Such a colorful and creative place...glad we found it. After an obligatory grocery refill in Homestead, the other half announced "I could go for a latte right now." Well, there is nothing interesting at the waterfront, but the Yelp map suggested Biddle's. We wound through Rankin to get there, the color exploding in the suddenly upscale neighborhood. I lived in Wilkinsburg and where I lived looks nothing like this. Thanks to Yelp we tried the Curry Latte. It was lovely. It indeed tastes like curry. The warm spices blend with the warmth, coffee, and hint of sweetness. We shared it and enjoyed the deck. Their menu is indeed complicated and dizzying. I will have to study it further in advance of a return trip. They are advertising food trucks on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Late afternoon on a weekday there were plenty of seats everywhere and it was quiet. We tidied up a Free Book Shelf across the street on our way out. read more

Intelligent business owners know that it's best to leave their political agenda ambiguous, but this is not the case at Biddle's. Keep in mind, I would have the exact same reaction about any establishment with hateful, violent art directed at Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton. It's unprofessional and off-putting. I understand that they are passionate about their beliefs, and I respect their right to display this sort of artwork, but I know plenty of other people in the neighborhood that also find it to be in very poor taste, not to mention bizarre. Unfortunately, this isn't my only issue with this place. The decor is cluttered and resembles a flea market or a junk store. The clientele at my one and only visit was a bit more boisterous than one would expect at a coffee shop. Lots of hipster-looking twenty-somethings bustling around, yelling across the shop and talking loudly. The girl at the table behind me was regularly cackling at a volume that was clearly audible through my noise-canceling headphones. I do understand what they are going for, but I found this environment to be very distracting as someone who wanted to quietly get some work done while enjoying a coffee. I would be prepared for this on a college campus, but not so much in Regent Square. The staff seemed friendly enough, but the prices were quite high for many of the menu items (I just stuck to a plain black coffee). The shorter guy at the register with the cycling cap and long beard was pleasant and helpful. However, the wait was also long enough to be of note for something as simple as a plain-jane coffee with nothing in it. The coffee itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special, either. Then again, I assume most of the clientele comes more for the ambiance and the socialization for anything on the menu. I live close enough to this shop that it should be my go-to, but it's really not a good spot for someone with the desire to simply enjoy a nice, quiet cup of coffee. I prefer to walk right past this place on the way to 61B, which is more my speed. But if you're a loud hipster type who wants to be seen somewhere "hip" and "edgy", head on over to Biddle's. read more

A cute coffee shop in this area. It is an old house, so there are two floors of space to study, hang out, and grab a cup of coffee. The decor is cute with lots of quirky stuff like our table was made from an old door. The only thing was that our table was pretty sticky. They have a pretty extensive coffee and tea menu. I had a nutella latte, which was delicious. I also had a grilled cheese which was pretty yummy too. A nice place to do some work or catch up with friends! read more

This coffee shop is adorable and tucked away in Regent Square. The decor is quirky and fun with a nice patio to take advantage of in the warmer months. I love how if you order a coffee to drink there you'll be given a ceramic (often mismatched) mug to drink it from. Cute detail! Popped in here after working out in Edgemont. Great surprise and a great reason to let your fingers do the walking instead of visiting the usual haunts. Cute neighbourhood that would be good for a dog walk pre or post coffee in the spring/summer/fall. Great space, eclectic...full of students...decent tunes...nice sized outdoor seating area. Parking is pretty decent as well. Being of the late 30's and early 40's crowd it's not our most comfortable hangout but it's for sure worth a second trip because the Americano's were great. read more

I have the most pleasant experience every time I am here! Great coffee and everyone here is so friendly, both staff and customers. There's so much to look at too, art and random little things all over that are fun to discover (i.e. the mosaic tables, messages of tolerance and inclusion). Work outside! Play pinball! Discover a local author! I love Biddle's. Regent Square had been in need of a KaterBean alternative for a long time. They really considered the details in the creation of this place. It's a freelancer/student's dream. Reliable wireless, so many plugs (even outside!), and decent non-junk/vegetarian food for when you get hangry. I've never heard the music be too loud or obnoxious. The usually-open garage door creates a non-stuffy and therefore less-painful place to work during hours when you resent that you're working. Their loose-leaf tea selection is pricey but high-quality, so it's good in a pinch when you can't get to Prestogeorge or the Tea Loft in Allison Park. There's pinball in the back (woot!) and there are performances sometimes, so it pays to seat yourself strategically depending on your level of noise tolerance. read more

