Was a little hesitant to stop by this place, which is situated in the Safeway shopping center which doesn't have a great track record of decent restaurants. However, I'm glad I stopped in. Service: Very service oriented, and owner was happy to explain the menu and make suggestions. Food: Spring Rolls: Fresh and cilantro served on the side Chicken Pho: Nice flavor to the broth, tender white meat chicken and nicely cooked noodles. Saigon Pork Sandwich: Nice cuts or pork (no fat), good amount of meat and freshly baked roll. Not quite as "flavorful" as Lee's, but still good. Came here for dinner after a few miles of power walking. Let me say the service was pretty bad from the moment we walked in. The prices are a bit high too, for a bowl of pho. I ordered the beef pho and my friend ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. The pho broth didn't have much flavor and the condiments are very basic. The beef in my soup tasted old and a bit tough. This is my local-go-to Vietnamese restaurant for my work. Definitely meets my work-lunch expectations: gets out at a decent time and fills you up. I've ordered through the OrderAhead App for this restaurant which was a great experience. The to-go items were well presented, fresh and delicious by the time i brought the food to my work place. Reviews are inherently subjective, but my policy is also to take a star off reviews when the tip policy seems a bit aggressive...in this case, paying with credit prompts you to pay min 15% tip. Traditionally for counter service it should be change or up to a buck or two (think of a tip jar). They're kind of greedy and that rubs me the wrong way (just trying to squeeze extra bucks out of people as a quasi hidden fee via guilt). read more

Wow! We used to eat here a lot and loved it. We went back for lunch today and besides the general service issues (only one fork for 2 salads, sighing at asking for hot sauce), the food was terrible. My beef bowl was skimpy on a double portion of beef but I was glad because the beef was dry and leathery. There was about a tablespoon of the pickled carrots and radish and absolutely no flavor in the dressing. The green papaya salad had zero flavor! I was shocked. And the spring rolls had no carrots/radish, no cilantro or Thai basil leaves. It was lettuce, noodles and shrimp. Even the Thai iced tea was bland...I could find the Thai iced tea flavor but it was so watered down. I don't know how they have gone downhill so far. I was craving Vietnamese food and we had 30 mins to kill while we waited on a movie. It's been 2 years and I decided to give this place a chance again. I ordered the lotus salad and told them NOT to include onions. After 20 mins ( not even sure why it takes so long to assemble a salad when we were the only customer ). They delivered a salad full of onions. I brought it back and told them I cannot eat onions. The girl brought it back to the back and reminded them that I ordered it without onions. 5 mins later, they brought it back out. I noticed that half the ingredients they had listed on the menu was not on the salad. In addition, the bottom half is the salad all bean sprouts! Really?! A Vietnamese lotus salad does NOT have bran sprouts. They were being cheap by adding filler in it. The carrots, cilantro and diakon were missing. The rau ram mint was missing - that was half the ingredients. At this point, I was not happy but thought, Oh well. I tried it, and it TASTED LIKE ONIONs!! Super strong onion taste!. I immediately took it to them and told them that they should not do business like this. If I was allergic to onions, they need to take it seriously cause someone could get hurt. I told them they just took it back there and removed the onions. They denied it. I then asked them why half the ingredients were missing and there were mostly bean sprouts at the bottom. They said it was because the menu was old. Really? You couldn't stock the cheap ingredients that are essential to this dish? You are missing more than half the ingredients. I ordered the pork and chicken sandwich through the app and picked it up in store. The pork was decent, but the chicken was quite terrible. The chicken was shaped in a perfect circle and apparently it is prepared by pounding the meat into a paste, wrapping it with a banana leaf, and boiling it, but it it wasn't for me. Great for a quick bite! Big Bites offers big portions for a low price. You'll be spending under $10 for a huge portion of pho or noodles. The food is standard Vietnamese cuisine with nothing particularly noteworthy other than consistent quality in most of their dishes. The decor is also a bit odd as it feels like Big Bites kept the decor of their previous establishment and added their own. The food here is really good. I went here tonight for dinner with 3 other people. We all ordered different items and we all enjoyed them. Our food came out one plate at a time. My soup was given to the wrong person and then a second incorrect dish was given to that same person. I can chop all of this up to the restaurant being new and the employees being new as well. I ordered the spicy noodle soup with lots of meat (I can't remember what it was called). It had great flavor, and a good amount of spice, however it came out a little less than hot. I've been eating at BB for the past couple of years. Hands down the best Pho I have had outside of Vietnam. I love the Organic Chicken, and the Filet Mignon Pho. I've enjoyed other dishes, esp. Banh Mi and noodle bowls (I found the salad just so-so). I'm a regular, and eat there at least once a week, often twice. The pho is clean, fresh and doesn't make me feel too full or sick afterwards. The broth is complex, and just a little on the sweet side, I like that. The crispy shallots are the best! And the pho is crammed with noodles and, veggies and meat (if ordered). It's a great deal! Because this place is seriously homemade food, the quality may vary from time to time - sometimes the chicken breast in the soup is a little overdone - but it does not ruin the dish. I've also enjoyed Banh Mi a few times (very very good, very fresh bread) and the noodle dishes are perfect and hit the spot. The only dish and drink I have had and not enjoyed was the salad (just not worth the price for the amount I got) and their Vietnamese coffee wasn't very good. I think part of the problem is it's hard to get good staff. By and large, the owner does a wonderful job and her head chef too. If they are in the back, I'm guaranteed a great meal. But if I see an unfamiliar face there (like the time I had the coffee), results and quality may vary - but never to the point that I wish I hadn't stopped by. I see other reviewers comment on the length of time to get your order. Yes, it does vary. Often pho is a 5-10 min. wait - but so worth it! At the peak of lunch hour, it can be hard to get a spot. THEY SERVED MY OFFICE ROTTEN CHICKEN!! Monday I ordered food from Big Bites Eatery Catering and when they arrived, I noticed we had an extra tray of a dish I had not ordered, and assumed it was part of the DIY bowl meal, so I served it to our office. Once people started eating, it was very apparent something was incredibly wrong with this extra dish. I had the chef come over to take a look and he confirmed that this was chicken left sitting in their hot box that had been there so long that it was fermented- the texture of the chicken was like playdough and it was encased in a thick, sticky sauce. The chef said he didn't know how long it was sitting there but it had to be at least a week to get to that consistency. I have never experienced anything like this but am very concerned about their kitchen safety. Luckily, mostly everyone here spit it out, so no one got sick, but their ignorance could've caused a much bigger problem for our office. To make things worse, the owner is has not contacted me directly since she found out about this to apologize, so I have no option but to review. Awful, awful experience. read more

