Another great experience on our family quest to dine at international cuisine establishments/festivals around Pittsburgh. This time: Cuban! We were warmly/cheerfully greeted by the couple who own Milanes, a bright in a somewhat blighted strip shopping center in McKees Rocks. The colors and decor in this small space transport you to Cuba. But it's clearly the menu that's the star. My hubs & I got there far too early, but happily, that enabled us to try what was one of our fave meal items: Guava BBQ chicken bites. It wasn't clear that these are deep-fried, and while I wouldn't normally order deep-fried stuff, this was a happy moment for us. These things are like crack! Cooked perfectly and slathered perfectly in the sweet/tart sauce. Oh! Yum! (The woman who clearly makes the desserts and also was running the register offered to just keep a check open for us when we were ready to order entrees. Helpful!). The sisters in law arrived, and it was time to order. You order your food at the counter before sitting down. Our choices: *A tip first -- the red beans are *killer* - smoky yumminess! Try to get these with your dish! We didn't know this till we tried one of our SIL's dishes. * Milanes Imperial rice bowl: tender, slow-braised chicken shredded over (a lot) of yellow rice & black beans. Queso & yummy garlic sauce were drizzled over the top. Perfectly cooked, scrumptious sweet plantains (another fave!) were served on the side. Overall, the dish was good and quite filling - but we wished there was more garlic sauce. The fish was a bit dry. * La Completa rice bowl: similar to above but with ground beef and homemade pico de gallo. Good dish. * Havana Street Beef rice bowl: Probably the standout fave. The succulent, slow-cooked beef with those smoky red beans - hard to beat! Dessert --- none for us, but one of the SILs snagged a flan. It was chilled & the carmelized top had hardened into a rock-hard caramel candy, but wowzer, the creamy/carmelly flavor of the custard. YUM! Only regret ---- one of us should've ordered their highly-recommended Cuban sandwich! Maybe to try for next time: The homemade guava pastelito. Woah, it looked good. It's tucked inside a clear plastic tower near the cash register. Next time! We'll definitely be back. read more

What a delicious Cuban spot! I had the shredded chicken sandwich on real Cuban bread, and it was fantastic. The bread had that perfect texture, and the sandwich brought back memories of some of the best Cuban sandwiches I've had -- honestly, it was right up there with El Segundo in Tampa! Really enjoyed the fries too I also grabbed a caramel flan to take home for dessert, and it was absolutely delicious -- creamy, rich, and the perfect sweet ending. How did I not know there was a Cuban spot here??? Today, I happened to see an Instagram post from @latinaspgh about Latino-owned restaurants/coffee shops in the area. Milanes was the singular Cuban place on the list. I looked it up and from photos alone, I knew it was going to be good. And it was, and you should go. The place is adorable inside. And it's the kind of little family run restaurant that you just root for and want to support. There's plenty of seating to eat-in. Portions are huge, and our dinner, dessert, and drinks were truly fantastic. Owners and family were so nice. I had La completa (picadillo on yellow rice with garlic sauce and pico de gallo, with black beans, and maduros)--I couldn't eat more than half because I had committed before I walked in the place that dessert was happening. I saw the bakery case and doubled down on that without question. The thing is, I ate half my dinner and was still stuffed. My dinner was XXL and just perfect--flavorful and comforting. (Had dessert anyway. More on that in a sec.) Husband had the street beef sandwich on pressed Cuban bread made in house. It was delicious too and came with a big mess of fries. We also had perfectly crispy croquetas (for we are shameless), hot, smokey, and creamy inside. Everything we ordered we would order again, but honestly, I've got to get even deeper into this menu next time. Dessert: from the SIX different flavors of tres leches I had to choose from, I had plans to go traditional. But when it comes to dessert, I am easily influenced and I struck up a conversation with the dad of one of the owners. Next thing I know, I'm ordering key lime tres leches made in house by the owner, AND flan made by her mother in law (my recommender's wife). He did NOT steer me wrong and I did NOT take it to go. Instead, we ordered a cafe con leches and ate both desserts right there. I am seriously still so full. We finished two hours ago and I've already taken a walk. Totally worth it. Milanes Cuban Corner is a local, family-owned Cuban restaurant that opened months ago. It is located in a strip mall in McKees Rocks, but do not allow the location to deter you from visiting. My husband and I ate one lunch here. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I felt impressed by the interior design--vibrant colors, wall murals, and greenery. The two owners promptly greeted us. The menu listed shareables (e.g., ham croquetas and guava boneless wings), rice bowls (with beef, pork, chicken, or vegetables), sandwiches (e.g., Cuban), baked goods (e.g., tres leches and flan), and non-alcoholic beverages (e.g., Cuban coffee). We have never visited Cuba, but we have eaten authentic foods in many other Latin countries that have similar cuisine, and we felt happy with this restaurant. Here are my ratings for what we ordered: Beef empanadas - 4.5 stars - Two empanadas had a nicely crispy crust and were filled with seasoned ground beef that was not greasy. I liked the garlic sauce. Veggie Completa Rice Bowl - 4.5 stars - This vegetarian entree was flavorful and filling. It consisted of sweet plantains, yellow rice, black beans, pico de gallo, and garlic sauce. My husband loves rice and beans from Latin restaurants, and he said that this rice and beans was not the best ever but was tasty. Pan con Pollo Sandwich - 4.5 stars - This sandwich was a large size and contained juicy shredded chicken, mozzarella, cilantro, onion, and garlic sauce. The bread got slightly soggy, but we liked the flavor of the filling. Danish - 4.5 stars - This danish was a large size, tasted sweet, and had guava and cheese in the center. My husband ate all of it, so that is a compliment. Guava lemonade - 4.5 stars - This guava lemonade was house-made, and it tasted sweeter and less sour than typical lemonade. We did not receive a receipt, but I think that the price was $54 plus tax and tip, so it was not cheap but was worth it for the quality. read more

