. After being sat our friendly waitress came over and recommended some top picks! After some talking we decided to order the rib meal with potato salad and baked beans. Wife ordered the chicken and red velvet waffles with sides of creamed corn and Mac and cheese. Let's start with our top / best of the meal: 1.Fried Chicken was Amazing!! Amazing breading. 2. Creamed corn was the best side hands down followed with a close second of the Mac and cheese. Now the not so good: 1. The ribs. They were very chewy and gross. I stopped in this place over the weekend just for the peach cobbler. You definitely taste the sugar first, then the peaches. It's more of a comfort dessert than a fresh-fruit-forward one. Overall pleased with our visit to His Place Eatery. When we entered, we were quickly greeted and sat. The place was busy for a Saturday night. Our server, B, was on it throughout the night. She was especially good with our son by making him a balloon glove to keep him occupied. The place felt clean, and more of a hole in the wall vibe (which I don't mind) My wife and I split fried chicken dinner, and a turkey manhattan. The turkey manhattan wasn't anything to write home about. The fried chicken was crispy, and had an excellent amount of seasoning on the skin. We just had the best lunch experience here today. We popped in about 30 minutes after they opened and were created with such lovely smiles. We were seated quickly and were offered drinks right away. My son ordered a sweet tea and it was delicious, with a hint of lemon and just the perfect balance of sweetness. We each ordered combo plates so that we could share as many sides as possible. Everything we tried was delicious. My son opted for the bourbon, corn pudding, and the server offered him a sample, saying that people either loved it or hated it. Best soul food I have had in Indianapolis since V's closed. I have been here probably 4-5 times and they consistently provide a great meal. I have tried the fried pork chops, fried catfish, and fried chicken wings. All of them are perfectly seasoned and breaded. My go-to is the fried catfish. They provide two large filets of catfish with the meal. All portions are worth the price paid. They do not skimp on the portions. The greens and cabbage are always cooked to the right tenderness and the mac & cheese is great. Everyone I introduce to this place ends up loving it. It has a diner/small business feel on the inside. There are some TVs on through the place also. The service is always spot on, starting with the warm greetings walking into the restaurant. The wait staff are attentive and will let you dine at your own speed. The restaurant is usually pretty full when I have been around lunch, so you may want to try and get there on an off-hour. However, I have only had to wait once at this location, and it was not for long. Highly recommend this place and I cannot wait to keep trying new menu items. read more

This is my complaint about the Bay Area. We don't have any legit soul food places, the one we did have closed down around the pandemic time which I am still sad about, my friends who are locals here have told me that this was the place to try the best soul food they had in the city. soul food is something that I probably have once every three to five years just because it can get heavy. But who can say no to some good fried chicken, Mac and cheese and mash potatoes. Nothing else on earth like it. The servers were very nice and warm and was pretty good at getting the food out pretty fast. Some work friends and I stopped in here last week to take someone we used to work with (previous resident) to lunch who lives on this side of town now. When I saw that His Place Eatery was only a 5-minute drive away I knew it was a no-brainer that we'd come here for lunch. I've been to the location over in Nora before and knew the food was delicious. Our server was so kind and patient (our previous resident can be a handful sometimes). We all got our food orders in and she always made sure our drinks never emptied, that we had plenty of napkins, bbq sauce, and hot sauce. The food was just as good as I remembered it to be! My work friends and I ordered a dessert to-go, but our resident buddy ordered peach cobbler with ice cream to eat before leaving. It looked amazing. Ordered carryout from His Place Eatery at the Westside location, off 86th Street. It was busy in there. Nice decor, and has a mural on the wall upon entry to the right. All staff was friendly and double checked my order before exiting out of the restaurant. The one thing that I wish was better was the to-go packaging of the food in bags. The plastic bags used were thin and easily broke with the weight of the to-go containers/food in each bag. Thank goodness for quick reflexes to carry the bags from the bottom since a hole was getting bigger and spreading to break before I could even make it to my destination. The food was delicious per usual, but the bottom of the cornbread was a little soggy due to being in the container with the cajun grilled catfish. I will definitely get take out again, but hopefully the packaging of carryout orders will improve to prevent bags breaking again. read more

His Place Eatery has two locations, and after recently visiting the one on the north side, I think it might be my favorite--though I'm still deciding! What I can confidently say is that the brisket is an absolute 10/10 at both spots. I also love that the owner takes the time to walk around and check on customers, adding a personal touch to the experience. That said, I've had a few hiccups at both locations. If the food isn't up to par, it's better not to serve it. My mom ordered dessert, but it was burnt, and when they brought out a second serving, it was the same. We were the last ones there, so we understood they were probably winding down for the night, but they should have just said they were out. The sweet potatoes also tasted like we got the last of the batch. Despite those issues, the service and most of the food are too good to keep us away. We'll definitely be back! read more

My wife and I met another couple at His Place, 30th St. location, for a late lunch. First, the restaurant is bright and cheery. The hostess/server greeted us as if we were genuinely the best thing that had happened to her. She was like encountering a long-lost friend. I'm not a soul food enthusiast, but everyone else is. I had the Beef Brisket, with fries, and slaw. The fries were really good, slightly crispy, and lightly, uniquely seasoned. My wife had the Cajun Chicken, with two orders of Collard Greens, wishing she had a third helping, probably with Okra, knowing her. Everyone enjoyed their meals, which were very tasty and seasoned with unique flavors and scents. I wish I were better at describing the meal, but for a 73-year-old's first visit to this type of restaurant, trust me, it is great. This was actually my second visit, the first being the last day of my HS Senior year in June 1970, when it was a popular breakfast chain restaurant, an icon of the time. The restaurant itself gives cozy diner vibes, and the service was great. I went for the chicken pot pie (deconstructed) and peach pie. While the food was on the pricier side, I can absolutely see why. It was incredible. The seasoning of the veggies, gravy, and chicken was incredible.