Really great food and coffee. My only piece of feedback for the cafe (and I'm putting this here because I didn't know how to bring it up otherwise) is that they might ask a preferred name for your food order vs. just taking it off your card.... My name was shouted through the whole cafe which was VERY problematic as its not the name I go by or identify with. In a lot of environments this would literally be a dangerous thing. Also, I'm sure there are a lot of other people in the world that don't even share the same experience that I do and feel uncomfortable with their birth names. IDK food for thought. I'm always happy to update my reviews for the better, and I feel such an update is warranted, based on my experience last night. I visited again for Food Truck Wed., this time to visit the Mac and Gold Truck (separate review for that forthcoming). As before, I was with CM, and we got beverages to go along with our food. Due to the pleasant spring weather, I was in the mood for something refreshing, so I ordered a strawberry French soda. This used to be one of my favorite coffee shop beverages to order when I lived in CA, due a friend's influence, but I hadn't had one in years. The older gentleman at Biddle's (the owner, I'm guessing) talked me into getting it with half and half, and I'm glad he did. The beverage was just what I remembered--not overly sweet, refreshing, and creamy at once. Mmm! Later, because we ended up hanging around longer than anticipated, I ordered a maple bacon latte, which was the drink I'd wanted to order on my first visit, but didn't see on the menu. This drink was very flavorful (there really was a hint of bacon flavor!) and well-balanced (not bitter, but not overly sweet), with a nice frothy texture. It even appeared that there was an attempt at a latte art heart, which CM claimed looked like a butt. ;-) CM ordered his standby, a cafe au lait. He said it was as good as it'd been last time, and he's told me that Biddle's makes his favorite version of the drink he's tried out of the many indie coffeeshops we've been to in PGH. To consume our beverages, we took advantage of the wonderful weather and sat on the front porch, which afforded some interesting people watching/listening. One of the more interesting sights we saw was a neighbor taking her pig (yeah, you read that right!) for a walk around the neighborhood. The porch, like the interior, is decorated with interesting and exotic decor, including some interesting face-like wood carvings and mini Buddha statues. While we were sitting outside, the owner opened the garage door fully, allowing the people seated inside to enjoy the weather as well. Overall, I was very impressed with Biddle's this visit, and can now confidently say that the drink I had last time was an off experience (don't order the malted latte!). As I mentioned in my last review, I definitely think that Biddle's is one of the businesses in the Regent Square area with the most character, and I now think it's one of the best indie coffeeshops in PGH. I love that they were able to turn my somewhat critical opinion around, based on the quality of the drinks I received this time, and the consistency of CM's drink. 4.5 stars. read more

The place is awesome! I came here on a rainy afternoon and sat beside the window door. It was great to sit there with the combination of warmth indoor and air from outside. The patio would be a great place for sunny days. The staff are very friendly. Though I have to say that I didn't enjoy my Spiced Vienna that much. The cappuccino I had was okay. Otherwise I would have given it five stars. It seems that there are a bunch of events going on there. It's probably a good idea to check their facebook webpage? I used to live three blocks away and Biddle's was my favorite spot to study and drink coffee. I love their selection of loose leaf tea and always buy my mother in law some when I'm passing through now. I was not expecting such a unique spot. I feel like coffee shops have to carve out an identity for themselves. Do we want to be hip (or hipster), cozy, modern etc. but this is a whole other level! The menu itself is expansive. Tons of really great choices for lattes (hello bacon maple), but the real treasure here is their massive tea list! And SO MANY black teas! Rejoice my friends for your tea haven is here! I LOVED my vanilla coconut tea. All loose leaf blends from a brand I've never heard of, plus they sell them too (have to investigate this more!). There's also a food menu, which just ups the ante more. Then you turn a corner from the bar area and there's a whole wall full of beads! So not only can you grab a tea, but you can make some jewelry too. Who woulda thought? So here's were I have to be a party pooper. This place is pretty awesome, but what's not awesome is the internet. These days wifi and coffee shops seem to go hand in hand. And while they have wifi, it's spotty. I kept getting kicked off. I asked one of the workers, who explained to me that since I had a Mac, "their internet sometimes doesn't work with them." Now, to be clear, I don't think she was lying, but I also feel that there has to be a problem with their internet. Cheap service, bad server... Not sure, but it doesn't cut it. I would have for sure come back to work there, but honestly because of the internet issue, I won't. Really a shame. Looking around, there was a good amount of people reading or writing, so maybe it's not the internet crowd. I would still be willing to grab another tasty drink and try some food though! read more

