I hate writing this because about a year ago Trax BBQ had some of the best brisket around. Back then the brisket was moist, flavorful, and you could actually request fatty or lean cuts. The fatty brisket especially was incredible. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor, and honestly didn't even need sauce. This recent visit felt like a completely different restaurant. Apparently you can't request fatty or lean anymore, and the brisket I received was so dry it literally crumbled apart like beef sawdust. There was basically zero fat left on it, which also meant very little flavor. For the first time ever, the sauce wasn't optional... it was rescue equipment. The ribs were okay, but even they weren't what they used to be. They used to have that perfect fall-off-the-bone texture, and now they were just kind of there. Not terrible, just disappointing compared to how good this place once was. I'm not trying to trash Trax because I know how great they can be. That's actually what makes this frustrating. Recently, it was a beautiful day for a picnic, but I wasn't in the mood for sub sandwiches or normal picnic fare. What's a simple and easy option that can also feed your entire family? BBQ, brother! You can order individual plates, but with BBQ, I always love ordering a pound or two of pulled pork or brisket. Trax has some great family options on the menu, all ready to easily order. It makes family time a snap! My kids were so excited we were going to eat barbecue in the park! Our family order was packaged well, complete with plates and plastic ware, pulled pork, sides, buns, and all the sauces. (Call me crazy, but I'll pick pulled pork over brisket any day. I love brisket. Don't get it twisted. But you can't go wrong with smoked or slow roasted pork!) Heads up: the Family Meal is listed under the Combos section at the bottom. So, scroll last the larger tray options and you'll find it listed. Speaking of sauces, Trax bottles their own sauce. So, if you enjoy the flavor or heat level, you can grab a bottle to stash at home. They have several options for sauces from sweet to spicy and even a Carolina yellow in both sweet and medium. My only drawback was that a few of the sides had a distinct flavor. It wasn't bad, and you may love it, so try it once. But we didn't really care for the slaw and beans. I chose the pick two meats and that came with my choice of two sides. The portions are generous and I easily made 2 meals out of it. The pulled pork was well smoked and tender. The pulled chicken was a little dry but had a good flavor. I thought the Mac-n-cheese was very good. Not fancy, but as you'd hope. The green beans had a strange flavor and we couldn't stomach them. I couldn't place the flavor! The sauces were very strongly vinegar and I didn't care for any of them. For the beans and the sauces, I am giving only 4 stars. A couple of friends hyped this place up as the best barbecue in Indy--and they weren't wrong. We arrived around 6 PM on a Saturday and, despite the line stretching to the back of the restaurant, we stuck it out and left with carryout about an hour and a half later. The menu had a wide variety of options to satisfy any craving. We went with the pulled porker nachos and a 1/4 sheet pan--supposedly for 1-2 people--which came loaded with three meats, two sides, pickles, slaw, and toast. It was an absolutely massive amount of food. The pulled pork was hands down the best I've ever had. We sampled what the cashier called their "big three": pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. Each one had its own unique, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. We also appreciated that the nachos came deconstructed, making them perfect for assembling fresh at home. OMG, we wandered in here for a random Saturday lunch and had no idea we were about to be taken on a ride in the best way. Kelly was so helpful explaining how everything worked and offering recommendations. Everything was good, but the OMG items for us were ribs, pulled pork, wings and that banana bread pudding. All of the sides and extras were items we would all eat again. The Korean pork tacos have a kick, so be prepared. My husband and son loved the amount of heat, though. Visited Trax BBQ in McCordsville for the first time. It is off highway 36, right by the railroad tracks. It is located in a warehouse style building. We ordered the quarter sheet pan. It included three meats, two sides, coleslaw, pickles, and Texas toast for $35. We got the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. For the sides, we got green beans and cheesy potatoes. The green beans were nicely flavored. The cheesy potatoes were extremely good. It is a customer favorite here. The coleslaw was more sour cream based rather than mayonnaise based. It reminded us of KFC coleslaw. We really liked it. The brisket and the pulled pork were also very good. The ribs were a bit dry, but tasty nonetheless. They have a variety of sauces. We liked the sweet hog. It reminded us of the original sauce at City BBQ. We visit City BBQ frequently. The prices at Trax BBQ are comparable to those at City BBQ. A difference is City BBQ has an app for your phone and is always offering discounts and rewards. We feel the sides at Trax were a little better quality and larger portion than City BBQ. The meat was very comparable. Overall, the 1/4 sheet pan would feed three individuals although the menu says it feeds one to two. The portion size was very ample. Trax is a city favorite around McCordsville. It is a restaurant where you order at a counter, have a seat at a table and then they call your order for pick up. When we arrived around 4:30 PM on a Friday we were only the second table eating. By the time we left the place was full. They even have two lines for people to stand to wait to order. If we are in the area, we will definitely eat here again. However, we would not pass by City BBQ and drive a long way just to eat here. She was patient while I called home to confirm a side choice, and even noticed I was not able to carry the food out on my own, and offered to carry it to my car in the snow and muck. The hype about the meat itself was real! The pork was seasoned so well it didn't even need sauce, but the sauces were an added bonus. However, the sides were a