The food here also comes out relatively quick which makes it a good quick lunch option. I got the chia lychee tea and the flank steak with rib eye pho. The chia lychee tea was a little too sweet for me but was still decent. The broth for the pho was sweeter than some other pho places but was balanced out with the beef flavor. The meat was also decent quality with a good ratio of meat to fat. Noodles were also cooked well. The only bad part about the pho was that the bean sprouts had brown tips, which signaled that they were not fresh at all. Ingredients here are decent quality and the food comes out quick, making this a good quick lunch option. Still nothing special. read more

I've never had a terrible Vietnamese sandwich until I came here. I was on yelp, and this was on the top of the list for Vietnamese food. I stopped by ordered a Vietnamese sandwich and a Vietnamese coffee. Sandwich looked very well made until I took my first bite... bread was extremely stale (i imagines that this is how cardboard taste like). The coffee tasted like iced water with a hint of hazelnut. I've had bad Vietnamese coffee before so I won't base this review too much on that. Overall the sandwich was terrible, it took about 15 minutes to have my food, and the coffee was bad. So I regularly go to the Safeway next to Big Bites and have been meaning to try it for a while. So tonight I checked on their menu and was happy to see that there were vegan options available. I ended up ordering the veggie pho and the lemon grass curry tofu. I got it to go and split the dishes with my (also vegan) mom. The pho was good if I had just had that I would probably have rated this at 3 or 4 stars. Unfortunately, we found a big piece of chicken(bigger than the tofu) in the curry. Luckily I and my mother are not vegan for health reasons, but this is still something I would have rather had not happen. tldr If you are vegetarian/vegan or have allergies(worried about cross contamination) I do not recommend going here. read more

My first time trying Vietnamese sandwiches, and I'm hooked! I got the Saigon style pork sandwich and it was great from the first bite to the last! Cooked really well, garnished with fresh veggies, simply a great value for the price! I'm not super adventurous, so it may take me a minute to try some of the more 'traditional' dishes they offer. **Pho Quest #50** Big Bites is the latest tenant to this strip mall that houses Safeway as well as a Dickey's BBQ and the fairly popular Momo's Sushi. It's not too far off from Shoreline Century Theaters and is a popular lunch spot with a crowded and busy parking lot. The place is very clean, with bright lighting, several tables and a refrigerator with lots of beverage choices. The menu focuses on Vietnamese staples: banh mi, noodle soups, and spring rolls. My order: Spring Rolls - $5.50. They were out of shrimp so asked if they could substitute grilled chicken. Two rolls, sliced in half, were plated nicely, prepared fresh, and served with peanut sauce. Tasty, albeit taking over 15 minutes to prepare. Pho - $9.95. Ordered a beef and waited for about 20 minutes. Solidly presented in a large bowl with a few cuts of flank steak on top. The bowl was mainly noodles though and served with a small side of condiments: bean sprouts, basil, sliced peppers, and a wedge of lime. Sriracha and hoisin sauce are self serve as are the utensils, although the chopsticks are at the table. The flank steak was nice quality but only a handful of slices. Without any accompanying meatball, tendon, tripe, or beef cuts (not really to be expected here), it's a very lonely bowl, especially at $10. Broth was savory, but otherwise average and the noodles, while prepared well, were simply notable for quantity. Overall, given the location and target demographics (nearby apartment complexes, office workers), I was hoping Big Bites would be similar to Los Gatos Mom and Pop gem, the Sandwich Maker. Obviously, I don't expect quality to be equal to Little Saigon, but the inflated prices and long preparation times are the opposite of most Vietnamese shop out there. That being said, the clean decor, online ordering (20% off, which I'd just prefer in lower starting prices), wifi access, and credit card acceptance might work here, although I'm willing to drive for my pho fix.