I had the chance to check out Biddle's Escape just three hours after they opened on their first opening day. We live in the neighborhood and have been eagerly awaiting the grand opening. The inside of this place is fantastic. It has a bold, bohemian feel. I was happy to see a lot of thought went into the patio seating area. There is a nice garden, with wood carvings and even a metal, dinosaur skeleton. I asked if it would be alright if I brought my dog next time, and was told they had already had dog visitors that day and it was no problem. I love places with outdoor seating for that very reason. For those of you who aren't familiar with the neighborhood, this new coffee shop is on a quiet street, with beautiful trees surrounding it. I think using "escape" in the title of this coffee shop was perfect. This place has a much more relaxing atmosphere then when you sit outside and sip your coffee in Squirrel Hill or directly on Braddock St. in Regent Square. The prices are great, and I am happy to support this new local business. We'll be returning here often. There is also beading section in this shop as well. One of my favorite coffeeshops in Pittsburgh! Situated in a very residential neighborhood in Point Breeze, this funky little coffeeshop has art bursting from its walls and patio and very good coffee! There are several large tables (one of which is made from a repurposed door!) and plenty small two-tops. When it's nice outside, you can sit outside on the patio and dogs are allowed - so bring those four-legged friends! If you don't have one - its a great place to dogwatch. Make sure to come with an appetite - they have excellent grilled cheese and soups! read more

Slightly off the beaten path in Regent Square, there's a new coffee shop, Biddle's Escape. Situated in a residential (and commercially zoned) stretch of the East End, this new coffee shop has a lot to offer. Biddle's Escape isn't a small space by any means. In addition to ample seating inside, there's a large patio with table and chairs- perfect for early morning meetings or casual meet-ups with friends and colleagues. The interior of Biddle's Escape is warm and inviting. As you walk in, you'll notice the smell of rich java being brewed. The walls are ornamented with local art, beads, and other artsy creations. The space itself is extremely clean and accessible. The back of the coffee shop is dedicated to all-things beads, and is managed by a young and skilled artist by the name of Jade. If you're the creative type, and like coming up with original wearable art, this is a great place to be. Joe Davis, owner, takes his coffee brewing seriously. "All of our beans are roasted at Commonplace Roasters; we have formulated an exclusive blend that is unique to this shop." Mr. Davis further explained that he plans on sourcing un-roasted green beans for his Biddle's Escape as well. My cup of coffee was rich and aromatic. As I sat and enjoyed my brew, I watched as other new customers placed their orders. The friendly and knowledgeable staff happily answered questions as they filled coffee cups. Biddle's Escape is welcoming space. In addition to serving excellent coffee (probably the best in the east end) it has a myriad of other offerings. I've been here maybe 6 or 7 times since they opened (I live nearby). I'm definitely going to be a frequent customer this summer. I really enjoy the shop. Great atmosphere, friendly service, great coffee, funky decor, awesome deck seating. It's a new shop, and they definitely have a few kinks that need ironed out. I've found coffee grounds at the bottom of my cup several times. The baristas need to prepare drinks with a bit more urgency. It's definitely a laid-back store, but if there are more than a couple people ahead of you it might take upwards of half an hour to get your drink. They also need to do something about their chai mix; I got an iced chai and their powdered chair mix does not dissolve well, which resulted in a chalky, chunky beverage. I'm sure those things will improve as they are open longer. But in all this is about 500 times better than Katerbean, our only other option for coffee in Regent Square. The quality of their coffee is excellent. read more

