Another great experience on our family quest to dine at international cuisine…read moreestablishments/festivals around Pittsburgh. This time: Cuban! We were warmly/cheerfully greeted by the couple who own Milanes, a bright in a somewhat blighted strip shopping center in McKees Rocks. The colors and decor in this small space transport you to Cuba. But it's clearly the menu that's the star. My hubs & I got there far too early, but happily, that enabled us to try what was one of our fave meal items: Guava BBQ chicken bites. It wasn't clear that these are deep-fried, and while I wouldn't normally order deep-fried stuff, this was a happy moment for us. These things are like crack! Cooked perfectly and slathered perfectly in the sweet/tart sauce. Oh! Yum! (The woman who clearly makes the desserts and also was running the register offered to just keep a check open for us when we were ready to order entrees. Helpful!). The sisters in law arrived, and it was time to order. You order your food at the counter before sitting down. Our choices: *A tip first -- the red beans are *killer* - smoky yumminess! Try to get these with your dish! We didn't know this till we tried one of our SIL's dishes. * Milanes Imperial rice bowl: tender, slow-braised chicken shredded over (a lot) of yellow rice & black beans. Queso & yummy garlic sauce were drizzled over the top. Perfectly cooked, scrumptious sweet plantains (another fave!) were served on the side. Overall, the dish was good and quite filling - but we wished there was more garlic sauce. The fish was a bit dry. * La Completa rice bowl: similar to above but with ground beef and homemade pico de gallo. Good dish. * Havana Street Beef rice bowl: Probably the standout fave. The succulent, slow-cooked beef with those smoky red beans - hard to beat! Dessert --- none for us, but one of the SILs snagged a flan. It was chilled & the carmelized top had hardened into a rock-hard caramel candy, but wowzer, the creamy/carmelly flavor of the custard. YUM! Only regret ---- one of us should've ordered their highly-recommended Cuban sandwich! Maybe to try for next time: The homemade guava pastelito. Woah, it looked good. It's tucked inside a clear plastic tower near the cash register. Next time! We'll definitely be back.

The bread had that perfect texture, and the sandwich brought back memories of some of the best Cuban sandwiches I've had -- honestly, it was right up there with El Segundo in Tampa! Really enjoyed the fries too I also grabbed a caramel flan to take home for dessert, and it was absolutely delicious -- creamy, rich, and the perfect sweet ending. Great Cuban food, generous flavors, and definitely a place I'd come back to. Highly recommend! Friendly service It's worth taking the drive over here from anywhere around Pittsburgh

Hard to believe we've been coming here since this place opened in 2003! Where did that time go?…read moreAnyway, we come here for special occasions like birthdays, and anniversaries annually. We've really never had a bad meal here. We've had a few meals that were better than others. Post Covid, the service has varied from visit to visit. They still have a nice little early happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM with drink specials and some appetizers in the bar. They do have nightly specials that they tend to post online midday. In the first I would say 15 years of coming, we used to get a free birthday dessert if you were, I think a member of their club or whatever, but I know there were other times that they used to ask if you were celebrating anything special when you were seated and for an anniversary, they would give us a free glass of champagne or dessert to share or something like that. I made a reservation for our anniversary online in advance , and I even mentioned in the comment box that we were celebrating our 33rd anniversary, but this time no mention of it from staff, so we didn't bother to mention it either. It was the Friday before Labor Day weekend and so they do tend to get busy by 5 o'clock, and the bar is typically full by 5 o'clock for happy hour. They only had two bartenders on, one of which was taking care of the tables so bar service was a little bit slow. It took us a little bit of time to pay before heading out to the hostess stand to get our table. Once we were seated at our table, it was close to 10 minutes before a young male server came by. I attribute this to back to school time when they've lost a lot of their employees and then of course being a Friday before a holiday weekend a lot of people bail out on work too. It is still our favorite restaurant in the area though so I'm keeping my five star rating. My husband had the chicken marsala which was delicious. I had a 6 ounce fillet with broccoli as my side. I had asked for medium rare and it was actually quite rare, I could've sent it back and had it cooked a little more, but I just ate it rare & it still tasted fine. We'll return in a few months for a birthday meal I'm sure. It's an old school classy vibe place, but still very casual. Varied menu & I like their steaks and I feel although steak is quite expensive right now that there's is actually more reasonably priced than some of the other local restaurants. I believe it was $38 for the 6 ounce fillet that came with one side. I recommend their lemon drop martini at happy hour.

Please see my attached photos for the dinner menu in May 2026. My husband and I have eaten two meals here. The service during our first visit was prompt, while the service during our second visit was a bit slower but always courteous. Here are my husband's and my ratings for our foods across both visits: Bread - 4.5 stars - This bread was free, and it came with olive oil. It was fresh and tasted good. Strawberry salad - 4.5 stars - The mixed greens, strawberries, pecans, and goat cheese were fresh and tasted very good. I liked that the right amount of vinaigrette dressing was added. Soup of the day - 4 stars - The soup was cream of mushroom. I received a large cup of it, and I liked it. Dynamite shrimp - 4.5 stars - My husband said that this appetizer was his favorite food here. A large number of fried shrimps were coated in a slightly spicy sauce. Tuna poke - 3.5 stars - The tuna, avocado, and mango tasted plain, so we added much salt. The wonton chips look slightly burned. Jumbo lump crab cake dinner - 4.5 stars - This entree contained one large crab cake that was very meaty and flavorful (5 stars). On the side was asparagus (4.5 stars) and rice (4 stars). Filet mignon - 4.5 stars - My husband ordered this filet mignon twice. The chef cooked the first steak as my husband had requested, but the second steak was slightly overcooked. Nonetheless, he enjoyed the flavors of the steak and the sides of garlic mashed potatoes and green beans with the right amount of butter and pepper. Chilean sea bass - 3.5 stars - The fish was tender and came with pineapple fried rice and Asian slaw. Other important information: The dress code appears to be smart-casual. My husband and I, as well as many other customers, wore jeans. The restaurant charges a convenience fee for using credit cards.
