I like this little restaurant (Big Bites). It is sort of a Vietnamese restaurant but atypical. I especially enjoyed the Bun Bo Hue soup, which is spicy with noodles lemongrass, slices of beef, a shrimp sauce and more; but this is for people who like spicy food. This soup is much better than the traditional pho soups that other Vietnamese restaurants offer. Also, I liked the boneless lemongrass curry chicken thigh. Their grass-fed filet mignon pho soup is better than most pho soups. The beef quality is good. Next time I will try the traditional Vietnamese sandwich. Big Bites is never crowded. It seems most customers either order pickup or use a delivery service. The restaurant is always quite clean. The lighting is excellent and there is plenty of free parking. read more

Tentatively from either a 4 or a 5. Originally was going to type up a 5-star review until I saw such a low rating? How can that be? Well for my first order, Caviar offered $10 off a $25 order. The first portion of my order was Bo Vien Pho with extra Bo Vien. This is where it gets tricky! Most places will only add halves of Bo vien and only maybe 3 (so 6 cuts) to whatever 3 or 4 in the pho already. So I was already had in my mind that the portion would be small. Also ordered a chia lychee/longan drink. WOW! The portion for my pho was A LOT. And I WISH every Viet place did this. They quartered the Bo Vien which is different BUT only because it fits better with the broth container!! It got to the point where I couldn't even finish. For the first time I had a meal that fed both my boyfriend and I. And I wasn't even going to share because I'm so used to Bo Vien Pho for one person with measly portion. The pho broth was HOT. Most delivery for pho, the broth won't even cook the rare steak. But I can tell it would if I had ordered it. I also left a message for no bean sprouts and by golly. The first viet spot to actually not give me bean sprouts and not make me feel like an asshole throwing it down the garbage disposal. The half lime really threw me for a loop! Most restaurants only quarter a DRY lime, but not this place! Their packaging was perfect, they had retrofit a cardboard at the bottom of the bag so it was stable. And the bowl fit everything with no overspill. I forgot to put,"less ice" in the notes for my drink. BUT it already came with less ice!?!? Amazing. The drink wasn't too cold or watered down by the time I was halfway with my meal. The chia seeds was a great touch. So had to reorder something from here because I had a 5-star experience with the delivery with the pho and drink. When I reordered, I bought a Cha Lua Banh Mi. But it was rather confusing? The text said Shredded Chicken (Cha Lua). Which are two completely different proteins. Just to make sure I typed in: No chicken, just Cha Lua. Also asked for extra diakon and carrots with their aioli. The bread was kind of hard but most baguettes are. Their pickled diakon and carrots were great! The cucumbers was just enough. No Jalapeños though? And their Vietnamese Aioli was very unique!! Was literally the shining star! It was a cilantro aioli! Because I was looking for the cilantro. But as I was biting into it, you can taste it in the sauce. Marvelous. So the only disappointment was that I didn't receive Cha Lua. I received cured pork. Which was rather confusing. I don't know if they had run out? Or if this was their version of Cha Lua? I was really looking forward to it to traditional cha lua. But that aioli they made was out of this world and pretty innovative. Give this place a try and ignore the, below 4 star review, because I just don't see it. So hop on yelp and search for the closest Vietnamese place that has banh mis righ? This place was on the way and we de died to stop. Ordered a pork sandwich, then was shocked by the price.. $9 for a Vietnamese sandwich?!? That's more expensive than high end sandwich places around town. I would venture a guess that the average price of a Vietnamese sandwich in the Bay Area is under $4. That's because they are cheap and GOOOOOD! That's the lure of Vietnamese sandwiches, no? But ok, we are hungry so, we just paid the asked price. But wait, they ran out of the pork... so pick something else :-( Once the sandwich arrived, it was yummy, bread was crispy, flavors were great.... but still not a $9 sandwich. The food is solid, without a doubt. I had a pork banh mi and it was really good. I waited much longer than I expected to, given they were working on a catering order, but it came in the Nick of time, I shoved it in my pie hole, and ran back to work. The bread was good, the veggies were fresh, and the meat was plentiful and flavorful. $13 for a sandwich is steep in my (cheap) book, but I don't feel like I wasted my money either. This is a casual bahn me and pho place that we really enjoy. It always looks very clean and the staff is friendly. I really like the bahn mis here. My favourite is the grilled chicken. The bread is fresh and crusty for the sandwiches and they are delicious. The pho is pretty good. I also really enjoy the lemongrass curry chicken soup and the Vietnamese beef stew. First time ordering take out from here and trying bahn mi in general. My husband and I were very impressed considering the hit or miss reviews on here. My husband has had bahn mi before and he said this was pretty good! We got shrimp spring rolls, Saigon style grilled pork bahn mi, and traditional Vietnamese bahn mi. The traditional had ground chicken and cured pork which was super delicious and went well with the veggies and sauce. I know that bahn mi is supposed to be made with very crispy baguette but this was not too hard where it would hurt to eat and be difficult. Will definitely order from them again! read more