Let's think about this, it includes the street name and it talks about escaping which would make sense because once you are there...you forget about everything else...it. is. Fantastic. The place opens up in the summer to give you this rare combo of inside and outside all the while dodging the noise of cars zipping by every 2 seconds. It's peaceful and full of bones. Yeah I said bones...what a cool theme right!? There are board games to be played and plenty of seats to be sat in if that's what one would want. The drink options are plentiful and the service is swell. My only gripe is that I wish I lived on Biddle....bummer :( If you are in the area...definitely stop here. read more

I was all set and ready to love Biddle's Escape. They have a bead store in the back, sell books and crafts from local artists, and have an INSANE chalkboard menu-ed drink selection. I'm told they also have really great events (but they aren't on their website because they don't have a website...should have been my first clue). The drink and the service are some of the best. I've had friendlier baristas, but then again, I'm used to "my" coffee shop with my Cheers-like greeting when I walk in. Even still, she was patient while I perused the menu and had my Camp Fire S'more Hot Chocolate pulled together quickly. It was decadent and sweet and had a hint of marshmallow which perfectly complimented the delicious (real) whipped cream topped with graham cracker crumbs. Oh my, heaven in mug and perfect on a cold day. If that's where my experience ended, I would have given 4 or 5 stars. HOWEVER, I was stay to do work with a laptop. The wi-fi connection is horrible. It kept cutting out, and not just on my machine. The woman I was working with asked if their wi-fi occasionally times out and was told it was her laptop. Yes, her MacBook Pro (and mine for that matter, which works perfectly everywhere else) was the cause of the delay, not their internet service provider. So that kinda...wasn't cool. If you're coming here without a laptop, you'll do great. It's a great space to work unplugged or catch up with a good friend. read more

Regent square is so lucky to have acquired this hidden gem of a coffeeshop! This has quickly become my go-to spot to work anytime I'm nearby or passing through the neighborhood. It has all the important and desirable features for coffeeshop working: -- lots of seating and electrical outlets -- an extensive menu of coffee- and tea-based drinks and standard non-caffeinated beverages like juice and sparkling water -- there's something for everyone -- a great big self-serve water cooler (and roomy cups for them), a big plus for watermongers like myself! -- pleasant and unobtrusive music (usually classical) -- clean, well-kept bathrooms. The environment is very warm and cozy with a bohemian feel, the walls peppered with eclectic art pieces, masks, and rows and rows of BEADS! Yes, that's right, Biddle's is not just a coffeeshop but also a bead shop. The bead selection looks to be quite impressive, although I'm no expert. They also sell colorful handmade beaded earrings, most of which are in the $12-16 range. If you're here to hang out rather than to work, they have a nice collection of board games available. And, although I haven't been here in warm weather yet, there's an outdoor deck/patio space that would be amazing for hanging out and reading on in the spring and summer. I've tried their regular drip coffee, a cappuccino, and a cafe vienna (a latte with cinnamon and mocha powder added). I was not a fan of the cafe vienna, but I'm sure that I was just not used to the bitterness and texture of the added cinnamon and mocha. The coffee and espresso drinks here are not quite as good as what you'd get at coffeeshops like 21st Street, Espresso a Mano, and Voluto/Commonplace, but that's not the kind of place that Biddle's is trying to be. They are more of a cozy neighborhood cafe, and they accomplish that very well. And their coffee/espresso-based drinks are definitely way better than what you'd get at Starbucks or even Crazy Mocha. read more

I once gave this place 5 stars but things have changed significantly Staff and Drinks- The personable, knowledgeable and skilled Baristas they've had over the past year or so have mostly moved on and have generally been replaced by easily confused people who deliver espresso drinks with a flavor profile of rancid oil mixed with piss. The coffee is tolerable but there are plenty of establishments serving much better brews at equal expense. You'll get what you actually ordered at about 75% to 80% success rate. If you're planning on lunch the food selection is limited and expensive, though if you're a pretentious vegan you may find a few selections to your liking. Clientele- Also, good luck getting a table, as they are typically occupied by the same freeloaders using the space as their "office" for the day. Imagine dropping by for a hour at 10 am then seeing the same people with those same 7/8s empty cups at the same tables when you drop by for a to go drink 6 hours later. Of course, Biddle's business model is none of my concern. If you're into the kinds of people who use the word "I" once per 5 words spoken, or those who think microwaves "kill" food, or even those dreaming of a communistic worker's paradise you should hang out here. Remember, it'll only cost you one crappy drink per 6-8 hours and you might even get what you ordered. It's real shame this once wonderful place has gone so downhill. read more

