I was in Indiana for a work trip and we stopped for brunch at Tupelo Honey! It was awesome. The decor is so cute at we all enjoyed our food! We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. These were cut a little thick, but otherwise we liked them. Especially the grits that came around them. I ordered the Mountain Bowl because I knew I wanted grits and potatoes, but with this dish I wouldn't have to choose! I'd get both. It was absolutely delicious. Others ordered the Farmhouse Omlette and chicken & waffles. We also had mimosas which were only $3 on the Sunday brunch special! Honestly, I don't think you can really go wrong here. This is an unexpected gem right in downtown Indy. The $3 mimosa was a great way to start the meal. I had the Biscuits For Good and they did not disappoint. BAD SERVICE once again. I've been going to Tupelo for years. They started out awesome but have done nothing but a steady decline into below average food and service. My last attempt at eating here was a complete failure on their part. A simple food order that was supposed to be ready at 1:10 took until 1:45 past the pickup time while I stood waiting in a restaurant that had several tables waiting to be cleaned and as I was standing there a woman who was at a table and had food brought to her in a bag commented that she was trying to pay her bill for food that was ordered to eat in and had to be bagged to-go because it had taken so long. Very disappointed in my experience here last night. We had a reserved table at 7pm, and arrived around 6:55. It was a nice night out, and would have appreciated sitting outside, but was not offered to us. We were taken to another table inside. Our server took about ten minutes to acknowledge us, and then a couple minutes to introduce herself. She took our drink orders, and took about five minutes to come back with waters, and another five minutes for our alcohol drinks. I was surprised to find a long black hair on the top of my drink. The bartender didn't have long black hair, so not sure who's that was. Told the server, and told her I don't want a replacement. No apologies or any way of making it up. Disgusting. We had fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and biscuits for appetizer. The fried green tomatoes were tough. The fried pickles were good- nothing amazing. The biscuits were the best part of the meal. Our meals took about 45 minutes to come out from when we ordered. I had the half chicken platter for my meal. The chicken was juicy, but lacked any sort of seasoning in the skin. The mashed potatoes were 75% milk. I was asked if I wanted gravy. Sure I thought. No mention that you have to pay 75 cents for gravy (who charges for gravy for mashed potatoes?) The Mac and cheese was bland and parts of it were cold. My father got the same meal, and he didn't receive pickles with his. Overall, poor and delayed service and mediocre food for the price. A small group of us went to this restaurant after morning puppy yoga, and it was a treat! I prefer savory, filling breakfast options over sugary, dessert like breakfast if I'm trying to wake up and be productive, which this place definitely has! The menu is full of healthy, yet unique options. The chai latte I ordered was mild and not too heavy, making it a great complimentary drink to my meal. I ordered the shrimp & grits, which was fluffy, flavorful, and beautiful. I wish it had a little more shrimp, but the dish was still very filling and a great portion size. If you are looking for non seasoned southern inspired food, you absolutely will enjoy Tupelo Honey. The sauces and certain items may have a flavor but they are not seasoned. We ordered the fried okra & fried tomatoes. Both tasted like they sliced the vegetables, coated them and fried them. No seasoning on the okra or tomatoes themselves and then covered in an unseasoned coating/batter. So basically flavorless food to be dipped in a "flavorful"sauce. Compared to any southern cooking that I have ever had this is beyond dismal. I ordered shrimp and grits and thought that surely the shrimp has to be seasoned because it's not coated in anything. Man was I wrong. Unseasoned shrimp covered in sauces that were tolerable but even being "gourmet" southern missed the mark. The bit of goat cheese grits that I tried were ok but other than cheese didn't taste like they added one thing. The upside: our server was nice and attentive. This restaurant is a testament to how much taste buds, flavor palates, etc. differ because I am baffled that this place gets over 1 star. Stopped in Indy for a couple days and heard Tupelo is amazing so of course I had to check it out. As soon as I stepped in, the nature-inspired vibes from the hanging flowers and plants everywhere mixed with the stylish decor really impressed me. I was seated quickly at the bar and the bartenders at that time were great and punctual and making sure I got a menu and everything else I needed. I definitely appreciated that they weren't constantly approaching me, but they read my cues with knowing when I was ready to order or needed something. I was really pleased with the service that I received. The menu had a mixture of American comfort food as well as classic Southern dishes. I took several glances at the food other were ordering and they all looked so appealing and appetizing. I decided to order something that I haven't tried anywhere else, so I ordered the Southern Shakshuka, which is their own unique spin-off to the original. This is my first time passing by this restaurant since moving out of the city, and I'm so glad we stopped. The food was outstanding and looked as good as it tasted. The drinks we ordered were equally satisfying. For starters we ordered the fried pickles, which honestly may have been my favorite ever! And then for our meal we ordered the sweet and spicy chicken and waffles and classic chicken and waffles. Arianna (sp?) our server was super sweet and efficient. Tupelo Honey is a fantastic date night spot with solid food and a fantastic vibe! Tried it out for the first time for a Valentine's date last week. Its fresh and fun atmosphere was a welcomed contrast to the cold and dank weather. We got a reservation ahead of time so we were able to sit right away. Our waitress was pleasant, but transparent of the fact that she was new and hadn't tried many things on the menu yet. No worries...I'm never afraid to explore a menu! Lol! We knew we wanted to start off with the fried green tomatoes, and they were fantastic. The fry on them was perfect, not too greasy. The tomatoes were fresh, and it was all laid over a soft velvety bed of grits. For the entrée, I went with the shrimp and grits while my wife ordered the chicken and waffles. While I thought the grits were a little soupy for me, all the flavors were there and I was not disappointed. Wife