There are a large variety of drinks. They also have free water. They have a lot of organic products . Everything here is made to order so it will be extremely fresh. I ordered spring rolls very fresh and well done. I would prefer romaine lettuce for the crunch but it's all a personal preference. The banh mi sandwich was pretty good and fresh to order. The bread roll was pretty soft . The price was reasonable for the 2 sandwiches, spring rolls, & one drink $30. Pretty good for a date night . Overall 4 out of 5 just because it took a little long to get our food but the quality I'd definitely there. Next time I would get filet mignon pho that is very original. Banh mi? Yes please!! I grew up in San Jose when I could get a huge banh mi in crusty fluffy bread for only a measly $1.50! Sadly there aren't any good ones on the Peninsula. When I'm absolutely desperate, I'll go to the Lees sandwich in Sunnyvale. Big Bites is definitely pricier but you can taste the price diff in the quality of the ingredients. I ordered the combo steamed pork and Saigon pork sandwich. Bread was not as big and fluffy as Huong Lan or Thanh Huong but it hits the spot. Very friendly staff and super clean facilities! I'd classify this place as a "Viet-Style sandwich" since their bread is chewier and not as fluffy as the rice flour style baguettes traditionally used for banh mi. Pork was well flavored cooked to order toand the steamed chicken roll was delicious. We also got a side of the combo egg rolls and asked for the nuoc cham on the side. Yummy!! If you know anything about Vietnamese food you'll know that this place is mediocre at best. The phở/ bún bò huế broth is very bland and tasteless. I can tell not much time or effort goes into the soup. Everytime I've ordered a spring roll (gỏi cuốn) it's fallen apart. The bánh mì is passable at best, but that isn't saying much because a sandwich is easy to make. The meat is definitely microwaved right before assembly because most of the time it is too hot. Never coming back to this place. If you live in the area and want a delicious, authentic tasting Vietnamese food, then head to Phở To Chau. They are actually worth your time/money. read more

The workers are slower than snails and I am sure I just saw the cashier move over to the sandwich prep table to cut a lime without washing her hands before touching the food. 3.5 stars So I was lame and had to be vegetarian on Jack-in-the-box day with my coworker. There is no veggie option there, not even a salad... So he grabbed his sandwich since he had been dying to try the chain, and we headed across the parking lot to find some food for me. We ended up at this place as they have vegetarian pho - with vegetarian broth! It is very nice of them to label the broth, because that is probably the single biggest cause of accidental meat consumption for vegetarians. I wasn't expecting a whole lot. Vegetarian broth is usually a bit tasteless for me. However, to my surprise, they do have a pretty favourful broth, if only a bit on the sweet side. The bowl was big and packed with vegetables, and it would definitely satisfy a big eater. My only concern other than the sweetness would be the pieces of silken tofu in it - geez people, there are so many kinds of tofu, some of which work perfectly with a big bowl of hot soup... Why do you always default to silken tofu?! Either way, I'm bumping up to a 4 star for now because the pho was satisfying for a veggie stomach, and that is pretty rare. I hope to try their beef pho in the future and see if it measures up! read more

When I first found out that a Vietnamese sandwich place was opening up, I was excited because there are not that many food choices within a short walking distance. Then when it finally opened and I strolled in and saw the $7 price tag on those banh mis, I walked out. I get it. The rent is probably high. They figure a higher income crowd won't mind paying $7 for a banh mi even though you could get one for half price elsewhere like downtown San Jose. Well I came here with some coworkers and I just ordered a drip coffee and egg rolls which came out to $7. I initially ordered a fresh soy mocha but they were "running low". Now what does that exactly mean? You either have it or you don't so I came away with drip coffee. Egg rolls were vegetarian. It says that they offer a choice of pork, chicken, or tofu but she said they don't offer a choice of meat anymore. Again I didn't understand that. Either way I paid for an overpriced snack. She said that they were short staffed which I can understand but she was rude about it. She gave the impression that her workers were just playing hooky. All in all, I would not return here. Big Bites is a great spot in Mountain View for Vietnamese food. Located in the corner of the Safeway plaza off Shoreline, this fairly new restaurant is clean and modern with great service. We tried the bun bo hue and the chicken vermicelli bowls and both were tasty and good portion sizes. Pricing is not the cheapest but I am just happy to get decent Viet food in this area. A bun bo hue is $10. Another plus is they take credit card including American Express! Yay for those that never have cash on them! read more

