I stopped in this place over the weekend just for the peach cobbler. You definitely taste the sugar first, then the peaches. It's more of a comfort dessert than a fresh-fruit-forward one. The peaches were slices cooked down and soft, not firm or crunchy. When it comes to good cobbler, the crust is the real star! The crust was somewhere between soft and doughy. I just wished I could have more of it as is tends to soak up the syrupy flavor. This was good but not something to eat regularly......

Overall pleased with our visit to His Place Eatery. When we entered, we were quickly greeted and sat. The place was busy for a Saturday night. Our server, B, was on it throughout the night. She was especially good with our son by making him a balloon glove to keep him occupied. The place felt clean, and more of a hole in the wall vibe (which I don't mind) My wife and I split fried chicken dinner, and a turkey manhattan. The turkey manhattan wasn't anything to write home about. The fried chicken was crispy, and had an excellent amount of seasoning on the skin. The mashed potatoes were homemade, and didn't taste like they came out of a box. The dressing was moist, but wasn't anything I was super excited about. Overall, would return, but would skip getting the turkey manhattan.

Landed in Indianapolis, found this restaurant on Tiktok and decided to stop by before heading to Purdue for an event and I will be back. The atmosphere gave very homey vibes. The service was so good - nice, attentive and recommended some great items. First, the Uptown - which is their twist on an Arnold Palmer - 10/10. Loved it so much I had to get one to go. I then had the meat loaf with collard greens, Mac & cheese and cornbread with strawberry butter. The meat loaf was so good and I haven't had meat loaf in years. The collard greens??? If you don't get them, just cancel the whole meal because they were so so good. I was not a fan of the Mac & cheese but the cornbread was really good especially after adding the strawberry butter. I also had the banana pudding to go and it was freshly made. I would definitely be back and would surely recommend His Place Eatery!

We just had the best lunch experience here today. We popped in about 30 minutes after they opened and were created with such lovely smiles. We were seated quickly and were offered drinks right away. My son ordered a sweet tea and it was delicious, with a hint of lemon and just the perfect balance of sweetness. We each ordered combo plates so that we could share as many sides as possible. Everything we tried was delicious. My son opted for the bourbon, corn pudding, and the server offered him a sample, saying that people either loved it or hated it. I really appreciated that she gave him the opportunity to try it before ordering. He loved it. Overall great experience.

Let me just echo all the 5 star reviews! This place was delicious! I got the chicken (tenders) and waffles with sweet potatoes and cabbage and the cabbage tasted just like the kind my southern grandmother used to make. My boyfriend got the Cajun grilled fish, baked beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread. We highly recommend everything we ate and the peach butter!

His Place Eatery in Indianapolis is a place that defines soul food better than any this food fanatic has ever been to. It is the epitome of comfort food. A bit of southern cooking in the Midwest. I had the collard green grilled cheese, which sounds comforting... And then somehow turns into a full on flavor-event. My wife went with the pick two and got the grilled chop and catfish. Both were savory, seasoned just right, and the catfish was clearly made by someone who knows how to cook it. My daughter, crushed the chicken and waffles (as one should), and my mother tried the churro chicken and waffles, which was nothing short of magical. Sweet, savory crunchy... Honestly, it deserves its own fan club. Now let's talk about the sides, because these were not just afterthoughts. Cinnamon sugar sweet potatoes, collard greens, bourbon, creamed corn, and green beans. Every single one was incredible. No weak links. No "just okay" in this menu. Just pure soulful excellence across the board. The cherry on top? Chef James Jones himself, came out to talk with us. He was warm, personable and genuinely kind. The kind of chef who makes you feel like you're eating in his home not just his restaurant. You can taste the care in the food and meeting him just sealed the deal. Come hungry, leave happy and immediately start planning your next visit. His Place Eatery is something special.

Best soul food I have had in Indianapolis since V's closed. I have been here probably 4-5 times and they consistently provide a great meal. I have tried the fried pork chops, fried catfish, and fried chicken wings. All of them are perfectly seasoned and breaded. My go-to is the fried catfish. They provide two large filets of catfish with the meal. All portions are worth the price paid. They do not skimp on the portions. The greens and cabbage are always cooked to the right tenderness and the mac & cheese is great. Everyone I introduce to this place ends up loving it. It has a diner/small business feel on the inside. There are some TVs on through the place also. The service is always spot on, starting with the warm greetings walking into the restaurant. The wait staff are attentive and will let you dine at your own speed. The restaurant is usually pretty full when I have been around lunch, so you may want to try and get there on an off-hour. However, I have only had to wait once at this location, and it was not for long. Highly recommend this place and I cannot wait to keep trying new menu items.