I'm never in this area of town but felt compelled to grab coffee and chill for a bit before driving home to far North (Hills) last time I was in Regent Square. Biddle's Escape drew me in with the fun, funky colors and spacious patio. Really though that was about all I loved about it aside from the coffee. In short: Pros: Coffee was fantastic. I just got a cafe Americano and added a little half and half myself, so I probably just got the standard roast. Whatever it was, it was great. Quiet. Free Wi-Fi. Clean bathrooms. Cons: Hotter than a damn sauna. I bailed after not too long because I was developing some serious swamp crack, if you know what I mean... unacceptably hot. Service was the slowest I've ever gotten, and I was one of two people actively waiting for drinks. How can it take nearly 10 minutes to pour coffee into a cup??!? The barista was kinda nice but wouldn't last a morning rush at a Starbucks. If I'm in the area I MAY stop again, but overall I'd say my visit was lackluster. read more

The baristas are cool, and you can typically have a delightful conversation with one of the friendly people hanging around. I've been visiting Biddles for a little over a year now and can wholeheartedly recommend it for so many reasons: 1. The coffee is really good. 2. They have an enormous tea selection and you can buy loose leaf tea to take home and brew yourself. They will also combine and ice all teas (at least they have never said no when I ask for a combination like ginger+lemongrass+spearmint on ice.) 3. Their patio is HUGE and beautiful. They also allow dogs outside. 4. Lots of places to sit, both inside and outside. They also create an environment that is conducive for table sharing (check out the little table sign things near the register.) 5. The food and pastries are really good. They also have a brunch thing that is reasonably priced and usually really awesome. 6. The place is very clean. Including the bathrooms. 7. Staff are very nice and helpful. This isn't my favorite coffee shop in the U.S., but it's near the top of my list. Biddles and Cup Ka Joes in South Side are probably my favorite in Pittsburgh. read more

Biddle's deserves its reputation as a bit of a hidden gem, serving good coffee and offering a studying / meet-up friendly vibe as well as a neighborhood community hub. One wall is a windowed garage door bringing in lots of natural light (and which they sometimes open) looking out on to their comfortable dog-friendly patio. Funky decor, beads for sale along the back wall, decorative masks, pinball machines - there's plenty to comment on but it has a definite style. Some tables are made from up cycled front doors, others are two-tops that can be moved around to suit different size groups. Great(!) tea selection includes several flavors/styles of every type of tea on offer (four types of oolong, for example), very good coffee and some interesting and well-worth-sampling original drinks (try the Szegedi Kave.) Food and pastry selections are consistently good, emphasizing on delicious ingredients and their brunch is exceptional considering their extremely limited kitchen space - they bring out a portable prep table and cooktop and make each plate to order, so when they're slammed (which is often - brunch is delicious and word is out) you may have to wait, but in my experience it's pretty quick and worth the wait. Same with the rotating selection of food trucks hosted in front of Biddle's Escape every Wednesday night - well worth the wait. Wait, maybe it's sausage but it's definitely of the pork family. As I got in line with my 6 year old and 14 month old, I told them, "by golly they do have bacon and sausage here!" and the kids were all like "yayyyyyyy" but that was about the time I noticed the two police officers standing around holding coffee. I immediately knew that the coffees must have been espresso because it were black, I'm sure these coppers would've had that cup in handcuffs or would've shot it loads of times, just because. They would've said something like "oh, I thought it had a gun but it was only a heat protector thingy wrapped around its waist".....nonetheless, I had to inform the kids that the smell may have been the police officers and not the food. They had sad faces but as we reached our turn in line, the staff feller was so nice, it didn't matter if they had or hadn't the eating kind of bacon at all because we got grilled cheese, hot coca and a fucking latte holmes! All were satisfactory, I might add. The decor was intriguing and the kind of intriguing that I liked. The patio was spacious but Mother Nature peed all over it and everything was damp still. The people inside were pleasant and didn't seem to mind my 14 month old waddling around and staring at them for long periods of time, creating potential creepy prolonged eye contact but since she was so cute and little, it was seen as adorable instead of eerie. This is my family favorite place. Lovely staff, great coffee! Always something to view on the walls.