Fast forward a year or two, the food has gone down in quality, the confused older lady by the counter (the owner?) rarely get your order right and service is basically non existent. It's too bad, it used to be a great place to go to. The one item on their menu that I still recommend that you get: beef pho. The broth is tasty and the rare beef surprisingly fresh and flavorful. Got take out after a super busy work day when I was starving- this could partially explain how quickly I devoured everything. However, I give much of the credit to Big Bites for making such yummy food! Everything we had was delicious, solid Vietnamese food with great flavors. Papaya salad- seriously one of my favorites. I usually prefer Thai style best, but this one was absolutely wonderful and I ate most of it (although my 3.5 yr old and husband also got a few bites in!) Veggie pho- REALLY good broth, great selection of veggies and a good enough amount of tofu. Really hit the spot! Bun Bo Hue- husband's choice that he really enjoyed. Tried Big Bites for the first time through DoorDash. This will now be my new go-to spot for Banh Mi and Pho! Ordered the Filet Mignon Pho, Chinese BBQ Pork sandwich, Nutella Cheesecake, and Chia Lychee Iced Tea and everything was delicious and fresh. Very impressed with how aromatic and fresh the pho broth was (not too salty or heavy). The iced tea was perfectly refreshing and not too sweet! I had a grilled beef banh mi and it was really good! Bread was lightly toasted and the meat was perfect. The vegetables inside were also very tasty making the whole sandwich come together. I'm downgrading my rating again after a few return visits that left me disappointed. As I mentioned in my original review, I had been willing to pay these MUCH higher than average prices for basic Vietnamese food based on high quality ingredients and the convenient location. However, on the past couple visits, I noticed that the food hasn't been prepared with the same care as before and the overall quality has degraded (bread has been lackluster with no crunch, the texture of the meat seemed iffy). These visits reminded me of my very first visit which was underwhelming (see original review). Also, they dropped the side salad that used to come with banh mi without lowering the cost or mentioning the change. Though I never loved the salad in the first place (and know it's probably extremely inexpensive to make), I thought it seemed strange to just drop it without changing the menu, lowering the price or offering an alternative. As of today, their website clearly states: "All sandwiches come with cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon radish, jalapenos, cilantro, and aioli. They're served with the side salad of the day topped with chopped fresh-roasted peanuts." Too bad. I thought I would be a regular here and liked the idea of supporting a family business, but the lack of consistency is not worth the extra expense. read more

Unfortunately this place did not provide big nor yummy bites for us. The shrimp po boy came with 4 measly shrimp (small shrimp, lots of batter). The grilled pork that came w/ the bun (vermicelli dish) was the worst vietnamese grilled pork i've ever had; thin sliced, dry, very sad. It's a clean looking place, decent service, looked busy with catering orders of sandwiches. Just not authentic Vietnamese food for me. I've been a loyal customer to Big Bites but today, I ordered the grilled tofu bahn mi sandwhich and chocolate chip cookie via door dash and both items were burnt! The bread was charred and the grilled tofu was also overdone. The cookie when you flip over had burnt spots. Bun Bo Hue(spicy beef noodle soup) here is excellent and there isn't another Vietnamese restaurant in the Mountain View area that serves it. The spicy soup had a rich flavor and the meat is super tender. The owner is super sweet and always remembers me and my family. I'm so glad they are here in Mountain View. Most who knows about this special Vietnamese soup is only available down in the San Jose area or maybe a few places in San Francisco. Besides this soup, I've enjoyed the veggie Pho, too. Full of veggies with a delicious soup base. Be sure to order some sweet potatoes fries because they make them with crunchy edges to munch down on with a creamy sauce on the side to dip. Authentic! I had passed this place many times, but I didn't have an opportunity to try. I read many reviews here before and found they are really variable, good and bad. So the best way is to evaluate by myself. I had Pho. My mood today was Pho soup. Actually there are only three pho choice here (Pho or Seafood Pho or Vege), so I just chose simple pho. The amount is big enough for me. The soup temperature was also hot enough. The flavor...it's authentic. Meat and sprount was tasty too. The soup had deep umami. This place also has other menu such as rice noodles and sandwiches. Catering and delivery seem popular as well. It's on the expensive end for banh mi (in comparison to the ones you can get for less than $6 in Oakland's Chinatown or the Tenderloin) but this is definitely one of the better Vietnamese sandwiches I've had in a long time. Stumbled upon Big Bites appropriately during lunch time and ordered their Saigon Style Seasoned Pork ($7.95). It took about 10-15ish minutes to make but it was worth the wait. (They make every sandwich when you order so it's fresh, nada mean?). The pork was seasoned and cooked deliciously and was proportionately paired with all the classic ingredients. It came with a side coleslaw salad with a light vinaigrette as well. I can see why some reviewers have complained about the speed of service. It's not a full service restaurant, making it a perfect place for a quick bite and casual meal. I wanted to get something quick, so it was a good choice for lunch. I ordered the Grilled Pork Sandwich and the Eggroll. Both were cooked to order, but they came out pretty fast. Definitely less than 15 minutes. I like the Eggroll a lot. It was tasty. Two came in an order and both we're quite substantial in size. The sandwich was okay. The meat filling was tasty but the sandwich needed more tang and heat. I'm also used to the crispy on the outside and airy in the inside baguette for my banh mi. Their baguette is denser and a little chewier. Next time I'd like to try their noodle soup.