Another return visit and another fabulous experience. Can't say enough about the great food and great staff here. My wife and daughter can't seem to stay away from the smokehouse grilled cheese. It's that good! I went for the southern fried chicken this trip, it did not disappoint! The green beans are off the hook! And don't pass on the peach cobbler!

Everything was soooo delicious!! The fried chicken...omg...the best! Collard greens to die for. Everything is made from scratch. I've eaten here before, but it's been awhile- already looking forward to my next visit!

Let me tell you. Hands down to whoever the chef is. Everything was delicious. The ambiance was friendly and great music played. This food was so good I came back again in the same day. To have a review like this from me you have to be good. I'm staying here for 3 months from Atlanta and this will be my spot until I leave. This is a must try place

This is my complaint about the Bay Area. We don't have any legit soul food places, the one we did have closed down around the pandemic time which I am still sad about, my friends who are locals here have told me that this was the place to try the best soul food they had in the city. soul food is something that I probably have once every three to five years just because it can get heavy. But who can say no to some good fried chicken, Mac and cheese and mash potatoes. Nothing else on earth like it. The servers were very nice and warm and was pretty good at getting the food out pretty fast. Chicken was well seasoned and crispy Mac and cheese was well balanced and the mash potatoes with the gravy was creamy and had the right balance of saltiness. The other things on their menu looked so good if I ever come here again next time I want to try everything !

We were greeted when we arrived and taken to our seats. Hubby had the chicken wings with red velvet waffle, Mac and cheese, and green beans. Everything was delicious! Daughters got the chicken. Sweet potatoes and mac and cheese. So good! And I had the perch and fries. I didn't even get to the fries because that perch was fried to perfection. The restaurant and bathroom were clean also. If you have not tried it, you are missing out.

When will the 86th and Ditch location be opening?

We’re in the final stages of our build out. Hopefully, by the end of June or early July. Thanks

    Do they have instagram?

Yes, unfortunately our Instagram /Facebook accounts were hacked and we’re working on getting the accounts recovered.

Are the ribs pork or beef?

    The ribs are pork. Thanks

Has anyone had this catered? Thinking of having this place cater a wedding but wanted input!

If people are saying this place has better chicken than Maxine's, I have to try it!!! Do you think their chicken is better than Maxine's & how are the ribs?

Amy, we are flattered by the thought of having the best chicken in Indy, I must say that Maxine's chicken is wonderful. We think it's great that there are multiple local restaurants in town that serve really good chicken... No good, better or best… Read more

That is why it pains me to be giving this 3-star review. It's not that anything was bad, but after all the hype, we just weren't impressed. Let me start off by saying that the space is very cool. I loved the dark, swamp-themed mural painted on the wall, the banging playlist and the inclusion of a bar in the back as well as the ice cream counter. The staff were jovial, accommodating and extremely pleasant to interact with. My husband and I both ordered 1/2 slab rib combos. My 1/2 was much larger/meatier than his, so we swapped. The combo comes with two sides. We both ordered the baked beans, he had the coleslaw, and I had the macaroni and cheese. Categorically, everything was ok...good even, but not great or amazing, which were the words that we'd heard from others. Perhaps we didn't order the right items. The ribs were beautiful with the perfect smoke ring. They were seasoned well, but they were not as tender as I would've liked. I like my ribs to be fall-off-the-bone tender, but I know that isn't necessarily the industry standard. The sauce options were mild and hot, but I could barely distinguish the difference between the two. Hot is not spicy. The macaroni and cheese could've used some salt and pepper, but the baked beans were spot-on. The beans were on the sweet side, which is just how I like them. The platter is also served with soft, buttery, rolls with garlic.

You can order the meat only or get a dinner that includes 2 sides and your choice of bread (white, wheat, or cornbread). They provide very generous portion sizes. The rib tips are the best that I have had in Indy thus far. They are tender and the seasoning they use is delicious. You could eat them without any sauce. However, the sauce is what takes it over the top for me. They offer sweet, medium, hot, or they will mix the sauces for you. The hot has a pretty good kick as a warning if you are sensitive to spice. I recently tried the Bar B Q bun, which is essentially a pulled pork sandwich. The pork is finely shredded and the sauce is poured on top of the pork. It's almost a fork and knife sandwich, as the bottom bun gets soaked in the sauce. Their sides have definitely reduced in quality over the years. I recently tried the mac and cheese and greens. As a note, they only have greens Friday - Sunday and they often times run out on Sunday if you do not get there early. The mac and cheese was dry and had little flavor. The greens, which used to be my favorite in the city, reminded me of cooked spinach and weren't seasoned. The service remains great. With the amount of people waiting while I was there, they were friendly and efficient. I wanted to order chess pie and there were not any readily available behind the counter.