loved the chicken waffles. Great flavor on the chicken! I also ordered one biscuit on the side with the peach jam for a little something sweet. Not gonna lie, I wanted to drink that peach jam! The only bummer of the night is that we ordered the signature margarita and mule and both were pretty weak. Not sure if the bartender was just having an off night, but it was what it was. This is my third time eating at Tupelo Honey and it might just be a comfort food for me at this point but isn't that what all soul food is? I always get the chicken and waffles and brussel sprouts. The chicken was very flavorful, not too spicy, not too sweet and the waffle was soft as well. We love to try places we have never been to before when participating in DEVOUR INDY. This time we sampled Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen and Bar. This place is adjacent to the Alexander Hotel. Parking is easy; we used a nearby garage. First, the cocktails were amazing. In fact my wife said her Espresso Martini was the best she had ever had. Our appetizers of fried green tomatoes and crispy brussel sprouts were very good with the tomatoes served on a bed of grits and drizzled with a red pepper sauce. Our entrees of Shrimp and Grits and half fried chicken were brought out hot and quickly. The grits were packed with shrimp and the 18 hour brined honey dusted chicken was juicy on the inside and so so crunchy outside. HOWEVER. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENING WAS THE SPECTACULAR SERVICE WE RECEIVED FROM ASHLEY. She was very attentive, very informative of how the menu was prepared and all smiles. Most importantly, she displayed a distinctive pride in restaurant she was representing and the quality of food she brought to the table. We had a bogo offer so we decided to come here for a lunch. We scored free parking close by and as downtown wasn't too busy I didn't put in for reservations. There were only a couple other tables occupied. Our server greeted us and took our drink order and food order quickly. We were advised they are changing their menu Thursday so they no longer have collard greens. We got 2 orders of the biscuits for a cause. The proceeds go towards a fun for employees in need. The biscuits are like a drop biscuit with a light crunch on the outside and soft inside The blueberry jam is good. Peach one was just like you took diced peaches out of a can and used them The gravy pairs really well with them as a dipping option. The honey they bring to table is even better. I ordered the smothered chicken with 2 sides Chicken was breaded lightly and you get 2 pieces however the chicken was a little tough and dry. The gravy is good and creamy and the basil is a nice added touch Chicken Pablano soup is full of chicken and very flavorful I would definitely get this again Grits are very creamy and were good. Hubby ordered white meat fried chicken with Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts stole the show. They had a nice little char to them and you get a huge portion put a sprinkle of salt on time and they are amazing. The chicken lacked flavor once you got thru the skin. A little dry. Decent fried chicken but have had better Towards the end of the meal our server left and didnt say anything to use so it was a while before someone came and checked on us and by that time we finished with our meal and could have used refills prior to finishing our meal. They also bought the lemons with most seeds ever. There is a fine line between good meal coupled with good service. It's about timing. Cocktails should be out before meal and with appetizers. If you order a second, while waiting... it should still precede meal. If 4/5 dinners arrive, we all are waiting for the 5th. It needs to be priority 1. The meals were good. Good portions. The tomato soup was the consistency of marinara sauce. Add some liquid before serving. The fried green tomatoes were best dish on the table. The fried pickles too, were served hot and promptly. My partner had been to another location before and suggested we try this one for brunch--my first time here. We made reservations for a Saturday afternoon and were seated right away. This is a much overdue review as this was Valentine's weekend. We had a 6pm reservation, but didn't need it as they were able to seat others as quickly as us. The place was brightly decorated and had a nice romantic warm glow to it and the table was nice and clean as was the rest of the restaurant. I stayed with water to drink whereas my wife chose the ginger turmeric tonic. I tasted her tonic and found it had a pleasantly light ginger flavor. We started with fried pickles. While there were a lot of friend pickle chips, they were very thin. While that did make them crispy, I tend to prefer them more thickly cut. The fried pickles came with a nice and tangy ranch dipping sauce. I had the dark meat fried chicken with two drumsticks and a thigh dusted with a pleasantly spiced honey coating and a side salad with ranch dressing. The chicken was nice and crunchy and the honey coating had a nice spiciness to it. I just wish there had been a little more meat on the bone. The salad was colorful and crunchy, but had pickled red onion and I dislike pickled red onions, so I took them out of the salad. However, the ranch dressing was good and creamy. There were sweet pickle chips on the side of the plate, but I'm not a big fan of those, so I didn't eat them. My wife also had the dark meat chicken with two drumsticks and a thigh, but coated in a sorghum black pepper dusting. She had a side of braised bacon collards. She enjoyed her chicken and loved the collards. I tried a taste of the collards, but I'm not a fan of collards. So even though the bacon flavor was nice and smokey, I didn't care for the collards. However, that's not the restaurant's fault, that's just my own personal taste. When we finished with dinner, we both shared a nice and creamy banana pudding. It had a nice rich banana flavor with chunks of fresh banana throughout and whipped cream on top. It was a perfect ending to a mostly good meal. We would be willing to return. read more

We always like to try a few new restaurants during DevourIndy so we decided to try Tupelo Honey this week. It was definitely a good choice. It is right in the center of downtown and walking distance to a lot of venues. There is metered street parking in front and also on the side depending on what time you go. There's also a parking garage one street over. We made a reservation just to be safe but 5:00 on a weekday wasn't hard to be seated. Our seater/server was very friendly and helpful with menu advice. I had the best espresso martini I've ever had and my meal was plentiful and tasty. I started with the grilled Brussels sprouts. They were delicious and I had enough left for my lunch the next day.
