I've long heard good things about Gomez BBQ and I noticed that they'd been showing up recently to downtown Indy's Statehouse Market. Today, I finally decided to dive in. The set-up at Statehouse Market has been pretty simple. They don't use a truck. They set-up under a canopy with their BBQ goods - Pork, Chicken, Brisket, and possibly one other option. They also have a "bowl" option available. The only beverage option I saw was a bottled water. The sandwiches come on a white bun. They include cilantro and pickled red onion, though they did ask if toppings were wanted. I was a little confused as I was charged $12 for the chicken sandwich - the menu indicated $10. I did get the correct sandwich. The sandwich itself was quite tasty - I don't usually order the toppings, however, I decided to order it how it's usually served and I did enjoy it. There were two employees working - one making the food (I'll assume Gomez?) and a young man taking orders (who seemed a bit distracted, however, he was friendly). Because the canopy was off the step, the food was handed to me. Napkins probably should have been included as this was a messy sandwich. However, I enjoyed the meal and would definitely order it again. I've not been to their shop, however, this visit could sure inspire me to stop by there as I do live fairly close to it. Overall, I'm not quite willing to go 5-stars. However, this was a solid 4-star experience for me and I would definitely order again when they return to Statehouse Market. read more

BBQ is not something I normally pick but when I learned they have a biscuit and biscuit gravy I knew we had to try it. My husband got the breakfast quesadilla with bacon at the owners suggestion. It comes with a spicy chipotle sauce. We each thought our dishes were great! It was only the owner working. It was our first time so I'm not sure if that is the norm. I actually like the new location even so it's not in the best part of town. This is such a quaint little place you will feel at home immediately. The BBQ is as good as ever, maybe even better. I recommend checking out the daily specials. This way I lucked in to a grilled cheese with pulled pork on it with a side of tomato soup... OMG, so good. Espcially the grilled cheese. Cheesy buttery pulled pork on crisp bread. Heavenly. Of course the 'regular' menu is delicious as well. This is one of those great restaurants where you just cannot go wrong because it is all yummy. Giudbess, what a lovely treasure and addition to the near Eastside neighborhood (and conveniently less than ten minutes from home). I was so excited to hear of Gomez BBQ expanding beyond their City Market location and better yet, brightening up a spot on the near Eastside. The space boasts a charming black historic tin ceiling, floor to ceiling windows, cozy vibes and a mural along the side of the building. Rumor has it there are plans of adding a side patio for expanded outdoor seating. One of the things I love most about this location is that they offer a breakfast menu and variety of coffee drinks using Bee Coffee Roasters beans. I ended up ordering an oat milk based cinnamon beverage and it was delightful. I also ordered a pulled pork sandwich and smoked tofu for the road. The pork was amazing---and I'm all about the pickle combo to balance the flavors. I also appreciate that Mike supports other local businesses like Broad Ripple Chips and Four Birds Bakery. I was able to buy the tofu vacuum sealed to take home and prepare with other ingredients. Promise you won't regret a breakfast/lunch or dinner at Gomez BBQ. Cherry on top? I learned of this location days after a failed attempt to get my bbq fix at their former City Market spot. How lucky for me! The menu isn't huge but has a few standards and daily specials. I planned on getting something "small" but heard myself order the bbq bowl subbing in brisket for the chicken or pork. And a beer. Because...barbecue! I was happy with my food, it had a good amount of meat and the crunchy pickles on top were a nice touch. There are some parking spots next to the building and in back. The place is small so if you have a big group get there before the usual rush times to get one of the bigger tables. read more

This was a great place! One man operation the Saturday night we went there. Didn't have to wait long to get our food and the man that greeted us was kind and took the time to fill us in on all the deets. Small place. 4 tables, 18 table seats. A dozen or so bar seats. A small fenced in patio to the right of the restaurant with 3 or so wooden picnic tables, but nicely shaded by the two story building next door. Fun upbeat jazzy music, not too loud, just perfect. It was warm inside...but it was warm outside, and the wall facing 10th street is all windows, so that's to be expected. Lots of good beers on draft. Craft soda, which I'm usually not a fan of but the MexiCola was yummy. The chips weren't plentiful, but the meat portion was satisfying and filled my tummy. Prices were really fair. They offer cookies from 4 Birds Bakery and that's always a fav of mine. It was a good place. The only thing for ME though, when it comes to BBQ, because there seems to be one on every corner, it has to have some OUTSTANDING feature in order for it to stand out amongst the rest. And this really didn't have that. If I lived in Woodruff Place, I could see walking here a couple times a month, or ordering carry out and bringing some home. But since it's a little bit more of a drive, I don't see us stopping by again real soon. There isn't anything *special* that I would crave and NEED to go. The smoked wings with sambal sauce are amazing! I know this is a bbq place but the wings caught our eye and I'm so glad we tried them. You get 6-7 wings for $8.00. The smoky flavor of the wings is prominent and long-lasting, but not overbearing. The sambal sauce is a spicy, sriracha sauce that slightly reminded me of buffalo sauce. The spicy, tangy, vinegary sauce combined with the smokiness created a really unique and addicting flavor profile. FYI the sambal sauce is quite spicy so I would ask for sauce on the side if you want to control the spice level. The guys at the counter were also friendly and a pleasure to chat with. Best BBQ I've ever had!!! Everything was delicious - I can't explain how good the quesadilla was - it was the perfect mix of cheese, meat & eggs. And the sauce to dip it in was SOO good. Great foods to order via Market Wagon. Their brisket and other bbq meats are tender and very flavorful.