We are so lucky to have this awesome spot on our side of the city! We have been meaning to stop since they opened a couple months ago and are so happy that we finally did! The owners are super welcoming and were helpful in explaining the menu items, knowing it was our first time visiting! Everything from their in-house made breads and pastries to a variety of tres leche flavors and flan! The vibe totally reminds us of some of our favorite places in Miami! For our first visit we enjoyed the week's special, Kitchen Sink, as we wanted to try a bit of everything! It included rice, both pork and beef, 2 types of beans, queso, garlic sauce, pico, and the most wonderful plantains! The weight of the container felt like 10 pounds of food. We honestly should have weighed it. We also enjoyed the kiwi strawberry tres leches, and the most impressive, delightful, flakey, giant guava danish (that had cheese layered under the guava). In the short time we waited for our order to be prepared, we were already planning to return the next day! And that we did. The next day we returned for the Cuban w/ fries, a guava lemonade, flan, and another guava danish to enjoy the following morning because it was just that good! The Cuban was also massive, full of so much protein, and the bread insanely fresh. We for sure will return to probably enjoy every other menu item over time, because it all sounds so good. What a cool, vibrant, and charming restaurant! We tried the Cuban sandwich, potato balls, and empanadas--each one was absolutely delicious. And the cookies? Incredible. We haven't stopped talking about them! From the very first bite, all we could say was, "So fresh!" Everything tasted amazing, and you can really tell how much care goes into the food. Just found out that we actually have Cuban food in Pittsburgh and immediately had to try it. We were warmly greeted by the owners when we came in despite coming twenty minutes before closing. They were so nice and let us stay there to eat. We were going to take it home to eat it. They did a great job decorating the place. It looks so cute. The entire menu looked delicious. We wanted one of everything. They also make fresh baked goods which all looked amazing. My husband got the pork and absolutely loved it. I had the picadillo (ground beef) was amazing. We came back from FL a few weeks ago where we had Cuban food and I never thought I could have it in Pittsburgh. So happy we now have this option. We got beef empanadas and tres leches cake to go. Looking forward to trying those tomorrow. There's so much food that we have leftovers for tomorrow. If you like Latin food, you must run here and try it. We visited for the first time recently, and we were blown away. The Cuban sandwich was as good if not better than anything I've had in the Florida Keys or Tampa. And can we talk about the Cuban Coffee? The iced Cafe Con Leche is now at the top of my favorite coffee list in Pittsburgh. The owners were making all of the food themselves, and were so kind - they kept checking on us to see if we needed anything else. The place itself is decorated really nice, with a really wonderful and unique atmosphere. We can't wait to go back, multiple times. read more

Beautiful handmade pastries at the counter. Service was super friendly and welcoming. I felt like I was at the home of someone I've known for years. I ordered the Sunday dinner, which was pork, yellow rice, red beans, pico, and maduros. The garlic sauce and pick added so much flavor to everything! The pork was tender and juicy. The rice and beans also had a ton of flavor. I am obsessed with the maduros. Mojo pork sandwich was excellent...perfectly braised pork and bread super fresh. Pulled beef was super tender and rice had some character without being salty (raw onion added texture). Several friends suggested I try this restaurant. I am so glad I did. I am vegan and I wasn't sure what I could eat. The vegetarian bowl was super delicious. And the portions were enough to have seconds. The restaurant is very clean and the staff were helpful and very friendly which is more important to me than the food. I will definitely be going back and I suggest you also support this business especially since they are located in a much needed part of our community! read more

Milanes Cuban Corner is truly EXCELLENT and an exciting addition to this area! I went here for the first time a few days ago with my parents, who have become regulars. The folks who own this place are so kind, personable, and accommodating. They made a smaller portion of one of their dishes for my 8 year old daughter--who they recognized just from my parents' stories! Everything I tried was delicious. They are obviously making all of this food from scratch and not cutting corners. The guava lemonade is fantastic! I can't wait to return with my husband and sample more of the menu. read more

I have been trying to go here since it opened and finally made it today for lunch. It smelled so good inside! We were greeted by the owners Carlos and Collyn . Both were very nice and answered questions I had because I had never eaten Cuban food before. I ordered the Milanes Imperial and shared the nachos and loaded dip. Both were absolutely delicious! Love recognizing a well-run family owned business located in a strip mall. Not a large restaurant but enough room for several booths and some high top tables. Enthusiastic greeting as we entered and continued our entire visit. Salas-inspired music playing on the jukebox with warm Caribbean decor. Overpriced, bland, with a rude owner/manager and in a rundown shopping center. It's just a bad time. The food itself would be 'good' if it were about half the price. As is, it's not worth it. The interior of the restaurant is fine, if very 'strip mall'... which is what it is, of course. But as I said, it's down in the old Rocks shopping center. It's just a little sad. A true family establishment in the best possible sense. I had the shredded chicken with rice, red beans, and plaintains. All were phenomenal! My wife had some shredded beef dish that she said was great as well. Portions were huge so we had lunch the next day as a bonus. We had the empanadas as well. I consider myself a it of an empanada expert and these may be the best I've ever had. Manage your expectations though.