little more hit or miss for me. I've heard so many amazing and rave reviews of this place. It had been on our radar for a while. We went on a Saturday night at 8pm. They were pretty busy. Staff at the counter tell us it's a 40 minute wait, they're out of ribs, baked beans and their soda machine is broken. We should have left and came back a different night. Their sides are good & give that home cooked feeling, but like most places some days are better than others. But don't let that stop you from their Mac n cheese which hasn't missed yet! We have visited this restaurant probably 8-10 times in the past year. We enjoy Scarlet Brewing attached and all Trax entree's we have selected. The atmosphere is often crowded upping the volume, but as a casual gathering place it lends well to a great dining experience by all ages. The decor & building can best be described as rustic. (LOL). No need to dressing get in the car and go for this location, order at the counter, grab some napkins and have a seat. We have brought friends to Trax (from in-town Indianapolis or some distance out-of-town visitors) and many have commented it's the best BBQ they've had in Indiana. One thing to improve is the volume of available entrees offered. A sign indicates when an entree has been depleted, and although there is disappointment in missing out you know food is freshly prepared and you're not getting warmed-up yesterday's options. So, all in all, it's a win that prevents disappointment and a hurried second choice once you reach the counter to order. There are board games to (stay a while or keep kids occupied) while adults enjoy beverages (brilliant), and some outdoor areas to enjoy beverages behind the brewery as well. I don't know if you can take food out there, assuming so we just never have since we would need to walk thru the brewery with a teen who is under 21 we have always just enjoyed the loud spacious dining area inside. I'd say go to Trax ASAP, but I would hate for you to be the person in front of me grabbing my long-awaited entree before it populates the "depleted" list. read more

They have the very best sides compared to any restaurant, love the broccoli salad, baked beans and cheesy potatoes. If they have funeral potatoes when you go, order them! I can make a meal out of those alone. I got half a rack of ribs, my usual, and for the first time ever, I was disappointed. They were tough and short on meat. Not the usual succulent ribs. I was sold the second I found out that you can choose your brisket as lean, fatty or mixed. I prefer the lean variety, but that is often hard to find. So I was quite excited. And rightfully so, because it was absolutely to die for. You also get to choose between 6 different BBQ sauces, and there are also hot sauces available. I opted for the potato salad for one of my sides and it was delightful. For my second side I opted for the side of the month, which was a Tomato cucumber salad. It sounded good, but wasn't compared to the rest of my food. I'm kind of glad I don't live closer or I would be in here all the time. I really do want to check out some of the other meats here. This place opens at noon and there was already a line inside at 11:40. While waiting in that line all I could think is wow, this must be some good food. The restaurant has a decent amount of parking available out front, but it goes quickly. It is right off of the train tracks and is co-located with Scarlet Lane Brewing Company in the back. There is a large dining area with tables and booths. You will find a self serve drink station and barbecue sauce station here. It was very clean, but i was there when they opened. They also have a small patio area out front with some picnic tables. You will see the joint's huge smoker out front, opposite the patio. They restaurant has monthly specials of a food item, which this month was the Blackened FU Burger, and a monthly side, which was collards greens dueing my visit. They have your regular barbecue favorites that include ribs, chicken wings, pulled pork, brisket, sausage and pulled chicken. Additionally, the have some signature sandwiches and serve meat by the pound. For those adventurous people, this is home to the Half Sheet Challenge, where you have to eat a sheet platter which consists of 4 meats, 3 sides, some slaw, a pickle, and Texas toast. If you do not succeeded, you will still make their Wall of Shame and have to pay $60 for the meal. The woman working the register was very friendly and helpful, the rest of the staff just did their job. They were not rude and not friendly or engaging either. I ordered the Trax PBLT with a side of baked beans. It took about 8 minutes for me to get my food. It was fresh, hot, delicious, and packed with meat. I topped it with some Jamaican jerk sauce and mmmmmmm. I wanted some ribs, but they were not ready, which broke my heart. I was told that they were still on the smoker and they did not have an ETA for when they would be ready. Note to self, come later in the day if you want some ribs. Anyway, this restaurant has some delicious food. I had a tough time deciding and limiting myself to just one meal (I was helped out by them not having ribs ready while I was there). If locals go there and know about it it's probably good. It is! The chief is a REV Indy chef that will be at the IMS in May for REV. I can see why. The food looked so good that everyone had. Ribs, brisket, sausage, pulled chicken and pulled pork are the meats they have. They had a shrimp po boy as a special this month also. For sides they had hush puppies, a sweet corn succotash for the special this month, mac and cheese, and other delicious sides. I ordered the green beans and the cheesy potatoes. I wish I had the recipe for the cheesy potatoes those were delicious!! The broccoli salad sounded good along with the hush puppies. I saw a lot of people eating the baked beans they had and will have to try those. The pulled chicken and pulled pork were smoked and had a great flavor to them. They weren't dry at all. You didn't even need sauce they were seasoned that well!!! I chose the Carolina vinegar and the mustard sauce. Loved them both! They even have a Jamaican jerk sauce. I will say the Texas toast they make is some of the best I've ever had. The seasonings they used made it perfect!!!