First time visiting Gomez and only my second time in City Market - definitely recommend going early for the widest selection, as they'll sell out of things and not be able to replenish it. (Not a bad business model by any means, just something to know ahead of time!) Since I was short on time I just got the pulled pork with a side of baked beans and mac and cheese. The pork was DELICIOUS and the sauce was a perfect mix of savory with just a tiny bit of heat. Not sure I'd go with the same sides next time - not bad, but definitely interested in trying something different next time for sure. I CAN'T believe I haven't reviewed Gomez yet. I've probably eaten here a hundred times (ok maybe not quite that many) and have never not been completely satisfied. Indy isn't really known for any special type of BBQ like a lot of southern cities... but if we did have a specialty it would sure as heck be Gomez. My personal favorites include the avocado toast, chili dog, meatloaf, mac and cheese, and let's be honest just everything. The Whole Hogsett holds a special place in my heart -- it's a cleverly named homage to Indy's mayor, a sandwich piled high with pulled pork, ham, and bacon jam. It comes around every once and a while. On that note, I recommend following Mike's Instagram to stay up to date on all the specials! Speaking of Mike, he's so friendly and so passionate about what he does. Indy is lucky to have him. Pro-tip: Gomez has a dinner menu up at Tomlinson Taproom on the second floor of the City Market. During Covid we have been getting our Gomez barbecue fix via market wagon delivery. In our first order we added their snack mix which is like a Chex mix with an amazing smokey spiced sweet barbecue rub seasoning. I tried it at a Yelp event and was floored to learn they sell it by the container! In our second Market Wagon order we added a Tinker Coffee rub smoked pork to our cart. The flavor was incredible, but I wish it came with reheating instructions because I think I botched that part, as it came out a little bit dry. In our most recent Market Wagon order we added a Cottage Pie. It was the ideal size for our family of 4 and tasted better than homemade. For $20, we'll be ordering again. It is so dense it is a complete dinner! It has felt good to support local businesses and vendors that are missing their regular foot traffic. After being introduced to this business through a Yelp event, I had to return. I tried the Tasso ham and cheese, the hand crafter "special rub" potato chips and the root beer float. The Tasso sandwich is to die for! It has smoked ham, mustard, cheese and delicious homemade pickles. It comes with a few plain Amazing Potato Chips and small cup of cole slaw. The cole slaw needs improvement. It was very plain and dry and I threw it away after a couple bites. Gomez BBQ special chips is the owner's special concoction of spices on the Amazing Potato Chips. It has a smoky flavor with lots of paprika. They are really good and pair well with any of the meals. The root beer float is a special item. It comes with smoked ice cream. I do not like root beer, so I ordered mine with ginger beer instead. All of the sodas at Gomez's are handcrafted. The smoked ice cream paired well with the smoked meat sandwich, but it was not so good by itself. Trying to drink/eat it after I was finished with my meal did not taste as good. I met Gomez while he was working at Tomlinson Tap Room, and was lucky enough to get to hear about his plans to start something up at City Market once the space became available. If you haven't met Gomez before, he's a great guy, an extremely hard worker, and someone who strives to put a great product out. You might not know Gomez, but you may have had some of his food before. Last year his products were in some of the boutique shops in Indy, like Wildwood Market. It's tasty stuff! I arrived at City Market one evening recently and caught up with Gomez. He didn't have much left on the menu for the day, but I was anxious to try something and always love good BBQ. I went with the smoked sausage and had him throw some bbq baked beans on it (you know, for good measure). My dinner was HUGE and delicious. In fact, I could only eat half. Fortunately, I was with friends and the other half didn't go to waste. The four of us that split the sandwich all walked away with smiles on our faces. This restaurant is located in City Market, which has many great restaurants to choose from. This place is among the best of them. I got the chicken and waffle wrap. MMMMMM. They took the chicken and waffle and made it better, if that was possible. I also got a side of potato side which was equally tasty. My only complaint is that I wish the sides were bigger. I will have to try his barbecue next time. I have heard noting but good things. The food is prepared quick and the prices are reasonable. This stand inside City Market is great. I had tried his 'que before and remembered it was quite good. Now I can have it anytime. I had the duck pastrami (which combines 2 of my favorite foods) and it was just as delicious as it sounds! We are barbecue aficionados and in general Indy has been a pretty big disappointment for us for consistent, good smoked meat, sides and great sauce even from some of the classic places here. To be fair, we are amateur barbecuers and foodies ourselves, and we have friends in the business in Perkinsville, Indiana and Florida, Tennessee and Kansas City so we are super picky. Mike Gomez has created a real jewel down here by 10th and Rural. It seems like his Venezuelan roots have given him a special ability to prepare meats that adds character and some nice complexity to his barbecue. The restaurant is cool, with a fun atmosphere, great beer, coffee and other drinks and a good spectrum of accompaniments. From his beginnings choices we had his Pork Belly Nugs which he prepares so they are somewhat crunchy, served with a creamy picante sauce. They are off the hook. Crystal, my wife who loves smoked chicken got the chicken plate which she said was the best she has had, and that is saying somethin'. I had the ribs which are available for the weekend, and they were meaty, smoky and rich-the kind you don't want to put any sauce on. However, Mike's sauce rocks. We were stuffed, but got brisket to go which was superb with a nice layer of marble with an outer layer of crunchy brown perfection which blended well with the tender moist bark on the bottom. Finally, his greens and barbecue beans were excellent, demonstrating that he can deliver the whole culinary package to the benefit of his customers. We plan to come back for brunch which looks rockin' good, and have already been back for some morning coffee and latte which were excellent. If you love great barbecue in a nice, cool environment managed by friendly and talented people, don't miss it. Parking is handy, and is surrounded by nice construction and businesses. Don't let the general locale cause concern if you are coming from the lands of milk and honey in the burbs. BTW-Mayor Hogsett and others who should be paying attention, will you please get this fantastic business up and running with outdoor seating for the benefit of your hungry and thirsty citizens?? read more

When I stopped by for lunch, I thought I would try something new. So, when I saw they offered a BB-Cuban sandwich, that became my choice. The sandwiches are made to order and within a few minutes, it was ready to go. The BB-Cuban features pulled pork, sliced ham, bbq sauce, pickles, Swiss cheese, whole grain mustard and comes served on a Circle City Sweets bun. They also offer coleslaw either on the side or on top. Note that the coleslaw isn't the sweet kind; it's more tart/acidic, so my advice is to put it on top of the sandwich to blend the flavors. Or, you can use one of the plastic forks to put a bit on each bite since this sandwich is THICK! I had a hard time fitting the thing in my mouth and usually don't have problems. So, you get your money's worth here! They also add some house chips on the side. You can get your order to go or for dining in the upstairs seating of City Market. They also have some sides and beverages available here, so you don't have to go to one of the other market vendors to fill out your meal. My only negative was that there is a lot of grease that comes off the BBQ. My paper bowl was pretty coated on the bottom by the time I finished and I recommend grabbing one of the packaged hand wipes at the counter before dining so that you can clean your fingers. (Not a major problem, just kind of messy.) The flavor was good, but if you want, you can add more flavor options from the bottled sauces on the counter too. Overall, a hearty lunch with good flavor. As soon as I saw the pictures of the food here, I know I had to try it. Don't be deterred by the reviews saying this is expensive or poor customer service, my experience was quite the opposite. I came in on a Saturday morning with a friend and saw that Gomez BBQ has an amazing sounding breakfast sandwich with egg, swiss, bacon, and all piled high on a croissant for $9. I will admit, I thought twice about the price, but this sandwich is HUGE! No kidding, I have a big mouth ( ha ha) but I had to break out the fork and knife to dig through this monster. The service was polite; the man working offered to cook my eggs any style and quickly got to work. This delight of a sandwich was in my hands within 5 minutes and in my stomach within 10. As I mentioned before, this is ENORMOUS. For $9 you get a huge portion of bacon and the croissant is amazing. If you're in City Market and debating where to eat, stop by Gomez BBQ.
